Behavioral Science Can Increase Zipper Merge Usage, Maria Galbraith
Behavioral Science Can Increase Zipper Merge Usage, Maria Galbraith
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Research demonstrates that zipper merges (or late merges), under heavy traffic conditions, are safer and faster than a traditional early merge. In implementation, zipper merges can be less efficient due to a lack of compliance on the part of drivers, often more accustomed to early merging. Behavioral science has been applied to a many transportation-related challenges, such as increasing seat belt usage and decreasing drinking and driving but has not yet been applied to the zipper merge. We have identified six relevant behavioral science strategies including (1) social norms, (2) appeals to reason, (3) emotional appeals, (4) humor, (5) memory …
Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger
Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
An ideal battery model must gather sufficient electrochemical data about the system while remaining being computationally efficient. To prevent failure from thermal runaway, understanding the thermal characteristics of a battery is essential.
To achieve this, we have developed a single particle (SP) model, a simplified but accurate approach to battery modeling, and compared this to a previously designed 3D model. After validating the battery electrochemistry, equations were introduced to calculate the heat generation with a coupled 3D heat transfer component to provide data on the cell temperature. This same model was used to simulate a multi-cell pack.
The results indicate …
A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson
A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
From 1972 to 2020, the progressive wing of the Democratic party has evolved and adapted to follow a changing American society that looks drastically different today than the one that overwhelmingly rejected George McGovern in 1972 in favor of President Nixon. From being blamed for dragging down Democratic candidates through the 1970s and '80s to being sidelined by the "New Democrat" movement headlined by President's Clinton and Obama to resurging back into popularity in 2016 led by Bernard "Bernie" Sander's run for the Democratic nomination, the movement is now as strong as ever. This research looks at how progressives within …
Chemically Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation, Megan Sly
Chemically Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation, Megan Sly
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, the excitation of nuclear spins is used to generate spectra of radiofrequency resonance signals. The signal frequencies are typically used to determine the structure of chemical compounds, while the relaxation of the spins to thermodynamic equilibrium provides useful information about the molecular vicinity of a material. When a chemical compound occurs in different molecular environments, a single resonance signal can have multiple relaxation times. To quantify how much material is in how many different environments, a multi-exponential analysis was developed resolving resonance signals and relaxation times in two-dimensional contour plots. Samples of known resonance …
Analysis Of An Integral Metric On Hyperspaces, Darren Schmidt
Analysis Of An Integral Metric On Hyperspaces, Darren Schmidt
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
In this paper, we will be investigating how to compute the integral distance defined by Dr. Insall and Dr. Charatonik, and we will analyze the results from this computation. We develop a way to compute the integral distance by using Monte-Carlo Integration, and we analyze the time complexity and the error that results from this method of computation. We also investigate when this distance function is a metric, and how this metric compares to some other common metrics.
Effect Of Magnetic Moment On Thermal Conductivity, Anthony Lonsdale
Effect Of Magnetic Moment On Thermal Conductivity, Anthony Lonsdale
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Insulating non-magnetic solids conduct heat through the lattice vibrations, also colloquially known as phonons. However, in magnetic solids, additional channel for the heat transport is available through the interaction of magnetic moments with each-other. On the other hand, lattice vibrations couple with the magnetic moments on the atoms and thus provide additional resistance to the heat flow. Currently, there is no complete understanding of the magnitudes of these contributions and the overall effect of the magnetic contribution is largely unknown. Using a combination of spin dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we simulated the contribution of the magnetic subsystem to the …
Machine Learning Optimizes A Survey Of Dark Energy, Steven Karst
Machine Learning Optimizes A Survey Of Dark Energy, Steven Karst
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Measuring the history of cosmic expansion via the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale from a three-dimensional galaxy map is a well established technique to probe the nature of dark energy. In fact, a forthcoming galaxy redshift survey, the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), is designed mainly for this purpose. An essential optimization problem in such galaxy redshift surveys is the target selection. Namely, it is not clear how we should select our targets to maximize the number of galaxies which provide successful redshift measurement in a desired cosmic epoch, while avoiding other galaxies. Taking PFS as an example, we apply …
Amorphous Carbon Aerogels From Xerogel Powders, Daniel Greenan
Amorphous Carbon Aerogels From Xerogel Powders, Daniel Greenan
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Carbon aerogels are well known for their high surface areas and high porosities. Their applications have been demonstrated in a wide range of areas such as CO2 capture, electrodes for electrochemical cells, etc. They are typically made from pyrolysis of carbonizable polymeric aerogels, which in turn are synthesized via sol-gel methods. Preparation of those polymeric aerogels involves supercritical fluid drying of wet-gels by replacing the pore-filling solvent with liquid CO2 that can be vented off as a gas, thus allowing pores to retain their shape and size. In contrast, here a new alternative route is proposed for the synthesis of …
The Effect Of Irradiating Aln On Its Dielectric Properties, Sean Anderson
The Effect Of Irradiating Aln On Its Dielectric Properties, Sean Anderson
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Aluminum Nitride is an active element of sensors that monitor the performance and well-being of the nuclear reactors due to its piezoelectric properties. Yet, the variations of its properties under irradiation are largely unexplored. Here, we report the results of the molecular dynamics simulations of the structural changes in AlN under irradiation via the knock-on atom technique. By creating and evolving the irradiation cascades due to energetic particle interaction with the atom of the crystalline lattice we determine the rate of the defect production as a function of the deposited energy. Further, we determine a displacement energy, a key characteristic …

