Target electron removal in Li2+-Li collisions at 2290 keV/amu is studied experimentally and theoretically for ground and excited lithium target configurations. It is shown that in outer-shell ionization a single-electron process plays the dominant part. However, the K-shell ionization results are more difficult to interpret. According to our calculations, the process is shown to be strongly single-particle like. On one hand, a high resemblance between theoretical single-particle ionization and exclusive inner-shell ionization is demonstrated, and contributions from multi-electron processes are found to be weak. On the other hand, it is indicated by the discrepancy between experimental and single-particle …

A First-Principles-Based Model For Crack Formation In A Pressurized Tank Following An Mmod Impact, William P. Schonberg, J. Martin Ratliff Apr 2015

A First-Principles-Based Model For Crack Formation In A Pressurized Tank Following An Mmod Impact, William P. Schonberg, J. Martin Ratliff

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most robotic spacecraft have at least one pressurized vessel on board, usually a liquid propellant tank. One of the design considerations of such spacecraft is the anticipation and mitigation of the possible damage that might occur from on-orbit impacts by micro-meteoroids or orbital debris (MMOD). While considerable effort has been expended in the study of the response of non-pressurized spacecraft components to MMOD impacts, relatively few studies have been conducted on the pressurized elements of such spacecraft. In particular, since it was first proposed nearly 45 years ago, NASA's current evaluation methodology for determining impact-induced failure of pressurized tanks has …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Developing robust invitro models of in vivo environments has the potential to reduce costs and bring new therapies from the bench top to the clinic more efficiently. This study aimed to develop a biomaterial platform capable of modeling isotropic-to-anisotropic cellular transitions observed in vivo, specifically focusing on changes in cellular organization following spinal cord injury. In order to accomplish this goal, nebulized solvent patterning of aligned, electro spun poly-. l-lactic acid (PLLA) fiber substrates were developed. This method produced a clear topographic transitional boundary between aligned PLLA fibers and an isotropic PLLA film region. Astrocytes were then seeded on these …

Impact Of Symmetry On The Ferroelectric Properties Of Catio₃ Thin Films, Michael D. Biegalski, Liang Qiao, Yijia Gu, Apurva Mehta, Qian He, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Epitaxial strain is a powerful tool to induce functional properties such as ferroelectricity in thin films of materials that do not possess ferroelectricity in bulk form. In this work, a ferroelectric state was stabilized in thin films of the incipient ferroelectric, CaTiO3, through the careful control of the biaxial strain state and TiO6 octahedral rotations. Detailed structural characterization was carried out by synchrotron x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. CaTiO3 films grown on La0.18Sr0.82Al0.59Ta0.41O3 (LSAT) and NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates experienced a 1.1% biaxial strain state …

Consolidation-Induced Solute Transport For Constant Rate Of Strain. I: Model Development And Simulation Results, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical model, called CSTCRS1, is presented for coupled one-dimensional consolidation and solute transport under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading conditions. The consolidation algorithm accounts for vertical strain, general constitutive relationships, relative fluid velocity, changing compressibility and hydraulic conductivity during consolidation, and an external hydraulic gradient. The solute transport algorithm accounts for advection, dispersion, linear and nonlinear sorption, and equilibrium and nonequilibrium sorption. Soil compressibility is rate-independent and as such CSTCRS1 is more appropriate for less-structured soils. The model is based on a dual-Lagrangian framework that separately tracks the motions of sold and fluid phases. The development of CSTCRS1 …

Privacy-Aware Access Control For Message Exchange In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sushama Karumanchi, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vehicular ad hoc networks are a promising and increasingly important paradigm. Their applications range from safety enhancement to mobile entertainment services. However, their deployment requires several security issues to be resolved, particularly, since they rely on insecure wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic-based access control framework for vehicles to securely exchange messages in a controlled fashion by integrating moving object modeling techniques with cryptographic policies. To our knowledge, this is the first time a comprehensive framework for access control in VANETs is proposed.

