Composition- And Pressure-Induced Ferroelectric To Antiferroelectric Phase Transitions In Sm-Doped Bifeo₃ System, Fei Xue, Linyun Liang, Yijia Gu, Ichiro Takeuchi, Sergei V. Kalinin, Long-Qing Chen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A three-dimensional phenomenological model is proposed to describe both ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire theory. Its application to the multiferroic Sm-doped BiFeO3 system describes the temperature-, pressure-, and composition-induced ferroelectric to antiferroelectric phase transitions. The constructed temperature-composition and temperature-pressure phase diagrams show that compressive hydrostatic pressure and Sm doping have similar effects on the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phase transitions. It is also indicated from the temperature-pressure phase diagram that the experimentally observed phase of BiFeO3 under the hydrostatic pressure from 3 GPa to 10 GPa is a PbZrO3-like antiferroelectric phase.

Evaluation Of An Improved Technique For Geosynthetic-Reinforced And Pile-Supported Embankment, Jun Zhang, Shao Wen Liu, He Fu Pu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With a large number of applications of conventional technique for geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported (GRPS) embankment (called CT embankment), many deficiencies have been exposed. In view of the deficiencies, an improved technique, fixed-geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported embankment (called FGT embankment), is developed. To investigate the performance of the FGT embankment, the comparison analyses and parametric studies are conducted by Finite Element Method (FEM). The influencing factors investigated include elastic modulus of soil, tensile stiffness of geosynthetics, pile length, pile spacing, and pile elastic modulus. In addition, the cost evaluation for the FGT embankment and CT embankment is also made. The results show …

Biases In Thorpe-Scale Estimates Of Turbulence Dissipation. Part I: Assessments From Large-Scale Overturns In Oceanographic Data, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Louis St Laurent, James N. Moum

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oceanic density overturns are commonly used to parameterize the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. This method assumes a linear scaling between the Thorpe length scale LT and the Ozmidov length scale LO. Historic evidence supporting LTLO has been shown for relatively weak shear-driven turbulence of the thermocline; however, little support for the method exists in regions of turbulence driven by the convective collapse of topographically influenced overturns that are large by open-ocean standards. This study presents a direct comparison of LT and LO, using vertical profiles of temperature and microstructure shear collected in the Luzon Strait-a site characterized by …

Internal gravity waves, the subsurface analogue of the familiar surface gravity waves that break on beaches, are ubiquitous in the ocean. Because of their strong vertical and horizontal currents, and the turbulent mixing caused by their breaking, they affect a panoply of ocean processes, such as the supply of nutrients for photosynthesis1, sediment and pollutant transport2 and acoustic transmission3; they also pose hazards for man-made structures in the ocean4. Generated primarily by the wind and the tides, internal waves can travel thousands of kilometers from their sources before breaking5, making it …

Palladium-Catalyzed Annulation Of 9-Halophenanthrenes With Alkynes: Synthesis, Structural Analysis, And Properties Of Acephenanthrylene-Based Derivatives, En Chih Liu, Min-Kuan Chen, Jen-Yi Li, Yao-Ting Wu

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The palladium-catalyzed annulation of 9-bromoand 9-chlorophenanthrenes with alkynes gave 4,5-disubstituted acephenanthrylenes in yields of 58–95% (9 examples). Asymmetric alkynes, such as 1-phenyl-1-propyne, 1-phenyl- 1-hexyne, and 1-cyclopropyl-2-phenylethyne, regioselectively form (cyclo)alkyl-substituted products, following the regular rule that governs the carbopalladation of alkynes. This synthetic protocol can also be utilized in annulations with several p-extended bromoarenes, such as 7-5] helicene, 5- 4] helicene, 9-bromoanthracene, 3-bromoperylene, and 3-bromofluoranthene, to give the corresponding annulated products in moderate to good yields (51–86 %; 6 examples). Similarly, bromocorannulene produced highly curved 1,2-disubstituted cyclopentacorannulenes. Reactions of 6,12-dibromochrysene and 4,7-4] helicene with di(4-tolyl) ethyne provided the twofold annulated products …

Long-Range Atom-Wall Interactions And Mixing Terms: Metastable Hydrogen, Ulrich D. Jentschura Jan 2015

Long-Range Atom-Wall Interactions And Mixing Terms: Metastable Hydrogen, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the interaction of metastable 2S hydrogen atoms with a perfectly conducting wall, including parity-breaking S-P mixing terms (with full account of retardation). The neighboring 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 levels are found to have a profound effect on the transition from the short-range, nonrelativistic regime, to the retarded form of the Casimir-Polder interaction. The corresponding P state admixtures to the metastable 2S state are calculated. We find the long-range asymptotics of the retarded Casimir-Polder potentials and mixing amplitudes for general excited states, including a fully quantum electrodynamic treatment of the dipole-quadrupole mixing term. The decay width of the …

The Role Of Multiple Electron Capture In The X-Ray Emission Process Following Charge Exchange Collisions With Neutral Targets, Sebastian Otranto, N. D. Cariatore, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work we theoretically study photonic spectra that follow charge exchange processes between highly charged ions and neutral argon and CO targets. The range of collision energies studied is 5 eV/amu-10 keV/amu, covering typical EBIT-traps and Solar Wind energies. Our studies are based on multiple electrons schemes within the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Electrons are sorted with the sequential binding energies for the target under consideration. The role played by the multiple electron capture process for the different collision systems under consideration is explicitly analyzed and its contribution separated as arising from double radiative decay and autoionizing multiple …

