Adaptive Control Architectures For Mitigating Sensor Attacks In Cyber-Physical Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Wassim M. Haddad, Eric M. Feron

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The accuracy of sensor measurements is critical to the design of high-performance control systems since sensor uncertainties can significantly deteriorate achievable closed-loop dynamical system performance. Sensor uncertainty can arise due to low sensor quality, sensor failure, or detrimental environmental conditions. For example, relatively cheap sensor suites are used for low-cost, small-scale unmanned vehicle applications that can result in inaccurate sensor measurements. Alternatively, sensor measurements can also be corrupted by malicious attacks if dynamical systems are controlled through large-scale, multilayered communication networks as is the case in cyber-physical systems. This paper presents several adaptive control architectures for stabilization of linear dynamical …

Generalizations On Active-Passive Dynamic Consensus Filters, J. Daniel Peterson, Tansel Yucelen, Eduardo Pasiliao Jul 2016

Generalizations On Active-Passive Dynamic Consensus Filters, J. Daniel Peterson, Tansel Yucelen, Eduardo Pasiliao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Active-passive dynamic consensus filters consist of agents subject to local observations of a process of interest (active agents) and agents without any observations (passive agents). In this paper, we introduce a new class of active-passive dynamic consensus filters using results from graph theory and systems science. Specifically, the proposed filters only require agents to exchange their current state information with neighbors in a simple and isotropic manner to reduce the overall information exchange cost of the network. In addition, we allow the roles of active and passive agents to be time-varying for making these filters suitable for a wide range …

The Equivalent Circuit Model For Electrostatic And Magnetostatic Biased Tunable Graphene As The Absorption Material, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Albert E. Ruehli Jul 2016

The Equivalent Circuit Model For Electrostatic And Magnetostatic Biased Tunable Graphene As The Absorption Material, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Graphene is being proposed as a new nano material for EMC shielding and absorption due to its tunable resistive characteristics. The surface conductivity of graphene can be flexibly tuned by the electrostatic and magnetostatic bias applied on the graphene surface. Hence, its absorption and radiation characteristics of graphene are changed accordingly. The static electric bias applied on the graphene patch can change the chemical potential and the surface conductivity of graphene. The static magnetic field can make the conductivity a dispersive and anisotropic tensor, which complicates most modeling methodologies. In this paper, a novel equivalent circuit model is proposed for …

A Novel Data Pattern Dependent Electromagnetic Emission Modeling For High Speed Multi-Channel Interconnects, Nick K.H. Huang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Xingyun Luo, Huichun Yu, Huasheng Ren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is becoming more serious when the data rate of the digital system continues increasing. However, its modeling and analysis are very challenging. In this paper, a novel electromagnetic superposition method is developed to model the electromagnetic emission for the high speed multi-channels on IC packagings. It employs the equivalence principle to obtain the electromagnetic field response over a broad spectrum. Then it uses the linear property of the passive parasitic system to superpose the contribution of different signal patterns. As a result, with limited pre-calculations, it is very convenient to compute the electromagnetic emission efficiently from different …

A New Model Reference Control Architecture: Stability, Performance, And Robustness, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we develop a new model reference control architecture to effectively suppress system uncertainties and achieve a guaranteed transient and steady-state system performance. Unlike traditional robust control frameworks, only a parameterization of the system uncertainty given by unknown weights with known conservative bounds is needed to stabilize uncertain dynamical systems with predictable system performance. In addition, the proposed architecture's performance is not dependent on the level of conservatism of the bounds of system uncertainty. Following the same train of thought as adaptive controllers that modify a given reference system to improve system performance, the proposed method is inspired …

In recent years, big data analysis has been widely applied to many research fields including biology, physics, transportation, and material science. Even though the demands for big data migration and big data analysis are dramatically increasing in campus IT infrastructures, there are several technical challenges that need to be addressed. First of all, frequent big data transmission between storage systems in different research groups imposes heavy burdens on a regular campus network. Second, the current campus IT infrastructure is not designed to fully utilize the hardware capacity for big data migration and analysis. Last but not the least, running big …

