To characterize crustal anisotropy beneath the central North China Craton (CNCC), we apply a recently developed deconvolution approach to effectively remove near-surface reverberations in the receiver functions recorded at 200 broadband seismic stations and subsequently determine the fast orientation and the magnitude of crustal azimuthal anisotropy by fitting the sinusoidal moveout of the P to S converted phases from the Moho and intracrustal discontinuities. The magnitude of crustal anisotropy is found to range from 0.06 s to 0.54Â s, with an average of 0.25 ± 0.08Â s. Fault-parallel anisotropy in the seismically active Zhangjiakou-Penglai Fault Zone is significant and could …

N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) is a new antioxidant molecule with powerful radical scavenging properties. The aim of this study was to investigate neuroprotective effects of NACA against paraquat (PQ) toxicity in the midbrains of rats by using motor coordination tests and biochemical and histological analysis. Thirty adult Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: Group 1: control (n = 10), Group 2: PQ (10 mg/kg) (n = 10), and Group 3: PQ (10 mg/kg) + NACA (100 mg/kg) (n = 10). NACA was administrated intraperitoneally 30 min before PQ injection. Performance was measured for a period of 28 days. The …

The field distribution of a power/ground plane can be fully characterized by TMzmn modes, where the electric fields have both azimuthal and longitudinal components and the magnetic fields have only the azimuthal component. Thus, if the magnetic fields are defined to be the unknowns in the finite element method (FEM) used for the analysis of the power/ground plane structure, the analysis becomes a quasi-two dimensional (Q-2D) problem. Since the high-order modes are evanescent, they are tightly confined to the near region of the vias guarded by anti-pads; while in the regions sufficiently far from the anti-pads, only the fundamental mode …

Ferroelectric (FE) films are widely used in electronic devices and low-power FE transducers. There is significant interest in expanding the usage of FE films to ultrahigh-power systems. The results are reported herein on experimental investigations of stress-induced depolarization of single-layer PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 doped 2% Nb (PZT 95/5) poled FE films subjected to uniaxial adiabatic compression perpendicular and antiparallel to the direction of polarization. It was found that at a stress of 2.4 GPa, the 32-μm-thick films underwent a pressure induced transition to a nonpolar antiferroelectric phase and became completely depolarized in both modes of high strain …

In order to minimize unintentional detonation, munitions researchers have focused on the development of chemical compounds that are insensitive to external stimuli while maintaining their effectiveness. Although these compounds, known as high-performance insensitive munition compounds, are promising in terms of potency and stability, their environmental impacts have either not been fully understood or are yet to be investigated. In the present research, we have performed a quantum chemical investigation on electronic structures and properties of an insensitive munition compound 4,6-bis(nitroimino)-1,3,5-triazinan-2-one (DNAM). The density functional theory using the B3LYP and M06-2X functionals and MP2 methodology were used for geometry optimization of …

Macrophages are immune cells involved in wound healing and tissue regeneration; however, the sustained presence of proinflammatory macrophages in wound sites impairs healing. In this study, we shifted peritoneal macrophage polarization away from a proinflammatory (M1) phenotype through exposure to stabilized interleukin-4 (IL-4) in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) films in combination with topographical guidance from electro spun poly-l-lactic acid fibers. To our knowledge, this was the first study to stabilize IL-4 with bovine serum albumin (BSA) within a biomaterial. When IL-4 was coloaded with BSA for stabilization, we saw increased IL-4 bioactivity compared to no added stabilization, trehalose stabilization, or murine …

We Explore Repulsive Fermi Polarons In One-Dimensional Harmonically Trapped Few-Body Mixtures Of Ultracold Atoms Using As A Case Example A 6Li-40K Mixture. A Characterization Of These Quasiparticle-Like States, Whose Appearance Is Signaled In The Impurity's Radiofrequency Spectrum, Is Achieved By Extracting Their Lifetime And Residua. Increasing The Number Of 40K Impurities Leads To The Occurrence Of Both Single And Multiple Polarons That Are Entangled With Their Environment. An Interaction-Dependent Broadening Of The Spectral Lines Is Observed Suggesting The Presence Of Induced Interactions. We Propose The Relative Distance Between The Impurities As An Adequate Measure To Detect Induced Interactions Independently Of …

