Search For Transient Gravitational Waves In Coincidence With Short-Duration Radio Transients During 2007-2013, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present an archival search for transient gravitational-wave bursts in coincidence with 27 single-pulse triggers from Green Bank Telescope pulsar surveys, using the LIGO, Virgo, and GEO interferometer network. We also discuss a check for gravitational-wave signals in coincidence with Parkes fast radio bursts using similar methods. Data analyzed in these searches were collected between 2007 and 2013. Possible sources of emission of both short-duration radio signals and transient gravitational-wave emission include starquakes on neutron stars, binary coalescence of neutron stars, and cosmic string cusps. While no evidence for gravitational-wave emission in coincidence with these radio transients was found, the …

High-Energy Neutrino Follow-Up Search Of Gravitational Wave Event Gw150914 With Antares And Icecube, S. Adrian-Martinez, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the high-energy-neutrino follow-up observations of the first gravitational wave transient GW150914 observed by the Advanced LIGO detectors on September 14, 2015. We search for coincident neutrino candidates within the data recorded by the IceCube and Antares neutrino detectors. A possible joint detection could be used in targeted electromagnetic follow-up observations, given the significantly better angular resolution of neutrino events compared to gravitational waves. We find no neutrino candidates in both temporal and spatial coincidence with the gravitational wave event. Within ±500 s of the gravitational wave event, the number of neutrino candidates detected by IceCube and Antares were …

Selective modification (e.g. defect creation and amorphization) of diamond surfaces is of interests for functional diamond-based semiconductors and devices. Bombarding the diamond surface with high energy radiation sources such as electron, proton, and neutrons, however, often result in detrimental defects in deep bulk regions under the diamond surface. In this study, we utilized high energy carbon ions of 3 MeV to bombard the polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) specimen. The resultant microstructure of PDCs was investigated using micro Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the carbon bombardment successfully created point defects and amorphization in a shallow region of ∼500 nm deep …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Improving work zone road safety is an issue of great interest due to the high number of crashes observed in work zones. Departments of Transportation (DOTs) use a variety of methods to inform drivers of upcoming work zones. One method used by DOTs is work zone signage configuration. It is necessary to evaluate the efficiency of different configurations, by law, before implementation of new signage designs that deviate from national standards. This research presents a driving simulator based study, funded by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) that evaluates a driver’s response to work zone sign configurations. This study has …

A comprehensive study of dielectric modulated (DM) drift regions for power devices is presented in this paper. The performance of this structure is theoretically analyzed and compared with both conventional and super junction (SJ) structures. In this paper, an analytical model for DM drift regions with cylindrical cells is proposed and compared with linear cells. An optimal tradeoff between breakdown voltage (BV) and specific ON-resistance (R ON,sp) is obtained by a methodology developed in this paper. 3-D simulations of DM structures with hexagonal cells approximated by cylindrical cells are conducted to verify the analytical model. Optimal BV-R ON,sp tradeoffs for …

Material research on perovskite-type oxides (ABO3) has been driven by the recognition of their unique properties primarily attributed to the presence of oxygen octahedron (BO6). Since 2003, the discovery of strong coupling in TbMnO3 and BiFeO3 has stimulated new interests in understanding the relationship between magnetic and electric properties in perovskites. In this article, we report our recent work on the magnetic superexchange interaction and charge formation in copper-doped LaFeO3 using high-temperature neutron diffraction and thermoelectric measurements. In situ neutron diffraction measurements show a loss of antiferromagnetic ordering above 450°C. With an increase …

Water Quality In Selected Small Drinking Water Systems Of Missouri Rural Communities, Bin Hua, Ruipu Mu, Honglan Shi, Enos Inniss, John Yang

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small drinking water treatment systems (serving < 10,000 population) in rural communities frequently encounter multiple challenges in water quality and federal regulatory compliance, especially the disinfection byproduct (DBP) regulations, due to source water variations, limited resources, and aging infrastructures. Unlike most studies on the DBP control using synthetic water in laboratory settings, this research aimed to identify the major water quality issues confronting small systems in the state of Missouri (MO), the United States of America (USA). Three small systems were selected based on source water and geographic locations. Water samples were collected quarterly from each major treatment process during the period of May 2012 to March 2013 and analyzed to identify the treatment effectiveness and potential water quality issues in each small system. Results of water quality characterization showed that the major water quality issue in the selected small systems was the low efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal, especially the DOC species that are considered as the DBP precursors. Most collected water samples had a higher trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) maximum contaminant limit (MCL) (80 µg/L). Based on the analysis of the treatment efficiency in each system, several strategies for water quality improvement were recommended, and a few of which have been implemented in the small systems, leading to improved drinking water quality and compliance with the USEPA DBP regulations. This study would provide a valuable aid to small system operators and local water authority in context of water quality improvement and the regulatory compliance.

