We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed within a source distance of approximately 20 Mpc during the first and second observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No significant gravitational-wave candidate was detected. We report the detection efficiencies as a function of the distance for waveforms derived from multidimensional numerical simulations and phenomenological extreme emission models. The sources with neutrino-driven explosions are detectable at the distances approaching 5 kpc, and for magnetorotationally driven explosions the distances are up to 54 kpc. However, waveforms for extreme emission models are detectable up to …

In this paper, we generalize and compare Gompertz and Logistic dynamic equations in order to describe the growth patterns of bacteria and tumor. First of all, we introduce two types of Gompertz equations, where the first type 4-paramater and 3-parameter Gompertz curves do not include the logarithm of the number of individuals, and then we derive 4-parameter and 3-parameter Logistic equations. We notice that Logistic curves are better in modeling bacteria whereas the growth pattern of tumor is described better by Gompertz curves. Increasing the number of parameters of Logistic curves give favorable results for bacteria while decreasing the number …

Residential energy consumption has been rising rapidly during the last few decades. Several research efforts have been made to reduce residential energy consumption, including demand response and smart residential environments. However, recent research has shown that these approaches may actually cause an increase in the overall consumption, due to the complex psychological processes that occur when human users interact with these energy management systems. In this article, using an interdisciplinary approach, we introduce a perceived-value driven framework for energy management in smart residential environments that considers how users perceive values of different appliances and how the use of some appliances …

Establishment and maintenance of milkweed plants (Asclepias spp.) in agricultural landscapes of the north central United States are needed to reverse the decline of North America's eastern monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) population. Because of a lack of toxicity data, it is unclear how insecticide use may reduce monarch productivity when milkweed habitat is placed near maize and soybean fields. To assess the potential effects of foliar insecticides, acute cuticular and dietary toxicity of 5 representative active ingredients were determined: beta-cyfluthrin (pyrethroid), chlorantraniliprole (anthranilic diamide), chlorpyrifos (organophosphate), and imidacloprid and thiamethoxam (neonicotinoids). Cuticular median lethal dose values for …

Binary Metrics, Samer Assaf, Tom Cuchta, Matt Insall
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We define a binary metric as a symmetric, distributive lattice ordered magma-valued function of two variables, satisfying a “triangle inequality". Using the notion of a Kuratowski topology, in which topologies are specified by closed sets rather than open sets, we prove that every topology is induced by a binary metric. We conclude with a discussion on the relation between binary metrics and some separation axioms.

Using Scrap Tires As An Aggregate In Chip Seal - Phase Ii, Alireza Pourhassan, Ahmed Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Technical Reports
Chip seals are one of the most cost and performance effective pavement preservation treatments commonly used in the United States. An eco-friendly chip seal pavement, in which the natural aggregate was replaced by crumb rubber obtained from scrap tires, was recently developed by the research team at Missouri S&T, creating rubberized chip seal. This project investigated and optimized the performance of rubberized chip seal under different scenarios. During this project, laboratory chip seal specimens with different sizes were prepared and tested under simulated traffic loads with different loading parameters and environmental conditions. Also, the feasibility of the implementation and performance …

Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”
But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:
- The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
- Rag as …

Estimation Of Lubrication Layer Thickness And Composition Through Reverse Engineering Of Interface Rheometry Tests, Alexis Salinas, Dimitri Feys
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
During concrete pumping, a lubrication layer is formed near the pipe wall. Extensive research has been performed on measuring and modeling the properties of this layer and using these values to predict pumping pressures. However, there are numerous discussions in the literature about the composition and thickness of this layer: can it be considered mortar, a micromortar, or is it cement paste? In this paper, possible solutions for the thickness and composition of the lubrication layer are derived from interface rheometry tests. It is assumed that the lubrication layer is composed of one or more concentric layers of paste or …

The use of nanomaterial-based products continues to grow with advancing technology. Understanding the potential toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) is important to ensure that products containing them do not impose harmful effects to human or environmental health. In this study, we evaluated the comparative cytotoxicity between nickel oxide (NiO) and nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) in human bronchoalveolar carcinoma (A549) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell lines. Cellular viability studies revealed cell line-specific cytotoxicity in which nickel NPs were toxic to A549 cells but relatively nontoxic to HepG2 cells. Time-, concentration-, and particle-specific cytotoxicity was observed in A549 cells. NP-induced oxidative …

Prediction Of Tunnel Wall Convergences For Natm Tunnels Which Are Excavated In Weak-To-Fair-Quality Rock Masses Using Decision-Tree Technique And Rock Mass Strength Parameters, Özgür Satici, Tamer Topal
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Tunnel wall convergences should be predicted before the excavation and should be determined accurately in order to ensure safe and economic tunnel excavation media. For this to be possible, rock mass behaviors in the tunnel should also be estimated prior to excavation. This could be ensured by site investigation studies, numerical models and predictive statistics. In this study, the development of convergences during a tunnel excavation in Turkey, excavated by NATM technique, was evaluated by using statistical prediction techniques for weak-to-fair-quality rock masses. For this aim, actual tunnel wall convergence data and rock mass strength parameters were used. For prediction …

