Revisiting Residential Design Through Vertical Farming, Jetse Vollema

Architecture Theses

This thesis is an investigation of the question, as a city’s population continues to rise, how can residential design assist in meeting the increased demand for food, water, energy and shelter? The typologies for the investigation of this problem are a sustainable residential complex and urban agricultural facilities. The site for this investigation is Fargo, ND. The Unifying Idea is that by combining sustainable residential design and on site agricultural practices, residential design could increase the awareness within cities which are experiencing rapid population growth to the issue of successfully meeting the rise in energy and shelter demands. The Project …

The Effectiveness Of 9, 10 Anthraquinone As A Repellent To Protect Oilseed Sunflower From Blackbird Depredation, Megan Denise Niner

Biological Sciences

Across the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, blackbirds (Icteridae) cause millions of dollars in damage to sunflower crops annually, but effective methods to prevent or limit blackbird damage to sunflower crops are lacking. I tested two repellents (Avipel and AV2022, both with active ingredient 9, 10 anthraquinone) under application conditions that would be appropriate for large-scale, sunflower farming in two consecutive years. In 2012, I conducted daily avian point counts and weekly crop damage surveys to assess blackbird use of, and damage to, plots of sunflowers were sprayed with Avipel or left unsprayed (i.e., control). In 2013, I placed …

Diet And Effects Of Environmental Stressors On The Altricial Nestlings Of Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus), Jacob G. Randa

Biological Sciences

Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are a common species of altricial waterbird found across much of North America. As a piscivorous colonial waterbird, cormorants are often persecuted due to perceived impacts on fisheries. In this study I examined the diet of cormorant nestlings at five cormorant colonies in central North America to answer two questions: 1) Is nestling diet reflective of opportunistic feeding behavior, thus diminishing the likelihood of negative impacts to the fishery? and 2) How do diet and environmental stressors effect the development of cormorant nestlings? By analyzing the caloric content of nestling diet and quantifying environmental stressors such …

Development And Characterization Of Multifunctional Nanoparticles For Drug Delivery To Cancer Cells, Rahul Nahire Jan 2014

Development And Characterization Of Multifunctional Nanoparticles For Drug Delivery To Cancer Cells, Rahul Nahire

Pharmacy

Lipid and polymeric nanoparticles, although proven to be effective drug delivery systems compared to free drugs, have shown considerable limitations pertaining to their uptake and release at tumor sites. Spatial and temporal control over the delivery of anticancer drugs has always been challenge to drug delivery scientists. Here, we have developed and characterized multifunctional nanoparticles (liposomes and polymersomes) which are targeted specifically to cancer cells, and release their contents with tumor specific internal triggers. To enable these nanoparticles to be tracked in blood circulation, we have imparted them with echogenic characteristic. Echogenicity of nanoparticles is evaluated using ultrasound scattering and …

Applying Serf Analysis To Rank Procurement Strategies For A North Dakota Green Field Pea Processor, Bryant Sanderson

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

There are many crops grown in North Dakota, but only a few have a futures market for prices and are grown readily throughout the country. The specialty crops in North Dakota display many of the same characteristics such as a lack of a futures market, high standards for grain quality, and concentrated production areas. These characteristics create unique procurement risks for specialty crop processors. This project ranks procurement strategies for a green field pea processor located in North Dakota using stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF) analysis. Through SERF analysis, it was found that geographic diversification and forward …
