Paleolake sites on Mars, particularly buried deposits that have been shielded from surface radiation, serve as intriguing targets for the search for life. Mars-like ephemeral playa lakes here on Earth can offer insights and perspectives on the possibilities for physical, metabolic, and biomolecular biosignature recovery from similar environments on Mars.

The LIGO detection of GW150914 provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the two-body motion of a compact-object binary in the large-velocity, highly nonlinear regime, and to witness the final merger of the binary and the excitation of uniquely relativistic modes of the gravitational field. We carry out several investigations to determine whether GW150914 is consistent with a binary black-hole merger in general relativity. We find that the final remnant's mass and spin, as determined from the low-frequency (inspiral) and high-frequency (postinspiral) phases of the signal, are mutually consistent with the binary black-hole solution in general relativity. Furthermore, the data following …

Demonstrating how microscopic dynamics cause large systems to approach thermal equilibrium remains an elusive, longstanding, and actively pursued goal of statistical mechanics. We identify here a dynamical mechanism for thermalization in a general class of two-component dynamical Lorentz gases and prove that each component, even when maintained in a nonequilibrium state itself, can drive the other to a thermal state with a well-defined effective temperature.

Recent programmable networking paradigms, such as cloud computing, fog computing, software- defined networks, and network function virtualization gain significant traction in industry and academia. While these newly developed networking technologies open a pathway to new architectures and enable a faster innovation cycle, there exist many problems in this area. In this article, we provide a review of these programmable networking architectures for comparison. Second, we provide a survey of security attacks and defense mechanisms in these emerging programmable networking technologies.

Improving Kinematic Accuracy Of Soft Wearable Data Gloves By Optimizing Sensor Locations, Donghyun Kim, Sang Wook Lee, Hyung-Soon Park

Bending sensors enable compact, wearable designs when used for measuring hand configurations in data gloves. While existing data gloves can accurately measure angular displacement of the finger and distal thumb joints, accurate measurement of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint movements remains challenging due to crosstalk between the multi-sensor outputs required to measure the degrees of freedom (DOF). To properly measure CMC-joint configurations, sensor locations that minimize sensor crosstalk must be identified. This paper presents a novel approach to identifying optimal sensor locations. Three-dimensional hand surface data from ten subjects was collected in multiple thumb postures with varied CMC-joint flexion and abduction …

Lepton Pair Čerenkov Radiation Emitted By Tachyonic Neutrinos: Lorentz-Covariant Approach And Icecube Data, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Robert B. Ehrlich
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current experiments do not exclude the possibility that one or more neutrinos are very slightly superluminal or that they have a very small tachyonic mass. Important bounds on the size of a hypothetical tachyonic neutrino mass term are set by lepton pair Čerenkov radiation (LPCR), that is, by the decay channel → e+ e- , which proceeds via a virtual Z0 boson. Here, we use a Lorentz-invariant dispersion relation which leads to very tight constraints on the tachyonic mass of neutrinos; we also calculate decay and energy loss rates. A possible cutoff seen in the IceCube neutrino …

We have measured the angular distributions of high energy photoelectrons of benzene molecules generated by intense infrared femtosecond laser pulses. These electrons arise from the elastic collisions between the benzene ions with the previously tunnel-ionized electrons that have been driven back by the laser field. Theory shows that laser-free elastic differential cross sections (DCSs) can be extracted from these photoelectrons, and the DCS can be used to retrieve the bond lengths of gas-phase molecules similar to the conventional electron diffraction method. From our experimental results, we have obtained the C-C and C-H bond lengths of benzene with a spatial resolution …
Shear Behavior Of High-Strength Self-Consolidating Concrete In Nebraska University Bridge Girders, Alex Griffin, John J. Myers
Shear Behavior Of High-Strength Self-Consolidating Concrete In Nebraska University Bridge Girders, Alex Griffin, John J. Myers
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current reinforced and prestressed concrete design equations were developed for conventional concrete elements. Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) typically contains a lower coarse aggregate content and size than conventional concrete, which potentially hinders the aggregate interlock contribution to a concrete's shear strength. Thus, shear design equations must be verified with SCC mixtures. Two full-scale precast, prestressed concrete Nebraska University girders were tested to assess the shear behavior of high-strength SCC. Both girders were designed to permit two tests on each girder, both with and without shear reinforcement. Ultimate shear loads and crack patterns were documented and compared with code estimates, finite element …

