Workers of hazardous material (hazmat) transportation have a higher chance than other workers to be exposed to various risks in their workplace. Assisting them to safely operate in their workplace in a near real-time manner is in particular need. This paper presents a study of designing, prototyping and developing feedback systems to help increase the risk awareness of workers in the loading and uploading phases of hazmat transportation. The first system was prototyped on an Arduino board, serving as the reference for system development. Then, the second system, named a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon based system, was designed as …

A Mixed Method Study Of Infrastructure Resilience Education And Instruction, John Richards, Suzanna Long
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters increases, the importance of improving the resilience of complex infrastructure systems in an uncertain environment is increasingly critical. Proper training and education are key components to addressing this issue, but it is unclear how and where modeling under uncertainty, infrastructure systems management, and resilient systems are integrated into the standard undergraduate and graduate engineering management curriculum. This research uses a mixed method to determine whether and at what level engineering managers receive instruction regarding the implementation of tools and techniques to improve infrastructure resilience. A review of current courses and …

Flood Management Deep Learning Model Inputs: A Review Of Necessary Data And Predictive Tools, Jacob Hale, Suzanna Long, Steven Corns, Tom Shoberg
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current flood management models are often hampered by the lack of robust predictive analytics, as well as incomplete datasets for river basins prone to heavy flooding. This research uses a State-of-the-Art matrix (SAM) analysis and integrative literature review to categorize existing models by method and scope, then determines opportunities for integrating deep learning techniques to expand predictive capability. Trends in the SAM analysis are then used to determine geospatial characteristics of the region that can contribute to flash flood scenarios, as well as develop inputs for future modeling efforts. Preliminary progress on the selection of one urban and one rural …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Data collected from a solar car is monitored in real-time, which allows for intelligent decision making, efficient debugging, and high-quality testing for solar car teams. This paper compares three databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB) to determine the optimal database system that should be used at solar car competitions. Each database system was tested using simulated solar car data to measure read and write speeds, and quality of performance on a low-power computer. Data were analyzed and displayed with custom interfaces to improve the user experience at solar car competitions.

Neural Network Predictive Controller For Grid-Connected Virtual Synchronous Generator, Sepehr Saadatmand, Mohamad Saleh Sanjari Nia, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a neural network predictive controller is proposed to regulate the active and the reactive power delivered to the grid generated by a three-phase virtual inertia-based inverter. The concept of the conventional virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is discussed, and it is shown that when the inverter is connected to non-inductive grids, the conventional PI-based VSGs are unable to perform acceptable tracking. The concept of the neural network predictive controller is also discussed to replace the traditional VSGs. This replacement enables inverters to perform in both inductive and non-inductive grids. The simulation results confirm that a well-trained neural network …

Heuristic Dynamic Programming For Adaptive Virtual Synchronous Generators, Sepehr Saadatmand, Mohamad Saleh Sanjari Nia, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper a neural network heuristic dynamic programing (HDP) is used for optimal control of the virtual inertia-based control of grid connected three-phase inverters. It is shown that the conventional virtual inertia controllers are not suited for non-inductive grids. A neural network-based controller is proposed to adapt to any impedance angle. Applying an adaptive dynamic programming controller instead of a supervised controlled method enables the system to adjust itself to different conditions. The proposed HDP consists of two subnetworks: critic network and action network. These networks can be trained during the same training cycle to decrease the training time. …

Dual Heuristic Dynamic Programing Control Of Grid-Connected Synchronverters, Sepehr Saadatmand, Mohamad Saleh Sanjari Nia, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new approach to control a grid-connected synchronverter by using a dual heuristic dynamic programing (DHP) design is presented. The disadvantages of conventional synchronverter controller such as the challenges to cope with nonlinearity, uncertainties, and non-inductive grids are discussed. To deal with the aforementioned challenges a neural network–based adaptive critic design is introduced to optimize the associated cost function. The characteristic of the neural networks facilitates the performance under uncertainties and unknown parameters (e.g. different power angles). The proposed DHP design includes three neural networks: system NN, action NN, and critic NN. The simulation results compare the performance of the …