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The objective of this project is to review the existing provisions of the AISI S100-16 North American Specification for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, for screw connections loaded in shear and tension (but not combined actions). A recent study by the Steel Deck Institute (Sputo 2017) revealed possible unconservative results for screw pull-over, particularly in thinner sheets and/or lower ductility.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of available steel-to-steel screw connection strength test data, totaling 702 shear tests, 143 pull-over tests, and 335 pull-out tests. The tested strength of these connections was compared to the predicted strength from the existing …

A Web Application For The Remote Control Of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Riccardo Musmeci, Ken Goss, Simone Silvestri, Giuseppe Lo Re
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are receiving an increasing attention from the research and industry community, and today they are adopted for several civilian and military applications. However, state of the art technologies is still based on a single UAV either directly controlled by the human operator or supervised through the manual definition of a flight plan. As a result, scalability is still a significant limitation for such systems, especially when large areas need to be monitored. In this paper we propose a web-based application for the control of multiple UAVs. The application has three layers. The first layer allows the …

Enantioselective Copper Catalyzed Alkyne-Azide Cycloaddition By Dynamic Kinetic Resolution, En Chih Liu, Joseph J. Topczewski
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The copper(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC), a click reaction, is one of the most powerful catalytic reactions developed during the last two decades. Conducting CuAAC enantioselectively would add a third dimension to this reaction and would enable the direct synthesis of α-chiral triazoles. Doing so is demanding because the two precursors have linear geometries, and the triazole product is a flat heterocycle. Designing a chiral catalyst is further complicated by the complex mechanism of CuAAC. We report an enantioselective CuAAC (E-CuAAC), enabled by dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR). The E-CuAAC is high yielding and affords up to 99:1 er. The E-CuAAC …

As a Widely Used Segmentation Scheme, Markov Random Field (Mrf) Utilizes K-Means Clustering to Calculate the Initial Model for Sidescan Sonar Image Segmentation. However, for the Noise and Intensity Inhomogeneity Nature of the Sidescan Sonar Images, the Segmentation Results of K-Means Clustering Have Low Accuracy, Motivating Us to Use Machine Learning Methods to Initialize Mrf. Meanwhile, an Extreme Learning Machine (Elm), a Supervised Learning Algorithm Derived from the Single-Hidden-Layer Feedforward Neural Networks, Learns Faster Than Randomly Generated Hidden-Layer Parameters and is Superior to a Support Vector Machine (Svm). Deep Learning (DL) models have proven to be very effective in solving many challenging problems, especially, those related to computer vision, text, and speech. However, the design of such models is challenging because of the vast search space and computational complexity that needs to be explored. Our goal in this paper is to reduce the human effort required to design architectures by using a system architecture development process that allows the exploration of large design space by automating certain model construction, alternative generation, and assessment. The proposed framework is generic and targeted at all deep learning architectures that can be …

Advanced LIGO's second observing run (O2), conducted from 2016 November 30 to 2017 August 25, combined with Advanced Virgo's first observations in 2017 August, witnessed the birth of gravitational-wave multimessenger astronomy. The first ever gravitational-wave detection from the coalescence of two neutron stars, GW170817, and its gamma-ray counterpart, GRB 170817A, led to an electromagnetic follow-up of the event at an unprecedented scale. Several teams from across the world searched for EM/neutrino counterparts to GW170817, paving the way for the discovery of optical, X-ray, and radio counterparts. In this article, we describe the online identification of gravitational-wave transients and the distribution …
Manipulating Transverse Photovoltage Across Plasmonic Triangle Holes Of Symmetry Breaking, Marjan Akbari, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang
Manipulating Transverse Photovoltage Across Plasmonic Triangle Holes Of Symmetry Breaking, Marjan Akbari, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The transverse photo-induced voltages generated by the photon drag effect under normally and obliquely incident circularly polarized light across the plasmonic symmetry-breaking isosceles-triangle holes and right-triangle holes have been characterized. It is observed that the sign of transverse photovoltage flips when the incident circular polarization is switched for both types of plasmonic triangle holes. However, the unbalanced photovoltage between two circular polarizations is achieved across the plasmonic right-triangle holes, compared to the balanced photovoltage in the plasmonic isosceles-triangle holes. Such manipulation of the sign and the amplitude of transverse photovoltage is enabled by the broken symmetries of the electric and …

