This study presents a way of using South African coal fly ash by extracting metals such as Al and Fe with concentrated sulphuric acid, and then using the solid residue as a feedstock for the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite. The percentage of aluminum and iron oxides decreased from 28.0 ± 0.2% and 5.0 ± 0.1% in coal fly ash to 24.6 ± 0.1% and 1.6 ± 0.01% in the acid treated coal fly ash respectively. The fly ash-based zeolite ZSM-5 sample synthesized from the solid residue after extraction of Al and Fe, contained 62% of ZSM-5 zeolite pure phase with …

Decentralized Fault Diagnosis And Prognosis Scheme For Interconnected Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper deals with the design of a decentralized fault diagnosis and prognosis scheme for interconnected nonlinear discrete-time systems which are modelled as the interconnection of several subsystems. For each subsystem, a local fault detector (LFD) is designed based on the dynamic model of the local subsystem and the local states. Each LFD consists of an observer with an online neural network (NN)-based approximator. The online NN approximators only use local measurements as their inputs, and are always turned on and continuously learn the interconnection as well as possible fault function. A fault is detected by comparing the output of …

The Error Control Of Mixed-Form Fast Multipole Algorithm Based On The High-Order Multipole Rotation, Ling Ling Meng, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Tian Xia, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this letter, the mixed-form fast multipole algorithm (MF-FMA) with feasible error controllability is implemented through high-order multipole rotation that can make the translation matrices very sparse. The saving of both storage and CPU time makes it attainable to increase the number of harmonics in the middle frequency regime, thus shifting up the transition region of MF-FMA. Consequently, the broadband accuracy of the MF-FMA can be improved significantly.

Electromagnetic behaviour of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene at low frequencies is still a mystery. No conclusion is made from the experimental point of views. We systematically investigate the electromagnetic response of graphene at microwave frequencies, which are from direct current (DC) to 40 GHz. Both a coplanar transmission line embedded with different-sized graphene flakes of 48 x 48 and 48 x 240 μm2 and a microwave termination based on the graphene sheet of 6 x 6mm2 are manufactured through standard microfabrication procedures. We conclude that CVD graphene behaves as a frequency-independent surface resistance at the microwave frequencies, which is …

Electromagnetic (EM) waves with helical wave front carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), which is associated with the azimuthal phase of the complex electric field. OAM is a new degree of freedom in EM waves and is promising for channel multiplexing in the communication system. Although the OAM-carrying EM wave attracts more and more attention, the method of OAM generation at microwave frequencies still faces challenges, such as efficiency and simulation time. In this communication, by using the circuit theory and equivalence principle, we build two simplified models, one for a single scatter and one for the whole metasurface to predict …

Volterra series (VS) representation is a powerful mathematical model for nonlinear circuits. However, the difficulties in determining higher order Volterra kernels limited its broader applications. In this paper, a systematic approach that enables a convenient extraction of Volterra kernels from X-parameters is presented. A concise and general representation of the output response due to arbitrary number of input tones is given. The relationship between Volterra kernels and X-parameters is explicitly formulated. An efficient frequency sweep scheme and an output frequency indexing scheme are provided. The least square linear regression method is employed to separate different orders of Volterra kernels at …

Probabilistic Analysis And Verification Framework For Adaptive Flight Control, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Marcello Napolitano
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A crucial aspect that could facilitate the applications of adaptive control systems in aerospace applications is the development of effective validation and verification procedures. Most of the existing analysis and design frameworks for adaptive controllers are based on the Lyapunov direct method. One well-known drawback of this approach is the conservatism in the estimation of the uniform ultimate boundedness region with little practical utility. To overcome this limitation, a probabilistic framework for the design of uniform ultimate boundedness regions is proposed where uncertain parameters and adaptive controls are considered as random variables. In this framework, the design is translated into …

Silicon Carbide Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Waveguide Sensor With A Bimetallic Layer For Improved Sensitivity, Wei Du, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this letter, silicon carbide (SiC) waveguide-based surface plasmon resonance optical sensor with an Ag-Au bilayer metal configuration was studied. The wide bandgap energy of SiC allows the sensor to operate in visible and near-infrared range. The spectrum of resonant wavelength with refractive index shows improved sensitivity and sensing resolution in the Au-Ag bilayer configuration than in the single Au layer configuration. A sensitivity of 2581 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) indicated by the shift of resonant wavelength with refractive index was observed from a refractive index range of n=1.34–1.36, showing that the sensor is desirable for sensing in a series …

Aloe vera gel was extracted, formulated and deposited as thin films by a facile solution process for memory application. The memory cell features a simple structure, in which a dried Aloe vera film was sandwiched in between an Ag top and ITO bottom electrode that was deposited on a glass substrate. Digital information can be encoded and stored as different resistance states of the Aloe vera film. Experimental results reveal that bipolar resistive switching behavior of the Aloe vera film is due to electrochemical growth and dissolution of metallic filaments connecting the top and bottom electrodes. The resistive switching behavior …

The paper presents results of aerodynamic design of a rectangular wing in subsonic inviscid flow using surrogate-based local and global search algorithms. The aerodynamic design problem is formulated in Benchmark Cases 3 and 6 developed by the AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Discussion Group. Both involve lift-constrained drag minimization at a Mach number of 0.5 with relatively low lift coefficients (0.2625 and 0.375) with several nonlinear constraints and a small number design variables (up to 15). In this work, the local search is performed using variable-fidelity modelling and output space mapping, whereas the global search is performed using approximation-based surrogates. The paper …