The temperature-pressure phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe3 is determined for the first time from a combination of magnetization, muon-spin-rotation, and electrical resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed near 2.1 GPa, but quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of a magnetic phase, likely modulated, AFMQ. Our density functional theory total energy calculations suggest a near degeneracy of antiferromagnetic states with small magnetic wave vectors Q allowing for the potential of an ordering wave vector evolving from Q = 0 to finite Q, as expected from the most recent theories on ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Our findings …

Linear Precoding For Cognitive Multiple Access Wiretap Channel With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Juening Jin, Chengshan Xiao, Meixia Tao, Wen Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the linear precoder design for cognitive multiple-access wiretap channel (CMAC-WT), where two secondary-user transmitters (STs) communicate with one secondary-user receiver (SR) in the presence of an eavesdropper and subject to interference threshold constraints at primary-user receivers (PRs). It designs linear precoders to maximize the ergodic secrecy sum rate for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) CMAC-WT under finite-alphabet inputs and statistical channel state information (CSI). For this non-convex problem, a two-layer algorithm is proposed by embedding the convex-concave procedure into an outer approximation framework. The key idea of this algorithm is to reformulate the approximated ergodic secrecy sum rate as …

Maximizing Coding Gain In Wireless Networks With Decodable Network Coding, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng, Lin Cai Jul 2016

Maximizing Coding Gain In Wireless Networks With Decodable Network Coding, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng, Lin Cai

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Network coding improves transmission efficiency by combining packets at relay nodes and thus reduces the number of packets sent to the network. It is a network layer solution to improve network throughput and transmission efficiency. However, a coded packet must be decodable by the destination, otherwise it is a waste of resource to combine them together and to deliver the coded packet. This paper addresses how to find the coding solution that guarantees decodability at the destination. We first quantify the coding gain as the number of transmissions reduced and then provide a method for runtime check whether a coding …

A Model-Free Localization Method For Sensor Networks With Sparse Anchors, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Wei Biao Wu Jul 2016

A Model-Free Localization Method For Sensor Networks With Sparse Anchors, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Wei Biao Wu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the problem of sensor node localization, where a total of an anchor nodes is used to determine the locations of other nodes based on the received signal strengths. Challenges arise when anchor nodes are sparse and locations of them are not at grid positions. A range-based machine learning algorithm is developed to tackle the challenges. Instead of using samples to calibrate the parameters of a chosen signal model, we use machine learning to estimate the signal propagation function and its parameters at the same time. It overcomes the model dependency issue of existing range-based algorithms and avoids …

In-Band Wormhole Detection In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks Using Change Point Detection Method, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Yi Ling, Wei Biao Wu Jul 2016

In-Band Wormhole Detection In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks Using Change Point Detection Method, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Yi Ling, Wei Biao Wu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses detecting in-band wormholes in wireless ad hoc networks. The detection scheme requires collecting the end-to-end delay of packets at the receiver and then applying a sequential change point detection algorithm to detect abrupt changes in the delay time series. A new change point detection algorithm, named SW-CLT, is proposed. The algorithm is based on the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) and does not involve using a preset detecting threshold. The algorithm is compared with the non-parametric cumulative sum (NP-CUSUM) because the non-parametric version is believed to be more robust to highly dynamic data than the parametric version. SW-CLT …

Co7se8 Nanostructures As Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction Reaction With High Methanol Tolerance, Jahangir Masud, Manashi Nath

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Co7Se8 nanostructures electrodeposited on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes show high efficiency for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high methanol tolerance as compared to Pt electrocatalysts. In the presence of methanol, the onset potential for the ORR at Pt/GC is shifted from 0.931 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) to 0.801 V (vs RHE), whereas it remains the same (0.811 V vs RHE) at Co7Se8/GC in the presence and absence of methanol in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The Co7Se8/GC electrodes also showed high cyclability in the presence …

Effect Of Exposure Conditions On The Long-Term Dielectric Properties Of Mortar Samples Containing Asr Gel, Ashkan Hashemi, Kristen M. Donnell, R. Zoughi, Mehdi Rashidi, K. E. Kurtis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction between alkalis present in portland cement and amorphous or otherwise disordered siliceous minerals in particular aggregates. Through this reaction, reactive silica binds with hydroxyl and alkali ions and forms a gel, known as ASR gel. Recently, microwave materials characterization techniques have shown great potential for detecting ASR in mortar. However, the comprehensive understanding of variables that affect the extent of ASR in mortar and their interaction with microwave signals, in particular the effect of environmental exposure conditions requires more investigations. Therefore, parameters related to these conditions must be considered when using microwave techniques …

