A method of manufacturing a tire is provided that includes curing the tire (10) in a curing press (12) and applying microwave energy at a given frequency band into the tire. The interaction between the microwave energy and the tire is monitored to obtain a complex reflection coefficient. A root-mean-squared error is calculated using the measured complex reflection coefficient and a reference reflection coefficient. The reference reflection coefficient is from a fully cured tire made from the same material as the tire. Continuous monitoring of the interaction takes place to obtain the complex reflection coefficient along …

Scaling arguments are presented to quantify the widely used diapycnal (irreversible) mixing coefficient Γ = ∈PE/∈ in stratified flows as a function of the turbulent Froude number Fr = ∈/Nk. Here, N is the buoyancy frequency, k is the turbulent kinetic energy, ∈ is the rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy and ∈PE is the rate of dissipation of turbulent potential energy. We show that for Fr≫1, Γ ∝ Fr-2, for Fr∼ O (1), Γ ∝ Fr-1 and for Fr ≪ 1, Γ ∝ Fr0. These scaling results are tested using high-resolution direct numerical …

InSb thin films were grown on GaAs substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and investigated by temperature-dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry (TD-SE). The refractive index, extinction coefficient, and dielectric function of the InSb films were extracted. The variation of critical point energies (E 1 , E 1 +Δ 1 , E 2 , E1') related to the excited state transitions of InSb and the second energy derivatives of the dielectric function at different temperatures showed that the InSb thin film had high electrical and optical stability at the evaluated temperatures. TD-SE analysis revealed a temperature range suitable for the use …

Advanced Removal Of 4-Nitrophenol By Emerging And Intensifying Technology Of Emulsion Liquid Membrane With Magnetic Nanoparticles, Qusay Al-Obaidi, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
4-nitrophenol is one of the phenolic compounds found in industrial wastes that needs to be removed from treated wastewater. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) has been introduced as a developing technology for advanced wastewater and water treatment. This emerging technology of treatment can be intensified by strategically adding nanoparticles to organic membrane phase (O). To facilitate the industrial implementation of ELM with nanoparticles, we used magnetic iron nanoparticles added to the organic phase (O) in order to recover them by a magnet for reuse. This also assists in de-emulsification step. The results show that with the use of 1% (W/W) of …

We Monitor The Correlated Quench Induced Dynamical Dressing Of A Spinor Impurity Repulsively Interacting With A Bose-Einstein Condensate. Inspecting The Temporal Evolution Of The Structure Factor, Three Distinct Dynamical Regions Arise Upon Increasing The Interspecies Interaction. These Regions Are Found To Be Related To The Segregated Nature Of The Impurity And To The Ohmic Character Of The Bath. It Is Shown That The Impurity Dynamics Can Be Described By An Effective Potential That Deforms From A Harmonic To A Double-Well One When Crossing The Miscibility-Immiscibility Threshold. In Particular, For Miscible Components The Polaron Formation Is Imprinted On The Spectral Response …

We Unravel The Dynamical Stability Of A Fully Polarized One-Dimensional Ultracold Few-Fermion Spin-1/2 Gas Subjected To Inhomogeneous Driving Of The Itinerant Spins. Despite The Unstable Character Of The Total Spin-Polarization The Existence Of An Interaction Regime Is Demonstrated Where The Spin-Correlations Lead To Almost Maximally Aligned Spins Throughout The Dynamics. The Resulting Ferromagnetic Order Emerges From The Build Up Of Superpositions Of States Of Maximal Total Spin. They Comprise A Decaying Spin-Polarization And A Dynamical Evolution Towards An Almost Completely Unpolarized NOON-Like State. Via Single-Shot Simulations We Demonstrate That Our Theoretical Predictions Can Be Detected In State-Of-The-Art Ultracold Experiments.

Sensors arranged on a chair on which a subject is seated detect a physical characteristic of the subject during administration of a cognitive health assessment. An assessment processor coupled to the sensors executes computer-executable instructions causing the processor to determine a contemporaneous reaction corresponding to each of the questions as a function of the detected physical characteristic. And the subject is assigned a cognitive health assessment score based on the subject's answers and determined reactions.

Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations were used to calculate the positron stopping profiles in tungsten positron moderator foils. Stopping profiles were numerically integrated with efficiency kernels derived from Green's function solutions of the 3D diffusion equation to determine the moderation efficiency in both the backscattering and transmission geometries. Stopping profiles and efficiencies were calculated for positron energies from 10 keV to 10 MeV and incident angles from 0° to 75°. The resulting efficiencies agreed with other calculated and measured values in the literature, especially when similar values of the positron diffusion length and surface emission branching ratio were used. Large …
Learning Temporal Information From A Single Image For Au Detection, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin
Learning Temporal Information From A Single Image For Au Detection, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Automatic Facial Action Units (AUs) detection is the recognition of the facial appearance changes caused by the contraction or relaxation of one or more related facial muscles. Compared to the sequence-based methods, a decreased performance is observed for the static image-based AU detection, due to the loss of temporal information. To solve this problem, we propose a novel method that implicitly learns temporal information from a single image for AU detection by adding a hidden optical-flow layer to concatenate two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) models: optical-flow net (OF-Net) and AU detection net (AU-Net). The OF-Net is designed to estimate the …

Vision Sensor Based Action Recognition For Improving Efficiency And Quality Under The Environment Of Industry 4.0, Zipeng Wang, Ruwen Qin, Jihong Yan, Chaozhong Guo
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the environment of industry 4.0, human beings are still an important influencing factor of efficiency and quality which are the core of product life cycle management. Hence, monitoring and analyzing humans' actions are essential. This paper proposes a vision sensor based method to evaluate the accuracy of operators' actions. Each action of operators is recognized in real time by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based classification model in which hierarchical clustering is introduced to minimize the effects of action uncertainty. Warnings are triggered when incorrect actions occur in real time and applications of action analysis of workers on a …

As life-span extenders, bulk gels have been widely applied to rejuvenate oil production from uneconomic producers in mature oil fields by improving the sweep efficiency of improved-oil-recovery (IOR)/enhanced-oil-recovery (EOR) floods. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the responses of injection-well gel treatments implemented between 1985 and 2014. The survey includes 61 field projects compiled from SPE papers and US Department of Energy reports. Seven parameters related to the oil-production response were evaluated according to the reservoir lithology, formation type, and recovery process, using univariate analysis and stacked histograms. The interquartile-range (IQR) method was used to detect the underperforming and …

A series of ten compositions from 5 to 30 mol% Ge and 5 to 15 mol% Ga were examined within the ternary, showing broadband infrared properties with transmission from 1 to 25 μm. Topological constraint theory applied to compositions examined exhibited sharp inflection at the average coordination number of = 2.67 defined as the chemical threshold where the glass network consists of tetrahedral Ge(Ga)Se2 …
Investigation Of Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Palladium Nanoparticles Supported On Fe3o4 As Efficient Recyclable Magnetic Catalysts For Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling, Hany A. Elazab
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this research, a facile and reproducible approach was implemented for the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles supported on Fe3O4 with remarkable activity as an ideal catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. Magnetite supported Pd nanoparticles reveal high activity in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions since they could be recycled up to seven times with the same high catalytic activity. This adopted method of catalyst synthesis has many advantages, including reproducibility and the reliability of the adopted synthetic method. The produced catalyst has unique magnetic properties to facilitate catalyst recovery from the reaction mixture by using a strong magnet as an external …

It has been ten years since Matthew Little sent me his suggestion that ‘kibosh’ in ‘put the kibosh on’ derives from the fearsome Mideastern whip known as the kurbash; Stephen Goranson soon thereafter independently made the same suggestion in messages to the American Dialect Society, gradually adding the important initial discoveries to buttress that proposal.
The three of us wound up collaborating on ‘kibosh,’ first in Comments on Etymology and then in our 2017 book Origin of Kibosh. Updates continued to appear in COE as various scholars weighed in and some new material appeared. It is time now to …

We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational-wave transients in the data from the Advanced LIGO second observation run; we search for gravitational-wave transients of 2-500 s duration in the 24-2048 Hz frequency band with minimal assumptions about signal properties such as waveform morphologies, polarization, sky location or time of occurrence. Signal families covered by these search algorithms include fallback accretion onto neutron stars, broadband chirps from innermost stable circular orbit waves around rotating black holes, eccentric inspiral-merger-ringdown compact binary coalescence waveforms, and other models. The second observation run totals about 118.3 days of coincident data between November …

The recent discovery by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo of a gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral has enabled tests of general relativity (GR) with this new type of source. This source, for the first time, permits tests of strong-field dynamics of compact binaries in the presence of matter. In this Letter, we place constraints on the dipole radiation and possible deviations from GR in the post-Newtonian coefficients that govern the inspiral regime. Bounds on modified dispersion of gravitational waves are obtained; in combination with information from the observed electromagnetic counterpart we can also constrain effects due …

