Three-Dimensional Rotation Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Prolate Spheroids In Simple Shear And Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang
Three-Dimensional Rotation Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Prolate Spheroids In Simple Shear And Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We examine a time-dependent, three-dimensional rotation of magnetic ellipsoidal particles in a two-dimensional, simple shear flow and a uniform magnetic field. We consider that the particles have paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties, and we compare their rotational dynamics due to the strengths and directions of the applied uniform magnetic field. We determine the critical magnetic field strength that can pin the particles' rotations. Above the critical field strength, the particles' stable steady angles were determined. In a weak magnetic regime (below the critical field strength), a paramagnetic particle's polar angle will oscillate toward the magnetic field plane while its azimuthal angle …

We present a MultiConfiguration Time Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method as an attractive alternative approach to the usual quantum close-coupling method that approaches some computational limits in the calculation of rotational excitation (and de-excitation) between polyatomic molecules (here collisions between triatomic and diatomic rigid molecules). We have performed a computational investigation of the rotational (de-)excitation of the benchmark rigid rotor H2O-H2 system on a recently developed Potential Energy Surface of the complex using the MCTDH method. We focus here on excitations and de-excitations from the 000, 111, and 110 states of H2 …

Stochastic Partial Inductance For The Power Integrity Analysis By Polynomial Chaos Expansion, Haimi Qiu, Lijun Jiang, Albert Ruehli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model has attracted great interests to overcome challenges in the power integrity analysis. However, the increasing miniaturization in electronics makes the uncertainty effect an ever more central issue to accurately estimate the inductance in the power distribution networks (PDNs) of high-speed PCBs. In this paper, we propose a stochastic partial inductance modeling approach to quantify the stochastic inductance. Specifically, the deterministic partial inductance is re-formulated using the polynomial chaos expansion. Following the Galerkin projection and polynomial orthogonality, stochastic partial inductance is represented by polynomial bases, which significantly reduces the complexity of the system and leads …

Impulse Response For Full Wave Peec Models Avoiding Late Time Instability, Albert E. Ruehli, Luigi Lombardi, Giulio Antonini, Ye Tao, Michel S. Nakhla, Francesco Ferranti
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Late time instability is a key issue for obtaining time domain solutions using Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) full-wave techniques. However, impulse inputs lead to a convenient way to cascade time domain solutions for many problems. In this paper we show that stable impulse response solutions can be obtained for full-wave PEEC (Partial Element Equivalent Circuit) models which include retarded partial elements. The conventional time stepping technique is replaced by using the so called NILT (Numerical Inverse Laplace Transform) technique. We show that the late time unstable poles in the EM formulation are not excited by the NILT based solution.
Probability Density Of The Fractional Langevin Equation With Reflecting Walls, Thomas Vojta, Sarah Skinner, Ralf Metzler
Probability Density Of The Fractional Langevin Equation With Reflecting Walls, Thomas Vojta, Sarah Skinner, Ralf Metzler
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate anomalous diffusion processes governed by the fractional Langevin equation and confined to a finite or semi-infinite interval by reflecting potential barriers. As the random and damping forces in the fractional Langevin equation fulfill the appropriate fluctuation-dissipation relation, the probability density on a finite interval converges for long times towards the expected uniform distribution prescribed by thermal equilibrium. In contrast, on a semi-infinite interval with a reflecting wall at the origin, the probability density shows pronounced deviations from the Gaussian behavior observed for normal diffusion. If the correlations of the random force are persistent (positive), particles accumulate at the …

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of electromagnetic (EM) beams are utilized for multiplexing in communication systems, where each OAM mode is encoded with data. The OAM index, or the so-called topological charge, identifies each OAM mode. Recently, the amplitude of OAM mode has also been used as another modulation format. Therefore, accurate extraction of not only the OAM index but also the corresponding amplitude is required. In this paper, a modified dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) algorithm is proposed to analyze the OAM modes. We show that accurate topological charges and high-resolution amplitude patterns of both single OAM mode and …

Data To Risk-Informed Decisions Through Bridge Model Updating, Iris Tien
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
Across the country, bridge structures are aging with use commonly extending beyond their original design lives. Decisions to repair, retrofit or rehabilitate these structures will support continued reliability and resilience of these structures. To better understand the states of the bridges at any point in time, there are new technologies to inspect, monitor and assess bridge conditions.
To effectively use the results of these inspections and monitoring activities, we need an understanding of the relation between varying inspection parameters and the predicted performance of bridge structures.
In this seminar, we will describe methods to use inspection data to update assessment …

Our goal is to complement an entity ranking with human-readable explanations of how those retrieved entities are connected to the information need. While related to the problem of support passage retrieval, in this paper, we explore two underutilized indicators of relevance: contextual entities and entity salience. The effectiveness of the indicators is studied within a supervised learning-to-rank framework on a dataset from TREC Complex Answer Retrieval. We find that salience is a useful indicator, but it is often not applicable. In contrast, although performance improvements are obtained by using contextual entities, using contextual words still outperforms contextual entities.

