A Study Of Decision Process In Mcdm Problems With Large Number Of Criteria, Jian Liu, Peng Liu, Si Feng Liu, Xian Zhong Zhou, Tao Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an effective decision process method is proposed to address the challenge in a multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem because of large number of criteria. This method is based on the criteria reduction, tolerance relation, and prospect theory (PT). By building a discernibility matrix for tolerance relation (DMTR) in an MCDM problem with numerical values or interval numbers, this method first allows us to recognize a set of critical criteria from a large criteria pool and ignore the other criteria. Next, it establishes the criteria weights through the DMTR as they are usually not indicated in the data. …

Generalized Coupled-Line All-Pass Phasers, Shulabh Gupta, Qingfeng Zhang, Lianfeng Zou, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Christophe Caloz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Generalized coupled-line all-pass phasers, based on cascaded C-sections (CCSs), cascaded coupled-lines (CCLs), and hybrid-cascaded (HC) coupled transmission-line sections, are presented and demonstrated using analytical, full-wave, and experimental results. It is shown that for N commensurate coupled-line sections, CCL and HC phasers exhibit N group-delay peaks per coupled-line section harmonic frequency band, in contrast to the CCS configuration, which exhibits only one peak within this band. It is also shown that for a given maximum achievable coupling-coefficient, the HC configuration provides the largest group-delay swing. A wave-interference analysis is finally applied to the various coupled-line phasers, explaining their unique group-delay characteristics …

Cooperative Multi-Cell Mimo Downlink Precoding With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Wenhao Wu, Kun Wang, Weiliang Zeng, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work investigates the design of linear precoders in cooperative multi-cell MIMO downlink coverage for finite-alphabet source signals. Traditional design of multi-cell MIMO downlink precoder relies on Gaussian input assumption, which may lead to performance loss when true data inputs consist of discrete non-Gaussian symbols. This work presents optimized precoders for finite-alphabet input by maximizing the sum rate under per-base station power constraints. Specifically, we propose two distributed algorithms: a finite-alphabet signal Gaussian interference gradient projection algorithm and a block diagonalization alternating optimization algorithm while supporting interference cancellation. Our numerical results demonstrate considerable performance gain in terms of approximate transmission …

Directed Search For Gravitational Waves From Scorpius X-1 With Initial Ligo Data, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results of a search for continuously emitted gravitational radiation, directed at the brightest low-mass x-ray binary, Scorpius X-1. Our semicoherent analysis covers 10 days of LIGO S5 data ranging from 50-550 Hz, and performs an incoherent sum of coherent F-statistic power distributed amongst frequency-modulated orbital sidebands. All candidates not removed at the veto stage were found to be consistent with noise at a 1% false alarm rate. We present Bayesian 95% confidence upper limits on gravitational-wave strain amplitude using two different prior distributions: a standard one, with no a priori assumptions about the orientation of Scorpius X-1; …

Dilemma Of Dilemmas: How Collective And Individual Perspectives Can Clarify The Size Dilemma In Voluntary Linear Public Goods Dilemmas, Daniel Burton Shank, Yoshihisa Kashima, Saam Saber, Thomas Gale Mar 2015

Dilemma Of Dilemmas: How Collective And Individual Perspectives Can Clarify The Size Dilemma In Voluntary Linear Public Goods Dilemmas, Daniel Burton Shank, Yoshihisa Kashima, Saam Saber, Thomas Gale

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Empirical findings on public goods dilemmas indicate an unresolved dilemma: that increasing size—the number of people in the dilemma—sometimes increases, decreases, or does not influence cooperation. We clarify this dilemma by first classifying public goods dilemma properties that specify individual outcomes as individual properties (e.g., Marginal Per Capita Return) and group outcomes as group properties (e.g., public good multiplier), mathematically showing how only one set of properties can remain constant as the dilemma size increases. Underpinning decision-making regarding individual and group properties, we propose that individuals are motivated by both individual and group preferences based on a theory of collective …

The Loss Of Hh Responsiveness By A Non-Ciliary Gli2 Variant, Jinling Liu, Huiqing Zeng, Aimin Liu

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hedgehog signaling is crucial for vertebrate development and physiology. Gli2, the primary effector of Hedgehog signaling, localizes to the tip of the primary cilium, but the importance of its ciliary localization remains unclear. We address the roles of Gli2 ciliary localization by replacing endogenous Gli2 with Gli2ΔCLR, a Gli2 variant not localizing to the cilium. The resulting Gli2ΔCLRKI and Gli2ΔCLRKI;Gli3 double mutants resemble Gli2-null and Gli2;Gli3 double mutants, respectively, suggesting the lack of Gli2ΔCLR activation in development. Significantly, Gli2ΔCLR cannot be activated either by pharmacochemical activation of Smo in vitro or by loss …

A Computational Intelligence Approach To System-Of-Systems Architecting Incorporating Multi-Objective Optimization, David M. Curry, Cihan H. Dagli Mar 2015

A Computational Intelligence Approach To System-Of-Systems Architecting Incorporating Multi-Objective Optimization, David M. Curry, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A computational intelligence approach to system-of-systems architecting is developed using multi-objective optimization. Such an approach yields a set of optimal solutions (the Pareto set) which has both advantages and disadvantages. The primary benefit is that a set of solutions provides a picture of the optimal solution space that a single solution cannot. The primary difficulty is making use of a potentially infinite set of solutions. Therefore, a significant part of this approach is the development of a method to model the solution set with a finite number of points allowing the architect to intelligently choose a subset of optimal solutions …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to model the effect of mixture parameters and material properties on the hardened properties of, prestressed self-compacting concrete (SCC), and also to investigate the extensions of the statistical models, a factorial design was employed to identify the relative significance of these primary parameters and their interactions in terms of the mechanical and visco-elastic properties of SCC. In addition to the 16 fractional factorial mixtures evaluated in the modeled region of -1 to +1, eight axial mixtures were prepared at extreme values of -2 and +2 with the other variables maintained at the central points. Four replicate central mixtures …

