Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey Jan 2022

Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey

Nursing

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental illness that impacts 12.5% of all postpartum women. In women with low-income, the prevalence increases to 25% and 40-60% of low-income, adolescent mothers report depressive symptoms. Postpartum depression also presents a significant early risk to healthy child development and the bond between mother and child. Symptoms of PPD can present as soon as 2 weeks postpartum and as late as 3 years postpartum. Unfortunately, once delivered, women are typically not assessed by a medical provider until 6 weeks postpartum. Therefore, targeting additional opportunities for PPD education in low-income women may play a role …

Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger Jan 2021

Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Aging results in structural changes that inhibit functional balance with daily activities. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of neuromuscular activation of the upper leg to balance and fall risk in the adult population. Eighteen males (32.44yrs ± 14.06) and 32 females (41.88yrs ± 18.07) completed strength and balance assessments with surface electromyography. Results indicated a significant age effect on the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance score (p = 0.019), and a significant gender effect on knee flexion torque (p < 0.001) and knee extension torque (p < 0.001). Linear regression determined a significant association between reduced muscle coactivation, gender, and age to predict Fall Risk Sway Velocity Index scores (p = 0.010, R2 = .218). Middle-aged adults had worse balance scores, and females demonstrated weaker muscular strength; reduced neuromuscular coactivation, age, and gender predicted 21.8% of the variability in Fall Risk scores.

Genetic Predictions Using Subjective Methods Of Beef Cattle Temperament Evaluation, Genetic Association Between Beef Cattle Temperament And Production Traits, And Influence Of Sire And Dam Temperament On Calf Performance, Elfren Celestino

Animal Sciences

Beef cattle temperament is not only important to handler safety and animal welfare but also found to be related to productivity and thereby, considered an economically important trait. Constraints to improve cattle temperament are due to the inherent complexity of this trait and difficulty in measurement. Our findings suggest that traditional subjective methods (DS; docility score and TS; temperament score) of beef cattle temperament evaluation has less effect in genetic merit predictions (heritability estimates and estimated breeding value ranking) provided that evaluator is included in the model. Our novel movement-based objective method (four-platform standing scale, FPSS) using standard deviation of …

Potential For Phenotypic Plasticity In The Hyperosmotic Stress Response Of Diverse E. Coli, Madelyn Ashley Schwartz Jan 2021

Potential For Phenotypic Plasticity In The Hyperosmotic Stress Response Of Diverse E. Coli, Madelyn Ashley Schwartz

Microbiological Sciences

Escherichia coli inhabits multiple environments that contain varying physical stresses which emphasize the importance of adaptation. The large pangenome of E. coli can account for some strain-to-strain variances in phenotype, but phenotypic plasticity may be another key factor. The key behind phenotypic plasticity may be transcriptional regulators such as the sigma factor RpoS. The extent of phenotypic plasticity and possible mechanisms in stress conditions has not been heavily studied in bacteria. We looked at the presence of plasticity in the growth rate of E. coli under a hyperosmotic condition. RNAseq was used to explore the connection between RpoS and phenotypic …

Marijuana Legalization Effect On Opioid Abuse: A Synthetic Control Approach, Elisha Kwaku Denkyirah

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The opioid epidemic constitutes one of the worst drug crises in the history of U.S. State-level policies, in general, have done little to prevent prescription opioid abuse. A noteworthy exception to other clinical efforts to curb opioid abuse is marijuana. Despite preliminary evidence, many states are hesitant to introduce legislation to expand access to medicinal marijuana or liberalize laws on the recreational use of marijuana, fearing additional research is needed. Utilizing a synthetic control method and annual state-level data from 2006 to 2018, this study examines the effect of recreational marijuana legalization on opioid abuse. The findings strongly indicate marijuana …

Rice Variety Choice And Subsidy Effects On Market Share, Jeremy Zwinger Jan 2021

Rice Variety Choice And Subsidy Effects On Market Share, Jeremy Zwinger

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The United States has been losing market share because the unintended consequences of policy decisions have influenced what rice to grow, rather than taking the signal directly from buyers. U.S. share of Mexican rice imports has fallen from 100% in 2002 to 67% in 2021 as better perceived-quality product is purchased from other international origins. During this same time, hybrid rice acres have gone from 0% to over 70%. This research develops a theoretical model to evaluate subsidy effects on market-share performance when support for quality rice improvements is considered. Empirical analysis using Granger Causality suggests that planting hybrid rice …

The Influence Of Beef Carcass Weight On Troponin-T Degradation And Heat Shock Protein 70 In Two Different Muscles, Supriya Deb Nath

Animal Sciences

This study was aimed to assess how carcass size affects protein degradation in postmortem muscle and subsequent impacts on meat quality. Beef carcasses were randomly selected at slaughter and classified as heavy (> 430.9 kg; n = 22), average (351.5 to 385.6 kg; n = 23), or light (< 317.5 kg; n = 20). Troponin-T (TnT) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) were analyzed for protein abundance on 3-day aged longissimus (LD) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles and 14-day aged LD muscle. TnT degradation in heavy carcasses was greater in the d-3 SM muscle and less in the d-14 LD muscle. Carcass size was positively correlated with the 30 kDa TnT band in d-3 SM. Therefore, carcass size influenced the TnT degradation but had no influence on HSP70 protein activity in either LD or SM.

Impacts Of Added Roughage On Feedlot Performance, Digestibility, Ruminal Fermentation, And Ruminal Ph Of Steers Fed Wheat-Based Feedlot Diets, Wayde Janelle Pickinpaugh Jan 2021

Impacts Of Added Roughage On Feedlot Performance, Digestibility, Ruminal Fermentation, And Ruminal Ph Of Steers Fed Wheat-Based Feedlot Diets, Wayde Janelle Pickinpaugh

Animal Sciences

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the inclusion of additional roughage in wheat-based diets containing modified distillers’ grains with solubles on feedlot performance (Study 1) and digestibility, ruminal pH, and ruminal fermentation characteristics (Study 2). Study 1 used 72 steers (391.6 ± 46.3 kg) and study 2 used 4 ruminally and duodenally cannulated steers (393.4 ± 33.0 kg). Feedlot performance and carcass characteristics, excluding marbling, were not affected by increasing roughage (P ≥ 0.20). Ruminal pH increased linearly (P < 0.01) as rate of roughage inclusion increased. Concentrations of acetate and butyrate increased, and propionate decreased in a linear fashion (P < 0.01), increasing acetate and butyrate to propionate ratio (P < 0.01) with increasing dietary roughage. Our data indicate that increasing roughage inclusion in wheat-based diets including modified distillers’ grains with solubles increased ruminal pH and shifted ruminal fermentation patterns without affecting feedlot performance.

Biochemical And Cellular Characterization Of Replication Factor A (Rfa) During Meiosis And The Dna Damage Response In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angela Marie Adsero Jan 2021

Biochemical And Cellular Characterization Of Replication Factor A (Rfa) During Meiosis And The Dna Damage Response In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angela Marie Adsero

Cellular and Molecular Biology

Replication Factor A (RFA) is an essential heterotrimeric single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) binding complex, comprised of Rfa1, Rfa2, and Rfa3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. RFA is required for DNA replication, repair, recombination, and cell cycle regulation. RFA acts as a sensor of ssDNA, a common intermediate of these processes, and coordinates these processes through recruitment of proteins. For example, during the DNA damage response (DDR), RFA-coated ssDNA is necessary for the recruitment and activation of the sensor kinase Mec1. Additional checkpoint proteins, also recruited by RFA, are necessary for the downstream recruitment and activation of the effector kinase Rad53 that ultimately leads …