This paper addresses a benchmark aerodynamic design problem proposed by the AIAA Aerodynamic Design Optimization Discussion Group: Drag minimization of the RAE 2822 in transonic viscous flow at a fixed lift coefficient with constraints on the pitching moment coefficient and the cross-sectional area. The single-objective optimization (SOO) problem is solved using surrogate-based optimization (SBO) with the surrogates constructed through output space mapping and variable-resolution Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics models. Improving the implementation of our search algorithms enabled us to obtain the SOO optimal design four times faster than in our prior work in terms of CPU time. To explore …

Airfoil Design Under Uncertainty Using Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos Theory And Utility Functions, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Slawomir Koziel, Adrian Bekasiewicz
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Fast and accurate airfoil design under uncertainty using non-intrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC) expansions and utility functions is proposed. The NIPC expansions provide a means to efficiently and accurately compute statistical information for a given set of input variables with associated probability distribution. Utility functions provide a way to rigorously formulate the design problem. In this work, these two methods are integrated for the design of airfoil shapes under uncertainty. The proposed approach is illustrated on a numerical example of lift-constrained airfoil drag minimization in transonic viscous flow using the Mach number as an uncertain variable. The results show that compared …

Pareto Ranking Bisection Algorithm For Em-Driven Multi-Objective Design Of Antennas In Highly-Dimensional Parameter Spaces, Adrian Bekasiewicz, Slawomir Koziel, Leifur Leifsson, Xiaosong Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A deterministic technique for fast surrogate-assisted multi-objective design optimization of antennas in highly-dimensional parameters spaces has been discussed. In this two-stage approach, the initial approximation of the Pareto set representing the best compromise between conflicting objectives is obtained using a bisection algorithm which finds new Pareto-optimal designs by dividing the line segments interconnecting previously found optimal points, and executing poll-type search that involves Pareto ranking. The initial Pareto front is generated at the level of the coarsely-discretized EM model of the antenna. In the second stage of the algorithm, the high-fidelity Pareto designs are obtained through optimization of corrected local-approximation …

Expedite Design Of Variable-Topology Broadband Hybrid Couplers For Size Reduction Using Surrogate-Based Optimization And Co-Simulation Coarse Models, Piotr Kurgan, Slawomir Koziel, Leifur Leifsson, Xiaosong Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we discuss a computationally efficient approach to expedite design optimization of broadband hybrid couplers occupying a minimized substrate area. Structure size reduction is achieved here by decomposing an original coupler circuit into low- and high-impedance components and replacing them with electrically equivalent slow-wave lines with reduced physical dimensions. The main challenge is reliable design of computationally demanding low-impedance slow-wave structures that feature a quasi-periodic circuit topology for wideband operation. Our goal is to determine an adequate number of recurrent unit elements as well as to adjust their designable parameters so that the coupler footprint area is minimal. …

The search for unconventional superconductivity has been focused on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and unique crystal lattices. Doped bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is a strong candidate, given the topological insulator nature of the parent compound and its triangular lattice. The coupling between the physical properties in the superconducting state and its underlying crystal symmetry is a crucial test for unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we report direct evidence that the superconducting magnetic response couples strongly to the underlying trigonal crystal symmetry in the recently discovered superconductor with trigonal crystal structure, niobium (Nb)-doped Bi2Se3 …

Cost Effective Surface Functionalization Of Gold Nanoparticles With A Mixed Dna And Peg Monolayer For Nanotechnology Applications, Risheng Wang, Isabella Bowling, Wenyan Liu
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
A cost effective and generally applicable co-functionalization of gold nanoparticles with a mixed DNA and PEG polymers is reported. Compared to the pure DNA functionalization method, this protocol uses a much smaller amount of thiol-DNA to achieve a similar binding efficacy of gold nanoparticles with DNA origami nanostructures. The lower consumption of DNA provides a scaling-up potential for the application of DNA-nanoparticle conjugates in nanotechnology.

A major limitation of using synthetic scaffolds in tissue engineering applications is insufficient angiogenesis in scaffold interior. Bioactive borate glasses have been shown to promote angiogenesis. There is a need to investigate the biofabrication of polymer composites by incorporating borate glass to increase the angiogenic capacity of the fabri-cated scaffolds. In this study, we investigated the bioprinting of human adipose stem cells (ASCs) with a polycaprolac-tone (PCL)/bioactive borate glass composite. Borate glass at the concentration of 10 to 50 weight %, was added to a mixture of PCL and organic solvent to make an extrudable paste. ASCs suspended in Matrigel …

Unconventional resources have played a significant role in changing oil industry plans recently. Shale formations in North America have huge oil in place, 900 billion barrels of recoverable oil in Bakken only. However, the predicted primary recovery is still low as less than 10%. Therefore, seeking for improved oil techniques to increase oil recovery in these complex plays is inevitable. In this paper, three stages of review have been combined to find out the applicability of the most feasible IOR methods in these unconventional reservoirs. Firstly, the most common fluid and rock properties of these reservoirs have been investigated and …

Assessment of well integrity has become more important for CCS and CO2-EOR as it has become apparent that wells represent the most likely migration pathway for CO2 to leave a CCS storage unit or a CO2-EOR reservoir. Although wells represent a migration pathway, they are also the best vehicle for employing technology monitoring CO2 injection and storage. This contradiction of being a potential migration path and key monitoring technology leads to a need to understand how monitoring wells may be similar or different in comparison to other types of wells with respect to migration …
