Efficient Architecture Search For Deep Neural Networks, Ram Deepak Gottapu, Cihan H. Dagli May 2020

Efficient Architecture Search For Deep Neural Networks, Ram Deepak Gottapu, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses the scalability challenge of automatic deep neural architecture search by implementing a parameter sharing approach with regularized genetic algorithm (RGE). The key idea is to use a regularized genetic algorithm (RGE) on a pre-determined template and discover a high-performance architecture by searching for the optimal chromosome. During evolution, each model corresponding to a discovered chromosome is trained for a fixed number of epochs to minimize a canonical cross-entropy loss on a given training dataset. Meanwhile, the performance of the trained model on validation dataset is used as a fitness value to perform the evolutions. Because of parameter …

Modeling And Simulation Of A Robotic Bridge Inspection System, Md Monirul Karim, Cihan H. Dagli, Ruwen Qin

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inspection and preservation of the aging bridges to extend their service life has been recognized as one of the important tasks of the State Departments of Transportation. Yet manual inspection procedure is not efficient to determine the safety status of the bridges in order to facilitate the implementation of appropriate maintenance. In this paper, a complex model involving a remotely controlled robotic platform is proposed to inspect the safety status of the bridges which will eliminate labor-intensive inspection. Mobile cameras from unmanned airborne vehicles (UAV) are used to collect bridge inspection data in order to record the periodic changes of …

Local Orbital-Angular-Momentum Dependent Surface States With Topological Protection, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zhihao Lan, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chiral surface states along the zigzag edge of a valley photonic crystal in the honeycomb lattice are demonstrated. By decomposing the local fields into orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, we find that the chiral surface states present OAM-dependent unidirectional propagation characteristics. Particularly, the propagation directivities of the surface states are quantified by the local OAM decomposition and are found to depend on the chirality's of both the source and surface states. These findings allow for the engineering control of the unidirectional propagation of electromagnetic energy without requiring an ancillary cladding layer. Furthermore, we examine the propagation of the chiral surface …

Status Of The Blackstripe (Fundulus Notatus) And Blackspotted (F. Olivaceus) Topminnows In The Ozark Uplands Of Central Missouri, Nathaniel Steffensmeier, Naznin Sultana Remex, Robert Hrabik, David D. Duvernell

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The topminnow species Fundulus notatus and F. olivaceus have broadly overlapping geographic distributions that extend throughout much of the central and southern United States. In the northern portion of their respective ranges, in Missouri, the regional distributions of the two species coincide largely with recognized ecoregions. In the unglaciated southern half of Missouri, F. olivaceus is distributed throughout Ozark upland habitats while F. notatus is abundant in marginal large river and prairie habitats along the Ozark borders. An exception to this partitioning is the historical report of abundant F. notatus in the Bourbeuse and upper Meramec River drainages within the …

Treating neuropathic pain is challenging and novel non-opioid-based medicines are needed. Using unbiased receptomics, transcriptomic analyses, immunofluorescence, and in situ hybridization, we found that the expression of the orphan GPCR Gpr160 and GPR160 increased in the rodent dorsal horn of the spinal cord following traumatic nerve injury. Genetic and immunopharmacological approaches demonstrated that GPR160 inhibition in the spinal cord prevented and reversed neuropathic pain in male and female rodents without altering normal pain response. GPR160 inhibition in the spinal cord attenuated sensory processing in the thalamus, a key relay in the sensory discriminative pathways of pain. We also identified cocaine- …

Unjust Food Systems And Applied Mereology, Shane Ray Epting May 2020

Unjust Food Systems And Applied Mereology, Shane Ray Epting

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional food systems are highly complex entities with numerous components that span the globe. Having an overabundance of parts creates 'globalized opacity', a condition wherein the sheer number of parts makes it incredibly challenging to see how these parts fit together. In turn, people cannot see how these systems help create and perpetuate social injustices in select instances. With this notion in mind, it should be no surprise that numerous issues require mitigation. Gaining a clear view of the nature of such problems could improve how food-justice researchers understand the complexity involved in the issues that plague food systems, which …

