Operation of ferrimagnetic frequency-selective limiters (FSL) is based on non-linear absorption in magnetized ferrite films at RF/microwave power levels exceeding some threshold. A new phenomenological model of non-linear loss in a ferrite medium has been proposed, and it has been implemented in an efficient numerical algorithm for an FSL performance prediction.

Topological photonic systems have been explored extensively due to the robust electromagnetic states they support. In this work, we propose a finite-difference supercell approach to analyze the topological property of photonic crystal (PC) structures. Meanwhile, the pseudospin polarized edge states at the interface of two PC structures with different topologies are studied. The direction of the energy flow is found to be determined by the helicity of the pseudospin polarization.

Single Point Incremental Sheet Forming (SPIF) is a versatile forming process that has gained significant traction over the past few decades. Its increased formability, quick part adaption, and reduced set-up costs make it an economical choice for small batch and rapid prototype forming applications when compared to traditional stamping processes. However, a common problem with the SPIF process is its tendency to produce high geometric error due to the lack of supporting dies and molds. While geometric error has been a primary focus of recent research, it is still significantly larger for SPIF than traditional forming processes. In this paper, …

We describe the concept of a dielectrophoretic nanoparticle injector and its use in a plasmonic/photonic-based nanoparticle manipulation system. Particle motion is achieved by generating an electrostatic, non-uniform field between two tilted plates and applying the corresponding dielectrophoretic force to net-neutral nanoparticles. We investigate the dependence the dielectrophoretic force has on the plate angle of the charged plates as well as their separation distance, dielectric filler material, and exit interface membrane. Our results indicate an increasing average and maximum dielectrophoretic force attainable in the axial direction with corresponding decreasing plate angle and gap distance. The model also predicts larger field variation …

Spattering has been a problem in metal processing involving high-power lasers, like laser welding, machining, and recently, additive manufacturing. Limited by the capabilities of in situ diagnostic techniques, typically imaging with visible light or laboratory x-ray sources, a comprehensive understanding of the laser-spattering phenomenon, particularly the extremely fast spatters, has not been achieved yet. Here, using MHz single-pulse synchrotron-x-ray imaging, we probe the spattering behavior of Ti-6Al-4V with micrometer spatial resolution and subnanosecond temporal resolution. Combining direct experimental observations, quantitative image analysis, as well as numerical simulations, our study unravels a novel mechanism of laser spattering: The bulk explosion of …

Metallic components can gain defects such as dents, cracks, wear, heat checks, deformation, etc., that need to be repaired before reinserting into service for extending the lifespan of these parts. In this study, a hybrid process was developed to integrate reverse engineering, pre-repair processing, additive manufacturing, and material testing for the purpose of part remanufacturing. Worn components with varied defects were scanned using a 3D scanner to recreate the three-dimensional models. Pre-repair processing methods which include pre-repair machining and heat-treatment were introduced. Strategies for pre-repair machining of defects including surface impact damage, surface superficial damage and cracking were presented. Pre-repair …

Generation Of Nondiffracting Vector Beams With Ring-Shaped Plasmonic Metasurfaces, Yuchao Zhang, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nondiffracting Bessel, Mathieu, and Weber vector beams are generated by using ring-shaped plasmonic geometric metasurfaces. The nondiffracting vector beam is produced by the superposition of two off-axis right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized nondiffracting scalar beams described by the Whittaker integral, which are simultaneously generated by a single metasurface with the ring-shaped phase profile. The polarization states of the generated nondiffracting vector beams are analyzed by the Stokes parameters and the orbital angular momentum states are measured by the beam interference. In addition, the selfhealing properties of nondiffracting vector beams are further demonstrated, showing that not only the beam profiles but …

Selective laser melting (SLM) is well suited for the efficient manufacturing of complex structures because of its manufacturing methodology. The optimized process parameters for each alloy has been a cause for debate in recent years. In this study, the hatch angle and build orientation were investigated. 304L stainless steel samples were manufactured using three hatch angles (0◦, 67◦, and 105◦) in three build orientations (x-, y-, and z-direction) and tested in compression. Analysis of variance and Tukey's test were used to evaluate the obtained results. Results showed that the measured compressive yield strength and plastic flow stress varied when the …

We have measured fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for ionization in 75-keVp+H2 collisions for ejected electron speeds close to the projectile speed. The data were analyzed in dependence on both the electron emission angle and the projectile scattering angle. Pronounced postcollisional effects between the projectile and the ejected electrons were observed. Significant differences between experiment and theory and between two conceptually very similar theoretical models were found. This shows that in the region of electron-projectile velocity-matching the FDCS is very sensitive to the details of the underlying few-body dynamics.

