Nonoscillation Criteria For Two-Dimensional Time-Scale Systems, Ozkan Ozturk, Elvan Akin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the existence and nonexistence of nonoscillatory solutions of a two-dimensional system of first-order dynamic equations on time scales. Our approach is based on the Knaster and Schauder fixed point theorems and some certain integral conditions. Examples are given to illustrate some of our main results.

Sneak-Out Principle On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Samir H. Saker Jan 2016

Sneak-Out Principle On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Samir H. Saker

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we show that the so-called "sneak-out principle" for discrete inequalities is valid also on a general time scale. In particular, we prove some new dynamic inequalities on time scales which as special cases contain discrete inequalities obtained by Bennett and Grosse-Erdmann. The main results also are used to formulate the corresponding continuous integral inequalities, and these are essentially new. The techniques employed in this paper are elementary and rely mainly on the time scales integration by parts rule, the time scales chain rule, the time scales Hölder inequality, and the time scales Minkowski inequality.

Oscillation Criteria For Fourth Order Nonlinear Positive Delay Differential Equations With A Middle Term, Said R. Grace, Elvan Akin Jan 2016

Oscillation Criteria For Fourth Order Nonlinear Positive Delay Differential Equations With A Middle Term, Said R. Grace, Elvan Akin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, we establish some new criteria for the oscillation of fourth order nonlinear delay differential equations of the form (Equation presented) provided that the second order equation (Equation presented) is nonoscillatiory or oscillatory. This equation with g(t) = t is considered in [8] and some oscillation criteria for this equation via certain energy functions are established. Here, we continue the study on the oscillatory behavior of this equation via some inequalities.

Responding To Disruptive Or Threatening Student Behavior: A Missouri S&T Guide For Faculty, Missouri University Of Science And Technology. Counseling, Disability Support, And Student Wellness

Red Folder Initiative

In an ideal world, we would not experience behavior that undermines instruction and, thereby, negatively impacts student learning. However, the unfortunate reality is that a small number of our students exhibit disruptive behavior in classrooms, lab areas, offices, field sites, and other educational settings, or via electronic means such as email, discussion boards, online meeting spaces, and audio video conferencing. This manual is intended to offer guidance and support should you need to respond to disruptive or threatening student behavior.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neuronostatin (NST) is a recently described peptide that is produced from the somatostatin preprohormone in pancreatic α-cells. NST has been shown to increase glucagon secretion from primary rat pancreatic islets in low-glucose conditions. Here, we demonstrate that NST increases proglucagon message in α-cells and identify a potential mechanism for NST's cellular activities, including the phosphorylation of PKA following activation of the G protein-coupled receptor, GPR107. GPR107 is abundantly expressed in the pancreas, particularly, in rodent and human α-cells. Compromise of GPR107 in pancreatic α-cells results in failure of NST to increase PKA phosphorylation and proglucagon mRNA levels. We also demonstrate …

Hypothalamic Action Of Phoenixin To Control Reproductive Hormone Secretion In Females: Importance Of The Orphan G Protein-Coupled Receptor Gpr173, Lauren M. Stein, Chloe W. Tullock, Stacy K. Mathews, David Garcia-Galiano, Carol F. Elias, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sexual maturation and maintenance of reproductive function are regulated by neurohormonal communication between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonads (referred to as the HPG axis). Phoenixin (PNX) is a newly identified, endogenous peptide abundantly produced in the hypothalamus and shown to be an important mediator of ovarian cyclicity. However, the underlying mechanisms by which phoenixin functions within the HPG axis are unknown. Previous in vitro studies demonstrated a direct action of PNX on gonadotrophs to potentiate gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) induced luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion. Therefore, we hypothesized that centrally derived phoenixin regulates the preovulatory LH surge required for ovarian cyclicity. We …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Genome sequencing technology has witnessed tremendous progress in terms of throughput as well as cost per base pair, resulting in an explosion in the size of data. Consequently, typical sequence assembly tools demand a lot of processing power and memory and are unable to assemble big datasets unless run on hundreds of nodes. In this paper, we present a distributed assembler that achieves both scalability and memory efficiency by using partitioned de Bruijn graphs. By enhancing the memory-to-disk swapping and reducing the network communication in the cluster, we can assemble large sequences such as human genomes (452 GB) on just …