A Study Of Brain Neuronal And Functional Complexities Estimated Using Multiscale Entropy In Healthy Young Adults, Sreevalsan S. Menon, K. Krishnamurthy
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Brain complexity estimated using sample entropy and multiscale entropy (MSE) has recently gained much attention to compare brain function between diseased or neurologically impaired groups and healthy control groups. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rfMRI) blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signals in a large cohort (n = 967) of healthy young adults, the present study maps neuronal and functional complexities estimated by using MSE of BOLD signals and BOLD phase coherence connectivity, respectively, at various levels of the brain’s organization. The functional complexity explores patterns in a higher dimension than neuronal complexity and may better discern changes in brain functioning. …

We Unravel The Nonequilibrium Correlated Quantum Quench Dynamics Of An Impurity Traveling Through A Harmonically Confined Bose-Einstein Condensate In One-Dimension. For Weak Repulsive Interspecies Interactions The Impurity Oscillates Within The Bosonic Gas. At Strong Repulsions And Depending On Its Prequench Position The Impurity Moves Towards An Edge Of The Bosonic Medium And Subsequently Equilibrates. This Equilibration Being Present Independently Of The Initial Velocity, The Position And The Mass Of The Impurity Is Inherently Related To The Generation Of Entanglement In The Many-Body System. Focusing On Attractive Interactions The Impurity Performs A Damped Oscillatory Motion Within The Bosonic Bath, A Behavior …

G-quadruplexes (G4s) and i-motifs (iMs) are tetraplex DNA structures. Sequences capable of forming G4/iMs are abundant near the transcription start sites (TSS) of several genes. G4/iMs affect gene expression in vitro. Depending on the gene, the presence of G4/iMs can enhance or suppress expression, making it challenging to discern the underlying mechanism by which they operate. Factors affecting G4/iM structures can provide additional insight into their mechanism of regulation. One such factor is epigenetic modification. The 5-hydroxymethylated cytosines (5hmCs) are epigenetic modifications that occur abundantly in human embryonic stem cells (hESC). The 5hmCs, like G4/iMs, are known to participate in …

Prediction Of Nonlinear Vertical Settlement Of A Pile Group Consisting Of New And Existing Displacement Piles In Clay Strata, Lin Li, Weibing Gong
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reusing existing displacement piles is economical, timesaving, and environment friendly. This paper presents an analytical approach for predicting the load carrying behavior of pile groups consisting of new and existing displacement piles. The evolutions of the undrained shear strength and shear modulus of clay adjacent to the piles from installation through consolidation to long-term ageing are investigated to determine the load carrying behavior of displacement piles. The nonlinear load-settlement behavior of an individual pile is modelled by load-transfer method, where the exponential function-based load-transfer models integrating the two developed soil parameters are employed to represent the nonlinear behavior at the …

3D face alignment approaches have strong advantages over 2D with respect to representational power and robustness to illumination and pose. Over the past few years, a number of research groups have made rapid advances in dense 3D alignment from 2D video and obtained impressive results. How these various methods compare is relatively unknown. Previous benchmarks addressed sparse 3D alignment and single image 3D reconstruction. No commonly accepted evaluation protocol exists for dense 3D face reconstruction from video with which to compare them. The 2nd 3D Face Alignment in the Wild from Videos (3DFAW-Video) Challenge extends the previous 3DFAW 2016 competition …

Tracking The 6-Dof Flight Trajectory Of Windborne Debris Using Stereophotogrammetry, Chaman Sabharwal, Yanlin Guo
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Numerous post-windstorm investigations have reported that windborne debris can cause costly damage to the envelope of buildings in urban areas under strong winds (e.g., during hurricanes or tornados). Thus, understanding the physics of debris flight is of critical importance. Previously developed numerical models describing debris flight physics have not been validated for the complex urban flow environment; such a validation requires experimentally measuring the debris flight trajectory in wind tunnel tests. In this context, this paper proposes a debris measurement algorithm using stereophotogrammetry. This algorithm aims to determine the six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) trajectory and velocity of flying debris, addressing the research …

