Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony Jan 2017

Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this dissertation is to give an analytic disc approach to the CR extension problem. Analytic discs give a very convenient tool for holomorphic extension of CR functions. The type function is introduced and showed how these type functions have direct application to important questions about CR extension. In this dissertation the CR extension theorem is proved for a rigid hypersurface M in C2 given by y = (Re ω)m(Im ω)n where m and n are non-negative integers. If the type function is identically zero at the origin, then there is no CR extension. …

Investigation Of Hydraulic Fracture Complexity And The Benefits Of Maximizing Or Minimizing Complexity In Unconventional Resources, Rashid Sheikh Kassim

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation discusses two separate, yet inter-related studies. The first study was an extension of historical work comparing transversely fractured versus longitudinally fractured horizontal wells in multiphase flow environment. The second study investigated hydraulic fracture complexities and the benefits of maximizing or minimizing complexities in unconventional resources and tight reservoirs.

The main objective of this research was to investigate fracture complexity and its impact on well performance and economics. To achieve that objective, three different integrated completions and reservoir models were built. Two of the three models, a hybrid reservoir model and micro-seismic based SRV (stimulated reservoir volume) model, were …

Numerical Investigation On Nonlocal Problems With The Fractional Laplacian, Siwei Duo Jan 2017

Numerical Investigation On Nonlocal Problems With The Fractional Laplacian, Siwei Duo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Nonlocal models have recently become a powerful tool for studying complex systems with long-range interactions or memory effects, which cannot be described properly by the traditional differential equations. So far, different nonlocal (or fractional differential) models have been proposed, among which models with the fractional Laplacian have been well applied. The fractional Laplacian (-Δ)α/2 represents the infinitesimal generator of a symmetric α-stable Lévy process. It has been used to describe anomalous diffusion, turbulent flows, stochastic dynamics, finance, and many other phenomena. However, the nonlocality of the fractional Laplacian introduces considerable challenges in its mathematical modeling, numerical simulations, and mathematical …

Geophysical Interpretation And Static Reservoir Modeling Of Structurally Complex Reservoir, Rg Oil Field Area, Sirte Basin, Libya, Abdalla A. Abdelnabi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cambrian-Ordovician and Upper Cretaceous reservoir formations are found in the central western Sirte Basin, the main oil producing region in the Sirte Basin, Libya. As a result of changes in sedimentary environments and structural activities, a number of irregularities in reservoir continuity have developed, which negatively affected the overall performance of the reservoir. Effective simulation of such complex reservoirs can be achieved by integrating geophysical, geological, and petrophysical data to construct a reliable full-field static model, which has the potential to simulate the vertical and lateral variations in the reservoir formations. In this study, 2D and 3D seismic data acquired …

Volumetric Error Compensation For 5-Axis Machine Tools, Jennifer Ruth Creamer Jan 2017

Volumetric Error Compensation For 5-Axis Machine Tools, Jennifer Ruth Creamer

Doctoral Dissertations

"This work presents a geometric error compensation method for large 5-axis machine tools. The compensation method presented here uses tool tip measurements recorded throughout the axis space to construct a position-dependent geometric error model that can easily be used for error compensation. The measurements are taken using a laser tracker, permitting rapid error data gathering at most locations in the axis space. First two model types are compared for generating table-based error compensation and experimental results are presented. Table-based compensation is then extended to machine tool controller types with restrictions on the number or combination of compensation tables using an …

"Cyber-physical critical infrastructures are created when traditional physical infrastructure is supplemented with advanced monitoring, control, computing, and communication capability. More intelligent decision support and improved efficacy, dependability, and security are expected. Quantitative models and evaluation methods are required for determining the extent to which a cyber-physical infrastructure improves on its physical predecessors. It is essential that these models reflect both cyber and physical aspects of operation and failure. In this dissertation, we propose quantitative models for dependability attributes, in particular, survivability, of cyber-physical systems. Any malfunction or security breach, whether cyber or physical, that causes the system operation to depart …

Mass Transfer Studies In Heavy Oil Recovery Using Solvents, Vijitha Mohan Jan 2017

Mass Transfer Studies In Heavy Oil Recovery Using Solvents, Vijitha Mohan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Heavy oil, sometimes called bitumen, is known for its high viscosity (above 100 cp) and low API gravity (below 22⁰). In most cases, viscosity reduction is needed for the final product. There is a considerable amount of heavy oil in Alberta, Canada and the world's largest heavy oil deposit is in Venezuela. Yet less than 1% of it can be recovered because of its high viscosity. For shallow reservoirs, it is possible to resort to open cast mining. For deeper reservoirs, steam is used at ~ 350 ⁰C which gets the oil viscosity reduced to 1cp, which can now be …

The Error Control Of Mixed-Form Fast Multipole Algorithm Based On The High-Order Multipole Rotation, Ling Ling Meng, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Tian Xia, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, the mixed-form fast multipole algorithm (MF-FMA) with feasible error controllability is implemented through high-order multipole rotation that can make the translation matrices very sparse. The saving of both storage and CPU time makes it attainable to increase the number of harmonics in the middle frequency regime, thus shifting up the transition region of MF-FMA. Consequently, the broadband accuracy of the MF-FMA can be improved significantly.

Low Frequency Behavior Of Cvd Graphene From Dc To 40 Ghz, Rong Wang, Salahuddin Raju, Mansun Chan, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic behaviour of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene at low frequencies is still a mystery. No conclusion is made from the experimental point of views. We systematically investigate the electromagnetic response of graphene at microwave frequencies, which are from direct current (DC) to 40 GHz. Both a coplanar transmission line embedded with different-sized graphene flakes of 48 x 48 and 48 x 240 μm2 and a microwave termination based on the graphene sheet of 6 x 6mm2 are manufactured through standard microfabrication procedures. We conclude that CVD graphene behaves as a frequency-independent surface resistance at the microwave frequencies, which is …

Ultrathin Complementary Metasurface For Orbital Angular Momentum Generation At Microwave Frequencies, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic (EM) waves with helical wave front carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), which is associated with the azimuthal phase of the complex electric field. OAM is a new degree of freedom in EM waves and is promising for channel multiplexing in the communication system. Although the OAM-carrying EM wave attracts more and more attention, the method of OAM generation at microwave frequencies still faces challenges, such as efficiency and simulation time. In this communication, by using the circuit theory and equivalence principle, we build two simplified models, one for a single scatter and one for the whole metasurface to predict …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Volterra series (VS) representation is a powerful mathematical model for nonlinear circuits. However, the difficulties in determining higher order Volterra kernels limited its broader applications. In this paper, a systematic approach that enables a convenient extraction of Volterra kernels from X-parameters is presented. A concise and general representation of the output response due to arbitrary number of input tones is given. The relationship between Volterra kernels and X-parameters is explicitly formulated. An efficient frequency sweep scheme and an output frequency indexing scheme are provided. The least square linear regression method is employed to separate different orders of Volterra kernels at …