Boyd Group Electronegativity Influence On The Parr Global Electrophilicity Of Vilsmeier Reagent-Derived Imidates: New Insights Toward Improving Mitsunobu Chemistry, Jeremy M. Carr, Gregory S. Tschumper, A. Paige Lathem

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reactivities of 19 methylated imidate analogs were examined using B3LYP and M06-2X DFT methods. The resulting HOMO and LUMO energies of each optimized structure were used to calculate corresponding Parr global electrophilicity (ω) values. When the resulting quantities were compared against Boyd group electronegativity (XG) values, a clear correlation was observed, suggesting that electron-withdrawing effects influence the reactivity of imidates. These findings represent an important first step in developing a novel method toward improving traditional Mitsunobu functionalization reactions.

Strong electron-donating functionality is desirable for many organic donor-π-bridge-acceptor (D-π-A) dyes. Strategies for increasing the electron-donating strength of common nitrogen-based donors include planarization of nitrogen substituents and the use of low resonance-stabilized energy aromatic ring-substituted nitrogen atoms. Organic donor motifs based on the planar nitrogen containing heterocycle indolizine are synthesized and incorporated into dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) sensitizers. Resonance active substitutions at several positions on indolizine in conjugation with the D-π-A π-system are examined computationally and experimentally. The indolizine-based donors are observed to contribute electron density with strengths greater than triarylamines and diarylamines, as evidenced by UV/Vis, IR absorptions, and …

Analytical Clustering Score With Application To Post-Placement Multi-Bit Flip-Flop Merging, Chang Xu, Peixin Li, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi, Iris Hui Ru Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Circuit clustering is usually done through discrete optimizations, with the purpose of circuit size reduction or design-specific cluster formation. Specifically, we are interested in the multi-bit flip-flop (MBFF) design technique for clock power reduction, where all previous works rely on discrete clustering optimizations. For example, INTEGRA was the only existing post-placement MBFF clustering optimizer with a sub-quadratic time complexity. However, it degrades the wirelength severely, especially for realistic designs, which may cancel out the benefits of MBFF clustering. In this paper we enable the formulation of an analytical clustering score in nonlinear programming, where the wirelength objective can be seamlessly …

Q-Learning Based Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Designs With Graceful Degradation, Yu Guang Chen, Wan Yu Wen, Tao Wang, Yiyu Shi, Shih Chieh Chang Mar 2015

Q-Learning Based Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Designs With Graceful Degradation, Yu Guang Chen, Wan Yu Wen, Tao Wang, Yiyu Shi, Shih Chieh Chang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) has been widely used to suppress power consumption in modern designs. The decision of optimal operating voltage at runtime should consider the variations in workload, process as well as environment. As these variations are hard to predict accurately at design time, various reinforcement learning based DVS schemes have been proposed in the literature. However, none of them can be readily applied to designs with graceful degradation, where timing errors are allowed with bounded probability to trade for further power reduction. In this paper, we propose a Q-learning based DVS scheme dedicated to the designs with graceful …

Low-Complexity Soft-Interference Cancellation Turbo Equalisation For Multi-Input-Multi-Output Systems With Multilevel Modulations, Jingxian Wu, Longbao Wang, Chengshan Xiao Mar 2015

Low-Complexity Soft-Interference Cancellation Turbo Equalisation For Multi-Input-Multi-Output Systems With Multilevel Modulations, Jingxian Wu, Longbao Wang, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study presents a low-complexity soft-interference cancellation equalizer (SICE) for the turbo detection of multiple-input-multiple-output systems operating in time dispersive channels. The SICE contains three time-invariant linear filters: a feedforward filter, a causal feedback filter and an anti-causal feedback filter. The feedforward filter is designed to suppress the InterSymbol interference because of channel time dispersion and the multiplexing interference from multiple transmit antennas. The causal (or anti-causal) feedback filter is developed to remove the residual interference caused by the symbols transmitted before (or after) the symbol under detection. The filters are designed by analyzing the statistical properties of soft decisions. …

Fall: A Fair And Low Latency Queuing Scheme For Data Center Networks, Lin Xue, Chui Hui Chiu, Suman Kumar, Praveenkumar Kondikoppa, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low latency, high throughput, and fairness are the stringent performance requirements of data center networks. For web applications continue to thrive, data center must remain effective by addressing these challenges. While most of the challenges have been handled by data center specific transport protocols (e.g. DCTCP), these transport protocols are not default options for data center users. Free choice of transport protocols demands careful consideration for an effective solution. We argue that queuing scheme at layer-2 switches hold the key to address these issues. Therefore, in this paper, we present FaLL, a queuing scheme for data center networks that meets …

