In this paper, the effect of post deposition annealing (PDA) on the chemical, structural, and electrical properties of the high-kY2O3 /Al2O3 stacking dielectric on p-type 4H-SiC were studied. High-k dielectric provides a physically thicker film with equivalent capacitance, therefore better exploits the high breakdown strength of 4H-SiC in its MOSFET devices. The Y2O3 /Al2O3 stacking films were deposited using RF magnetron sputtering, with PDA in Ar ambient at 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C and 1000 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results …

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the transmission of single charged 1-keV Ar ions through a cylindrical glass capillary of macroscopic dimensions. From quantitative measurements of the incoming and transmitted ion currents, combined with a detailed analysis, the amount of beam entering the capillary was determined. This, combined with the measured transmitted currents, was used to determine the amount of charge deposited on the inner wall of the capillary which produces the guiding electric field. We show experimental results for fully, and partially, discharged conditions of the time evolution of the guided beam intensity following a wide …

Kinetic Resolution Of Cyclic Secondary Azides, Using An Enantioselective Copper-Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition, Juliana R. Alexander, Amy A. Ott, En Chih Liu, Joseph J. Topczewski

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

An enantioselective copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (E-CuAAC) is reported by kinetic resolution. Chiral triazoles were isolated in high yield with limiting alkyne (up to 97:3 enantiomeric ratio (er)). A range of substrates were tolerated (>30 examples), and the reaction was scaled to >1 g. The er of a triazole product could be enhanced by recrystallization and the recovered scalemic azide could be racemized and recycled. Recycling the azide allows efficient use of the undesired azide enantiomer.

Positivity-Preserving, Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For The Cahn-Hilliard Equation With Logarithmic Potential, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we present and analyze finite difference numerical schemes for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with a logarithmic Flory Huggins energy potential. Both first and second order accurate temporal algorithms are considered. in the first order scheme, we treat the nonlinear logarithmic terms and the surface diffusion term implicitly and update the linear expansive term and the mobility explicitly. We provide a theoretical justification that this numerical algorithm has a unique solution, such that the positivity is always preserved for the logarithmic arguments, i.e., the phase variable is always between −1 and 1, at a point-wise level. in particular, our …

Course-based class discussions usually are limited to course syllabus and topics of lectures. If a discussion goes beyond course syllabus and the topics, usually there is a time constraint of class/lab periods, keeping educators and students from going deeper. Even without time constraints of class/lab settings, some students get engaged in the overall learning process more when they are challenged or tasked to solve a problem. This paper focuses on the pedagogical aspect of problem-based learning and its application for greater engagement of these students in quantifying the long term effects of land subsidence and rising sea levels in coastal …

The IETF is currently defining the 6TiSCH architecture for the Industrial Internet of Things to provide reliable and timely communication. 6TiSCH includes a distributed management mode, in which network resources are computed autonomously by nodes and allocated in a cooperative way. Specifically, nodes use the 6top protocol to negotiate network resources with their neighbors. In this paper, we investigate the performance of 6top protocol through a set of experimental measurements on a testbed. We show that the time required to complete a 6top transaction in a real environment is not negligible, as often assumed in many studies. In addition, a …

Lost circulation costs are a significant expense in drilling oil and gas wells. Drilling anywhere in the Rumaila field, one the world's largest oilfields, requires penetrating the Dammam formation, which is notorious for lost circulation issues and thus a great source of information on lost circulation events. This paper presents a new, more precise model to predict lost circulation volumes, equivalent circulation density (ECD), and rate of penetration (ROP) in the Dammam formation. A larger data set, more systematic statistical approach, and a machine-learning algorithm have produced statistical models that give a better prediction of the lost circulation volumes, ECD, …

We present a search for gravitational waves from 221 pulsars with rotation frequencies ≳ 10 Hz. We use advanced LIGO data from its first and second observing runs spanning 2015-2017, which provides the highest-sensitivity gravitational-wave data so far obtained. In this search we target emission from both the l = m = 2 mass quadrupole mode, with a frequency at twice that of the pulsar's rotation, and the l = 2, m = 1 mode, with a frequency at the pulsar rotation frequency. The search finds no evidence for gravitational-wave emission from any pulsar at either frequency. For the l …

Influence Of Frictional Or Rotational Kinetic Energy On Wellbore-Fluid/Temperature Profiles During Drilling Operations, Ahmed Q. Al Saedi, Ralph E. Flori, C. Shah Kabir

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Temperature-profile distributions in a wellbore during drilling operations might take different forms when applying the energy balance in the overall system. For steady-state conditions, wherein the wellbore is considered a closed system, adding any source of additional energy to this system can influence the predicted temperature profiles. This study presents a new analytical model to investigate the influence of rotational energy arising from the drillstring operation on the wellbore-temperature behavior.

A significant part of the drilling operation is rotation of the drillstring. Depending on the drilling rig, various equipment provides this kind of energy, such as the rotary table or …

Due to the piezoelectric nature of GaN, the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) could be engineered by strain. In this work, SiNx deposited using dual-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used as a stressor. The output performance of the devices was dominated by the surface passivation instead of the strain effect. However, the threshold voltage was increased by the liner-induced strain, supporting strain engineering as an effective approach to pursue the normally-off operation of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs.

Stabilization of an equilibrium point is an important control problem for underactuated systems. For a given control design, the ability of the system to remain stable in the presence of disturbances depends on the size of the region of attraction of the stabilized equilibrium. The sum of squares and trajectory reversing methods are combined together to generate a large estimate of the region of attraction. Then, this estimate is effectively enlarged by applying the impulse manifold method, which can stabilize equilibria from points lying outside the estimated region of attraction. In this paper, the generality of the approach is demonstrated …