One-Loop Dominance In The Imaginary Part Of The Polarizability: Application To Blackbody And Noncontact Van Der Waals Friction, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Grzegorz Lach, Maarten Dekieviet, Krzysztof Pachucki

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Phenomenologically important quantum dissipative processes include blackbody friction (an atom absorbs counterpropagating blueshifted photons and spontaneously emits them in all directions, losing kinetic energy) and noncontact van der Waals friction (in the vicinity of a dielectric surface, the mirror charges of the constituent particles inside the surface experience drag, slowing the atom). The theoretical predictions for these processes are modified upon a rigorous quantum electrodynamic treatment, which shows that the one-loop "correction" yields the dominant contribution to the off-resonant, gauge-invariant, imaginary part of the atom's polarizability at room temperature, for typical atom-surface interactions. The tree-level contribution to the polarizability dominates …

A Shear-Based Parameterization Of Turbulent Mixing In The Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Jordan M. Wilson, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, shear-based parameterizations of turbulent mixing in the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL) are proposed. A relevant length-scale estimate for the mixing length LM of the turbulent momentum field is constructed from the turbulent kinetic energy Ek and the mean shear rate S as. Using observational data from two field campaigns-the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment and the 1999 Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study (CASES-99)- is shown to have a strong correlation with LM. The relationship between LM and corresponds to the ratio of the magnitude of the tangential components of the turbulent momentum flux …

Hydraulic Design Of Baffles In Disinfection Contact Tanks, Zachary H. Taylor, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study focuses on understanding the hydraulic design of baffled contact tanks using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In particular, we address the key question: for a given footprint of a rectangular tank with a specified inlet width (Winlet), how does the hydraulic efficiency of a baffled tank depend on the configuration of internal baffles? In an effort to address this question, a carefully conceived parametric study consisting of 30 high-resolution two-dimensional (planar) simulations was conducted to quantify the hydraulic efficiency of a laboratory scale tank as a function of dimensional relationships between key baffle design dimensions (baffle opening length Lbo, …

Critical States Embedded In The Continuum, Milan Koirala, Alexey Yamilov, A. Basiri, Yaron Bromberg, Hui Cao, Tsampikos Kottos

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce a class of critical states which are embedded in the continuum (CSC) of a one-dimensional optical waveguide array with one non-Hermitian defect. These states are on the verge of being fractal and have real propagation constants. They emerge at a phase transition which is driven by the imaginary refractive index of the defective waveguide and it is accompanied by a mode segregation which reveals analogies with the Dicke super-radiance. Below this point the states are extended while above it they evolve to exponentially localized modes. An addition of a background gain or loss can turn these localized states …

Sensing Performance Study Of Sic, A Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Material Platform For Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Wei Du, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sensing properties of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based waveguide sensor on a wide bandgap semiconductor, silicon carbide (SiC), were studied. Compared to other waveguide sensors, the large bandgap energy of SiC material allows the sensor to operate in the visible and near infrared wavelength range, while the SPR effect by a thin gold film is expected to improve the sensitivity. The confinement factor of the sensor at various wavelengths of the incident light and refractive index of the analyte were investigated using an effective index method. Since the change of analyte type and concentration is reflected by the …

Experimental Study Of Crude Oil Emulsion Stability By Surfactants And Nanoparticles, Zainab Alabdulmohsen Jan 2015

Experimental Study Of Crude Oil Emulsion Stability By Surfactants And Nanoparticles, Zainab Alabdulmohsen

Masters Theses

"Surfactants and nanoparticles are materials being widely used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Surfactants are mainly used to reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water which could form a stable film of emulsion between these two immiscible fluids. Also, nanotechnology is a potential candidate to offer another solution to improve oil recovery. Nanoparticles can form a solid layer at the droplet's interface and stand as resistant stabilizer under harsh reservoir conditions.

This research investigates whether the combination of surfactants and nanoparticles can provide a more stable emulsion than surfactants only. Two parts of experimental study have been done in …

Numerical Study Of Upstream And Downstream Regions Of One Dimensional Detonation Wave In A Dusty Gas Medium, Shubhadeep Banik

Masters Theses

"In detonative combustion very high temperatures are attained by the burned gases. As a result, a large amount of thermal energy is produced during the combustion process. This heat can affect the state of the unburned fuel through radiation of heat from the burned gases. In this study a one-dimensional model was deemed appropriate to gain insight into the fundamental structure of the detonation wave. In this model, the detonation wave divides the fluid stream into an upstream region, consisting of fuel and oxidant, and a downstream region, consisting of burned gases. A set of computer programs, some developed during …

Argumentation Based Collaborative Software Architecture Design And Intelligent Analysis Of Software Architecture Rationale, Nagaprashanth Chanda Jan 2015

Argumentation Based Collaborative Software Architecture Design And Intelligent Analysis Of Software Architecture Rationale, Nagaprashanth Chanda

Masters Theses

"A growing model for software architecture defines it as a set of principle design decisions which drive system architects to design the architecture satisfying software requirements and architectural constraints. The design decision making process involves a group of stakeholders exchanging their viewpoints to address various concerns and to reach a consensus collaboratively. These architecture design decisions are usually made based on experiences since there aren't defined methods and models for architecture design. Each design decision yields a set of outcomes which impacts both the system architecture and the final product. As software product systems, tend to be large in size, …