The impact of anharmonicity on the vibrational entropy and heat capacity of UO2 has been investigated from 10 to 1200 K using inelastic neutron-scattering measurements of the phonon density of states (PDOS). Small changes in the PDOS are observed from 10 to 295 K, with more noticeable changes appearing in the 750- and 1200-K data. The specific heat determined from the PDOS measurements is in agreement with macroscopic specific heat measurements, and the overall impact of nondilation anharmonicity on the specific heat has been shown to be less than 2%. An analysis of the phonon measurements shows that the softening …

Isolated spinning neutron stars, asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis, are expected to be sources of continuous gravitational waves. The most sensitive searches for these sources are based on accurate matched filtering techniques that assume the continuous wave to be phase locked with the pulsar beamed emission. While matched filtering maximizes the search sensitivity, a significant signal-to-noise ratio loss will happen in the case of a mismatch between the assumed and the true signal phase evolution. Narrow-band algorithms allow for a small mismatch in the frequency and spin-down values of the pulsar while coherently integrating the entire dataset. In …

The article examines the implicit components in the meaning of semantically modified derivatives. Using the methods of componential analysis of definitions from various Russian explanatory and aspectual dictionaries, the implicit components in the sound verbs' meanings are inventoried. The impact of the relevant implicit components on the synthesis process is examined; the dichotomy of the implicit components of meaning and corresponding synthesizing prefixes is identified. The productivity and typical colloquial usage of synthesized derivatives is demonstrated using data from the Russian National Corpus.

Novel And Efficient Parasitic Decoupling Network For Closely Coupled Antennas, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel and efficient parasitic decoupling network (PDN) is proposed for closely coupled antennas in this paper, which provides a new perspective and approach to design DNs based on the parasitic decoupling concept. The PDN is composed of sections of transmission lines (TLs) and reactive components, allowing additional power-traveling paths. With the TL lengths and reactive component reactance being precisely determined, the traveling power from one antenna to another could cancel out the undesired power wave induced by mutual coupling, resulting in the high port isolation. The decoupling theory is rigorously derived with the design procedure of the PDN systematically …

This paper proposes a new source reconstruction method (SRM) based on deep learning. The conventional SRM usually requires oversampled measurements data to ensure higher accuracy. Thus, conventional SRM numerical system is usually highly singular. A deep convolutional neural network (ConvNet) is proposed to reconstruct the equivalent sources of the target to overcome difficulty. The deep ConvNet allows us to employ less data samples. Besides, the ill-conditioned numerical system can be effectively avoided. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. Its performance is also compared with the traditional neural network and interpolation method. Moreover, …

Fault Detection And Estimation For A Class Of Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Jia Cai, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a new model-based fault detection and estimation framework for a class of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear distributed parameter systems (DPS) described by partial differential equations (PDE) with actuator and sensor faults. The fault functions cover both abrupt and incipient faults. A Luenberger type observer is used to monitor the health of the DPS as a detection observer on the basis of the nonlinear PDE representation of the system with measured output vector. By taking the difference between measured and estimated outputs from this observer, a residual signal is generated for fault detection. If the detection residual …

In this paper, Schottky junction solar cells fully based on Al0.3Ga0.7As with optical band gap energy of 1.8 eV are designed, fabricated, and characterized. In solar cells based on AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure, AlGaAs is mostly used as window or electron barrier layer, while GaAs is used as active photon absorbing layer. This work is among the first reports of AlGaAs based Schottky solar cells. AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is used for fabrication of photovoltaic devices. Photovoltaic properties of solar cells are reported, along with experimental details of device fabrication and characterization. The optimized bandgap energy of 1.8eV …

