To deal with the problem of the inclination measurement errors caused by the dynamic motions, such as rotational and accelerated rectilinear components, this paper puts forward an effective inclination measurement scheme and the corresponding error-compensation method based on one accelerometer and two gyroscopes. In addition, the principal prototype of the dynamic inclination measurement apparatus is set up to conduct experiments of turntable rotation test, trolley test, and the turntable sway test at different inclined angles, thus verifying the feasibility of the error-compensation method under the effects of the rotational motion, accelerated rectilinear motion or both motions at the same time. …

We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational wave transients in two sets of data collected by the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors between November 5, 2005 and September 30, 2007, and July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010, with a total observational time of 283.0 days and 132.9 days, respectively. The search targets gravitational wave transients of duration 10-500 s in a frequency band of 40-1000 Hz, with minimal assumptions about the signal waveform, polarization, source direction, or time of occurrence. All candidate triggers were consistent with the expected background; as a result we set 90% …

The discovery of the gravitational-wave (GW) source GW150914 with the Advanced LIGO detectors provides the first observational evidence for the existence of binary black hole (BH) systems that inspiral and merge within the age of the universe. Such BH mergers have been predicted in two main types of formation models, involving isolated binaries in galactic fields or dynamical interactions in young and old dense stellar environments. The measured masses robustly demonstrate that relatively "heavy" BHs (≳25 M⊙) can form in nature. This discovery implies relatively weak massive-star winds and thus the formation of GW150914 in an environment with …

On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory simultaneously observed a transient gravitational-wave signal. The signal sweeps upwards in frequency from 35 to 250 Hz with a peak gravitational-wave strain of 1.0x10-21. It matches the waveform predicted by general relativity for the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes and the ringdown of the resulting single black hole. The signal was observed with a matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 24 and a false alarm rate estimated to be less than 1 event per 203 000 years, equivalent to a …

The gravitational-wave signal GW150914 was first identified on September 14, 2015, by searches for short-duration gravitational-wave transients. These searches identify time-correlated transients in multiple detectors with minimal assumptions about the signal morphology, allowing them to be sensitive to gravitational waves emitted by a wide range of sources including binary black hole mergers. Over the observational period from September 12 to October 20, 2015, these transient searches were sensitive to binary black hole mergers similar to GW150914 to an average distance of ∼600 Mpc. In this paper, we describe the analyses that first detected GW150914 as well as the parameter estimation …

Tin oxide (SnO2) has a high theoretical capacity (∼782 mA h g-1), but it experiences large volume changes during charge and discharge cycles that cause rapid capacity fade, which limits its practical use as an anode material. In an attempt to solve this, we coated these particles with ultrathin electrochemically active iron oxide (FeOx) films that act as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase layer, thus stabilizing the SnO2 particles for better longevity of significantly improved performance at high current densities in a practical voltage window. Since there exists a tradeoff between species transport …

In this paper we present the results of the first low frequency all-sky search of continuous gravitational wave signals conducted on Virgo VSR2 and VSR4 data. The search covered the full sky, a frequency range between 20 and 128 Hz with a range of spin-down between -1.0 x 10-10 and +1.5 x 10-11 Hz/s, and was based on a hierarchical approach. The starting point was a set of short fast Fourier transforms, of length 8192 s, built from the calibrated strain data. Aggressive data cleaning, in both the time and frequency domains, has been done in order to …

The interaction of an intense laser pulse with atoms and molecules depends extremely nonlinearly on the laser intensity. Yet experimentally there still exists no simple reliable methods for determining the peak laser intensity within the focused volume. Here we present a simple method, based on an improved Perelomov-Popov-Terent'ev model, that would allow the calibration of laser intensities from the measured ionization signals of atoms or molecules. The model is first examined by comparing ionization probabilities (or signals) of atoms and several simple diatomic molecules with those from solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We then show the possibility of using this …

A systematic study of the ion beam heating effect was performed in a temperature range of -170 to 900 °C using a 10 MeV Au3+ ion beam and a Yttria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) sample at a flux of 5.5 x 1012 cm-2 s-1. Different geometric configurations of beam, sample, thermocouple positioning, and sample holder were compared to understand the heat/charge transport mechanisms responsible for the observed temperature increase. The beam heating exhibited a strong dependence on the background (initial) sample temperature with the largest temperature increases occurring at cryogenic temperatures and decreasing with increasing temperature. …

A new accurate global potential energy surface for the ground electronic state of ozone [R. Dawes et al., J. Chem. Phys. 139, 201103 (2013)] was published fairly recently. The topography near dissociation differs significantly from previous surfaces, without spurious submerged reefs and corresponding van der Waals wells. This has enabled significantly improved descriptions of scattering processes, capturing the negative temperature dependence and large kinetic isotope effects in exchange reaction rates. The exchange reactivity was found to depend on the character of near-threshold resonances and their overlap with reactant and product wavefunctions, which in turn are sensitive to the potential. Here …

