Machine Learning Based Mom (Ml-Mom) For Parasitic Capacitance Extractions, He Ming Yao, Yu Wei Qin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper is a rethinking of the conventional method of moments (MoM) using the modern machine learning (ML) technology. By repositioning the MoM matrix and unknowns in an artificial neural network (ANN), the conventional linear algebra MoM solving is changed into a machine learning training process. The trained result is the solution. As an application, the parasitic capacitance extraction broadly needed by VLSI modeling is solved through the proposed new machine learning based method of moments (ML-MoM). The multiple linear regression (MLR) is employed to train the model. The computations are done on Amazon Web Service (AWS). Benchmarks demonstrated the …

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli Apr 2017

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the stationary acceleration of the spherical general helix in a 3-dimensional Lie group is studied by using a bi-invariant metric. The relationship between the Frenet elements of the stationary acceleration curve in 4-dimensional Euclidean space and the intrinsic Frenet elements of the Lie group is outlined. As a consequence, the corresponding curvature and torsion of these curves are computed. In Minkowski space, for the curves on a timelike surface to have a stationary acceleration, a necessary and sufficient condition is refined.

Itô'S Formula, The Stochastic Exponential, And Change Of Measure On General Time Scales, Wenqing Hu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We provide an Itô formula for stochastic dynamical equation on general time scales. Based on this Itô's formula we give a closed-form expression for stochastic exponential on general time scales. We then demonstrate Girsanov's change of measure formula in the case of general time scales. Our result is being applied to a Brownian motion on the quantum time scale (𝑞-time scale).

Numerical Simulations Of Intrusive Gravity Currents Interacting With A Bottom-Mounted Obstacle In A Continuously Stratified Ambient, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy Apr 2017

Numerical Simulations Of Intrusive Gravity Currents Interacting With A Bottom-Mounted Obstacle In A Continuously Stratified Ambient, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, the flow dynamics of intrusive gravity currents past a bottom-mounted obstacle were investigated using highly resolved numerical simulations. The propagation dynamics of a classic intrusive gravity current was first simulated in order to validate the numerical model with previous laboratory experiments. A bottom-mounted obstacle with a varying non-dimensional height of D~ = D/ H, where D is the obstacle height and H is the total flow depth, was then added to the problem in order to study the downstream flow pattern of the intrusive gravity current. For short obstacles, the intrusion re-established itself downstream without much distortion. …

First Search For Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars With Advanced Ligo, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the result of searches for gravitational waves from 200 pulsars using data from the first observing run of the Advanced LIGO detectors. We find no significant evidence for a gravitational-wave signal from any of these pulsars, but we are able to set the most constraining upper limits yet on their gravitational-wave amplitudes and ellipticities. For eight of these pulsars, our upper limits give bounds that are improvements over the indirect spin-down limit values. For another 32, we are within a factor of 10 of the spin-down limit, and it is likely that some of these will be reachable …

The effect of circular notch has been evaluated for three different architectures of three-dimensional (3D) carbon fiber woven composites (orthogonal, ORT; layer-to-layer, LTL; angle interlock, AI) through open-hole quasi-static tension and double-lap bearing strength tests in the off-axis (45°) direction. Damage characterization is monitored using Digital Image correlation (DIC) for open-hole testing and X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) for double-lap bearing strength test. The off-axis notched 3D woven composites exhibit minor reduction (less than 10 %) of the notched strength compared to the un-notched strength. DIC strain contour clearly show stress/strain localization regions around the hole periphery and stress/strain redistribution away …

