A type of extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) fiber optic sensor, i.e., the microcavity strain sensor, is demonstrated for embedded, high-temperature applications. The sensor is fabricated using a femtosecond (fs) laser. The fs-laser-based fabrication makes the sensor thermally stable to sustain operating temperatures as high as 800 °C. The sensor has low sensitivity toward the temperature as compared to its response toward the applied strain. The performance of the EFPI sensor is tested in an embedded application. The host material is carbon fiber/bismaleimide (BMI) composite laminate that offer thermally stable characteristics at high ambient temperatures. The sensor exhibits highly linear response …

Recent incidents of hazardous accumulations of CO2 in homes on or adjacent to reclaimed mine land have been shown to be linked to neutralization reactions between acidic mine drainage and carbonate material. An efficient and economic method is necessary to identify the presence of acid mine drainage- (AMD-) derived CO2 on reclaimed mine land, prior to construction. One approach to identify the presence of AMD-derived CO2 is to characterize stable carbon isotope ratios of soil CO2. To do so, a viable method is necessary to acquire soil gas samples for isotope ratio analysis. This paper …

Influence Of Strong Preformed Particle Gels On Low Permeable Formations In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud O. Elsharafi, Baojun Bai
Influence Of Strong Preformed Particle Gels On Low Permeable Formations In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud O. Elsharafi, Baojun Bai
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In mature reservoirs, the success of preformed particle gel (PPG) treatment rests primarily on the ability of the PPG to reduce and/or plug the high permeable formations but not damage the low permeable formations. Static test models (filtration test model and pressure test model) were used to determine the effect of PPG on low permeable formations. This work used a strong preformed particle gel, Daqing (DQ) gel made by a Chinese company. The particle gel sizes were ranged from 30 to 120 mesh for this work. PPGs are sized in a millimeter or micrometer, which can absorb over a hundred …
Spatio-Temporal Generalization Of The Harris Criterion And Its Application To Diffusive Disorder, Thomas Vojta, Ronald Dickman
Spatio-Temporal Generalization Of The Harris Criterion And Its Application To Diffusive Disorder, Thomas Vojta, Ronald Dickman
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate how a clean continuous phase transition is affected by spatiotemporal disorder, i.e., by an external perturbation that fluctuates in both space and time. We derive a generalization of the Harris criterion for the stability of the clean critical behavior in terms of the space-time correlation function of the external perturbation. As an application, we consider diffusive disorder, i.e., an external perturbation governed by diffusive dynamics, and its effects on a variety of equilibrium and nonequilibrium critical points. We also discuss the relation between diffusive disorder and diffusive dynamical degrees of freedom in the example of model C of …

An Optimized Proportionate Adaptive Algorithm For Sparse System Identification, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Proportionate-type adaptive algorithms are commonly used for the identification of sparse impulse responses, like in network and acoustic echo cancellation. In this paper, we propose an optimized proportionate LMS adaptive filter in the context of a state variable model. The algorithm follows an optimization criterion based on the minimization of the system misalignment and uses an iterative procedure for computing the proportionate factors. Consequently, it achieves a proper compromise between the performance criteria, i.e., fast convergence/tracking and low mis adjustment. Simulations performed in the context of sparse system identification indicate the good behavior of the proposed algorithm.

Engineering Behavior And Characteristics Of Water-Soluble Polymers: Implication On Soil Remediation And Enhanced Oil Recovery, Shuang Cindy Cao, Bate Bate, Jong Wan Hu, Jongwon Jung
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Biopolymers have shown a great effect in enhanced oil recovery because of the improvement of water-flood performance by mobility control, as well as having been considered for oil contaminated-soil remediation thanks to their mobility control and water-flood performance. This study focused on the wettability analysis of biopolymers such as chitosan (85% deacetylated power), PEO (polyethylene oxide), Xanthan (xanthan gum), SA (Alginic Acid Sodium Salt), and PAA (polyacrylic acid), including the measurements of contact angles, interfacial tension, and viscosity. Furthermore, a micromodel study was conducted to explore pore-scale displacement phenomena during biopolymer injection into the pores. The contact angles of biopolymer …