In this paper, the effect of external gate voltage on GaAs-based metal-semiconductor (MS) Schottky solar cells is investigated. Subsequent changes in photovoltaic characteristic properties of the solar cells are extracted, reported and explained. Under positive gate voltages, the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density measured at collector are significantly increased due to the drift of holes from gate junction to the collector (forward bias condition of gate junction). However, there is slight increase in open-circuit voltage under reverse gate voltages, where only thermally generated electrons drift toward the collector junction. Moreover, negative gate voltage on insulated gate contact has resulted …

We conduct a joint inversion of teleseismic receiver functions and Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion from both ambient noise and earthquakes using data from 79 seismic stations in southern Africa, which is home to some of the world's oldest cratons and orogenic belts. The area has experienced two of the largest igneous activities in the world (the Okavango dyke swarm and Bushveld mafic intrusion) and thus is an ideal locale for investigating continental formation and evolution. The resulting 3-D shear wave velocities for the depth range of 0—100Â km and crustal thickness measurements show a clear spatial correspondence with known …

Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is a freeform manufacturing method whereby a 3D geometry is created by progressively deforming a metal sheet with a single point tool following a defined trajectory. The thickness distribution of a formed part is a major consideration of the process and is believed to be improved by forming the geometry in multiple stages. This paper describes a series of experiments in which truncated cone geometries were formed using two multistage methods and compared to the same geometry formed using the traditional single stage method. The geometric accuracy and thickness distributions, including 3D thickness distribution plots, of …

The gut microbiota is extremely important for the health of the host across its lifespan. Recent studies have elucidated connections between the gut microbiota and neurological disease and disorders such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's disease (AD), autism, and a host of other brain illnesses. Dysbiosis of the normal gut flora can have negative consequences for humans, especially throughout key periods during our lifespan as the gut microbes change with age in both phenotype and number of bacterial species. Neurologic diseases, mental disorders, and euthymic states are influenced by alterations in the metabolites produced by gut microbial milieu. We introduce a …

In this work, we clarify the underlying physics and the acceptor ionization process in the In-Mg co-doping GaN. The fundamental understandings are also applicable for other co-doping nitride systems. We show the effective acceptors ionization stems mainly from the band structure tuning effect of the 4d orbitals of In atoms. In addition, temperature dependent defect-related photoluminescence analysis was proposed to examine the energy position of Mg impurity levels, which is crucially important in the design for high p-doping. Finally, a hole concentration, which is nearly one order of magnitude higher than what is typically achievable by direct Mg-doping, was achieved.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as the promising molecular biomarkers for early diagnosis and enhanced understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of cancers as well as certain diseases. Here, a facile, label-free, and amplification-free electrochemical biosensor was developed to detect miRNA by using DNA origami nanostructure-supported DNA probes, with methylene blue (MB) serving as the hybridization redox indicator, for the first time. Specifically, the use of cross-shaped DNA origami nanostructures containing multiple single-stranded DNA probes at preselected locations on each DNA nanostructure could increase the accessibility and the recognition efficiency of the probes (due to the rational controlled density of DNA probes). …

Iron is one of the most abundant elements in the environment and in the human body. As an essential nutrient, iron homeostasis is tightly regulated, and iron dysregulation is implicated in numerous pathologies, including neuro-degenerative diseases, atherosclerosis, and diabetes. Endogenous iron pool concentrations are directly linked to iron ion uptake from environmental sources such as drinking water, providing motivation for developing new technologies for assessing iron(ii) and iron(iii) levels in water. However, conventional methods for measuring aqueous iron pools remain laborious and costly and often require sophisticated equipment and/or additional processing steps to remove the iron ions from the original …

To guarantee the closed-loop stability about the Nash equilibrium, the explicit upper bound for the discounted factor is given. To show the efficacy of the presented online model-free solution, the integral VI method is compared with the model-based off-line policy iteration method. Moreover, the theoretical analysis of the integral VI algorithm in terms of three aspects, i.e., positive definiteness properties of the updated cost functions, the stability of the closed-loop …
