Influence Of Maternal Nutrient Intake On Placental Vascular Function In Pregnant Beef Cows, Arshi Reyaz
Influence Of Maternal Nutrient Intake On Placental Vascular Function In Pregnant Beef Cows, Arshi Reyaz
Animal Sciences
We hypothesized that global maternal nutrient restriction during early and mid-gestation followed by realimentation in pregnant beef cows would alter placental arterial vascular function. We tested changes in placental caruncular (CAR) and cotyledonary (COT) arterial sensitivity to bradykinin (BK), a potent vasodilator. Cows were randomly assigned to be nutrient restricted for 55 or 110 during early to mid pregnancy. On d 85, 140, and 254 cows were euthanized and CAR and COT arteries were isolated. Maternal nutrient restriction during early and mid-gestation allowed for placental compensation to overcome the loss of nutrients while realimentation returned placental arterial vosoactivity similar to …

Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken
Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken
Education
According to critical disability studies scholars, disablism may be the fundamental system of unearned advantaging and disadvantaging upon which all other notions of difference-as-deviance are constructed. If so, a deeply critical and intersectional investigation of enabled privilege/disablism prepares a grounding from which seeds of novel and effective approaches to social and educational justice may be cultivated. Whether or not disablism holds this pivotal position, the costs to us all in terms of personal, ethical, professional, and financial losses are too steep, have always been too steep. In this disquisition I begin by arguing for the prioritizing and centering of a …
Exploration Of Laboratory Techniques Relating To Cryptosporidium Parvum Propagation, Life Cycle Observation, And Host Immune Responses To Infection, Cheryl Brown

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate two management decisions made by beef cattle producers and their impacts on reproduction. In experiment 1, growth, attainment of puberty, and pregnancy rates were evaluated in crossbred heifers originating from two different breeding systems: 1) cows only exposed to natural service herd bulls (NS), or 2) cows exposed to ovulation synchronization and fixed-time AI followed by natural-service bulls (TAI, fixed-time artificial insemination). Artificial insemination did not influence growth rate during the development phase, attainment of puberty, or pregnancy rates in heifer progeny. In experiment 2, pregnancy attainment and calving distribution of beef females administered …
Effects Of Dietary Supplementation Of Flaxseed And Metabolizable Protein On Reproduction In Mares And Ewes, Tara Swanson
Effects Of Dietary Supplementation Of Flaxseed And Metabolizable Protein On Reproduction In Mares And Ewes, Tara Swanson
Animal Sciences
Two experiments evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation on maternal reproductive parameters. In Experiment 1, 16 mares were assigned to dietary treatments: control, flaxseed, or linseed meal for 16 wk. Blood samples were analyzed for progesterone (P4), serum chemistry panel values, and fatty acids. Flaxseed supplementation increased (P < 0.01) alphalinolenic acid concentration, but treatment had no other effects. In Experiment 2, 45 multiparous ewes were allotted to dietary levels of metabolizable protein (MP): 60% (MP60), 80% (MP80), or 100% (MP100) from d 100 to d 130 of gestation. At d 130 ewes were slaughtered and tissues harvested. There was a day x fetal number interaction for P4, estradiol 17β, and thyroxine (T4) along with a treatment x fetal number interaction for T4. There was a day effect for cortisol and triiodothryonine. Results indicate dietary supplementation alters maternal parameters including hormones and fatty acids.

Growth hormone (GH) regulates several physiologic processes in vertebrates, including the promotion of growth, an anabolic process, and mobilization of stored lipid, a catabolic process. Here, we used rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as a model to examine the nutritional programming required for the disparate metabolic actions of GH, specifically lipolysis. Juvenile trout were exposed to fed and fasting regimens in vivo and subsequent hormone treatment in vitro. We used real-time quantitative-PCR to measure levels of mRNA expression of Hormone-sensitive lipase 1 (HSL1) and HSL2 in liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. We used Western blotting to investigate the signaling pathways affected …
Quality And Estimated Glycemic Index Of Bread Fortified With Soy Protein Isolate, Natsuki Fujiwara
Quality And Estimated Glycemic Index Of Bread Fortified With Soy Protein Isolate, Natsuki Fujiwara
Cereal Science
More than 25 and 79 million individuals in the U.S. have diabetes and pre-diabetes, respectively. Many individuals are required to monitor blood glucose levels. Glycemic index (GI), a measurement of how a food affects the blood glucose level, is a method for selecting foods by diabetic populations. The effect of soy protein isolate (SPI) on the glycemic response of bread was determined, including the quality characteristics of bread made with various SPI percentages. Lower loaf volumes, firmer texture and open grain structure were observed in breads as the level of SPI increased. Estimated GI (eGI) significantly decreased (p<0.05) with increased SPI levels and also a significant correlation (p<0.05) was found between these indices and SPI concentrations. This indicates that fortification of SPI in the bread can reduce eGI and possibly provide a health benefit to the diabetic population. This experiment provided useful insights into SPI effect on eGI and bread quality characteristics.

Radiation Hybrid Mapping Of Barley Chromosome 3h, Mona Mazaheri
Radiation Hybrid Mapping Of Barley Chromosome 3h, Mona Mazaheri
Plant Sciences
Assembly of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genome requires high resolution maps for aligning contig-based physical maps along chromosomes. Genetic maps lack accurate information on the physical position of almost half of the barley genome located in recombination-poor regions. Radiation hybrid (RH) mapping is an alternative approach, which is based on radiation-induced chromosomal deletions. In this study, an RH population for barley chromosome 3H was developed. Genotyping 373 3H-RH lines with 113 markers resulted in an RH map with an average resolution of 2.22 Kb. Compared to an analogous genetic map, the 3H-RH map resolution was 9.53-X higher, reaching to …

Marker Assisted Selection Increases The Efficiency Of Breeding For Potato Virus Y Resistance In Potato, Whitney Ann Harchenko
Plant Sciences
Potato Virus Y (PVY) is an important virus of potato due to the non-persistent mode of transmission by aphids causing yield losses. Genetic resistance is the recommended control since insecticides cannot adequately control the spread of PVY by aphids. The gene Ryadg from S. tuberosum ssp. andigena provides resistance to all strains of PVY. This gene has genetically been mapped to chromosome XI, and linked polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based DNA markers have been identified. This study identified PVY resistant progeny by the use of the molecular sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker RYSC3. The RYSC3 marker allowed a simple and …

Architecture And The Body: Integrating Fitness In The Modern Urban Center, Calvin Morey
Architecture Theses
History reveals the human body in a way that differs greatly from today’s understanding. Through the artefacts of ancient architectural constructs, art, and literature we can see that the body was once articulated as an integral part to the world as a body of perception. It was and still is the case that through our bodies we are able to sensually touch and translate the world into thought, imagination and dreams. Our environments and their ability to shape our movements through them have an immense impact on how we come in contact with one another, perceive ourselves, and engage our …