Sediment Respiration Pulses In Intermittent Rivers And Ephemeral Streams, D. Von Schiller, T. Daltry, Dev Niyogi
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) may represent over half the global stream network, but their contribution to respiration and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is largely undetermined. In particular, little is known about the variability and drivers of respiration in IRES sediments upon rewetting, which could result in large pulses of CO2. We present a global study examining sediments from 200 dry IRES reaches spanning multiple biomes. Results from standardized assays show that mean respiration increased 32-fold to 66-fold upon sediment rewetting. Structural equation modeling indicates that this response was driven by sediment texture and organic …

An Optimal Edg Method For Distributed Control Of Convection Diffusion Pdes, X. Zhang, Y. Zhang, John R. Singler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose an embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) method to approximate the solution of a distributed control problem governed by convection diffusion PDEs, and obtain optimal a priori error estimates for the state, dual state, their uxes, and the control. Moreover, we prove the optimize-then-discretize (OD) and discrtize-then-optimize (DO) approaches coincide. Numerical results confirm our theoretical results.

There has been an exponential growth in the microelectronics industry over the last 70 years with a consistent miniaturization of transistors' size and increase in the speed and on-chip transistors density with reasonable power consumption, as seen in Figure 1 [1]. This trend will saturate soon especially due to the unintended thermal noise that is dissipated, as the density of transistors on the chips increase and as the corresponding electronics approach their physical limits. There is a need to implement new processing and computing techniques [2] with more compact size, lower power consumption and enhanced performance. Neuromorphic computing mimics the …

Oscillating angularly rotating a container containing a mate rial may cause the material to be separate. Denser or heavier material may unexpectedly tend to be collected relatively close to the axis of rotation, while less dense or light material may tend to collect relatively away from the axis of rotation. Oscillation along an arcuate path provides high lysing efficiency. Alternatively, a micromotor may drive an impeller removably received in a container. Lysing may be implemented in batch mode, flow - through stop or semi-batch mode, or flow - through continuous mode. Lysing particulate material may exceed material to be lysed …

Synthesis and characterization of the first mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) containing tantalum are reported here, along with their potential application as hemostats. Silica MBGs were synthesized using with the molar composition of (80-x)% Si, 15% Ca, 5% P, and x% Ta. It was found that incorporation of >1 mol % Ta into the MBGs changes their physical and chemical properties. Increasing Ta content from 0 to 10 mol % causes a decrease in the surface area and pore volume of ~20 and ~35%, respectively. This is due to the increase in nonbridging oxygens and mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient which …

Herein, versatile, and reproducible method to prepare Pd/Fe3O4 via hydrothermal synthesis. The vital role of this catalyst is in its potential use in CO oxidation catalysis. The Pd/Fe3O4 shows a distinctive activity. TEM images confirmed that Pd nanoparticles of 8-12 nm have a well dispersion on the surface of magnetite (Fe3O4). Moreover, the prepared catalyst is recycled with remarkable catalytic activity. This outstanding activity is mainly a direct result of the strong metal-support interaction. The defect sites in the reduced iron oxide act as nucleation centers that enable anchoring of …

When formed through dynamical interactions, stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) may retain eccentric orbits (e > 0.1 at 10 Hz) detectable by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Eccentricity can therefore be used to differentiate dynamically formed binaries from isolated BBH mergers. Current template-based gravitational-wave searches do not use waveform models associated with eccentric orbits, rendering the search less efficient for eccentric binary systems. Here we present the results of a search for BBH mergers that inspiral in eccentric orbits using data from the first and second observing runs (O1 and O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. We carried out the search with …