The Biostratigraphy Of The Offshore Niger Delta During The Late Quaternary: Complexities And Progress Of Dating Techniques, Onema Adojoh, Fabienne Marret-Davies, Robert Duller, Peter Osterloff, Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe, Malcolm Hart, Christopher Smart

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Late Quaternary marine sediments from the Niger Delta lacks an age model using conventional radiocarbon dating due to the rarity of calcareous macrofossils. The proprietary nature of material drilled by companies prospecting for hydrocarbons in the Niger Delta basin, and in the rare cases when samples are available for study as well as freshwater dilution from continental runoff have contributed to this dearth of knowledge. The availability of three shallow marine (∼3 m) gravity cores obtained from the eastern, central, and western parts of the Niger Delta provides the opportunity for biostratigraphy utilizing well-preserved marker species of planktonic foraminifera …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Structural disorder has been known to suppress carrier concentration and carrier mobility in common covalent semiconductors, such as silicon, by orders of magnitude. This is expected from a reduced overlap of the electron clouds on neighboring orbitals and the formation of localized tail states near the band edges caused by local distortions and lack of periodicity in the amorphous phase. In striking contrast to the covalent semiconductors, wide-bandgap oxides of post-transition metals with ionic bonding not only allow for crystalline-like electron mobility upon amorphization, but also exhibit two orders of magnitude higher carrier concentration in the disordered phase as compared …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Abstract: We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the electron-impact ionization dynamics of H2 at an impact-energy of 520 eV. The molecular-frame fivefold-differential cross sections were measured for electron emission in the plane perpendicular to the incoming projectile beam. An (e, 2e + ion) triple coincidence method was used covering projectile scattering angles of 6.5°, 10.0° and 20.0° and ejected energies of 20 eV and 30 eV. The experimental cross sections are compared with results from the multi-center distorted-wave (MCDW) as well as the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) approaches. M3DW is in overall better agreement with the …

The size and weight of conventional imaging systems is defined by costly non-planar lenses and the complex lens assemblies required to minimize optical aberrations. The ability to engineer gradient refractive index (GRIN) optics has the potential to overcome constraints of traditional homogeneous lenses by reducing the number of components in optical systems. Here, an innovative strategy to realize this goal based on monolithic GRIN media created in Ge-As-Se-Pb chalcogenide infrared nanocomposites is presented. A gradient heat treatment to spatially modulate the volume fraction of high refractive index Pb-rich nanocrystals within a glass matrix is utilized, providing a GRIN profile while …

Microwave Nondestructive Detection Of Influenc Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) In Materials Properties Of Concrete Specimens, Reza Zoughi, John R. Gallion, Nolan W. Hayes May 2020

Microwave Nondestructive Detection Of Influenc Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) In Materials Properties Of Concrete Specimens, Reza Zoughi, John R. Gallion, Nolan W. Hayes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Alkali-silica reaction has been identified to be a cause deterioration in concrete structures. This reaction takes place when alkalis (e.g., potassium and sodium), hydroxyl ions in the pore solution and certain siliceous minerals (present in some aggregates) are present, resulting in what is known as the ASR gel. Expansion of this gel, in the presence of heat and moisture, causes stresses that lead to microcracking and deterioration of concrete. The criticality of this problem has been particularly highlighted in recent past with respect to nuclear power plant containment concrete structures. Although there have been many studies devoted to examining and …

Impact Of Large-Scale Correlated Failures On Multilevel Virtualized Networks, Max G. Medina, Mohammed J.F. Alenazi, Egemen K. Cetinkaya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Communication network architectures have been evolving with increased programmability and virtualization of physical infrastructures. While this evolution enables a faster introduction of new services and efficient utilization of resources, the complexities and interdependencies among the physical and virtual infrastructures, as well as the control and management planes, hinder a complete understanding of the system at hand. It is imperative, therefore, to model and study these evolving virtualized infrastructures. We propose a multilevel virtualized network embedding model and study its performance against correlated failures. Our analysis of multiple synthetic network models identified that grid-like infrastructures capture the realistic Internet2 structure the …