We have measured and calculated fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for ionization of helium by 75-keV proton impact. Ejected electrons with a speed close to and above the projectile speed were investigated. This range of kinematics represents a largely unexplored regime. A high sensitivity of the FDCS to the details of the description of the few-body dynamics, reported earlier for ionization of H2, was confirmed. A peak structure was found in an electron angular range between the regions where the so-called binary and recoil peaks are usually observed. The need for nonperturbative calculations using a two-center basis set …

This study demonstrates the potential use of the NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) to examine ground radar (GR) miscalibration and other uncertainty sources (e.g., partial beam blockage). We acquired the GPM Ground Validation System Validation Network reflectivity matchups between the DPR and three GRs (two in Iowa and one in South Dakota) for 2014–2017. We then refined the matching parameters (e.g., time separation) to reduce uncertainty in the matchup samples by analyzing the sensitivity of the matchup statistical properties to changes in these parameters. To reconcile the same observables (i.e., reflectivity) with different observational properties among …

A family of ambient-dried poly benzoxazine aerogels is prepared with a facile and scalable process as a high-performance polymeric aerogel with strong and robust thermomechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Those materials are inherently flame-retardant and superhydrophobic over the entire bulk density range (0.24-0.46 g cm-3). In addition, they are mechanically strong with strengths (e.g., 1 MPa at 0.24 g cm-3 at room temperature) higher than those of other high-performance aerogels of similar density, including polyimide and polyamide (Kevlar-like) aerogels as well as polymer-cross-linked X-silica and X-Vanadia aerogels, at a significantly lower cost. Furthermore, unlike most other glassy polymeric materials, the …

In this article, we classify nonoscillatory solutions of a system of three-dimensional time scale systems. We use the method of considering the sign of components of such solutions. Examples are given to highlight some of our results. Moreover, the existence of such solutions is obtained by Knaster's fixed point theorem.

Edge computing recently is increasingly popular due to the growth of data size and the need of sensing with the reduced center. Based on Edge computing architecture, we propose a novel crowdsensing framework called Edge-Mediated Spatial-Temporal Crowdsensing. This algorithm targets on receiving the environment information such as air pollution, temperature, and traffic flow in some parts of the goal area, and does not aggregate sensor data with its location information. Specifically, EdgeSense works on top of a secured peer-To-peer network consisted of participants and propose a novel Decentralized Spatial-Temporal Crowdsensing framework based on Parallelized Stochastic Gradient Descent. To approximate the …

Iron nanoparticles (nano Fe) were extracted from coal fly ash (CFA) or ferric chloride (FeCl3) and used for acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation. Characterization was achieved by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and the Braunaer–Emmet–Teller (BET) surface area determination. The HRTEM indicated good dispersion of the characteristic bead-like structure of nano Fe. It was also observed that the nano Fe were mainly in the zero-valent oxidation state, as denoted by the characteristic peak at ≈ 44.7° in the XRD analysis; it was accompanied by the generally accepted oxide …

Output-Constrained Control Of Nonaffine Multiagent Systems With Partially Unknown Control Directions, Bo Fan, Qinmin Yang, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Youxian Sun
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, an output-constrained control algorithm is presented for the consensus control of a class of unknown nonaffine multiagent systems (MASs) with partially unknown control directions. Our contribution includes a step forward beyond the usual consensus stabilization result to show that the outputs of agents remain within user-defined time-varying constraints. To achieve the new results, an error transformation technique is established to generate an equivalent MAS from the original one. Stabilization and consensus of the transformed agent states ensure both the satisfaction of the time-varying constraints and the consensus of the original agent states. Based on the Nussbaum gain …

The transient behavior for four different types of TVS (non-snapback, snapback, spark gap, varistor) is modeled using the same modeling framework. By a 10 ns VF-TLP, the quasi-static I-V curve and the transient turn-on are captured and modeled in ADS. The models are applied in a SEED simulation to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the modeling frame.

Measurement Of Adhesion Of Sternal Wires To A Novel Bioactive Glass-Based Adhesive, Varinder Pal Singh Sidhu, Mark R. Towler, Marcello Papini
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Stainless steel wires are the standard method for sternal closure because of their strength and rigidity, the simplicity of the process, and the short healing time that results from their application. Despite this, problems still exist with sternal stability due to micromotion between the two halves of the dissected and wired sternum. Recently, a novel glass-based adhesive was developed which, in cadaveric trials and in conjunction with wiring, was shown to restrict this micromotion. However, in order to avoid complications during resternotomy, the adhesive should adhere only to the bone and not the sternal wire. In this study, sternal wires …

We perform an unmodeled search for persistent, directional gravitational wave (GW) sources using data from the first and second observing runs of Advanced LIGO. We do not find evidence for any GW signals. We place limits on the broadband GW flux emitted at 25 Hz from point sources with a power law spectrum at Fα,Θ < (0.05-25) x 10−8 erg cm−2 s−1 Hz−1 and the (normalized) energy density spectrum in GWs at 25 Hz from extended sources at Ωα(Θ) < (0.19-2.89) x 10−8 sr−1 where α is the spectral index of the energy density spectrum. These represent improvements of …

Due to an error at the publisher, in the published article the number of pulsars presented in the paper is incorrect in multiple places throughout the text. Specifically, "222" pulsars should be "221." Additionally, the number of pulsars for which we have EM observations that fully overlap with O1 and O2 changes from "168" to "167." Elsewhere, in the machine-readable table of Table 1 and in Table 2, the row corresponding to pulsar J0952-0607 should be excised as well. Finally, in the caption for Table 2 the number of pulsars changes from "188" to "187." IOP Publishing sincerely regrets this …

Gravitational-wave astronomy has been firmly established with the detection of gravitational waves from the merger of ten stellar-mass binary black holes and a neutron star binary. This paper reports on the all-sky search for gravitational waves from intermediate mass black hole binaries in the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network. The search uses three independent algorithms: two based on matched filtering of the data with waveform templates of gravitational-wave signals from compact binaries, and a third, model-independent algorithm that employs no signal model for the incoming signal. No intermediate mass black hole binary event …
