Evaluation Of Alternative Methods For Leafy Spurge Control In The Northern Great Plains, Tracy Lynn Ellig Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Alternative Methods For Leafy Spurge Control In The Northern Great Plains, Tracy Lynn Ellig

Range Science

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a costly noxious weed to manage in the Northern Great Plains; it invades rangelands and displaces native and desirable vegetation. Our first objective was to test the recommended full rate and half rate of selected herbicides applied in September following a spring burn on a leafy spurge invaded plant community. Our second objective was to determine if raffinate (desugared beet molasses) applied to leafy spurge invaded rangeland would attract cattle to consume leafy spurge. The aminocyclopyrachlor with chlorosulfuron treatment had the best leafy spurge control at the full rate, with stem density reductions of …

Impacts Of Prescribed Fire And Grazing On Northern Great Plains Rangelands, Haley Mae Ann Johnson Jan 2018

Impacts Of Prescribed Fire And Grazing On Northern Great Plains Rangelands, Haley Mae Ann Johnson

Range Science

Prescribed burning was utilized as a management tool on grasslands of the Northern Great Plains. We analyzed the use of fire to manipulate encroaching and unpalatable western snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis), to promote browsing and improve nutritive quality. Fire was successful at altering the nutrient quality of western snowberry and selectivity of grazing livestock from plant specific to patch specific. Additionally, we evaluated the difference between burn season and frequency on plant community dynamics of an ungrazed tallgrass prairie invaded by Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis). Fire promoted native forb and grass species, stressing that native species are well adapted to the …

An Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopic Investigation Of Molecular Interactions At Hydroxyapatite-Collagen Interfaces In Healthy And Diseased (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) Human Bone And Biomineralized Tissue-Engineered Bone, Scott Andrew Payne

Materials and Nanotechnology

At its primary level (nm scale) bone is a nanocomposite consisting of a mineral (hydroxyapatite) phase which gives bone its strength and an organic (type I collagen) phase giving bone its fracture toughness. Hydroxyapatite, (HAP) Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Bone tissue has a complex hierarchical structure spanning multiple length scales (cm to nm). Characterization of mineral composition in biomineralized tissues such as bone at their primary level, is very challenging and requires instrumentation with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combines high spatial resolution with visual correlation of diffraction and elemental-composition data. Electron …

Evaluating Mechanisms Of Metastasis Of Prostate Cancer To Bone Using 3d Bone-Mimetic Tissue Engineered Scaffolds, Md Shahjahan Molla

Materials and Nanotechnology

The complex nature of cancer metastasis necessitates the development of a cancer model based on specific metastatic stages. In this dissertation, we report a polymer-nanoclay based in vitro tumor model which recapitulates early stage of prostate cancer skeletal metastasis. A unique cell culture system termed as ‘sequential culture’ has been applied to create a bone-mimetic niche for colonization of prostate cancer cells. Sequentially cultured MDA PCa 2b cells with MSCs formed self-organized multicellular tumoroids with distinct tight cellular junctions and hypoxic core regions. Further, the sequentially cultured PC-3 cell formed multicellular tumoroid like clusters. We performed immunocytochemical confocal microscopy, qRT-PCR, …

An Investigation Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Career Firefighters, Allison Michelle Barry Jan 2018

An Investigation Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Career Firefighters, Allison Michelle Barry

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Firefighters are responsible for protecting citizens as well as the infrastructure of cities across the United States. In order to safely protect and perform on-duty tasks, firefighters must be capable of performing physiologically demanding skills. Emerging evidence has led to heightened concern for firefighters’ increased obesity levels and decreased physical activity (PA). Formal exercise and PA research specific to firefighters is lacking. More specifically, there is a lack of literature using accelerometers to objectively measure PA. There is more evidence, however, to demonstrate firefighters have a high prevalence of obesity surpassing the general population. Not only are firefighters overweight and …

Architectural Mood And Mental Space: A Cathartic Journey Off The North Shore Of Lake Superior, Ty Englund Jan 2018

Architectural Mood And Mental Space: A Cathartic Journey Off The North Shore Of Lake Superior, Ty Englund

Architecture Theses

Most people think of architecture as a profession that is concerned with aesthetic beauty—designs that please the observer through visual perception of the harmony, symmetry, and good proportions crafted by the designer. But, architecture is more than just aesthetics. Well-designed buildings need to respond to the functional needs of the occupants, and ensure structural soundness for safety reasons. However, I believe Architecture is even more than that. True architecture can create feelings and emotions from within, and cause the users to self reflect on their own lives. Furthermore, I suggest that we, as architects, can provide a healing environment for …

