Automated Eeg Analysis And Spike Detection, Walter Vanderschraaf Dec 1991

Automated Eeg Analysis And Spike Detection, Walter Vanderschraaf

Theses

EEG analysis of epileptic patients is extremely time consuming. Patients are monitored up to 36 hours at a time. The neurologist must visually review stacks of EEG records to determine whether they contain epileptic or artifactual activity. This process is very subjective and can vary from one neurologist to another based on his or her training and experience. The neurologist is only human and may tire or lose his or her concentration. Automated EEG analysis can efficiently reduce the amount of data and time involved in analysis. It is also more consistent and objective than human analysis.

The main objective …

Representation Of Graphical Deep Knowledge In An Object-Oriented Database System, Prasanna S. Venkatesh Dec 1991

Representation Of Graphical Deep Knowledge In An Object-Oriented Database System, Prasanna S. Venkatesh

Theses

Object-oriented approaches to the design of complex graphical interfaces have received an enormous impetus in the database and knowledge representation disciplines. As traditional CAD systems store information about all the objects for display purposes but do not store any knowledge for reasoning purposes, they are considered as "knowledge poor" and they cannot support efficient environments for design. In Artificial Intelligence the notion of "Graphical Deep Knowledge" has been proved successful to represent knowledge about objects for display purposes as well as reasoning purposes. To design "knowledge rich" systems which can support better graphical interfaces, the theory of "Graphical Deep Knowledge" …

Position Recovery And Motion Analysis From Stereo Image Sequences, Yuxin Xie Dec 1991

Position Recovery And Motion Analysis From Stereo Image Sequences, Yuxin Xie

Theses

Based on four stereo images, a new concept of unified optical flow field has been developed recently [3]. It is a generalization of the optical flow in stereo imagery. A set of fundamental equations is established to characterize the unified optical flow field. Another set of equations is then derived from which 3-D structure can be reconstructed and its motion can be analyzed by the use of the unified optical flow field quantities. In this thesis, we use some synthetic images of a rotated conical structure to study and test the theoretical results. The simulation and results are presented, thus …

Simulation And Modeling Of Kinetics Of Silicon Oxidation In The Thin Oxide Regime, Tirthankar Dutta Dec 1991

Simulation And Modeling Of Kinetics Of Silicon Oxidation In The Thin Oxide Regime, Tirthankar Dutta

Theses

Thermal oxidation of Silicon in dry O2, in the thin regime(< 500A) is of vital importance to VLSI device engineers, because thin layers of SiO2 are exclusively used as gate dielectric for high performance of MOS devices. There exist a number of models to explain the kinetics of oxidation in this thin regime. However there is considerable variance among them and the reported rate constants, which are supposed to describe the oxidation process. Rather than arriving at an alternative model, the present study aims at an extensive study and simulation of existing models of oxidation in dry oxygen, in the thin regime, with a recent set of experimental data and …

The Effects Of Oxygen Tension On Nitrate Reduction By Pseudomonas Isolate, Hao-Jan Hsing Dec 1991

The Effects Of Oxygen Tension On Nitrate Reduction By Pseudomonas Isolate, Hao-Jan Hsing

Theses

It is a generally accepted concept that nitrate reduction only occurs under anaerobic conditions. Oxygen inhibits denitrification. However many studies of nitrate reduction under low oxygen tension have shown what has been called aerobic denitrification. This project examines the process of aerobic denitrification.

Oxgyen affects cell growth and the amount of nitrate utilized. When oxygen is absent, the cell growth rate is lower and nitrate utlization is higher then when oxygen is present.

Nitrate is reduced to nirite under anaerobic conditions. Nitrite accumulation did not continue increase. But increased then decreased producing a "Z" shaped graph when plotted.