Post-Impact Flexural Behavior Of Carbon-Aramid/Epoxy Hybrid Composites, A. Wagih, T. A. Sebaey, A. Yudhanto, G. Lubineau

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hybrid polymeric composites are currently used in aerospace structures due to their specific strength and stiffness as well as larger design space. This paper presents an experimental study on residual flexural strength of impacted Carbon-aramid/Epoxy hybrid composite laminates. Specimens are designed in a sandwich form in which plies of aramid/epoxy represent the core and carbon/epoxy plies play the role of face sheets. This design is expected to take advantage of the high energy absorption capabilities of aramid/epoxy composites. We pre-damage such composites by performing low-velocity impact at different energy levels. Three-point bending tests then are used to measure the residual …

A Cascade Reaction Of Cinnamyl Azides With Acrylates Directly Generates Tetrahydro-Pyrrolo-Pyrazole Heterocycles, Angela S. Carlson, En Chih Liu, Joseph J. Topczewski

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Developing reactions to generate complex and modular building blocks in a concise and direct fashion remains a contemporary synthetic challenge. This work describes a stereoselective cascade reaction between allylic azides and acrylates that directly generates tetrahydro-pyrrolo-pyrazole ring systems. These products contain up to four contiguous stereocenters, two of which may be tetrasubstituted carbon atoms attached to a nitrogen atom. Over 30 examples are provided with an average isolated yield of 71% (ranging from 40% to 94%). The reaction was easily scaled to use more than one gram of starting material, and the products can be readily diversified.

Investigation Of Honey As The Electrolyte Gate Dielectrics Of Field Effect Transistors, Binghao Wang, Kuan Yew Cheong, Chih Fang Huang, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper reports on the investigation of honey as the electrolyte gate dielectrics of graphene field effect transistors. Transfer and output characteristics of graphene transistors were collected at room temperature and 40 °C under open air. Typical behaviors such as Dirac neutrality point and linear relation of drain current with drain-source voltage at low field and various gate bias voltages were achieved. In addition, cleaning and reapplication of honey on transistors only show slight changes in those characteristics.

Characterization Of The Is200/Is605 Insertion Sequence Family In Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, Michael Sadler, Melanie R. Mormile, Ronald L. Frank

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mobile DNA elements play a significant evolutionary role by promoting genome plasticity. Insertion sequences are the smallest prokaryotic transposable elements. They are highly diverse elements, and the ability to accurately identify, annotate, and infer the full genomic impact of insertion sequences is lacking. Halanaerobium hydrogeniformans is a haloalkaliphilic bacterium with an abnormally high number of insertion sequences. One family, IS200/IS605, showed several interesting features distinct from other elements in this genome. Twenty-three loci harbor elements of this family in varying stages of decay, from nearly intact to an ends-only sequence. The loci were characterized with respect to two divergent open …

We Investigate The Nonequilibrium Quantum Dynamics Of One And Two Heavy Fermionic Impurities Being Harmonically Trapped And Repulsively Interacting With A Finite Ensemble Of Majority Fermions. A Quench Of The Potential Of The Majority Species From A Double-Well To A Harmonic Trap Is Applied, Enforcing Its Counterflow, Which In Turn Perturbs The Impurities. For Weak Repulsions, It Is Shown That The Mixture Undergoes A Periodic Mixing And Demixing Dynamics, While Stronger Interactions Lead To A More Pronounced Dynamical Spatial Separation. In The Presence Of Correlations, The Impurity Exhibits An Expansion Dynamics Which Is Absent In The Hartree-Fock Case, Resulting In …
