Using The New Dual-Polarimetric Capability Of Wsr-88d To Eliminate Anomalous Propagation And Wind Turbine Effects In Radar-Rainfall, Bong Chul Seo, Witold F. Krajewski, Kumar Vijay Mishra Feb 2015

Using The New Dual-Polarimetric Capability Of Wsr-88d To Eliminate Anomalous Propagation And Wind Turbine Effects In Radar-Rainfall, Bong Chul Seo, Witold F. Krajewski, Kumar Vijay Mishra

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study addresses the effect that the interaction between anomalous radar beam propagation (AP) and wind turbines that are located far from the radar has on radar-rainfall estimates. The interference of wind turbines in radar observations may lead to significant errors in rainfall estimates since wind turbines are often clustered to form wind farms. In this study, we propose a novel approach - based on the polarimetric capability recently added to the WSR-88D NEXRAD radars - that identifies and eliminates wind turbine clutter along with common ground clutter AP effects. Our primary objective is to devise a physically meaningful and …

Gravitational Correction To Vacuum Polarization, Ulrich D. Jentschura Feb 2015

Gravitational Correction To Vacuum Polarization, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the gravitational correction to (electronic) vacuum polarization in the presence of a gravitational background field. The Dirac propagators for the virtual fermions are modified to include the leading gravitational correction (potential term) which corresponds to a coordinate-dependent fermion mass. The mass term is assumed to be uniform over a length scale commensurate with the virtual electron-positron pair. The on-mass shell renormalization condition ensures that the gravitational correction vanishes on the mass shell of the photon, i.e., the speed of light is unaffected by the quantum field theoretical loop correction, in full agreement with the equivalence principle. Nontrivial corrections …

Benchmarking Accurate Spectral Phase Retrieval Of Single Attosecond Pulses, Hui Wei, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, Chao Yu, C. D. Lin Feb 2015

Benchmarking Accurate Spectral Phase Retrieval Of Single Attosecond Pulses, Hui Wei, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, Chao Yu, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A single extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse or pulse train in the time domain is fully characterized if its spectral amplitude and phase are both determined. The spectral amplitude can be easily obtained from photoionization of simple atoms where accurate photoionization cross sections have been measured from, e.g., synchrotron radiations. To determine the spectral phase, at present the standard method is to carry out XUV photoionization in the presence of a dressing infrared (IR) laser. In this work, we examine the accuracy of current phase retrieval methods (PROOF and iPROOF) where the dressing IR is relatively weak such that photoelectron spectra …

A Systematic Comparison Of The Transverse Energy Minimization And Splitting Intensity Techniques For Measuring Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Fansheng Kong, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu Feb 2015

A Systematic Comparison Of The Transverse Energy Minimization And Splitting Intensity Techniques For Measuring Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Fansheng Kong, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past several decades, shear-wave splitting (SWS) analyses have been increasingly utilized to delineate mantle structure and probe mantle dynamics. However, the reported splitting parameters (fast polarization orientations and splitting times) are frequently inconsistent among different studies, partially due to the different techniques used to estimate the splitting parameters. Here, we report results from a systematic comparison of the transverse minimization (TM) and the splitting intensity (SI) techniques. The study was motivated by the fact that recent comparative studies led to conflicting conclusions, which include the suggestion that TM, which is arguably the most widely used SWS-measuring technique, performs …

Counter-Doped Jte, An Edge Termination For Hv Sic Devices With Increased Tolerance To The Surface Charge, Chih Fang Huang, Hua Chih Hsu, Kuan Wei Chu, Li Heng Lee, Ming Jinn Tsai, Kung Yen Lee, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a comparison of different techniques for SiC high-voltage devices is performed using numerical simulations. In particular, the method of counter doping (CD) introduced in the junction termination extension (JTE) region to create a multizone termination effect is investigated. Simulation shows that compared with the other edge termination techniques, CD-JTE greatly reduces the sensitivity of breakdown voltage (BV) to JTE doses and surface charges. The multizone CD-JTE with outer rings shows that for a 30-μm thick epi-layer, 90% of the theoretical BV is achievable with a wide tolerance of 11 x 1012 cm2 to the JTE …

