Two recent experimental observations at the ATOMKI Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (regarding the angular emission pattern of electron-positron pairs from nuclear transitions from excited states in 8Be and 4He) indicate the possible existence of a particle of a rest mass energy of roughly 17 MeV. The so-called X17 particle constitutes a virtual state in the process, preceding the emission of the electron-positron pair. Based on the symmetry of the nuclear transitions (1+ → 0+ and 0- →0 +), the X17 could either be a vector, or a pseudoscalar particle. Here, we …

Current studies that focus solely on the cause of the increase in seismicity neglect to include considerations for effects of small magnitude cluster events on federal infrastructure. These effects can be almost undetectable at first, but if left unchecked can evolve into a larger issue. The need to reassess and potentially modify the established risk assessment practices for evaluations of federal infrastructure needs to be reviewed to ensure the continued ability of the structure to function as intended. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is responsible for hydroelectric power, flood protection, recreational areas, navigational channels and water supply along …

A General And Systematic Method To Design Neutralization Lines For Isolation Enhancement In Mimo Antenna Arrays, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A general and systematic approach is the first time proposed in this paper to design the neutralization line (NL) for isolation enhancement in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna arrays. Each NL consists of a metal strip and a reactive component attached at its middle position. It is connected with every two antenna radiators to generate an additional coupling path against the original antenna coupling for isolation enhancement. A general network model that leads to a systematic design procedure is developed to meet the required isolation criteria. Three practical examples are presented and used to verify the proposed NL-based decoupling technique (DT). …

For high-speed coding buses, it is a great challenge to evaluate the eye diagram accurately. Assuming that all data bits are independent and have uniform probabilities as previous estimation methods have done is not valid. In this paper, a new statistical method is proposed to estimate the worst-case eye diagrams and bit-error-rate (BER) eye diagrams for coding buses. The probability distribution of coded bus bit vectors is modeled based on the coding rule constraints. Then, actual worst pattern and eye diagram calculation is derived based on bus bit transition probabilities and double-edge responses. In order to validate the method, a …

In this article, a rugged linear array is proposed for covering both the LTE and 5G bands with an intermediate gain. The antenna is composed of a driven element, a set of directors, and a set of reflectors, where the excited element is a wideband high-efficiency electromagnetic structure (WHEMS) and the parasitic elements consist of metal rods. To achieve a rugged design, similar to the classic Yagi antenna, all of the elements should be conductively connected, so that it can be welded. The weldable mechanism is started on the driven radiating element. In addition, a balun is introduced in the …

Droplet-wall interactions are well known to generate a wide variety of outcomes such as spreading, splashing, receding, jetting, and rebounding. In this paper, we focus on the evolution of jets that form during the recoil of impinging drops on partially wetting hydrophilic substrates composed of cylindrical micropillars. The impact of the millimeter-sized drops of water-glycerol mixtures on the micro structured hydrophilic substrates is investigated by high-speed video photography. Impact velocity and fluid viscosity are varied to characterize the jets. Wetting angles are maintained in the range of 43.6° ≤θ≤51.4°. A regime map is constructed to convey the jet behavior at …

Metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth of nickel-doped zinc oxide (Ni-doped ZnO) thin films on sapphire was investigated. The structural and optical properties were studied. The samples were grown at two substrate temperatures (i.e., 450 and 550°C) and at three chamber pressures (22, 30 and 100 Torr). The Ni-doped ZnO samples showed the (002) hexagonal crystal structure with signs of secondary phases in X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. However, different XRD peak intensities were observed for these samples at different growth conditions with the same Ni flow rate injection to the reaction chamber. The samples grown at different growth conditions …

Due to the temperature-dependent resistivity of power distribution network (PDN) interconnects, a wiser and necessary strategy is to proceed the electrical-thermal cosimulation in order to include the thermal effects caused by Joule heating. As a natural domain decomposition method (DDM), in this article, a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed to facilitate the steady-state electrical and thermal coanalysis. With the intention to avoid solving a globally coupled steady-state matrix system equations resulted from the implicit numerical flux in DG, the block Thomas method is deployed to solve the entire domain in a subdomain-by-subdomain scheme. As a direct solver, the block …

Diagnostic theories are fundamental to Information Systems practice and are represented in trees. One way of creating diagnostic trees is by employing independent experts to construct such trees and compare them. However, good measures of similarity to compare diagnostic trees have not been identified. This paper presents an analysis of the suitability of various measures of association to determine the similarity of two diagnostic trees using bootstrap simulations. We find that three measures of association, Goodman and Kruskal's Lambda, Cohen's Kappa, and Goodman and Kruskal's Gamma (J Am Stat Assoc 49(268):732-764, 1954) each behave differently depending on what is inconsistent …

This study presents an investigation of the flow mechanism of carbon dioxide (CO2) through nano and micro pores and the impact of this flow on oil mobilization and asphaltene instability in the crude oil. The flow mechanism of CO2 is determined using numerical modeling through the Knudsen number to determine the flow regimes under different thermodynamic conditions. Following this, the oil production and asphaltene stability are studied using a filtration vessel supplemented with nano and micron sized filter membranes. The effect of varying CO2 injection pressure, oil viscosity, porous media pore size, and porous media thickness …