Probing And Extracting The Structure Of Vibrating Sf₆ Molecules With Inner-Shell Photoelectrons, Ngoc-Ty Nguyen, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin, Anh-Thu Le

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a scheme for probing the structure of vibrating molecules with photoelectrons generated from ultrashort soft-x-ray pulses. As an example we analyze below-100-eV photoelectrons liberated from the S(2p) orbital of vibrating SF₆ molecules to image very small structural changes of molecular vibration. In particular, photoionization cross sections and photoelectron angular distributions (PAD) at nonequilibrium geometries can be retrieved accurately with photoelectrons near the shape resonance at 13 eV. This is achieved with a pump-probe scheme, in which the symmetric stretch mode is first Raman excited predominantly by a relatively short laser pulse and then later probed at different time …

A New Set Of Potential Energy Surfaces For Hco: Influence Of Renner-Teller Coupling On The Bound And Resonance Vibrational States, Steve Alexandre Ndengué, Richard Dawes, Hua Guo

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is commonly understood that the Renner-Teller effect can strongly influence the spectroscopy of molecules through coupling of electronic states. Here we investigate the vibrational bound states and low-lying resonances of the formyl radical treating the Renner-Teller coupled X2A' and Ã2A" states using the MultiConfiguration Time Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The calculations were performed using the improved relaxation method for the bound states and a recently published extension to compute resonances. A new set of accurate global potential energy surfaces were computed at the explicitly correlated multireference configuration interaction (MRCI-F12) level and yielded remarkably close agreement with experiment in this …

Experimental and theoretical triple differential cross sections for intermediate-energy (250 eV) electron-impact single ionization of the CO2 are presented for three fixed projectile scattering angles. Results are presented for ionization of the outermost 1πg molecular orbital of CO2 in a coplanar asymmetric geometry. The experimental data are compared to predictions from the three-center Coulomb continuum approximation for triatomic targets, and the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) model. It is observed that while both theories are in reasonable qualitative agreement with experiment, the M3DW is in the best overall agreement with experiment.

In reply to the Comment of Jorge et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 066701 (2016)], we agree and reconfirm that the alternative classical trajectory Monte Carlo method (called hydrogenic-Z-CTMC) radial distributions for H*(n = 2) we recently published are not stable in time. However, we show that such lack of stability which is more noticeable for H(2s) than for H(2p) is due to the initialization procedure employed and not to the hydrogenic-Z-CTMC method itself. A new set of completely stable hydrogenic-Z-CTMC calculations for H*(n = 2) is introduced and found in very good agreement with standard microcanonical results reinforcing our …

Raman spectroscopy was applied to nail clippings from 633 postmenopausal British and Irish women, from six clinical sites, of whom 42% had experienced a fragility fracture. The objective was to build a prediction algorithm for fracture using data from four sites (known as the calibration set) and test its performance using data from the other two sites (known as the validation set). Results from the validation set showed that a novel algorithm, combining spectroscopy data with clinical data, provided area under the curve (AUC) of 74% compared to an AUC of 60% from a reduced QFracture score (a clinically accepted …

Emerging high-performance computing platforms, with large component counts and lower power margins, are anticipated to be more susceptible to soft errors in both logic circuits and memory subsystems. We present an online algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT) approach to efficiently detect and recover soft errors for general iterative methods. We design a novel checksum-based encoding scheme for matrix-vector multiplication that is resilient to both arithmetic and memory errors. Our design decouples the checksum updating process from the actual computation, and allows adaptive checksum overhead control. Building on this new encoding mechanism, we propose two online ABFT designs that can effectively recover …

