A Spatial-Dynamical Framework For Evaluation Of Satellite Rainfall Products For Flood Prediction, Felipe Quintero, Witold F. Krajewski, Ricardo Mantilla, Scott Small, Bong Chul Seo

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rainfall maps that are derived from satellite observations provide hydrologists with an unprecedented opportunity to forecast floods globally. However, the limitation of using these precipitation estimates with respect to producing reliable flood forecasts at multiple scales are not well understood. To address the scientific and practical question of applicability of space-based rainfall products for global flood forecasting, a data evaluation framework is developed that allows tracking the rainfall effects in space and time across scales in the river network. This provides insights on the effects of rainfall product resolution and uncertainty. Obtaining such insights is not possible when the hydrologic …

The prospect that protons from water may be transferred to N-heterocyclic molecules due to the presence of an excess electron is studied in hydrated azobenzene cluster anions using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and computational chemistry. In the case of s-triazine (C3H3N3), which has a positive adiabatic electron affinity, proton transfer is not energetically favored nor observed experimentally. Heterocyclic rings with only 1 or 2 nitrogen atoms have negative electron affinities, but the addition of solvating water molecules can yield stable negative ions. In the case of the diazines (C4H4N2: …

Influence Of The Substrate Characteristics On The Bond Behavior Of Pbo Frcm-Concrete Joints, Tommaso D'Antino, Lesley H. Sneed, Christian Carloni, Carlo Pellegrino

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites can be employed as a valid alternative to Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites for strengthening existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The weakness of FRCM-concrete joints has been reported to be at the matrix-fiber interface rather than within the concrete substrate, as is usually reported in the case of FRP-concrete joints. The experimental investigations regarding FRCM strengthening available in the literature have been performed by applying the FRCM composite onto a surface that was treated before the application, usually by grinding or sandblasting. However, the role of the substrate characteristics on the failure mechanism of …

Energy-Efficient Selective Activation In Femtocell Networks, Michael Lin, Simone Silvestri, Novella Bartolini, Thomas La Porta

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Provisioning the capacity of wireless networks is difficult when peak load is significantly higher than average load, for example, in public spaces like airports or train stations. Service providers can use femtocells and small cells to increase local capacity, but deploying enough femtocells to serve peak loads requires a large number of femtocells that will remain idle most of the time, which wastes a significant amount of power. To reduce the energy consumption of over-provisioned femtocell networks, we formulate a femtocell selective activation problem, which we formalize as an integer nonlinear optimization problem. Then we introduce Green Femto, a distributed …

Scientists are increasingly using the current state of the art big data analytic software (e.g., Hadoop, Giraph, etc.) for their data-intensive applications over HPC environment. However, understanding and designing the hardware environment that these data- and compute-intensive applications require for good performance is challenging. With this motivation, we evaluated the performance of big data software over three different distributed-cyber-infrastructures, including a traditional HPC-cluster called SuperMikeII, a regular datacenter called SwatIII, and a novel MicroBrick-based hyperscale system called CeresII, using our own benchmark Parallel Genome Assembler (PGA). PGA is developed atop Hadoop and Giraph and serves as a good real-world example …

Whose Talk Is Walked? It Decentralizability, Vendor Versus Adopter Discourse, And The Diffusion Of Social Media Versus Big Data, Shaila Miranda, Inchan Kim, Dawei David Wang

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Discourse plays a central role in organizing vision and computerization movement perspectives on IT innovation diffusion. While we know that different actors within a community contribute to the discourse, we know relatively little about the roles different actors play in diffusing different types of IT innovations. Our study investigates vendor versus adopter roles in social media and big data diffusion. We conceptualize the difference between the two IT innovations in terms of their decentralizability, i.e., extent to which decision rights pertinent to adoption of an organizational innovation can be decentralized. Based on this concept, we hypothesized: (1) adopters would contribute …