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection is one of the most applied enhanced oil recovery methods in the hydrocarbon industry, since it has the potential to increase oil recovery significantly and can help reduce greenhouse gases through carbon storage in hydrocarbon reservoirs. Carbon dioxide injection has a severe drawback, however, since it induces asphaltene precipitation by disrupting the asphaltene stability in crude oil that bears even the slightest asphaltene concentration. This can result in severe operational problems, such as reservoir pore plugging and wellbore plugging. This research investigates some of the main factors that impact asphaltene stability in crude oil …

Froth flotation process is extensively used for selective separation of base metal sulfides from uneconomic mineral resources. Reliable prediction of process outcomes (metal recovery and grade) is vital to ensure peak performance. This work employs an innovative hybrid machine learning (ML) model—constructed by combining the random forest model and the firefly algorithm—to predict froth flotation efficiency of galena and chalcopyrite in relation to various experimental process parameters. The hybrid model's prediction performance was rigorously evaluated and compared against four different standalone ML models. The outcomes of this study illustrate that the hybrid ML model has the prediction ability to process …

Observing, understanding, and mitigating the effects of failure in embedded systems is essential for building dependable control systems. We develop a software-based monitoring methodology to further this goal. This methodology can be applied to any embedded system peripheral and allows the system to operate normally while the monitoring software is running. We use software to instrument the operating system kernel and record indicators of system behavior. By comparing those indicators against baseline indicators of normal system operation, faults can be detected, and appropriate action can be taken. We implement this methodology to detect faults caused by electrostatic discharge in a …

High-precision positioning is critical for many Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications; however, most existing approaches are too expensive to be used in commercial products. A highly accurate differential global positioning system (DGPS) has not been widely used because of the difficulty in solving integer ambiguities in the single-frequency carrier phase. Multipath interference and receiver noise are the main reasons for limiting the DGPS accuracy and efficiency in solving integer ambiguities. In this article, we propose a combination of anti-multipath antennas and high-performance GPS receivers to effectively mitigate impairments due to multipath propagation and receiver noise. Furthermore, by exploiting more data available from …

A numerical model that incorporates temperature-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity was developed to simulate the extrusion process in extrusion-based additive manufacturing. Agreement with the experimental data was achieved by simulating a polylactic acid melt flow as a non-isothermal power law fluid using experimentally fitted parameters for polylactic acid. The model was used to investigate the temperature effect on the flow behavior, the cross-sectional area, and the uniformity of the extruded strand. OpenFOAM, an open source simulation tool based on the finite volume method, was used to perform the simulations. A computational module for solving the equations of non-isothermal multiphase flows was also …

This paper proposes an analytical model to estimate the service life of concrete pipelines buried in chloride contaminated soils, which properly considers the effects of nonuniformly distributed earth pressures on both the internal tensile stress of concrete protective cover and the chloride diffusion coefficient through the nonhomogeneous coefficient of earth pressure. It is assumed that the underground concrete pipeline arrives at the service life end when cracking induced by expansion pressure due to the corrosion products occurs in the concrete protective cover. Hence, the whole service life of underground concrete pipeline is composed of chloride diffusion period and protective cover …

This study proposes a new estimation method for vertically integrated liquid water content (VIL) using radar reflectivity volume data and temperature sounding retrieved from the numerical weather model analysis. This method addresses uncertainty factors in conventional VIL estimation associated with the effects from the bright band (BB) and radar beam geometry near the radar site. The new VIL is then used for precipitation classification (convective/stratiform) and wind turbine clutter detection in the hope that the estimated VIL indicating vertical activities or development of precipitation systems will account for the two independent subjects together, in opposite ways. The non-precipitation radar echoes …

Transportation agencies face escalating challenges in forecasting the traffic demand. Traditional prediction methods focused on individual transportation sectors and failed to study the inter-dependencies between the different transportation systems. Hence, there is a need for more advanced and holistic modeling techniques. To this end, this paper models and analyses an urban transportation system-of-systems incorporating seven various systems: population and GDP, CO2 emission, gasoline price and total vehicle trips, traffic demand, public and private transportation, transportation investment, and traffic congestion. Accordingly, this research simulates transportation networks as a collection of task-oriented systems that combine their resources to form a complex …

Consumer stock markets have long been a target of modeling efforts for the economic gains anticipatorily enabled by well-performing models. Aimed at identifying strategies capable of achieving desired returns, many modeling approaches have attempted to capture the innumerable and intricate complexities present within these adaptive socio-technical systems. Decreasingly constrained by available computation power, contemporary models have grown in sophistication to include several of the features present in de facto market systems. However, these models require extensive effort to dictate the variety of states, behaviors, and adaptations that entities of the system may exhibit. Reverse auction theory is the basis for competitive construction bidding process. The lowest bid method is utilized for selecting contractors in public projects. The winning contractor having the lowest bid value could be cursed when the submitted bid value results in negative profits. This is caused by many factors such as the contractor's estimation accuracy and markup. This is addressed in this paper by providing a model simulating the construction competitive bidding and the occurrence of the winner's curse. To this end, the authors show the extent to which the winner's curse affects the status of contracting companies. The objectives …