This paper reports on a system using a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) to modulate a near-infrared laser source spatially and temporally. The DMD can produce an arbitrary heat source varying both spatially and temporally over the target. When the thermal response of the target surface is recorded using a thermal imager, this provides new possibilities in subsurface defect detection, partially with regard to features whose orientation does not allow them to be resolved using conventional thermographic inspection techniques. In this respect it is similar to conventional focused spot detection approaches; however, the DMD allows the signal to be frequency/phase multiplexed …

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has evolved as an important technique to coat conformal protective thin films on cathode and anode particles of lithium ion batteries to enhance their electrochemical performance. Coating a conformal, conductive and optimal ultrathin film on cathode particles has significantly increased the capacity retention and cycle life as demonstrated in our previous work. In this work, we have unearthed the synergetic effect of electrochemically active iron oxide films coating and partial doping of iron on LiMn1.5 Ni0.5O4 (LMNO) particles. The ionic Fe penetrates into the lattice structure of LMNO during the ALD process. …

It is common that spherical scatterers are used to represent air bubbles or brine inclusions embedded in the snow or sea ice layer. This physical configuration is then solved using radiative transfer theory to obtain backscattering coefficient from the snow or sea ice layer. With the advent of new techniques in computational electromagnetics, the typical theoretical model of single layer of snow or sea ice can be easily extended to consider types of scatterers which are of other shapes or irregular shapes. A computational electromagnetic method based on equivalence principle algorithm can be incorporated into existing theoretical model to calculate …

The process of electron-loss to the continuum (ELC) has been studied for the collision systems U28++H2 at a collision energy of 50 MeV/u, U28++N2 at 30 MeV/u, and U28++Xe at 50 MeV/u. The energy distributions of cusp electrons emitted at an angle of 0 with respect to the projectile beam were measured using a magnetic forward-angle electron spectrometer. For these collision systems far from equilibrium charge state, a significantly asymmetric cusp shape is observed. The experimental results are compared to calculations based on first-order perturbation theory, which predict an almost symmetric cusp …

Identifying nanomaterial-bio-interactions are imperative due to the broad introduction of nanoparticle (NP) applications and their distribution. Here, we demonstrate that silica NPs effect widespread protein aggregation in the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans ranging from induction of amyloid in nucleoli of intestinal cells to facilitation of protein aggregation in body wall muscles and axons of neural cells. Proteomic screening revealed that exposure of adult C. elegans with silica NPs promotes segregation of proteins belonging to the gene ontology (GO) group of "protein folding, proteolysis and stress response" to an SDS-resistant aggregome network. Candidate proteins in this group include chaperones, heat shock …

Wideband synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. A probe transmits a signal through its aperture incident to an object located in a medium of interest remotely from the probe. The probe receives through the aperture a plurality of nonuniformly sampled reflected signals from the object as the probe moves in a measurement plane located a predetermined distance from the object. A processor executes a SAR-based reconstruction algorithm to generate an image.

A high-speed vehicle or device presents a surface configured to move through a fluid such that the fluid flows across the surface in a primary flow direction. The vehicle or device also presents a subsurface spaced inwardly from the surface, as well as a plurality of cavity-defining structures that project generally outwardly from the subsurface and extend along the subsurface generally transverse to the primary flow direction. The cavity-defining structures are spaced apart in the primary flow direction. Each adjacent pair of the cavity-defining structures and the subsurface at least in part cooperatively define a cavity therebetween. Fluid rollers or …

This article details the re-examination of low-lying stationary points on the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of two challenging noncovalent homogeneous dimers, (P2)2 and (PCCP)2. The work was motivated by the rather large differences between MP2 and CCSD(T) energetics that were recently reported for these systems (J. Comput. Chem. 2014, 35, 479-487). The current investigation reveals significant qualitative and quantitative changes when the CCSD(T) method is used to characterize the stationary points instead of MP2. For example, CCSD(T) optimizations and harmonic vibrational frequency computations with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set indicate that the parallel-slipped (PS) structure is …

Occupational crash injuries of the foot present a significant reconstructive challenge due to the superficial location of structures such as tendon, joint and neurovascular network essential for proper acceptance of weight bearing and shear forces associated with bipedal gait. We discussed here a rare case in which an extensive degloving injury of the foot and combined with knee traumatic dislocation and proximal fibula tip fracture that underwent amputation. The authors suggested that none of treatment modalities of degloving are entirely satisfactory, so that each case must be considered independently with cons and pros
