Secure Massive Mimo Transmission With An Active Eavesdropper, Yongpeng Wu, Robert Schober, Derrick Wing Kwan Ng, Chengshan Xiao, Giuseppe Caire

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we investigate secure and reliable transmission strategies for multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output systems with a multi-Antenna active eavesdropper. We consider a time-division duplex system where uplink training is required, and an active eavesdropper can attack the training phase to cause pilot contamination at the transmitter. This forces the precoder used in the subsequent downlink transmission phase to implicitly beamform toward the eavesdropper, thus increasing its received signal power. Assuming matched filter precoding and artificial noise (AN) generation at the transmitter, we derive an asymptotic achievable secrecy rate when the number of transmit antennas approaches infinity. For …

Single Particle Icp-Ms Method Development For The Determination Of Plant Uptake And Accumulation Of Ceo2 Nanoparticles, Yongbo Dan, Xingmao Ma, Weilan Zhang, Kun Liu, Chady Stephan, Honglan Shi

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) are among the most broadly used engineered nanoparticles that will be increasingly released into the environment. Thus, understanding their uptake, transportation, and transformation in plants, especially food crops, is critical because it represents a potential pathway for human consumption. One of the primary challenges for the endeavor is the inadequacy of current analytical methodologies to characterize and quantify the nanomaterial in complex biological samples at environmentally relevant concentrations. Herein, a method was developed using single particle-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) technology to simultaneously detect the size and size distribution of particulate Ce, particle concentration, …

The First Potential Energy Surfaces For The C₆Hˉ-H₂ And C₆Hˉ-He Collisional Systems And Their Corresponding Inelastic Cross Sections, Kyle M. Walker, Fabien Dumouchel, François Lique, Richard Dawes Jul 2016

The First Potential Energy Surfaces For The C₆Hˉ-H₂ And C₆Hˉ-He Collisional Systems And Their Corresponding Inelastic Cross Sections, Kyle M. Walker, Fabien Dumouchel, François Lique, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Molecular anions have recently been detected in the interstellar and circumstellar media. Accurate modeling of their abundance requires calculations of collisional data with the most abundant species that are usually He atoms and H2 molecules. In this paper, we focus on the collisional excitation of the first observed molecular anion, C6H-, by He and H2. Theoretical calculations of collisional cross sections rely generally on ab initio interaction potential energy surfaces (PESs). Hence, we present here the first PESs for the C6H--H2 and C6H--He van …

The thermal conductivity κ of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 was measured for heat currents parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c axis at temperatures down to 50 mK and in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Measurements were performed on samples with compositions ranging from optimal doping (x = 0.34, Tc = 39 K) down to dopings deep into the region where antiferromagnetic order coexists with superconductivity (x = 0.16, Tc = 7 K). In zero field, there is no residual linear term in κ(T) as T→0 at any doping, whether …

In Our Ever More Complex World, the Field of Analytics Has Dramatically Increased its Importance. Gut Feeling is No Longer Sufficient in Decision Making, But Intuition Has to Be Combined with Support from the Huge Amount of Data Available Today. Even If the Amount of Data is Enormous, the Quality of the Data is Not Always Good. Problems Arise in at Least Two Situations: I) the Data is Imprecise by Nature and Ii) the Data is Incomplete (Or There Are Missing Parts in the Data Set). Both Situations Are Problematic and Need to Be Addressed Appropriately. If These Problems Are …

Simultaneous Specimen Current And Time-Dependent Cathodoluminescence Measurements On Gallium Nitride, E. M. Campo, L. Hopkins, M. Pophristic, I. T. Ferguson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Time-dependent cathodoluminescence (CL) and specimen current (SC) are monitored to evaluate trapping behavior and evolution of charge storage. Examination of CL and SC suggests that the near band edge emission in GaN is reduced primarily by the activation of traps upon irradiation, and Gallium vacancies are prime candidates. At the steady state, measurement of the stored charge by empiric-analytical methods suggests that all available traps within the interaction volume have been filled, and that additional charge is being stored interstitially, necessarily beyond the interaction volume. Once established, the space charge region is responsible for the steady state CL emission and, …

Sorting Under Forbidden Comparisons, Avah Banerjee, Dana Richards

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we study the problem of sorting under forbidden comparisons where some pairs of elements may not be compared (forbidden pairs). Along with the set of elements V the input to our problem is a graph G(V, E), whose edges represents the pairs that we can compare in constant time. Given a graph with n vertices and m =(n2) - q edges we propose the first non-trivial deterministic algorithm which makes O((q + n) log n) comparisons with a total complexity of O(n2 + qω/2), where ω is the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An open-ended waveguide probe including a finite flange extending outwardly and functioning as an infinite flange. A signal source provides a microwave signal to the waveguide, which in turn transmits microwave electromagnetic energy incident upon an object to be tested. The finite flange at the waveguide's aperture is shaped to reduce scattering of the electromagnetic field reflected from the object and received by the aperture. The probe is adapted for coupling to a receiver for sampling the reflected electromagnetic field received by the aperture and the receiver is adapted for coupling to a processor for determining at least one material …

On The Flux Richardson Number In Stably Stratified Turbulence, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Jeffrey R. Koseff