We used aeromagnetic and gravity data to investigate the thermal structure beneath the incipient Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) in northwestern Botswana in order to understand its role in strain localization during rift initiation. We used three-dimensional (3-D) inversion of aeromagnetic data to estimate the Curie Point Depth (CPD) and heat flow under the rift and surrounding basement. We also used two-dimensional (2-D) power-density spectrum analysis of gravity data to estimate the Moho depth. Our results reveal shallow CPD values (8-15 km) and high heat flow (60-90 mW m-2) beneath a ∼60 km wide NE-trending zone coincident with major …

State-To-State Reaction Dynamics Of ¹⁸O+³²O₂ Studied By A Time-Dependent Quantum Wavepacket Method, Wenbo Xie, Lan Liu, Zhigang Sun, Hua Guo, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The title isotope exchange reaction was studied by converged time-dependent wave packet calculations, where an efficient 4th order split operator was applied to propagate the initial wave packet. State-to-state differential and integral cross sections up to the collision energy of 0.35 eV were obtained with 32O2 in the hypothetical j0 = 0 state. It is discovered that the differential cross sections are largely forward biased in the studied collision energy range, due to the fact that there is a considerable part of the reaction occurring with large impact parameter and short lifetime relative to the rotational period …

The London penetration depth λ(T) was measured in single crystals of Ce1-xRxCoIn5, R = La, Nd, and Yb down to Tmin ≈ 50mK (Tc/Tmin ∼ 50) using a tunnel-diode resonator. In the cleanest samples Δλ(T) is best described by the power law Δλ(T) α Tn, with n ∼ 1, consistent with the existence of line nodes in the superconducting gap. Substitutions of Ce with La, Nd, and Yb lead to similar monotonic suppressions of Tc; however, the effects on Δλ(T) differ. While La and Nd substitution leads to …

Orientation Error Analysis And Compenstation Of Orthogonal Array With Two-Dimension Vector Sensors, Peng Han, Chao Ren, Zhongge Zhang, Grant L. Steven Jan 2015

Orientation Error Analysis And Compenstation Of Orthogonal Array With Two-Dimension Vector Sensors, Peng Han, Chao Ren, Zhongge Zhang, Grant L. Steven

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the application of underwater target orientation using two-dimensional differential pressure vector sensors, both the elements of the vector sensors and the compensation algorithm will introduce target orientation errors. In this paper, simulation results of these target orientation errors reveal that channel response inconsistency errors contribute much more influence on the orthogonal array compared with the SNR, the target incident angle, and the unit location displacement. Based on this observation, a compensation algorithm for orientation estimation error is proposed and testing results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Real Time Anomaly Detection In Wide Area Monitoring Of Smart Grids, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Prasenjit Shil, Yiyu Shi Jan 2015

Real Time Anomaly Detection In Wide Area Monitoring Of Smart Grids, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Prasenjit Shil, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The real time anomaly detection in wide area monitoring of smart grids is critical to enhance the reliability of power systems. However, capturing the features of anomalous interruption and then detecting them at real time is difficult for large-scale smart grids, because the measurement data volume and complexity increases drastically with the exponential growth of data from the immense intelligent monitoring devices to be rolled out and the need for fast information retrieval from those mass data. Most of existing anomaly detection methods fail to handle it well. This paper proposes a spatial-Temporal correlation based anomalous behavior model to capture …

Fast And Accurate Emissivity And Absolute Temperature Maps Measurement For Integrated Circuits, Hsueh Ling Yu, Yih Lang Li, Tzu Yi Liao, Tianchen Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The comparison of temperatures (temperature correlation) obtained by measuring instruments and by thermal simulation is commonly necessary. Currently the way in which thermal maps are obtained by infrared thermographer yields inaccurate results since the emissivity values of all elements in an IC are ignored and measurement method assumes a constant emissivity. Without the correct settings of emissivity in infrared thermographer, the temperature variation could reach up to as high as 300 %. Coating black paint on the IC surface is a widely used method to assume the IC with constant emissivity and simplify the measurement procedures. Coating a uniform black …

Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For 3d Ics With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Wenjian Yu, Chao Zhang, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi Jan 2015

Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For 3d Ics With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Wenjian Yu, Chao Zhang, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) make use of the vertical dimension for smaller footprint, higher speed, lower power consumption, and better timing performance. In 3D ICs, the inter-tier-via (ITV) is a critical enabling technique because it forms vertical signal and power paths. Accordingly, it is imperative to accurately and efficiently extract the electrostatic capacitances of ITVs using field solvers. Unfortunately, the cylindrical via shape presents major challenges to most of the existing methods. To address this issue, we develop a novel floating random walk (FRW) method by rotating the transition cube to suit the cylindrical surface and devising a special …

Opportunistic Through-Silicon-Via Inductor Utilization In Lc Resonant Clocks: Concept And Algorithms, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Varun Mittapalli, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

LC resonant clock is an attracting option for low power on-chip clock distribution designs. However, a major limiting factor to its implementation is the large area overhead due to the conventional spiral inductors. On the other hand, idle through-silicon-vias (TSVs) in three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) can form vertical inductors with minimal footprint and little noise coupling with horizontal traces, particularly suitable for the application of LC resonant clock. However, due to the strict constraints on the location of idle TSVs, the use of the TSV inductor is limited by the constrained choices of its location, inductance and quality factor. …

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Standards Council selected this project as one of four winning research proposals for its 2014 Small Project Fellowship Program. Projectselections were based on several factors, including the potential for long-term impact on the industry; steel industry engagement and co-funding; and results for the AISI standards development committee, the student, and the academic institution. The objective of this project was to determine and compare the behavior and usable strength of existing floor and roof deck sections with both the Direct Strength Method (DSM) and Effective Width Method (EWM). It is anticipated that the results …

Direct Strength Method For Steel Deck, American Iron And Steel Institute

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

With the proposed reorganization of the AISI S100 Standard, the Direct Strength Method (DSM) will take a position of equal footing with the Equivalent Width Method (EWM) for calculating strength. The majority of previous DSM studies focus on C and Z profiles while little study of panel sections, especially steel deck sections, has been performed. A study was undertaken to determine and compare the behavior and usable strength of existing floor and roof deck sections with both DSM and EWM. The Cornell University – Finite Strip Method (CUFSM) was used for the elastic buckling analysis, taking into account the wide, …

Dephosphorylation Of Iqg1 By Cdc14 Regulates Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, Daniel P. Miller, Hana Kenton Hall, Ryan Chaparian, Madison Mara, Alison Mueller, Mark C. Hall, Katie Shannon

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cytokinesis separates cells by contraction of a ring composed of filamentous actin (F-actin) and type II myosin. Iqg1, an IQGAP family member, is an essential protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae required for assembly and contraction of the actomyosin ring. Localization of F-actin to the ring occurs only after anaphase and is mediated by the calponin homology domain (CHD) of Iqg1, but the regulatory mechanisms that temporally restrict actin ring assembly are not well defined. We tested the hypothesis that dephosphorylation of four perfect cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) sites flanking the CHD promotes actin ring formation, using site-specific alanine mutants. Cells expressing the …

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness Is Associated With Changes In Salivary Inflammatory Genes Transcripts, Matthew S. Thimgan, Cristina Toedebusch, Jennifer Mcleland, Stephen P. Duntley, Paul J. Shaw

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a ubiquitous problem that affects public health and safety. A test that can reliably identify individuals that suffer from EDS is needed. In contrast to other methods, salivary biomarkers are an objective, inexpensive, and noninvasive method to identify individuals with inadequate sleep. Although we have previously shown that inflammatory genes are elevated in saliva samples taken from sleep deprived individuals, it is unclear if inflammatory genes will be elevated in clinical populations with EDS. In this study, salivary samples from individuals with sleep apnea were evaluated using the Taqman low density inflammation array. Transcript levels …