We Unravel The Many-Body Dynamics Of A Harmonically Trapped Impurity Colliding With A Bosonic Medium Confined In A Double Well Upon Quenching The Initially Displaced Harmonic Trap To The Center Of The Double Well. We Reveal That The Emerging Correlation Dynamics Crucially Depends On The Impurity-Medium Interaction Strength Allowing For A Classification Into Different Dynamical Response Regimes. For Strong Attractive Impurity-Medium Couplings The Impurity Is Bound To The Bosonic Bath, While For Intermediate Attractions It Undergoes An Effective Tunneling. In The Case Of Weak Attractive Or Repulsive Couplings The Impurity Penetrates The Bosonic Bath And Performs A Dissipative Oscillatory Motion. …

Effects Of Acetylene Addition To The Fuel Stream On Soot Formation And Flame Properties In An Axisymmetric Laminar Coflow Ethylene/Air Diffusion Flame, Xinrong Xie, Shu Zheng, Ran Sui, Zixue Luo, Shi Liu, Jean Louis Consalvi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of adding acetylene to the fuel stream on soot formation and flame properties were investigated numerically in a laminar axisymmetric coflow ethylene/air diffusion flame using the open-source flame code Co-Flame in conjunction with an elementary gas-phase chemistry scheme and detailed transport and thermodynamic database. Radiation heat transfer of the radiating gases (H2O, C2H2, CO, and CO2) and soot was calculated using a statistical narrow-band correlated-k-based wide band model coupled with the discrete-ordinates method. The soot formation was described by the consecutive steps of soot nucleation, surface growth of soot particles via polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-soot condensation or the …

Enantioselective Nickel-Catalyzed Alkyne-Azide Cycloaddition By Dynamic Kinetic Resolution, En Chih Liu, Joseph J. Topczewski
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The triazole heterocycle has been widely adopted as an isostere for the amide bond. Many native amides are α-chiral, being derived from amino acids. This makes α-N-chiral triazoles attractive building blocks. This report describes the first enantioselective triazole synthesis that proceeds via nickel-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (NiAAC). This dynamic kinetic resolution is enabled by a spontaneous [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the allylic azide. The 1,4,5-trisubstituted triazole products, derived from internal alkynes, are complementary to those commonly obtained by the related CuAAC reaction. Initial mechanistic experiments indicate that the NiAAC reaction proceeds through a monometallic Ni complex, which is distinct from the CuAAC …

Edge-State Critical Behavior Of The Integer Quantum Hall Transition, Martin Puschmann, Philipp Cain, Michael Schreiber, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The integer quantum Hall effect features a paradigmatic quantum phase transition. Despite decades of work, experimental, numerical, and analytical studies have yet to agree on a unified understanding of the critical behavior. Based on a numerical Green function approach, we consider the quantum Hall transition in a microscopic model of non-interacting disordered electrons on a simple square lattice. In a strip geometry, topologically induced edge states extend along the system rim and undergo localization–delocalization transitions as function of energy. We investigate the boundary critical behavior in the lowest Landau band and compare it with a recent tight-binding approach to the …

Poplar remediation systems are ideal for reducing runoff, cleaning groundwater, and delivering ecosystem services to the North American Great Lakes and globally. We used phytorecurrent selection (PRS) to establish sixteen phytoremediation buffer systems (phyto buffers) (buffer groups: 2017 × 6; 2018 × 5; 2019 × 5) throughout the Lake Superior and Lake Michigan watersheds comprised of twelve PRS-selected clones each year. We tested for differences in genotypes, environments, and their interactions for health, height, diameter, and volume from ages one to four years. All trees had optimal health. Mean first-, second-, and third-year volume ranged from 71 ± 26 to …

Abnormal meal timing, like skipping breakfast and late-night snacking, is associated with obesity in humans. Disruption of daily eating rhythms also contributes to obesity in mice. When fed a high-fat diet, male C57BL/6J mice have disrupted eating behavior rhythms and they become obese. In contrast to obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice, some inbred strains of mice are resistant to high-fat diet-induced obesity. In this study, we sought to determine whether there are distinct effects of high-fat feeding on daily eating behavior rhythms in obesity-prone and obesity-resistant male mice. Male obesity-prone (C57BL/6J and 129X1/SvJ) and obesity-resistant (SWR/J and BALB/cJ) mice were fed low-fat …

This article presents a novel and simple decoupling method to increase the isolation between two closely spaced patch antennas sharing a common thick substrate. The decoupling can be simply realized by adding a pure dielectric block (DB) above the coupled array. By means of DB to modify the space permittivity (propagation constant), the space-wave coupling can be controlled to cancel surface-wave coupling for isolation enhancement. Five benchmarks of combinations of two patch antennas with different positions or orientations are investigated to validate the decoupling concept and elaborate on the design procedure. The results show that the proposed method could provide …

To discern spatial and explore possible existence of temporal variations of upper crustal anisotropy in an ∼15 km section of the San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ) that is composed of the Buck Ridge and Clark faults in southern California, we conduct a systematic shear wave splitting investigation using local S-wave data recorded by three broadband seismic stations located near the surface expression of the SJFZ. An automatic data selection and splitting measurement procedure is first applied, and the resulting splitting measurements are then manually screened to ensure reliability of the results. Strong spatial variations in crustal anisotropy are revealed by …