Linear Precoding For Fading Cognitive Multiple-Access Wiretap Channel With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Juening Jin, Chengshan Xiao, Meixia Tao, Wen Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the fading cognitive multiple-access wiretap channel (CMAC-WT), in which two secondary-user transmitters (STs) send secure messages to a secondary-user receiver (SR) in the presence of an eavesdropper and subject to interference threshold constraints at multiple primary-user receivers (PRs). We design linear precoders to maximize the average secrecy sum rate for a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) fading CMAC-WT under finite-alphabet inputs and statistical channel state information at STs. For this nondeterministic polynomial-time NP-hard problem, we utilize an accurate approximation of the average secrecy sum rate to reduce the computational complexity and then present a two-layer algorithm by embedding the convex-concave procedure …

Ballistic Limit Equations For Non-Aluminum Projectiles Impacting Dual-Wall Spacecraft Systems, William P. Schonberg, J. Martin Ratliff Apr 2017

Ballistic Limit Equations For Non-Aluminum Projectiles Impacting Dual-Wall Spacecraft Systems, William P. Schonberg, J. Martin Ratliff

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the primary design considerations of earth-orbiting spacecraft is the mitigation of the damage that might occur from an on-orbit MMOD impact. Traditional damage-resistant design consists of a 'bumper' that is placed a small distance away from a spacecraft component or from the wall of the element in which it is housed. The performance of such a multi-wall structural element is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation (BLE), which defines the threshold particle size that results in a failure of the spacecraft element. BLEs are also key components of any micro-meteoroid/orbital debris (MMOD) risk assessment calculations. However, these …

Search For Continuous Gravitational Waves From Neutron Stars In Globular Cluster Ngc 6544, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe a directed search for continuous gravitational waves in data from the sixth initial LIGO science run. The target was the nearby globular cluster NGC 6544 at a distance of ≈2.7 kpc. The search covered a broad band of frequencies along with first and second frequency derivatives for a fixed sky position. The search coherently integrated data from the two LIGO interferometers over a time span of 9.2 days using the matched-filtering F-statistic. We found no gravitational-wave signals and set 95% confidence upper limits as stringent as 6.0 x 10-25 on intrinsic strain and 8.5 x 10 …

Long-Range Tails In Van Der Waals Interactions Of Excited-State And Ground-State Atoms, Ulrich D. Jentschura, V. Debierre Apr 2017

Long-Range Tails In Van Der Waals Interactions Of Excited-State And Ground-State Atoms, Ulrich D. Jentschura, V. Debierre

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A quantum electrodynamic calculation of the interaction of an excited-state atom with a ground-state atom is performed. For an excited reference state and a lower-lying virtual state, the contribution to the interaction energy naturally splits into a pole term and a Wick-rotated term. The pole term is shown to dominate in the long-range limit, altering the functional form of the interaction from the retarded 1/R7 Casimir-Polder form to a long-range tail - provided by the Wick-rotated term - proportional to cos[2(Em - En)R/(ħc)]/R2, where Em < En is the energy of a virtual state, …

Inelastic Rate Coefficients For Collisions Of C₆Hˉ With H₂ And He, Kyle M. Walker, François Lique, Fabien Dumouchel, Richard Dawes Apr 2017

Inelastic Rate Coefficients For Collisions Of C₆Hˉ With H₂ And He, Kyle M. Walker, François Lique, Fabien Dumouchel, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recent detection of anions in the interstellar medium has shown that they exist in a variety of astrophysical environments -- circumstellar envelopes, cold dense molecular clouds and star-forming regions. Both radiative and collisional processes contribute to molecular excitation and de-excitation in these regions so that the ‘local thermodynamic equilibrium’ approximation, where collisions cause the gas to behave thermally, is not generally valid. Therefore, along with radiative coefficients, collisional excitation rate coefficients are needed to accurately model the anionic emission from these environments. We focus on the calculation of state-to-state rate coefficients of the C6H- molecule in …

Chinese Origin Of The Term Pagoda: Liang Sicheng's Proposed Etymology, David Robbins Tien, Gerald Leonard Cohen Apr 2017

Chinese Origin Of The Term Pagoda: Liang Sicheng's Proposed Etymology, David Robbins Tien, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Western reference works regard the architectural term pagoda as being of uncertain origin, but an overlooked etymology proposed by Liang Sicheng convincingly solves the mystery: The word is Chinese, with the literal meaning “eight” (pa) “cornered” (ko) “tower” (La). Liang Sicheng, who pioneered the serious study of classical Chinese architecture, pointed out:

‘The octagonal pagoda, which first appeared in the Tomb Pagoda of Ching-tsang in 746, was the first “pa-go-da” in the real sense of the term.’