Towards Practical Algorithm Based Fault Tolerance In Dense Linear Algebra, Panruo Wu, Qiang Guan, Nathan Debardeleben, Sean Blanchard, Dingwen Tao, Xin Liang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Algorithm based fault tolerance (ABFT) attracts renewed interest for its extremely low overhead and good scalability. However the fault model used to design ABFT has been either abstract, simplistic, or both, leaving a gap between what occurs at the architecture level and what the algorithm expects. As the fault model is the deciding factor in choosing an effective checksum scheme, the resulting ABFT techniques have seen limited impact in practice. In this paper we seek to close the gap by directly using a comprehensive architectural fault model and devise a comprehensive ABFT scheme that can tolerate multiple architectural faults of …

Proportionate Affine Projection Algorithms For Block-Sparse System Identification, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new family of block-sparse proportionate affine projection algorithms (BS-PAPA) is proposed to improve the performance for block-sparse systems. This is motivated by the recent block-sparse proportionate normalized least mean square (BS-PNLMS) algorithm. It is demonstrated that the affine projection algorithm (APA), proportionate APA, (PAPA), BS-PNLMS and PNLMS are all special cases of the proposed BS-PAPA algorithm. Meanwhile, an efficient implementation of the proposed BS-PAPA and block-sparse memory PAPA (BS-MPAPA) are also presented to reduce computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed BS-PAPA and BS-MPAPA algorithms outperform the APA, PAPA and MPAPA algorithms for block-sparse system identification in terms …

An Accurate Method Of Energy Use Prediction For Systems With Known Consumption, Jacob A. Mueller, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved method of nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) using hidden Markov models is proposed. The proposed method is intended for electrical systems with a closed and known set of devices. Systems that meet this constraint are more commonly found in industrial or commercial contexts than the residential settings in which NILM is traditionally studied. The proposed method is designed to support applications relevant to these contexts, such as fault monitoring and system health assessments. To this end, the energy predictions of the disaggregation algorithm offer accurate descriptions of device behavior in time. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated …

Effect Of The Inherent Eccentricity In Single-Lap Direct-Shear Tests Of Pbo Frcm-Concrete Joints, Tommaso D'Antino, Lesley Sneed, Christian Carloni, Carlo Pellegrino

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Investigation of the bond between fiber reinforced composites and the substrates onto which they are applied is of critical importance to understand their failure mechanisms. The bond behavior can be studied using different experimental test set-ups; the most commonly used are the single-lap and double-lap direct-shear tests. Although single-lap shear tests are simpler to carry out than double-lap shear tests, the presence of an eccentricity between the pulling and restraining forces leads to a mixed mode fracture process at the interface, which may influence the results. This study investigates the eccentricity effect on the bond behavior of fiber reinforced cementitious …

Nonlinear I/O Characterization With The Time Domain Electromagnetic Simulations, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Huan Huan Zhang, Ying S. Cao, Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computational electromagnetic algorithms are indispensible to today's electromagnetic compatibility. However the nonlinear I/O modeling and its hybridized simulation with electromagnetic solvers were less addressed. In this paper, we discuss two major solutions we proposed for nonlinear I/O modeling. When the details of the circuit are given known, the SPICE circuit model can be employed in the simulation. However when the detail of the nonlinear I/O is not known, which happens often, a parametric macro model is first developed to replace the I/O before the hybridized characterization. The proposed techniques are mostly suitable for time domain based computational electromagnetics systems.

In this work, for the first time the electromagnetic features of graphene are characterized by a circuit model derived instead of fitted from the electric field integral equation (EFIE). The atomically thick graphene is equivalently replaced by an impedance surface. When it is magnetized, the impedance surface is anisotropic with a tensor conductivity. Based on EFIE, the graphene's circuit model can be derived by the partial element equivalency circuit (PEEC) concept. The anisotropic resistivity is modeled using a serial resistor with current control voltage sources (CCVSs). From the derived circuit model, electromagnetic properties of graphene can be conveniently analyzed. This …

There has been a tremendous research effort in recent years to move DC-DC converters on chip for enhanced performance. To reduce the large area overhead induced by conventional spiral inductors, existing literature has used through-silicon-vias (TSVs) inductors in basic DC-DC converters without feedback control. In this paper, we further study the possible application of TSV inductors in DC-DC converters with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)-controlled feedback. The DC-DC converter with TSV inductor is at par in terms of performance with other conventional designs in the literature. Experimental results show that by replacing conventional spiral inductors with TSV inductors, up to 4.3x …