Sustainable mining has received much attention in recent years as a consequence of the negative impacts of mining and public awareness. The aim of this paper is to provide mining companies guidance on improving the sustainability of their sites through effective community engagement based on recent advances in the literature. It begins with a review of the literature on sustainable development and its relationship to stakeholder engagement. It then uses the literature to determine the dominant factors that affect community perceptions of mining projects. These factors are classified into five categories: environmental, economic, social, governance and demographic factors. Then, we …

Multi-Sensor Integration To Map Odor Distribution For The Detection Of Chemical Sources, Xiang Gao, Levent Acar Jul 2016

Multi-Sensor Integration To Map Odor Distribution For The Detection Of Chemical Sources, Xiang Gao, Levent Acar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses the problem of mapping odor distribution derived from a chemical source using multi-sensor integration and reasoning system design. Odor localization is the problem of finding the source of an odor or other volatile chemical. Most localization methods require a mobile vehicle to follow an odor plume along its entire path, which is time consuming and may be especially difficult in a cluttered environment. To solve both of the above challenges, this paper proposes a novel algorithm that combines data from odor and anemometer sensors, and combine sensors' data at different positions. Initially, a multi-sensor integration method, together …

Topological insulator Bi2Se3 has shown a number of interesting physical properties. Doping Bi2Se3 with copper or strontium has been demonstrated to make the material superconducting and potentially even a topological superconductor. The recent discovery of superconducting niobium-doped Bi2Se3 reveals an exciting new physical phenomenon, the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic ordering, as well as signatures of an odd-parity p-wave superconducting order. To understand this new phenomenon, a detailed knowledge of the electronic structure is needed. We present an observation of quantum oscillations in the magnetization (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) of …

Phytovolatilization Of Organic Contaminants, Matt Limmer, Joel Gerard Burken Jul 2016

Phytovolatilization Of Organic Contaminants, Matt Limmer, Joel Gerard Burken

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plants can interact with a variety of organic compounds, and thereby affect the fate and transport of many environmental contaminants. Volatile organic compounds may be volatilized from stems or leaves (direct phytovolatilization) or from soil due to plant root activities (indirect phytovolatilization). Fluxes of contaminants volatilizing from plants are important across scales ranging from local contaminant spills to global fluxes of methane emanating from ecosystems biochemically reducing organic carbon. In this article past studies are reviewed to clearly differentiate between direct- and indirect-phytovolatilization and we discuss the plant physiology driving phytovolatilization in different ecosystems. Current measurement techniques are also described, …

Localization And Broadband Follow-Up Of The Gravitational-Wave Transient Gw150914, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the …

Embedding The Behavior Macromodel Into Tdie For Transient Field-Circuit Simulations, Huan Huan Zhang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, He Ming Yao Jul 2016

Embedding The Behavior Macromodel Into Tdie For Transient Field-Circuit Simulations, Huan Huan Zhang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, He Ming Yao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel transient field-circuit simulation method based on the time-domain integral equation (TDIE) and circuit macromodels is proposed. The traditional field-circuit simulation process constructs Kirchoff's equations for linear or nonlinear lumped circuits, which cannot handle problems with unknown circuit structure. The proposed method creates parametric behavior macromodels to represent the port constitutive relations of the circuits. Artificial neural network technique is adopted to estimate the model parameters based on the known port voltages and currents. Then, the obtained macromodel is coupled with TDIE that describes the behavior of electromagnetic subsystem to form the equations of a whole system, which can …

Managing Contingencies In Smart Grids Via The Internet Of Things, Stefano Ciavarella, Jhi Young Joo, Simone Silvestri

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a framework for contingency management using smart loads, which are realized through the emerging paradigm of the Internet of things. The framework involves the system operator, the load serving entities (LSEs), and the end-users with smart home management systems that automatically control adjustable loads. The system operator uses an efficient linear equation solver to quickly calculate the load curtailment needed at each bus to relieve congested lines after a contingency. Given this curtailment request, an LSE calculates a power allowance for each of its end-use customers to maximize the aggregate user utility. This large-scale NP-hard problem is …