Assessing The Accuracy Of Some Popular Dft Methods For Computing Harmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of Water Clusters, J. Coleman Howard, Jordan D. Enyard, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A wide range of density functional theory (DFT) methods (37 altogether), including pure, hybrid, range-separated hybrid, double-hybrid, and dispersion-corrected functionals, have been employed to compute the harmonic vibrational frequencies of eight small water clusters ranging in size from the dimer to four different isomers of the hexamer. These computed harmonic frequencies have been carefully compared to recently published benchmark values that are expected to be very close to the CCSD(T) complete basis set limit. Of the DFT methods examined here, ωB97 and ωB97X are the most consistently accurate, deviating from the reference values by less than 20 cm-1 on …

Novel Time Domain Integral Equation Method Hybridized With The Macromodels Of Circuits, Huan Huan Zhang, He Ming Yao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a novel transient field-circuit simulation method based on the time-domain integral equation (TDIE) and circuit macromodels. The traditional field-circuit simulation method constructs the Kirchoff's equations for lumped circuits with SPICE models, but they cannot handle problems with unknown circuit structures. The proposed method creates parametric macromodels to represent the port constitutive relations of the unknown circuits. Then the obtained macromodel is coupled with TDIE to enable the transient field-circuit cosimulation. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. The proposed method is targeted to solve unknown I/O modeling issues in general signal integrity …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The slot antenna backed by the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity usually demonstrates very narrow bandwidth. In this paper, we extend the interpretation to our original dual mode SIW ring slot antenna so that a broadband radiation property based on the TE102 mode is unveiled for the first time. Through the experimental verification, over 12% bandwidth is conveniently achieved. The realized gain reaches over 7 dB. Its broadband working principle is studied in details. Simulated and measured data are both presented to verify the proposed ideas.

A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel approach using a hybrid combination of internal baffles and industrial packing material is investigated in order to optimize the hydraulic residence time of a 1,500-gal rectangular concrete tank. Hydraulic residence time, which is commonly classified using the baffling factor (BF), was determined from residence time distribution curves obtained using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and physical tracer studies. CFD simulations were used to model two scenarios. The first scenario was a base system consisting of an unbaffled concrete tank, and the second scenario was a two-baffle system. Computational simulation results were experimentally validated via tracer studies on …

Control Of Mesoscopic Transport By Modifying Transmission Channels In Opaque Media, Raktim Sarma, Alexey Yamilov, Seng Fatt Liew, Mikhael Guy, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

While controlling particle diffusion in a confined geometry is a popular approach taken by both natural and artificial systems, it has not been widely adopted for controlling light transport in random media, where wave interference effects play a critical role. The transmission eigenchannels determine not only light propagation through the disordered system but also the energy concentrated inside. Here, we propose and demonstrate an effective approach to modify these channels, whose structures are considered to be universal in conventional diffusive waveguides. By adjusting the waveguide geometry, we are able to alter the spatial profiles of the transmission eigenchannels significantly and …

A Low Complexity Reweighted Proportionate Affine Projection Algorithm With Memory And Row Action Projection, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new reweighted proportionate affine projection algorithm (RPAPA) with memory and row action projection (MRAP) is proposed in this paper. The reweighted PAPA is derived from a family of sparseness measures, which demonstrate performance similar to mu-law and the l0 norm PAPA but with lower computational complexity. The sparseness of the channel is taken into account to improve the performance for dispersive system identification. Meanwhile, the memory of the filter's coefficients is combined with row action projections (RAP) to significantly reduce computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RPAPA MRAP algorithm outperforms both the affine projection algorithm (APA) and …

Mixed-Criticality Job Models: A Comparison, Sanjoy K. Baruah, Zhishan Guo

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Vestal model in widely used in the real-time scheduling community for representing mixed-criticality real-time workloads. This model requires that multiple WCET estimates -- one for each criticality level in a system -- be obtained for each task. Burns suggests that being required to obtain too many WCET estimates may place an undue burden on system developers, and proposes a simplification to the Vestal model that makes do with just two WCET estimates per task. Burns makes a convincing case in favor of adopting this simplified model; here, we report on our attempts at comparing the two models -- Vestal’s …