Results showed that NO reduction was more than 90% in the absence of oxygen at 500 °C and in the presence of oxygen at 600 °C respectively. In a continues …

Modeling Resilience In System Of Systems Architecture, Paulette Acheson, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2016

Modeling Resilience In System Of Systems Architecture, Paulette Acheson, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

System of Systems (SoS) can be represented by the SoS architecture which defines the constituent systems and their interfaces. SoS delivers capabilities beyond what the systems working independently can provide. Resiliency of the SoS is becoming increasingly more important and necessary for mission success. Resiliency can be defined as the ability of the SoS architecture to defend against emerging threats. This defense means adapting the SoS architecture to handle the new threat. As a new threat is uncovered, the SoS architecture evolves to a new SoS architecture resilient to the new threat. This paper presents a novel approach to modeling …

Performance Enhancement Of Equivalence Principle Algorithm, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zu Hui Ma, Shi Quan He Jan 2016

Performance Enhancement Of Equivalence Principle Algorithm, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zu Hui Ma, Shi Quan He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The conventional equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) exploits cubical surfaces to support equivalent sources. However, it introduces strong discontinuities due to sharp edges and corners. In this letter, a spherical surface is employed as the equivalence surface to avoid singularities from nonsmoothness. To achieve better accuracy, the meshless sampling scheme is used for integral operators on the spherical equivalence surface. The numerical examples are provided to validate the performance enhancement of EPA through the proposed method.

Ionic And Electronic Conductivities Of Atomic Layer Deposition Thin Film Coated Lithium Ion Battery Cathode Particles, Rajankumar L. Patel, Jonghyun Park, Xinhua Liang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is imperative to ascertain the ionic and electronic components of the total conductivity of an electrochemically active material. A blocking technique, called the “Hebb-Wagner method”, is normally used to explain the two components (ionic and electronic) of a mixed conductor, in combination with the complex ac impedance method and dc polarization measurements. CeO2 atomic layer deposition (ALD)-coated and uncoated, LiMn2O4 (LMO) and LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 (LMNO) powders were pressed into pellets and then painted with silver to act as a blocking electrode. The electronic conductivities were derived from the currents obtained using …

Silicon-Wall Interfacial Free Energy Via Thermodynamics Integration, Wan Shou, Heng Pan Jan 2016

Silicon-Wall Interfacial Free Energy Via Thermodynamics Integration, Wan Shou, Heng Pan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compute the interfacial free energy of a silicon system in contact with flat and structured walls by molecular dynamics simulation. The thermodynamics integration method, previously applied to Lennard-Jones potentials [R. Benjamin and J. Horbach, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 044707 (2012)], has been extended and implemented in Tersoff potentials with two-body and three-body interactions taken into consideration. The thermodynamic integration scheme includes two steps. In the first step, the bulk Tersoff system is reversibly transformed to a state where it interacts with a structureless flat wall, and in a second step, the flat structureless wall is reversibly transformed into an …

Calculating Potential Energy Curves With Fixed-Node Diffusion Monte Carlo: Co And N₂, Andrew D. Powell, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study reports on the prospect for the routine use of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) for the electronic structure problem, applying fixed-node Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) to generate highly accurate Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves (PECs) for small molecular systems. The singlet ground electronic states of CO and N2 were used as test cases. The PECs obtained by DMC employing multiconfigurational trial wavefunctions were compared with those obtained by conventional high-accuracy electronic structure methods such as multireference configuration interaction and/or the best available empirical spectroscopic curves. The goal was to test whether a straightforward procedure using available QMC codes could …

Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Courtney H. Fiebelman Jan 2016

Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Courtney H. Fiebelman

Masters Theses

”Sleep has previously been associated with lifespan. Monitoring sleep in any given fly over their lifetime facilitates the ability to predict the lifespan of that given fly. Using this estimate, lifespan can potentially correlate with biological age to identify when health parameters have declined.