Silicon Valley in northern California is the proverbial hub of technological innovation and industry. Its namesake derives from the fact that silicon acts as the main component in modern electronics; however, a new material called graphene is challenging its role. In its early years of research, it was evident that the qualities of graphene far exceeded expectations. Industries are going mad trying to come up with applications and consumer products. While headway has been made, it is hard to say how long it will take to see products advertising their new graphene capabilities. Before touch screens or graphene-based microprocessors can …

Innumeracy: The Product Of Misrepresentation, Elizabeth Cundiff
Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer
Innumeracy refers to one’s inability to understand mathematics. Or, more simply, innumeracy is mathematical illiteracy. The main problem with innumeracy is the fact that most of society does not see it as a problem. In fact, many people boast about their innumeracy. Consider a table of five people at a restaurant: they split the check and attempt to calculate the tip. More often than not, at least one individual at the table will joke about the fact that they don’t know how to do make that simple calculation. This flippancy toward the prevalence of mathematics has become an accepted norm, …

As mobile technologies have advanced, the idea of using them in health care applications has expanded greatly. In a 2011 paper by Boulos et al, the impact of mobile technology such as smartphones in health care was examined. Numerous benefits of the implementations were noted, such as how smartphones are able to provide a connection between both doctors and patients due to the network access capabilities of the device. Additionally, using the existing monitoring and sensor technologies on a smartphone can eliminate the need for other external devices, thus reducing the maintenance required by the patient. All in all, keeping …

The Implications Of Rfid Technology In University Id Cards, Michael Beaver
Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer
Radio frequency identification (RFID) chips have been rising in popularity because of their usefulness and convenience, and have now made their way into the ID cards of universities. An RFID chip is an identification device that, when powered by some nearby source, sends out a signal with information that was stored in the chip. RFID physical security systems work just like a lock and key, with the RFID chip acting as the key. Instead of having a unique pattern, RFID chips have an identification code that is read by the lock. Some RFID chips also hide this code behind a …

Feminine Film Style: Does It Really Exist? A Case Study Of Sofia Coppola’S Marie Antoinette And Zoe Cassavete’S Broken English, Alyson H. Stanley
Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer
Masculinity and femininity in American cinema has always been a controversial topic. The two constructs have been changing with societal expectations and progression, but in the past, every time women and femininity have been granted a chance to develop in cinema, such as the introduction of the risqué flapper in the 1920s and the femme fatale of the 1950s, these developments were quelled by the inevitable return to traditional gender roles. But, after the feminist movement of the 1960s, there was no doubt about how extremely displeased women were with the current state of gender equality (Benshoff & Griffin, 2004). …

The world is in the midst of a technology revolution. Each day, new computing devices are introduced, hundreds of new websites are created, and people who have never used the Internet are trying it out for the first time. Nearly two thirds of Americans currently own a smartphone, and that number will only continue to climb (Fingas, 2014). Even cars, thermostats and refrigerators are becoming computerized and connected. This isn't groundbreaking information; most people are aware of this. What isn’t common knowledge, however, is who creates this technology. How does Google always seem to know exactly what you are asking …

Application Of Generalized Snoek's Law Over A Finite Frequency Range: A Case Study, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Y. Koledintseva
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Generalized Snoek's law proposed in an integral form by Acher and coauthors is a useful tool for investigation of high-frequency properties of magnetic materials. This integral law referred to as Acher's law allows for evaluating the ultimate performance of RF and microwave devices which employ magnetic materials. It may also be helpful in obtaining useful information on the structure and morphology of the materials. The key factor in practical application of Acher's law is an opportunity to employ either measured or calculated data available over a finite frequency range. The paper uses simple calculations to check the applicability of Acher's …

UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) plays an essential role in galactofuranose biosynthesis in pathogens by catalyzing the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose. Here we report the first crystal structure of a covalent intermediate in the UGM reaction. The 2.3 Å resolution structure reveals UDP bound in the active site and galactopyranose linked to the FAD through a covalent bond between the anomeric C of galactopyranose and N5 of the FAD. The structure confirms the role of the flavin as nucleophile and supports the hypothesis that the proton destined for O5 of galactofuranose is shuttled from N5 of the FAD via O4 of …

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a promising degree of freedom for fundamental studies in electromagnetics and quantum mechanics. The unlimited state space of OAM shows a great potential to enhance channel capacities of classical and quantum communications. By exploring the Pancharatnam-Berry phase concept and engineering anisotropic scatterers in a metasurface with spatially varying orientations, a plane wave with zero OAM can be converted to a vortex beam carrying nonzero OAM. In this paper, we proposed two types of novel perfect electric conductor-perfect magnetic conductor anisotropic metasurfaces. One is composed of azimuthally continuous loops and the other is constructed by azimuthally …

Hot-press molding of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (GFPP) laminates was monitored using longitudinally and transversely embedded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) at different locations in unidirectional laminates. The optical sensors proved to efficiently characterize some material properties; for example, strain variations could be related physical change of the laminate, revealing key transition points such as the onset of melt or solidification. These results were confirmed through some comparison with traditional techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry. After the GFPP plate was released from the mold, residual strains were estimated. Because cooling rate is an important process parameter in thermoplastics, affecting crystallinity and ultimately …

Resistance Of Arc Spot Welds -- Update To Provisions, American Iron And Steel Institute
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The provisions of the AISI S100-12 standard for strength of arc spot welds loaded in shear and tension have not been revised since the 1999 standard. Since then, four new research studies have created and tested arc spot welded connections, expanding the database of available tests. Therefore, a reconsideration of both the resistance equations and the resistance and safety factors using the enlarged data base was undertaken. This study performed a comprehensive analysis of the entire arc spot weld data base, where 450 specimens were categorized by their respective failure modes to assess current AISI S100-12 resistance equations. Performance of …

Random Field Disorder At An Absorbing State Transition In One And Two Dimensions, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta
Random Field Disorder At An Absorbing State Transition In One And Two Dimensions, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the behavior of nonequilibrium phase transitions under the influence of disorder that locally breaks the symmetry between two symmetrical macroscopic absorbing states. In equilibrium systems such "random-field" disorder destroys the phase transition in low dimensions by preventing spontaneous symmetry breaking. In contrast, we show here that random-field disorder fails to destroy the nonequilibrium phase transition of the one- and two-dimensional generalized contact process. Instead, it modifies the dynamics in the symmetry-broken phase. Specifically, the dynamics in the one-dimensional case is described by a Sinai walk of the domain walls between two different absorbing states. In the two-dimensional case, …

We report results of a wideband search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars within the Orion spur towards both the inner and outer regions of our Galaxy. As gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter, the search is unimpeded by dust and concentrations of stars. One search disk (A) is 6.87° in diameter and centered on 20h10m54.71s+33°33'25.29'', and the other (B) is 7.45° in diameter and centered on 8h35m20.61s-46°49'25.151''. Structural and magnetic properties of La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 (0 < x ≤ 0.7) have been studied in order to determine the effect of substitution of Cr3+ for Mn3+. The data consist of neutron and x-ray powder-diffraction and magnetization measurements. We previously suggested these systems transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ordering with the intermediate concentrations containing coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains. Upon further detailed examination, we find that the neutron data can be fit using a single homogeneous long-range magnetically ordered state and compositionally dependent charge ordering. The magnetic structures are controlled by the competition between Mn-Mn, Mn-Cr, and Cr-Cr interactions (double exchange and superexchange). The metal to …