We have measured characteristic K x rays in coincidence with the scattered particles from collisions of hydrogenlike Ge ions with Kr atoms. The ions were first accelerated to 8.6 MeV/amu, post-stripped to H-like charge state, and decelerated to around 2.5 MeV/amu. From the measurements the probabilities for K-shell to K-shell charge transfer as a function of collision impact parameters were obtained. The probabilities show an onset of oscillations which are interpreted as quantum interference between the K-shell to K-shell electron transfer amplitudes in two spatially separated coupling regions in the incoming and outgoing parts of the collision. The probabilities of …

Spin triplet superconductivity in the Kondo lattice UTe2 appears to be associated with spin fluctuations originating from incipient ferromagnetic order. Here we show clear evidence of twofold enhancement of superconductivity under pressure, which discontinuously transitions to magnetic order, likely of ferromagnetic nature, at higher pressures. The application of a magnetic field tunes the system back across a first-order phase boundary. Straddling this phase boundary, we find another example of reentrant superconductivity in UTe2. As the superconductivity and magnetism exist on two opposite sides of the first-order phase boundary, our results indicate other microscopic mechanisms may be playing …

This paper demonstrates a new fabrication process for gallium nitride high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) free of plasma damages in the sub-100 nm T-shape gate area. The common peeling-off problems of electron beam resists during gate metal deposition process were solved by introducing a fluorine plasma treatment process before gate metal deposition. By combining dry and wet etching processes appropriately, an on/off ratio of 107 at a drain-to-source voltage of 1 V was achieved. This work also investigated the short channel effect in devices with gate lengths from 70 to 440 nm. Reducing gate length results in decrease of threshold …

Both amorphous and crystalline silicon are ubiquitous materials for electronics, photonics, and microelectromechanical systems. On-demand control of Si crystallinity is crucial for device manufacturing and to overcome the limitations of current phase-change materials (PCM) in active photonics. Fast reversible phase transformation in silicon, however, has never been accomplished due to the notorious challenge of amorphization. It is demonstrated that nanostructured Si can function as a PCM, since it can be reversibly crystallized and amorphized under nanosecond laser irradiation with different pulse energies. Reflection probing on a single nano disk's phase transformations confirms the distinct mechanisms for crystallization and amorphization. The …

The Reinforcing Effects Of Formal Control Enactment In Complex It Projects, Gloria Hui Wen Liu, Cecil Eng Huang Chua
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Complex IT projects pose particular challenges for the application of control, because of the dynamism and uncertainty involved. Prior studies suggest self-control can complement formal control within complex projects. However, how managers can enact controlee self-control remains an unsolved question. This paper proposes and investigates how enacted formal control unfolds during the course of an IT project and, in particular, how formal control enactment can promote or hinder controlee self-control. We demonstrate through case studies of a control in two wireless communication product development projects that an enabling control style can induce controlees to act to the benefit of both …

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology has achieved many great things, such as facial recognition, medical diagnosis, and self-driving cars. AI promises enormous benefits for economic growth, social development, as well as human well-being and safety improvement. However, the low-level of explainability, data biases, data security, data privacy, and ethical problems of AI-based technology pose significant risks for users, developers, humanity, and societies. As AI advances, one critical issue is how to address the ethical and moral challenges associated with AI. Even though the concept of “machine ethics” was proposed around 2006, AI ethics is still in the infancy stage. AI ethics …

In additive manufacturing, the variation of the fabrication process parameters influences the mechanical properties of a material such as tensile strength, impact toughness, hardness, fatigue strength, and so forth, but fatigue testing of metals fabricated with all different sets of process parameters is a very expensive and time-consuming process. Therefore, the nominal process parameters by means of minimum energy input were first identified for a dense part and then the optimized process parameters were determined based on the tensile and impact toughness test results obtained for 304L stainless steel deposited in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. Later, the high …

A parallel mechanism and smart gripper were designed and mounted on a rotorcraft drone to act as a robotic arm and hand. This empowers the drone to perform aerial manipulation and execute bridge maintenance. Hosing, drilling, and epoxying serve as case studies to test-and-evaluation and verify-and-validate the design. The approach, tasks, and findings are presented and show that the case studies are realizable. Conclusions and recommendations point to employing haptics-based human-in-the-loop approaches that can increase the scope of repair work involved in bridge maintenance

Impact sounding has been recognized as an effective technique to detect delamination in concrete structures, such as concrete decks. An enormous amount of sounding data can be generated/collected by the autonomous inspection systems equipped with impactors and microphones. However, the main challenge in the practical application of this technology is the development of advanced data analysis approaches for identifying defects from impact sounding data. In this study, the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) analysis and power-spectral density (PSD) analysis are combined to extract useful features of sounding data generated by the impact hammer. It has been found that the EMD method …

Ionizing interactions between charged particles and molecules of biological relevance have attracted considerable interest in the last decade due to its importance in medical radiation therapy. We have previously calculated triply differential cross sections for five biomolecules in collaboration with experimental groups. We used the molecular 3-body distorted wave approximation for these calculations. For ionization of biomolecules, experimentalists are unable to determine the orientation of the molecule at the time of ionization, which means that the calculated cross sections need to be averaged over all molecular orientations. At the time the calculations were performed, it was not numerically feasible for …