Concrete pumping is the most used technique to transfer concrete from the mixer truck to the formwork. Numerous studies have been performed on the flow behavior of concrete in pipes, as well as the consequences of pumping on fluid and hardened concrete properties. One of the negative consequences of pumping concrete is a decrease in freeze-thaw resistance. This is caused by a decrease in air content and an increase in air bubble size, due to dissolution and reappearance of air and air bubble coalescence under pressure. This paper investigates the capability of rheology to understand air dissolution and reappearance in …

In this letter, we develop a prism-based discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm with simplified periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) to analyze infinite doubly periodic frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Most FSS structures contain patterned planar conductive layers and supporting dielectric layers. These layers are very thin compared to the wavelength. Therefore, general tetrahedral discretization of space will unnecessarily increase the number of mesh elements, as well as the number of unknowns. Instead, we propose using prismatic elements, which are more optimal for planar structures, resulting in less unknowns, less memory usage, and higher efficiency. The accuracy of the proposed prism based DGTD …
Optical Transportation And Accumulation Of Microparticles By Self-Accelerating Cusp Beams, Weiwei Liu, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Optical Transportation And Accumulation Of Microparticles By Self-Accelerating Cusp Beams, Weiwei Liu, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most of the self-accelerating beams have monotonous single-channel bending structures, which greatly limit their applications in many fields such as microscopic imaging and particle manipulation. In this paper, the self-accelerating cusp beams with variable numbers of multichannel bending structures are generated to demonstrate the optical transportation and accumulation of micrometer polystyrene particles. The transportation velocity and optical force profiles of the microparticles moving along the bending channels of cusp beams are analyzed. Parallel particle transportation and particle accumulation manipulation from all the bending channels are further demonstrated. These results will inspire a lot of promising applications for self-accelerating beams especially …

Corporate Social Responsibility: Understanding The Mining Stakeholder With A Case Study, Sisi Que, Liang Wang, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Wei Yang, Hui Jiang
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The social responsibility of corporate mining has been challenged by a significant socio-political risk from local communities. These issues reduce shareholder value by increasing costs and decreasing the market perception of corporate social responsibility. Community engagement is the process of understanding the behavior and interests of a group of targeted mining communities through surveys and data analysis, with the purpose of incorporating mining community acceptance into the mining sustainability. While mining organizations have discussed community engagement to varying degrees, there are three main shortcomings in current studies, as concluded in the authors' previous research. This paper presents a framework to …

A Comparison Of Static And Dynamic Functional Connectivities For Identifying Subjects And Biological Sex Using Intrinsic Individual Brain Connectivity, Sreevalsan S. Menon, K. Krishnamurthy
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Functional magnetic resonance imaging has revealed correlated activities in brain regions even in the absence of a task. Initial studies assumed this resting-state functional connectivity (FC) to be stationary in nature, but recent studies have modeled these activities as a dynamic network. Dynamic spatiotemporal models better model the brain activities, but are computationally more involved. A comparison of static and dynamic FCs was made to quantitatively study their efficacies in identifying intrinsic individual connectivity patterns using data from the Human Connectome project. Results show that the intrinsic individual brain connectivity pattern can be used as a ‘fingerprint’ to distinguish among …