Following recent work [e.g., J. Park et al., J. Rheol. 56, 1057-1082 (2012); T. Yaoita et al., Macromolecules 45, 2773-2782 (2012); and G. Ianniruberto et al., Macromolecules 45, 8058-8066 (2012)], we introduce the idea of a configuration dependent friction coefficient (CDFC) based on the relative orientation of Kuhn bonds of the test and surrounding matrix chains. We incorporate CDFC into the "toy" model of Mead et al. [Macromolecules 31, 7895-7914 (1998)] in a manner akin to Yaoita et al. [Nihon Reoroji Gakkaishi 42, 207-213 (2014)]. Additionally, we incorporate entanglement dynamics (ED) of discrete entanglement pairs into the new Mead-Banerjee-Park (MBP) …

Using Social Sensors For Influence Propagation In Networks With Positive And Negative Relationships, Basak Guler, Burak Varan, Kaya Tutuncuoglu, Mohamed Nafea, Ahmed A. Zewail, Aylin Yener, Damien Octeau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Online social communities often exhibit complex relationship structures, ranging from close friends to political rivals. As a result, persons are influenced by their friends and foes differently. Future network applications can benefit from integrating these structural differences in propagation schemes through socially aware sensors. In this paper, we introduce a propagation model for such social sensor networks with positive and negative relationship types. We tackle two main scenarios based on this model. The first one is to minimize the end-to-end propagation cost of influencing a target person in favor of an idea by utilizing sensor observations about the relationship types …

Control Of Fluid Dynamics By Nanoparticles In Laser Melting, Chao Ma, Lianyi Chen, Jiaquan Xu, Jingzhou Zhao, Xiaochun Li

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective control of fluid dynamics is of remarkable scientific and practical significance. It is hypothesized that nanoparticles could offer a novel means to control fluid dynamics. In this study, laser melting was used to investigate the feasibility of tuning fluid dynamics by nanoparticles and possibly breaking existing limits of conventional laser processing techniques. Alumina nanoparticles reinforced nickel samples, fabricated through electrocodeposition, were used for laser melting experiments. Since the melt pool surface is controlled by the fluid dynamics, surface topographies were carefully studied to reveal the nanoparticle effect on the fluid dynamics. Characterizations of surface topographies and microstructures of pure …

Interest-Driven Private Friend Recommendation, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The emerging growth of online social networks has opened new doors for various kinds of applications such as business intelligence and expanding social connections through friend recommendations. In particular, friend recommendation facilitates users to explore new friendships based on social network structures, user profile information (similar interest) or both. However, as the privacy concerns of users are on the rise, searching for new friends is not a straightforward task under the assumption that users' information is kept private. Along this direction, this paper proposes two private friend recommendation algorithms based on the social network structure and the users' social tags. …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Single Crystalline 4h-Sic Mems Devices With N-P-N Homoepitaxial Structure, Feng Zhao, Allen V. Lim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports single crystalline 4H-SiC MEMS with homoepitaxial n-p-n structure and its resonant characteristics under electrostatic actuation. Single crystalline fully exploits the superior material properties of SiC for operations in harsh environments. Compared to previously report p-n structure, the n-p-n structure makes electrostatic actuation applicable which is essentially important for applications of resonators and actuators to sensor devices. Such n-p-n structure, complementing the p-n structure, also further extends the capability of monolithic integration between SiC MEMS and electronic devices and circuits with not only p-n configurations such as diodes, but also n-p-n configurations such as BJTs and MOSFETs, etc.

Mechanism Of N -Hydroxylation Catalyzed By Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenases, Somayesadat Badieyan, Robert D. Bach, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aspergillus fumigatus siderophore (SidA), a member of class B flavin-dependent monooxygenases, was selected as a model system to investigate the hydroxylation mechanism of heteroatom-containing molecules by this group of enzymes. SidA selectively hydroxylates ornithine to produce N5-hydroxyornithine. However, SidA is also able to hydroxylate lysine with lower efficiency. In this study, the hydroxylation mechanism and substrate selectivity of SidA were systematically studied using DFT calculations. The data show that the hydroxylation reaction is initiated by homolytic cleavage of the O-O bond in the C4a-hydroperoxyflavin intermediate, resulting in the formation of an internal hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl radical (HO•). As the HO• moves …

Study of photon decay rate is essential to various optical devices, where graphene is an emerging building block due to its electrical tunability. In this paper, we study photon decay rate of a quantum emitter near a metallic split-ring resonator, which is embedded in a multilayered substrate incorporating a graphene layer. Analyzing photon decay rate in such a complex multilayered system is not only computationally challenging but also highly important to experimentally realizable devices. First, the dispersion relation of graphene plasmonics supported at a dieletric/graphene/dielectric structure is investigated systematically. Meanwhile, the dispersion relation of metallic plasmonics supported at a dielectric/metal …

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian-Higgs model in (1 + 1) space-time dimensions for the case of strongly broken gauge symmetry. In this limit the wells of the potential are almost harmonic and sufficiently deep, presenting a scenario far from the associated critical point. Using a multiscale perturbation expansion, the equations of motion for the fields are reduced to a system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Exact solutions of the latter are used to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the full dynamics of both the gauge and Higgs field in the form of oscillons and oscillating kinks. Numerical …