Triple Differential Cross Sections For Electron-Impact Ionization Of Methane At Intermediate Energy, Esam Ali, Carlos Granados, Ahmad Sakaamini, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of electron-impact single ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbital 1t2 and the next highest occupied molecular orbital 2a1 states of CH4 at an incident electron energy of 250 eV. Triple differential cross sections measured in two different laboratories were compared with results calculated within the molecular 3-body distorted wave and generalized Sturmian function theoretical models. For ionization of the 1t2 state, the binary peak was observed to have a single maximum near the momentum transfer direction that evolved into a double peak for increasing projectile scattering angles, as …

Fast Yield Estimation Of Multi-Band Patch Antennas By Pc-Kriging, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Slawomir Koziel
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The PC-Kriging metamodeling method is proposed for yield estimation of multi-band patch antennas. PC-Kriging is a combination of polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) and Kriging metamodeling, where PCE is used as a trend function for the Kriging interpolation metamodel. The method is demonstrated on the Ishigami analytical function and a dual-band patch antenna. The PC-Kriging is shown to reach the prescribed accuracy limit with significantly fewer training points than both PCE and Kriging. This translates into considerable computational savings of yield estimation over alternative metamodel-based procedures and direct EM-driven Monte Carlo simulation. The saving are obtained without compromising evaluation reliability.
Transverse Localization Of Transmission Eigenchannels, Hasan Yılmaz, Chia Wei Hsu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Transverse Localization Of Transmission Eigenchannels, Hasan Yılmaz, Chia Wei Hsu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Transmission eigenchannels are building blocks of coherent wave transport in diffusive media, and selective excitation of individual eigenchannels can lead to diverse transport behaviour. An essential yet poorly understood property is the transverse spatial profile of each eigenchannel, which is relevant for the associated energy density and critical for coupling light into and out of it. Here, we discover that the transmission eigenchannels of a disordered slab possess exponentially localized incident and outgoing profiles, even in the diffusive regime far from Anderson localization. Such transverse localization arises from a combination of reciprocity, local coupling of spatial modes and non-local correlations …

On The Anisotropic Behavior Of Electrodes For Electrical-Based Monitoring Of Cfrp Laminated Composites, Khaled Almuhammadi, Arief Yudhanto, Gilles Lubineau
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising structural health monitoring technique for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. EIT technique has been specifically adopted as a non-destructive testing method along with the electrical characterization methods. Electrodes are the primary component in any EIT system because they act as an interface connecting the instrument/hardware to the structure under inspection. Simulation of electrical inspection of CFRP usually assumes the electrodes to be electrically isotropic interfaces. We show here that such isotropic assumption is a very poor approximation. We experimentally investigated the electrodes contact impedance behavior on CFRP-laminated composite specimens for different surface processing …

Internal Strain Assessment Using Fbgs In A Thermoplastic Composite Subjected To Quasi-Static Indentation And Low-Velocity Impact, M. Mulle, A. Yudhanto, G. Lubineau, R. Yaldiz, W. Schijve, N. Verghese
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present, for the first time, an experimental investigation of internal strain monitoring in thermoplastic composites subjected to quasi-static indentation and low-velocity impact using embedded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The goal is to highlight the interest and limitations of the in-core instrumentation of glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene laminates subjected to these two classical loading conditions. We propose an instrumentation strategy utilizing FBGs that is expected to provide a reliable set of internal strain values and strain rates, which can be used for the analysis of the damage behavior and the validation of a numerical mesoscale model of laminates. Based on a …

The Decoupling Methods For Increasing The Isolation Between Two Antennas, Min Li, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presented the parasitic structure decoupling method and other related approaches to increase the isolation between two closely coupled antennas. The design parameters of the resultant decoupling structures based on the proposed methods can be precisely derived instead of fitted to achieve high antenna isolations. A two-element monopole array is employed as a benchmark to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. The simulation results show that good impedance matching and high port isolation could be achieved simultaneously based on the proposed methods.

Mechanical Properties Of Heusler Alloys, Wesley Everhart, Joseph William Newkirk
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Heusler alloys have been a significant topic of research due to their unique electronic structure, which exhibits half-metallicity, and a wide variety of properties such as magneto-calorics, thermoelectrics, and magnetic shape memory effects. As the maturity of these materials grows and commercial applications become more near-term, the mechanical properties of these materials become an important factor to both their processing as well as their final use. Very few studies have experimentally investigated mechanical properties, but those that exist are reviewed within the context of their magnetic performance and application space with specific focus on elastic properties, hardness and strength, and …
