Gate Diffusion Input Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Circuit Design Approach, Prashanthi Metku, Minsu Choi, Kyung Ki Kim, Yong Bin Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-Threshold null convention logic (MTNCL) is a novel low power paradigm for designing asynchronous null convention logic (NCL) circuits. To further reduce the dynamic power consumption, a new methodology that utilizes gate diffusion input technique is proposed. The proposed approach is used to realize MTNCL gates and a decrease in the transistor count is observed that tend to reduce the dynamic power consumption. Compared to SMTNCL approach, the proposed methodology shows a 5.6% is reduction in the power consumption for the MTNCL gates.

Structures made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) can be assembled using adhesive bonding. However, such bonding is prone to brittle delamination, and a method to improve delamination resistance is desirable. Here, we propose a technique to introduce crack-arrest features that increase the R-curve response by engineering the adhesive bond line/interface. We specifically designed a wavy net-like thermoplastic insert that was embedded into the thermoset adhesive bond line where the new mechanisms of energy dissipation were generated. We demonstrate that the technique is effective at improving mode I fracture toughness of secondary bonded carbon/epoxy by more than 400%. The hybrid thermoset/thermoplastic …

Fluctuations And Correlations Of Transmission Eigenchannels In Diffusive Media, Nicholas Bender, Alexey Yamilov, Hasan Yllmaz, Hui Cao Oct 2020

Fluctuations And Correlations Of Transmission Eigenchannels In Diffusive Media, Nicholas Bender, Alexey Yamilov, Hasan Yllmaz, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Selective excitation of a diffusive system's transmission eigenchannels enables manipulation of its internal energy distribution. The fluctuations and correlations of the eigenchannel's spatial profiles, however, remain unexplored so far. Here we show that the depth profiles of high-transmission eigenchannels exhibit low realization-to-realization fluctuations. Furthermore, our experimental and numerical studies reveal the existence of interchannel correlations, which are significant for low-transmission eigenchannels. Because high-transmission eigenchannels are robust and independent from other eigenchannels, they can reliably deliver energy deep inside turbid media.

Adaptive Multimodal Fusion For Facial Action Units Recognition, Huiyuan Yang, Taoyue Wang, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multimodal facial action units (AU) recognition aims to build models that are capable of processing, correlating, and integrating information from multiple modalities (i.e., 2D images from a visual sensor, 3D geometry from 3D imaging, and thermal images from an infrared sensor). Although the multimodal data can provide rich information, there are two challenges that have to be addressed when learning from multimodal data: 1) the model must capture the complex cross-modal interactions in order to utilize the additional and mutual information effectively; 2) the model must be robust enough in the circumstance of unexpected data corruptions during testing, in case …

Second-Harmonic Generation Of Structured Light By Transition-Metal Dichalcogenide Metasurfaces, Ling Ling Meng, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Tian Xia, Qin S. Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of integrated photovoltaic (PV) plants with energy storage systems (ESSs) has become an important research and development topic in recent times. In this context, a Multi-port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar (MARS) plant that integrates PV and ESS to alternating current transmission grid and high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link is studied in this paper. With penetration of power electronic based resources in the grid, the grid's capability to recover from frequency or voltage disturbances are reduced. Therefore, one of the vital objectives of any new grid integrated power electronic resource is to provide advanced control functions like voltage and frequency support …

The project selection process is a crucial step in sustainable development. Effective sustainable development depends on the ability to select the appropriate sustainable project to implement to ensure that the desired goals are met. Some of the most common characteristics or criteria used in evaluating sustainable projects include novelty, uncertainty, skill and experience, technology information transfer, and project cost. Prioritizing these criteria based on relative importance helps project managers and decision makers identify elements that require additional attention, better allocate resources, as well as improve the selection process when evaluating different sustainable project alternatives. The aim of this research is …

Asphalt cement will not last for a long time as the world encounters a diminishment in the crude oil. For sustainable, flexible pavement development, new resources can provide a contribution to replace it partially or entirely. In this study, asphalt was partially and entirely replaced by guayule resin as a bioresource by-product, extracted during the guayule natural rubber production. Crumb rubber modifier (CRM) was used as an asphalt enhancer. The Superpave grading system was followed at high, intermediate, and low temperatures to evaluate such innovative binder for rutting, fatigue, and thermal cracking, respectively, in addition to viscosity. Therefore, the original, …