To confirm that the prediction algorithm could identify short and long-lived flies, glutathione levels in heads and bodies were compared between two groups. The results showed this to be consistent in the bodies of wild-type Canton S male flies, and showed that glutathione was decreased in the predicted biologically older flies. These data show that glutathione …

Late Ordovician Tectonism In The North American Midcontinent: Constraints From U-Pb Detrital Zircon Geochronology, Daniel Nathan Meehan I Jan 2016

Late Ordovician Tectonism In The North American Midcontinent: Constraints From U-Pb Detrital Zircon Geochronology, Daniel Nathan Meehan I

Masters Theses

"Numerous sandstone filled depressions hosted in upper Cambrian to Middle Ordovociain dolostones in south-central Missouri have historically been identified as Pennsylvanian paleokarst structures. U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology is at odds the time of formation and sedimentological evidence challenges their classification. "Filled sink" deposits yield primary zircon age populations of 2.8-2.6 Ga (~50% of all analyzed grains), 1.2-1.1 Ga (~25%), 1.8-1.6 Ga (~15%) and 1.5-1.3 Ga (~10%). These zircon populations most likely originated from the Superior Craton and Midcontinent Rift and/or Grenville orogen, respectively. The Warrensburg and Moberly channel-fill sandstones of central Missouri were identified as good candidates for Pennsylvanian aged …

Mitigation Of Glass Weave Skew Using A Combination Of Low Dk Spread Glass, Multi-Ply Dielectric And Routing Direction, Kartheek Nalla Jan 2016

Mitigation Of Glass Weave Skew Using A Combination Of Low Dk Spread Glass, Multi-Ply Dielectric And Routing Direction, Kartheek Nalla

Masters Theses

"As the data rates increase into the multi-gigabit range, the bit periods fall in the range of few tens of picoseconds. At above few Gbps, it becomes very important to reduce skew between differential pairs as it can adversely impact the signal eye and thereby increase bit error rate. The goal of this study is to mitigate the skew contributed by woven glass fabric of PCB dielectrics.

The glass weave skew between differential pairs in a PCB occurs due to the difference in dielectric constants (DK) of glass and resin. This thesis aims to mitigate the skew by reducing the …

Automated Design Of Boolean Satisfiability Solvers Employing Evolutionary Computation, Alex Raymond Bertels Jan 2016

Automated Design Of Boolean Satisfiability Solvers Employing Evolutionary Computation, Alex Raymond Bertels

Masters Theses

"Modern society gives rise to complex problems which sometimes lend themselves to being transformed into Boolean satisfiability (SAT) decision problems; this thesis presents an example from the program understanding domain. Current conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL) SAT solvers employ all-purpose heuristics for making decisions when finding truth assignments for arbitrary logical expressions called SAT instances. The instances derived from a particular problem class exhibit a unique underlying structure which impacts a solver's effectiveness. Thus, tailoring the solver heuristics to a particular problem class can significantly enhance the solver's performance; however, manual specialization is very labor intensive. Automated development may apply hyper-heuristics …

Mechanistic Understanding Of Water-Rock Interactions During High-Salinity Water-Flooding Of Carbonate Reservoirs, Pu Han Jan 2016

Mechanistic Understanding Of Water-Rock Interactions During High-Salinity Water-Flooding Of Carbonate Reservoirs, Pu Han

Masters Theses

"Chemically tuned water-flooding provides a relatively cheap method of enhanced oil recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. Several possible recovery mechanisms such as mineral dissolution, multi-component ion exchange, double-layer expansion, adsorption/desorption from rock surface, reduction in interfacial tension, and fines migration that have been proposed are widely debated. The combination of these processes may result in wettability alteration that increases sweep efficiency of water-flooding. Here, wettability alteration due to water-rock interactions will be examined numerically.

To evaluate the wettability alteration, separation between breakthrough curves of the non-reactive component and the cations based on the chromatographic separation will be used due …