Measurement Of The Removal Of Selected Vocs From A Municipal Treatment Plant, Hong Yu

Theses

Industrial wastewater contains a variety of volatile chemical constituents. The large majority of the volatiles are organics. Many of these volatile or¬ganic compounds (VOCs) end up in the effluent to wastewater treatment plants. It is necessary to estimate the emission of the VOCs from sewerage plants in order to study the fate of these volatile organic compounds.

This study focuses on the estimation and comparison of the emission of 28 volatile organic compounds from the water and air in four operation units of Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority (LRSA) wastewater treatment plant. The removal rates of these target compounds have been …

Design Of An Advanced Control Algorithm For A Nuclear Power Plant Feedwater Control System, Randall C. Ezzo Dec 1991

Design Of An Advanced Control Algorithm For A Nuclear Power Plant Feedwater Control System, Randall C. Ezzo

Theses

Electric power companies with nuclear power plants have been aggressively looking for ways to increase plant safety and availability by increasing the reliability and performance of the plant's control systems. The performance of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Station's feedwater control system can be significantly improved by replacing the proportional-integral compensator with a compensator based on modern control concepts. In response to a -10 inch reactor water level setpoint change, settling time is improved from 107 seconds with 3% overshoot to 34 seconds with no overshoot.

Three Dimensional Visualisation Of Tmj Anatomy Using Mri Techniques, Mythreyi T. Krishnaswamy Dec 1991

Three Dimensional Visualisation Of Tmj Anatomy Using Mri Techniques, Mythreyi T. Krishnaswamy

Theses

The best assessment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can only be done by the scanning the jaw and getting an image without invivo analysis which causes patient discomfort. There have been innumerable efforts to get the best view using CT techniques for three dimensional visualisation. But very few have done work using MRI techniques.

The TMJ is an integral part of the jaw and helps in mastication and biting. Since the joint is a hinge sliding articulation any dislocation causes immense pain and discomfort.

To get a better assessment of the TMJ, MRI techniques have been used for data acquisition. The …

Study Of A Non-Contact Gaging System Of Inspection, Gordhanbhai Ketan Patel Dec 1991

Study Of A Non-Contact Gaging System Of Inspection, Gordhanbhai Ketan Patel

Theses

The quality control function has traditionally been performed using manual inspection methods and statistical sampling procedures. Manual inspection is generally a time - consuming procedure which involves precise, yet monotonous work. It often requires that parts be removed from the vicinity of the production machines to a separate inspection area. This causes delays and often constitutes a bottleneck in the manufacturing schedule.

As a solution to the above problem a Non - Contact Gaging System developed by Optical Gaging Products, Inc., has been used here to study the feasibility of using an automated inspection system and a procedure of developing …

Extension And Applications Of Knitting Technique For Petri Net Synthesis, Yanzhong Zhang

Theses

Petri nets have been used for modeling and analyzing various systems [1,2,3,4,8]. One approach to Petri net synthesis is a knitting technique [4,5, 6,7]. It was developed for modeling concurrent systems. The Petri net model is incrementally expanded by adding paths of nodes according to rules. To extend the knitting technique to cover synchronized systems, a set of new rules based on synchronic distance concept is presented. The rules penult synchronizing M exclusive processes (M 2) to a synchronic distance of any positive integer N. They can be applied to both exclusive processes and independent processes. The resulting Petri net …

Integrated Anaerobic-Aerobic System For The Biodegradation Of Highly Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Cheng-Ming Kung Oct 1991

Integrated Anaerobic-Aerobic System For The Biodegradation Of Highly Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Cheng-Ming Kung

Dissertations

A two-step process was developed for the complete mineralization of hazardous chlorinated aromatic compounds. The system consisted of an anaerobic reactor, in which reductive dehalogenation took place, coupled with an aerobic reactor in which the complete mineralization of the products of the anaerobic dehalogenation occurred.