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The flux Richardson number Rf (often referred to as the mixing efficiency) is a widely used parameter in stably stratified turbulence which is intended to provide a measure of the amount of turbulent kinetic energy k that is irreversibly converted to background potential energy (which is by definition the minimum potential energy that a stratified fluid can attain that is not available for conversion back to kinetic energy) due to turbulent mixing. The flux Richardson number is traditionally defined as the ratio of the buoyancy flux B to the production rate of turbulent kinetic energy P. An alternative generalized definition …

Cement Hydration-Based Micromechanics Modeling Of The Time-Dependent Small-Strain Stiffness Of Fly Ash-Stabilized Soils, Xin Kang, Louis Ge, Wen Cheng Liao Jun 2016

Cement Hydration-Based Micromechanics Modeling Of The Time-Dependent Small-Strain Stiffness Of Fly Ash-Stabilized Soils, Xin Kang, Louis Ge, Wen Cheng Liao

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A contact mechanics model, based on the Hertzian elastic contact theory and cementation coating development at particulate scale, was established to predict the time-dependent small-strain stiffness of Class C fly ash-stabilized soils during curing. The cementation coating development model was developed at particulate level based on the Arrhenius law to predict the contact radius growth. A hyperbolic time-temperature relationship was proposed to capture the temperature change of fly ash-stabilized soils and links the pozzolanic reaction rate with curing time. Model-predicted small-strain stiffness was evaluated through both published and experimental test results with good success. The micromechanics modeling indicated that the …

The Bay of Bengal has a complex upper-ocean temperature and salinity structure that is, in places, characterized by strong salinity stratification and multiple inversions in temperature. Here, two short time series from continuously profiling floats, equipped with microstructure sensors to measure subsurface mixing, are used to highlight implications of complex hydrography on upper-ocean heat content and the evolution of sea surface temperature. Weak mixing coupled with the existence of subsurface warm layers suggest the potential for storage of heat below the surface mixed layer over relatively long-time scales. On the diurnal time scale, these data demonstrate the competing effects of …

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report an integrated whispering gallery mode microresonator-based sensor probe for refractive index sensing. The probe was made by sealing a borosilicate glass microsphere into a thin-wall glass capillary pigtailed with a multimode optical fiber. The intensities of the resonant peaks were found decreasing exponentially (linearly in a log scale) with the increasing refractive index of the medium surrounding the capillary. The sensing capability of the integrated probe was tested using sucrose solutions of different concentrations and the resolution was estimated to be about 2.5 x 10-5 in the index range of 1.3458 to 1.3847. The integrated sensor probe …

The ability to directly follow and time-resolve the rearrangement of the nuclei within molecules is a frontier of science that requires atomic spatial and few-femtosecond temporal resolutions. While laser-induced electron diffraction can meet these requirements, it was recently concluded that molecules with particular orbital symmetries (such as πg) cannot be imaged using purely backscattering electron wave packets without molecular alignment. Here, we demonstrate, in direct contradiction to these findings, that the orientation and shape of molecular orbitals presents no impediment for retrieving molecular structure with adequate sampling of the momentum transfer space. We overcome previous issues by showcasing …

We report the observation of a gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar-mass black holes. The signal, GW151226, was observed by the twin detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on December 26, 2015 at 03:38:53 UTC. The signal was initially identified within 70 s by an online matched-filter search targeting binary coalescences. Subsequent off-line analyses recovered GW151226 with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13 and a significance greater than 5σ. The signal persisted in the LIGO frequency band for approximately 1 s, increasing in frequency and amplitude over about 55 cycles from 35 to 450 Hz, …

On September 14, 2015, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detected a gravitational-wave transient (GW150914); we characterize the properties of the source and its parameters. The data around the time of the event were analyzed coherently across the LIGO network using a suite of accurate waveform models that describe gravitational waves from a compact binary system in general relativity. GW150914 was produced by a nearly equal mass binary black hole of masses 36-4+5 M⊙ and 29-4+4M⊙; for each parameter we report the median value and the range of the 90% credible interval. …

The C-H Stretching Features At 3.2-3.5 Μm Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Aliphatic Sidegroups, Xuejuan Yang, Aigen Li, Rainer Glaser, Jianxin Zhong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The so-called "unidentified" infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 μm are ubiquitously seen in a wide variety of astrophysical regions. The UIE features are characteristic of the stretching and bending vibrations of aromatic hydrocarbon materials, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. The 3.3 μm aromatic C-H stretching feature is often accompanied by a weaker feature at 3.4 μm. The latter is generally thought to result from the C-H stretch of aliphatic groups attached to the aromatic systems. The ratio of the observed intensity of the 3.3 μm aromatic C-H feature to that of the 3.4 …

The Tian Shan is a tectonically complex intracontinental orogenic belt situated between the Tarim Basin and the Kazakh Shield. The vast majority of the previous shear wave splitting (SWS) measurements were presented as station averages, which are only valid when the anisotropy structure can be approximated by a single layer of anisotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry, i.e., a model of simple anisotropy. A variety of anisotropy-forming hypotheses have been proposed based on the station-averaged measurements. In this study, we measure the splitting parameters at 25 stations that recorded high-quality data from a wide back azimuthal range for the …