Bioactive glasses have found applications in diverse fields, including orthopedics and dentistry, where they have been utilized for the fixation of bone and teeth and as scaffolds for drug delivery. The present work outlines the characterization of two novel titanium-containing glass series, one silica-based and one borate-based. For the silica-based series, titanium is added at the expense of silicon dioxide whereas for the borate-based series, it is added at the expense of boron oxide as confirmed by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. Amorphous structures are obtained for silica-based glass at 15 mol% TiO2 and for borate-based glasses at 0 mol% and …

In this work, a new strategy for achieving efficient p-type doping in high bandgap nitride semiconductors to overcome the fundamental issue of high activation energy has been proposed and investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. Specifically, in an Al x Ga 1-x N/GaN superlattice structure, by modulation doping of Mg in the Al x Ga 1-x N barriers, high concentration of holes is generated throughout the material. A hole concentration as high as 1.1 x 10 18 cm -3 has been achieved, which is about one order of magnitude higher than that typically achievable by direct doping GaN. Results from first-principal …

The surface of polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (PAN) was chemically modified with 2-(2'-pyridyl) imidazole ligand (pim) to generate PAN-pim nanofibers. The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack of the pim anion on the nitrile groups of the PAN nanofibers. A 36% conversion of the acrylonitrile repeating units to AN-pim groups was obtained after 60 min at 70 °C using 1.0 mol/L pim ligand. The product was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and morphological analyses. The adsorption equilibrium and rate of nickel were studied in batch experiments and the data were correlated using the Non-ideal Competitive Adsorption (NICA) isotherm …

Due to the rising signal speed in today's integrated circuits (ICs), the digital input/output (I/O) device modeling becomes a very serious challenge. However, its nonlinearity issue was even less addressed. But for accurate EMC and EMI characterizations, the I/O nonlinearity could become a source of unexpected EMC and EMI troubles in the high-speed system. In this paper, we analyze the nonlinearity of high-speed drivers and loads under the influence of various parameters, such as the rising and falling times, data and clock duty cycle distortion (DCD), signal skew, balance of the circuit, etc. Further based on the spectrum property of …

Four D-π-A dyes (D=donor, A=acceptor) based on a 3,4-thienothiophene π-bridge were synthesized for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The proaromatic building block 3,4-thienothiophene is incorporated to stabilize dye excited-state oxidation potentials. This lowering of the excited-state energy levels allows for deeper absorption into the NIR region with relatively low molecular weight dyes. The influence of proaromatic functionality is probed through a computational analysis of optimized bond lengths and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) for both the ground- and excited- states. To avoid a necessary lowering of the TiO2 semiconductor conduction band (CB) to promote efficient dye-TiO2 electron …

Nanoantennas have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities for manipulating the intensity and direction of light emission over a broad frequency range. The directional beam steering offered by nanoantennas has important applications in areas including microscopy, spectroscopy, quantum computing, and on-chip optical communication. Although both the physical principles and experimental realizations of directional linear nanoantennas has become increasingly mature, angular control of nonlinear radiation using nanoantennas has not been explored yet. Here we propose a novel concept of nonlinear Yagi-Uda nanoantenna to direct second harmonic radiation from a metallic nanosphere. By carefully tuning the spacing and dimensions of two lossless dielectric elements, which …

1-Bit Compressed Sensing Based Framework For Built-In Resonance Frequency Prediction Using On-Chip Noise Sensors, Tao Wang, Jinglan Liu, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Significant noise will occur when the load currents of a chip contain frequency components that are close to its resonance frequency, which is mainly decided by power delivery network (PDN) capacitance and package inductance. Yet with technology scaling, the wire parasitic capacitance, which suffers from large process variations, starts to become a dominant contributor in the PDN capacitance, leading to a large resonance frequency variation across dies. It is thus important to know the resonance frequency of individual chips to effectively avoid resonance noise at runtime. Existing methods are mostly based on frequency sweeping, which are too expensive to apply …

Volterra series is a powerful tool for black-box macro-modeling of nonlinear devices. However, the exponential complexity growth in storing and evaluating higher order Volterra kernels has limited so far its employment on complex practical applications. On the other hand, tensors are a higher order generalization of matrices that can naturally and efficiently capture multi-dimensional data. Significant computational savings can often be achieved when the appropriate low-rank tensor decomposition is available. In this paper we exploit a strong link between tensors and frequency-domain Volterra kernels in modeling nonlinear systems. Based on such link we have developed a technique called speedy tensor-aided …

Distributed Attribute Based Access Control Of Aggregated Data In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sensor clouds are large scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs), built by connecting a number of smaller WSNs together. Each of these smaller individual WSNs may be owned by different owners. Sensor clouds are dynamic in nature, where wireless sensors can be provisioned and de-provisioned for the users on demand. In such a multi-user, multi-owner system, user access control is a significant problem. Previous user access control schemes have been centralized and designed for standalone sensors or smaller networks and do not take large networks into consideration. In large networks, data is generally aggregated in-network during data collection. In this paper, …

This paper deals with asymptotic behavior of nonoscillatory solutions of certain forced integrodifferential equations of the form: (a(t)x'(t))' = e (t) + ∫ tc (t - s)α - 1k(t,s)ƒ(s,x(s))ds, c > 1, 0 < α < 1. From the obtained results, we derive a technique which can be applied to some related integrodifferential as well as integral equations.