A mixed anaerobic culture from a municipal sewage treatment plant was enriched and then immobilized on silica-based porous beads to treat 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), which is the model target compound in this work. In the anaerobic reactor, TCP was degraded to 2,4-dichlorophenol which was, in turn, reduced to 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). Stoichiometric amounts of 4-CP were recovered …

A Common Application Model For Interfacing With Advanced Program To Program Communication/Vm, Joseph Viviano Jr. Oct 1991

A Common Application Model For Interfacing With Advanced Program To Program Communication/Vm, Joseph Viviano Jr.

Theses

The Merrill Lynch data processing environment is composed of a conglomeration of applications which reside on various platforms. LAN and minicomputer based applications coexist with those making their home in the mainframe arena. Unfortunately, coexistence does not imply cooperation, data uniformity, data centralization or coordinated application development. Within the Merrill Lynch mainframe arena alone there are two operating systems which reside across several computing complexes, MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) and VM (Virtual Machine). Critical business applications and data are unique to each of these environments. The problem lies in the need for cooperative processing and sharing of distributed data among …

Theses

Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN) are considered to become the standard communications networks in the near future. Major research efford is being applied in determining the appropriate mode of operation for B-ISDN systems. Two proposals, the Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM) and the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) claim to best fit the B-ISDN transmission requirements individually. A new method for B-ISDN traffic control is proposed in this paper. This method assigns priority levels to incoming traffic while integrating STM with ATM. A neural network is used to decide how the multiplexing of the incoming packets will be performed. Several traffic …

Biodegradation Of Phenol And 4-Chlorophenol Using A Single Species In A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Kung-Wei Wang Oct 1991

Biodegradation Of Phenol And 4-Chlorophenol Using A Single Species In A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Kung-Wei Wang

Theses

Biodegradation of phenol and 4-chlorophenol (4CP) using Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 17514) was studied in batch and sequencing batch reactors. Batch experiments were first performed in order to reveal the kinetics of biodegradation for each substrate. 4-Chlorophenol was degradable only in the presence of phenol, or immediately after exposure of the organism to phenol. It was postulated that an enzyme induced by the presence of phenol was necessary to initiate degradation of 4-chlorophenol.

A mathematical model was then developed to describe the dynamic behavior of both substrates in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The model utilized rate parameters obtained from batch …

Radiation From The Cylindrical Dielectric Taper, Tor-Odd Hoydal Sep 1991

Radiation From The Cylindrical Dielectric Taper, Tor-Odd Hoydal

Theses

The radiation problem of the cylindrical dielectric taper, excited by the HE11 dominant mode, is studied. A theoretical model and a numerical investigation into the radiation characteristics of such a tapered structure are presented. The model is based upon the combination of the exact modal field solutions for a step profile cylindrical dielectric waveguide, Local Mode Theory, and the Equivalence Principle for the determination of equivalent current densities.

The far-zone radiation field is considered to be the summation of the fields produced by two radiative components in the dielectric rod/conical structure: The "aperture" of the uniform dielectric rod at …

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene Sep 1991

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene

Theses

Numerous previous attempts have been made to determine the magnitude and the direction of forces acting on the hip joint. The mechanism of femoral neck fractures and the frequently occurring failure of its internal fixation has led engineers to analyze the forces involved. An unstable intertrochanteric fracture is one which lacks continuity of the bone cortex on the opposing surfaces of the proximal and digital fragments. A mathematical model is created in this study to examine the 135° and 150° nail plate. The results give an approximate estimation of stresses on the two plates. A 3D finite element model of …

Cascading Space Efficient Variation Of The Lzw Algorithm And Arithmetic Coding, Shobha Raj Sep 1991

Cascading Space Efficient Variation Of The Lzw Algorithm And Arithmetic Coding, Shobha Raj

Theses

Two known compression algorithms appropriate for communication are LZW and the Arithmetic Coding method. Both are adaptive and require no extra communication from the encoder to the decoder. Here we have considered a space efficient variation of the LZW algorithm which achieves better compression.

We present a scheme to cascade the space efficient variation of the LZW algorithm with Arithmetic Coding into a space efficient data compression algorithm which achieves a higher compression ratio and is appropriate for communication.