Total Projectile Electron Loss Cross Sections Of U28+ Ions In Collisions With Gaseous Targets Ranging From Hydrogen To Krypton, G. Weber, M. O. Herdrich, Robert D. Dubois, P. M. Hillenbrand, H. Beyer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Beam lifetimes of stored U28+ ions with kinetic energies of 30 and 50 MeV/u, respectively, were measured in the experimental storage ring of the GSI accelerator facility. By using the internal gas target station of the experimental storage ring, it was possible to obtain total projectile electron loss cross sections for collisions with several gaseous targets ranging from hydrogen to krypton from the beam lifetime data. The resulting experimental cross sections are compared to predictions by two theoretical approaches, namely the CTMC method and a combination of the DEPOSIT code and the RICODE program.

Microfracture And Surfactant Impact On Linear Cocurrent Brine Imbibition In Gas-Saturated Shale, Yongpeng Sun, Baojun Bai, Mingzhen Wei Mar 2015

Microfracture And Surfactant Impact On Linear Cocurrent Brine Imbibition In Gas-Saturated Shale, Yongpeng Sun, Baojun Bai, Mingzhen Wei

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

During and after hydraulic fracturing, fluid-shale interaction has a prominent impact on liquid retention and thus on gas phase permeability and gas productivity. By providing a low surface tension or wettability alteration, surfactants are widely used to decrease liquid retention after fracturing. To evaluate the liquid intake of a rock sample, an imbibition experiment is commonly used, especially when it is treated by a surfactant. However, conventional imbibition experiments with gas shale could not quantitate the imbibition behaviors as it does with conventional rocks because of the low porosity and extremely low permeability of gas shale. In this paper, a …

The Fast Solver For Calculating The High Frequency Scattered Field From The Fock Current On The Surface Of The 3-D Convex Scatterer, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Mar 2015

The Fast Solver For Calculating The High Frequency Scattered Field From The Fock Current On The Surface Of The 3-D Convex Scatterer, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we first consider the Fock current from the 3-D convex cylinder. Next, on invoking the incremental length diffraction technique (ILDC), the resultant high frequency scattered fields are expressed in terms of the Fock current. We propose the NSDP method to calculate these scattered fields. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed NSDP method for calculating the high frequency scattered fields could achieve the frequency independent computational workload and error controllable accuracy.

Accuracy Enhancement Of The Equivalence Principle Algorithm Based On The Meshless Spherical Surface, Xin Fu, Lijun Jiang, Zuhui Ma Mar 2015

Accuracy Enhancement Of The Equivalence Principle Algorithm Based On The Meshless Spherical Surface, Xin Fu, Lijun Jiang, Zuhui Ma

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) employs cubical boxes to support equivalence sources. However, it introduces strong discontinuities. In this work, a spherical surface is employed as the equivalence surface in EPA to avoid singularities from non-smooth surfaces. Further to achieve high order accuracy, meshless samples are used for the integrals on the spherical surface to avoid the equivalence surface mesh discretization. Theoretically the accuracy of EPA can be significantly improved, which was further benchmarked though numerical examples. Various meshless schemes are also discussed to achieve the optimal solution based on the spherical equivalence surface.

Numeric Tuning Of Surface Plasmon Enhanced Spontaneous Emission Inducted By Nano-Metallic Particle Systems Embedded In Gan-Based Led, Ying Chou Lin, Duan Yang Liu, Jin Wei Gao

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, spontaneous emission enhancement inducted by surface plasmon on nano-metallic particle systems embedded in GaN-based LED is investigated numerically. The systems under study consist of two nano-Ag balls or cylinders. By numerically tuning geometrical parameters of the system and polarization of the photon emitting source, we investigate the dependence of spontaneous emission enhancement effect on those factors. It is found that the enhancement magnitude level and peak position are subject to geometrical characteristics of the nano-Ag components in different manners for symmetrical and asymmetrical systems respectively. Higher enhancement ratio for a specific wavelength can be obtained by tweaking …
