Attracting A New Generation Of Participants To The Elderly Nutrition Program, Christa Ann Stangl
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
The purpose of this study was to explore the types of services, programs, and activities needed and/or desired by older adults. The secondary purpose of this study is to explore what prompts and/or influences older adults, to participate in programs related to their health and wellbeing. This study is needed, because the population of older adults has increased, due to the baby boomer generation. Even though there is a large population increase there is a decrease in the use of senior centers. The study used qualitative methods by the means of eight focus group locations in the state of North …
Examination Of The Period Of Preparation For Breeding In Male And Female Songbirds, Katie Beth Needham
Examination Of The Period Of Preparation For Breeding In Male And Female Songbirds, Katie Beth Needham
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
In virtually all species, reproduction must be precisely timed to coordinate breeding and rearing of offspring with favorable conditions. It is imperative for individuals to time the highest energetic cost to themselves or highest needs by offspring with greatest food availability in either abundance or nutrient make-up. To accomplish this, individuals must integrate signals conveying both internal and external status and accordingly alter the activity of the reproductive axis. To date most efforts to identify variation in control mechanisms for reproduction in seasonally breeding animals have focused on the brain as the initiator for reproduction. However, recent studies have re-directed …
Breaking The Mold: Exploring The Recreation Of Fitness Design In A Natural Setting, Dylan Sullivan
Breaking The Mold: Exploring The Recreation Of Fitness Design In A Natural Setting, Dylan Sullivan
Architecture Theses
Since the beginning of time, mankind has maintained a profound connection with their physical fitness and the World around them. However, modern day practices are distrupting these formerly innate behaviors. The lethargic lifestyles of the 21st century are a direct reflection of the obsession over constant commodity and innovation. Perhaps it is time to address this issue, with the health and wellness of the planet and its inhabitants depending upon it. The purpose of this project is to design a public fitness center because, as people age, they are getting less: physical activity, social interaction and exposure to the exterior …

Yield Efficiency Using A Stochastic Frontier Approach For Corn, Soybeans, And Hard Red Spring Wheat In North Dakota, Bayarbat Badarch
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Agriculture is a keystone for the North Dakota economy. The research focused on three selected crops’ yield: corn, soybeans and HRS wheat. The research provides a direct and indirect cumulative elasticity measure for North Dakota for each of the three crops’ yields using stochastic yield frontier models. In addition, the research provides the technical efficiency frontiers for nine different regions in North Dakota as well as across the 22 years (1994 to 2015). The results revealed that each of the three crops’ yields have a stronger relationship with weather variables than input cost and quantity variables. The mean level of …
Minimum Cost Beef Backgrounding Ration Utilizing Alternative Feedstuffs And Stochastic Prices, Levi Helmuth
Minimum Cost Beef Backgrounding Ration Utilizing Alternative Feedstuffs And Stochastic Prices, Levi Helmuth
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Cattle producers on the Northern Great Plains have many feedstuffs available. Feedstuffs comprise a large portion of direct costs producers face, and to be profit maximizing producers they look to minimize this cost. This is often done through linear programming utilizing average prices. However, price data for alternative feedstuffs can be scarce, and both conventional and alternative feedstuff prices can be volatile. This thesis seeks to identify a least cost ration that captures the volatility of feedstuff prices.

China’S Urban Household Food Consumption, Nutrition And Health, Yan Wang
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
The effect of family structure on household nutrition intake and the effect of wine, beer, and spirits consumption on household nutrition and health are examined. To evaluate nutrition intake, an Eating Healthy Index (EHI) is developed following the Compilation of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines, published by the Chinese Nutrition Society, and the Healthy Eating Index-2010 components and standards for scoring from USDA. Using previously collected household survey data from 11 cities in China, an EHI is developed and calculated for each family to assess their nutrition intake. The score is calculated such that it increases if consumption is in a range …
Biological Evaluation Of The Associations Between Animal Size, Feeding Behavior, Blood Metabolites And Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Ananda Barbara Portela Fontoura
Biological Evaluation Of The Associations Between Animal Size, Feeding Behavior, Blood Metabolites And Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Ananda Barbara Portela Fontoura
Animal Sciences
The biological variation in feed efficiency is regulated by multiple physiological mechanisms relevant to energy use in livestock species. The current study examined the associations between body composition, feeding behavior, linear body measurements and plasma metabolites with different measures of feed efficiency in growing heifers, finishing steers and mature pregnant cows. Our findings indicate that inclusion of body size measurements in prediction models of gain and intake improved the models’ accuracy and might account important differences related to eating capacity. Among the traits evaluated, feeding behavior possessed stronger associations with efficiency measures and displayed differences between efficient and inefficient animals. …

The Effects Of Herbivory And Vegetation Competition On Seedling Survival And Growth In The Middle Sheyenne River Watershed, North Dakota, Sarah Braaten Johnston
Range Science
There is a concern about the lack of regeneration of riparian hardwood forest communities in the Middle Sheyenne River Watershed of northeastern North Dakota. Natural resource managers and landowners are unsure if herbivory by ungulates or other factors are responsible for a lack of tree seedling regeneration and survival. We focused our research on the role of ungulates and competitive vegetation in seedling survival and growth in demonstration tree planting sites. Landowners utilized exclosures from ungulate browsing and/or grazing, and different forms of vegetation control. The riparian study showed the combination of deer with cattle significantly affected survival of seedlings …
An Exploration Of The Effects Of Cattle Grazing, Prairie Dog Activity, And Ecological Site On Plant Community Composition And Western Wheatgrass Vegetative Reproduction In Northern Mixed Grass Prairie, Aaron Lee Field
Range Science
Modern range scientists and managers are tasked with feeding more people than ever before while maintaining or improving the ecological function of over half of the world’s land surface. Often, these tasks are in conflict. This disparity is evident in the relationship between rangeland livestock producers and black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludoviciana). Prairie dogs are considered a keystone species and an ecosystem engineer, but they also reduce available forage for livestock. In this disquisition we investigated the dynamic relationship between prairie dog activities and cattle grazing in respect to their combined and separate influences on plant community composition and western …

Recalibration Of Soil Potassium Test For Corn In North Dakota, John Steven Breker
Recalibration Of Soil Potassium Test For Corn In North Dakota, John Steven Breker
Soil Science
Corn (Zea mays L.) production has greatly increased in North Dakota since the 1990s; yet, potassium (K) fertilizer recommendations for corn in North Dakota still date from the late 1970s and early 1980s when corn grain yields were comparatively lower and native soil K fertility was sufficient for most crop K requirements. To update K fertilizer recommendations for modern corn production and lower soil K levels, corn grain yield response to K fertilization, various soil K testing methods, and seasonal soil K variation were investigated in a two-year (2015 and 2016) study. The standard soil K testing method of NH4OAC …