This 746 date is of course centuries before the first appearance of pagoda in a European language, viz. 1516 in Portuguese, so the …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present evidence of a geobattery associated with microbial degradation of a mature crude oil spill. Self-potential measurements were collected using a vertical array of nonpolarizing electrodes, starting at the land surface and passing through the smear zone where seasonal water table fluctuations have resulted in the coating of hydrocarbons on the aquifer solids. These passive electrical potential measurements exhibit a dipolar pattern associated with a current source. The anodic and cathodic reactions of this natural battery occur below and above the smear zone, respectively. The smear zone is characterized by high magnetic susceptibility values associated with the precipitation of …

Polysaccharide Fabrication Platforms And Biocompatibility Assessment As Candidate Wound Dressing Materials, Donald C. Aduba Jr., Hu Yang Mar 2017

Polysaccharide Fabrication Platforms And Biocompatibility Assessment As Candidate Wound Dressing Materials, Donald C. Aduba Jr., Hu Yang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wound dressings are critical for wound care because they provide a physical barrier between the injury site and outside environment, preventing further damage or infection. Wound dressings also manage and even encourage the wound healing process for proper recovery. Polysaccharide biopolymers are slowly becoming popular as modern wound dressings materials because they are naturally derived, highly abundant, inexpensive, absorbent, non-toxic and non-immunogenic. Polysaccharide biopolymers have also been processed into biomimetic platforms that offer a bioactive component in wound dressings that aid the healing process. This review primarily focuses on the fabrication and biocompatibility assessment of polysaccharide materials. Specifically, fabrication platforms …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, the potential of single crystalline 4H-polytype silicon carbide (4H-SiC) based microelectromechanical structures as resistance thermometer for high temperature sensing were explored. A dopant-selective photoelectrochemical etching process was applied to release the sensing element – suspended microstructures on 4H-SiC substrate. Residual stress and stress gradient in the microstructure before and after release was examined by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Electrical resistance of the suspended microstructures at different temperatures were characterized and analyzed by a temperature-dependent electron mobility model.

Does Plasticizer Penetrate Tightly Bound Polymer In Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate) On Silica?, Boonta Hetayothin, Roy A. Cabaniss, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

When only tightly bound poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was adsorbed on silica, the plasticizer, di(propylene glycol) dibenzoate (DPGDB), was not effective in lowering its glass transition. To determine why the plasticizer was not effective, we probed the behavior of the deuterated plasticizer di (propylene glycol) dibenzoate (DPGDB-d10)/PVAc/silica system using deuterium (2H) solid state NMR and temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). PVAc with 37% (w/w) of plasticizer/polymer was adsorbed on silica in adsorbed amounts of 2.60 and 0.76 mg PVAc/m2 silica. The dynamics of the plasticizer in the adsorbed PVAc was found to be more motionally heterogeneous than that observed in …

The present disclosure provides a series of new and improved porous polyamide aerogels derived from multifunctional aromatics that combine the high mechanical strength of aramids with the pore structure of aerogels. The polyamide aerogels have a hyperbranched structure, relatively low density, high porosity and may be derived from functionalized monomers having more aromatic groups than functional groups. The present disclosure also provides a new method for producing the porous polyamide aerogels by polymerizing an aromatic multifunctional carboxylic acid or a ferrocene multifunctional carboxylic acid with a polyfunctional aromatic isocyanate at moderate reaction conditions followed by drying with liquid CO2. Also …