The Effects Of Injectable Trace Mineral Supplements In Donor Cows At The Initiation Of A Superovulation Protocol On Embryo Outcomes And Pregnancy Rates In Recipient Females, Felipe Silva Jan 2018

The Effects Of Injectable Trace Mineral Supplements In Donor Cows At The Initiation Of A Superovulation Protocol On Embryo Outcomes And Pregnancy Rates In Recipient Females, Felipe Silva

Animal Sciences

Concentrations of trace minerals within the body are known to impact reproductive processes. Thus, the current study analyzed the effects of using an injectable trace mineral supplement containing selenium, zinc, copper, and manganese during a superovulation protocol on embryo outcomes in donor beef cows and further effects on pregnancy rate in recipient females. We hypothesized that an injectable trace mineral (TM) supplement provided to cows fed to meet known nutrient requirements would increase TM status and influence superovulation, embryo characteristics, and enhance pregnancy rates. Our findings indicate that the injectable TM increased concentration of Se within the liver. However, superovulatory …

Novel Ecosystem Management: Evidence For Alternative Strategies In The Northern Great Plains, Megan Jane Dornbusch Jan 2018

Novel Ecosystem Management: Evidence For Alternative Strategies In The Northern Great Plains, Megan Jane Dornbusch

Range Science

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis, hereafter bluegrass) invasion in the northern Great Plains is reducing biodiversity and altering ecosystem properties. We cannot remove bluegrass from this system due to the extent of its invasion, so managers must control bluegrass invasion locally. However, effective management of bluegrass-invaded systems is unclear as they are novel ecosystems with no historic reference to guide current practices. First, we compared the influence of traditional and alternative grazing management strategies on invaded plant communities. Second, we quantified bluegrass fuel bed characteristics to inform prescribed fire management. Our findings indicate that alternative grazing management may be necessary to …

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

The effect of cocktail or “pre-workout” supplements containing L-arginine nitrate and caffeine are equivocal with anaerobic performance. The purpose of this study was to compare anaerobic performance and blood flow of pre-workout supplement containing L-arginine-nitrate and caffeine-to-caffeine and placebo. In a randomized, double-blind study, 12 resistance-trained males (caffeine users) completed three trials. Biodex concentric-concentric elbow-flexion and extension (5-sets, 10-repetitions). Ultrasound measured brachial blood flow (M-Vel, V- r2 and V-C). Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference in total dynamic work PRE-PLA (P<0.0001) and CAF-to-PLA (P<0.0001) but not PRE-to-CAF (P=0.9581). Furthermore, a significant difference V- r2 PRE-to-CAF (P=0.0391) and PLA-to-CAF (P=0.0070) and M-Vel PRE-to-CAF (P=0.0281). Conclusion, PRE did not differ CAF in strength measures other than a difference in M-Vel. PRE compared to PLA were not statically different in blood flow. The study illustrated no improvement beyond individual ingredient. This research may be useful for future cocktail supplement and Nitric Oxide research.

The Effect Of Vitamin A Restriction On Marbling And Adipogenic Gene Expression In Commercial Angus And Simmental Steers, Evan Elliot Knutson Jan 2017

The Effect Of Vitamin A Restriction On Marbling And Adipogenic Gene Expression In Commercial Angus And Simmental Steers, Evan Elliot Knutson

Animal Sciences

Vitamin A (Vit-A) restriction has been shown to increase marbling in cattle. Our hypothesis for this study was that a low Vit-A diet would increase marbling and improve meat quality characteristics while having no effect on production characteristics of Angus cross and Simmental steers. We also hypothesize that expression of proadipogenic factors such as PPARγ, C/EBPα, and FABP4 will be upregulated, and anti-adipogenic factors such as PREF-1 down regulated in cattle with high marbling scores. Treatments consisted of an unsupplemented VA basal diet and a VA supplemented diet at 2200IU/kg DM, arranged in a 2x2-treatment arrangement with breed. There was …

Winter Feeding Strategies: Implications Of Corn Supplementation On Gestating Beef Cows, Amelia R. Tanner Jan 2017

Winter Feeding Strategies: Implications Of Corn Supplementation On Gestating Beef Cows, Amelia R. Tanner

Animal Sciences

Overwintered, gestating beef cows fed low-quality forage are at risk of nutrient restriction which can lead to compromised growth and poor carcass quality in their offspring. In many species, poor maternal nutrition also results in reduced uteroplacental hemodynamics and fetal growth. To better understand how different nutritional paradigms influence the beef cow, our lab has examined the impacts of nutrient restriction and diet composition on uterine hemodynamics. Previous research suggests that dietary intake or protein supplementation alone does not increase uterine blood flow. The current study examined the effects of dietary starch supplementation and our findings indicate that increasing starch …