The growing global drinking water crisis requires the development of novel advanced, sustainable, and cost-effective water treatment technologies to supplement the existing conventional methods. One such technology is advanced oxidation based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). DBD such as single and double planar and single and double cylindrical dielectric barrier configurations have been utilized for efficient degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants. The overall performance of the different DBD system varies and depends on several factors. Therefore, this review was compiled to give an overview of different DBD configurations vis-a-viz their applications and the in-situ mechanism of generation of free reactive …

Dgtd Analysis Of Electromagnetic Scattering From Penetrable Conductive Objects With Ibc, Ping Li, Yifei Shi, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To avoid straightforward volumetric discretization, a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method integrated with the impedance boundary condition (IBC) is presented in this paper to analyze the scattering from objects with finite conductivity. Two situations are considered. 1) The skin depth is smaller than the thickness of the conductive volume. 2) The skin depth is larger than the thickness of a thin conductive sheet. For the first situation, a surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is employed, wherein the surface impedance usually exhibits a complex relation with the frequency. To incorporate the SIBC into DGTD, the surface impedance is first approximated by …

Fast Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For The 3-D Ic Structures With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Chao Zhang, Wenjian Yu, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

3-D integrated circuits (3-D ICs) make use of the vertical dimension for smaller footprint, higher speed, lower power consumption, and better timing performance. In 3-D ICs, the inter-Tier-via (ITV) is a critical enabling technique because it forms vertical signal and power paths. Accordingly, it is imperative to accurately and efficiently extract the electrostatic capacitances of ITVs using field solvers. Unfortunately, the cylindrical via shape presents major challenges to most of the existing methods. To address this issue, we develop a novel floating random walk (FRW) method by rotating the transition cube to suit the cylindrical surface, devising a special space …

An Overview On Optimized Nlms Algorithms For Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Constantin Paleologu, Silviu Ciochină, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acoustic echo cancellation represents one of the most challenging system identification problems. The most used adaptive filter in this application is the popular normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, which has to address the classical compromise between fast convergence/tracking and low mis adjustment. In order to meet these conflicting requirements, the step-size of this algorithm needs to be controlled. Inspired by the pioneering work of Prof. E. Hänsler and his collaborators on this fundamental topic, we present in this paper several solutions to control the adaptation of the NLMS adaptive filter. The developed algorithms are "non-parametric" in nature, i.e., they …

Modeling Of Gas Production From Shale Reservoirs Considering Multiple Transport Mechanisms, Chaohua Guo, Mingzhen Wei, Hong Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gas transport in unconventional shale strata is a multi-mechanism-coupling process that is different from the process observed in conventional reservoirs. In micro fractures which are inborn or induced by hydraulic stimulation, viscous flow dominates. And gas surface diffusion and gas desorption should be further considered in organic nano pores. Also, the Klinkenberg effect should be considered when dealing with the gas transport problem. In addition, following two factors can play significant roles under certain circumstances but have not received enough attention in previous models. During pressure depletion, gas viscosity will change with Knudsen number; and pore radius will increase when …

Hierarchical Segmentation Of The Malawi Rift: The Influence Of Inherited Lithospheric Heterogeneity And Kinematics In The Evolution Of Continental Rifts, Daniel A. Lao-Davila, Haifa S. Al-Salmi, Mohamed G. Abdel Salam, Estella A. Atekwana

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We used detailed analysis of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-digital elevation model and observations from aeromagnetic data to examine the influence of inherited lithospheric heterogeneity and kinematics in the segmentation of largely amagmatic continental rifts. We focused on the Cenozoic Malawi Rift, which represents the southern extension of the Western Branch of the East African Rift System. This north trending rift traverses Precambrian and Paleozoic-Mesozoic structures of different orientations. We found that the rift can be hierarchically divided into first-order and second-order segments. In the first-order segmentation, we divided the rift into Northern, Central, and Southern sections. In its Northern Section, …