Resilience Of School Systems Following Severe Earthquakes, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam N. Mahmoud, Bruce R. Ellingwood

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Natural disasters may have catastrophic and long-lasting impacts on communities' physical, economic, and social infrastructure. Slow recovery of educational services following such events is likely to cause traumatic stress in children, lead families to out-migrate, and affect the community's overall social stability. Methods for quantifying and assessing the restoration process of educational systems and their dependencies on other supporting infrastructure have not received adequate attention. This study introduces, for the first time, a new framework to evaluate the functionality, recovery, and resilience of a school system following severe earthquake events. The framework considers both the quantity and quality of education …

The IETF is currently defining the 6TiSCH architecture for the Industrial Internet of Things to ensure reliable and timely communication. 6TiSCH relies on the IEEE TSCH MAC protocol and defines different scheduling approaches for managing TSCH cells, including a distributed (neighbor-to-neighbor) scheduling scheme, where cells are allocated by nodes in a cooperative way. Each node leverages a Scheduling Function (SF) to compute the required number of cells, and the 6top (6P) protocol to negotiate them with neighbors. Currently, the Minimal Scheduling Function (MSF) is under consideration for standardization. However, multiple SFs are expected to be used in real deployments, in …

Efficient Column-Oriented Processing For Mutual Subspace Skyline Queries, Tao Jiang, Bin Zhang, Dan Lin, Yunjun Gao, Qing Li

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A mutual skyline query will enable some new applications, such as marketing analysis, task allocation, and personalized matching. Algorithms for efficient processing of this query have been recently proposed in the literature. Those approaches use the R-tree indexes and apply a series of pruning criteria toward efficient processing. However, they are characterized by several limitations: (1) they cannot process different interests on attributes for skyline and reverse skyline, (2) they require a multidimensional index, which suffers from performance degradation, especially in high-dimensional space, and (3) they do not support vertically decomposed data that is a natural and intuitive choice for …

A Novel Dual-Band Decoupling Technique, Min Li, Jamal Muhammad Yasir, Kwan Lawrence Yeung, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article presents a novel dual-band decoupling network (DN) to increase the isolation between two antennas. It is composed of two dual-band Wilkinson power dividers, four additional transmission lines (TLs), and two reactive components. The decoupling formulas are derived from systematic design procedures. Hence, the design parameters of the power divider, lengths of TLs, and reactance of reactive components can be precisely determined to realize high port isolation. Two benchmarks of the two-element symmetric and asymmetric monopole arrays are used to elaborate the design procedure and demonstrate the advantages of proposed DN. Results show that the proposed DN can offer …

A Novel Subdomain 2d/Q-2d Finite Element Method For Power/Ground Plate-Pair Analysis, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Min Tang, Yao Jiang Zhang, Shuai Xu, Hakan Bagc

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Upon excitation by a surface magnetic current, a power/ground plate-pair supports only TMz modes. This means that the magnetic field has only azimuthal components permitting a simple but effective domain decomposition method (DDM) to be used. In the proximity of an antipad, field interactions are rigorously modeled by a quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) finite element method (FEM) making use of three-dimensional (3D) triangular prism mesh elements. Since high-order TMz modes are confined in the close proximity of the antipad, field interactions in the region away from the antipad only involve the fundamental mode and are rigorously modeled by a 2D FEM. This …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach is presented for power integrity analysis on multi-layer printed circuit boards in this paper. Two critical current paths are analyzed. Inductance decomposition is applied to identify the critical parameters that can influence the PDN input impedance. Two types of stack-ups are used to perform sensitivity analysis to illustrate the effectiveness of PDN design guidelines. Based on the analysis of the inductance contribution from different blocks in the PCB PDN, a systematic approach to obtain a complete understanding of PDN behavior is proposed. The approach can be used to provide design guidance in PDN design practice.

Apocalypticism is a powerful brew of eschatological belief and political imagination that is extremely persuasive. This article addresses the intersections between apocalyptic rhetoric and the technical communication of risk, disease outbreak, and disaster preparedness by analyzing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's zombie apocalypse preparedness campaign. Specifically, I argue that the framing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's campaign relies on and extends problematic iterations of apocalypticism and undermines the educational objectives of disaster preparedness and response. I conclude with suggestions for how technical communicators designing public awareness and outreach campaigns can use existential risk rhetoric for …
