A Control Oriented Comprehensive Degradation Model For Battery Energy Storage System Life Prediction, Yaqi Zhu, Tazdik Plateau, Brody Riemann, Robert Landers, Jonghyun Park

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to ensure that stationary battery energy storage systems (BESSs) provide reliable energy buffering, both for power quality and economic purposes, the degradation must be considered. Cell degradation involves various side reactions and is highly dependent on its operating conditions. To accurately track cell degradation and predict its impact on battery behavior, a comprehensive physics-based degradation model based on an electrolyte phase-enhanced single particle (SP) model is developed. Key degradation physics, namely solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formation and growth, Li plating on the graphite anode, and Mn dissolution on cathode of nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (NMC622) are considered. The model …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The joining of dissimilar materials is becoming increasingly prevalent to integrate different material properties to enhance design flexibility and overall performance. This study introduced an innovative approach to additively manufacture copper on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) via Inconel 718 interlayers using directed energy deposition (DED). The novel multi-material structure was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The microstructure, tensile properties, microhardness, and thermal performance of the structure were characterized. Residual stress distribution over the structure was revealed by experimental-validated numerical modeling. The result exhibits that defect-free structures with excellent interfacial bonding can be achieved by introducing Inconel 718 interlayers. The bonding …

Dc Bus Voltage Selection For A Grid-Connected Low-Voltage Dc Residential Nanogrid Using Real Data With Modified Load Profiles, Saeed Habibi, Ramin Rahimi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Pourya Shamsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study examines various low voltage levels applied to a direct current residential nanogrid (DC-RNG) with respect to the efficiency and component cost of the system. Due to the significant increase in DC-compatible loads, on-site Photovoltaic (PV) generation, and local battery storage, DC distribution has gained considerable attention in buildings. To provide an accurate evaluation of the DC-RNG's efficiency and component cost, a one-year load profile of a conventional AC-powered house is considered, and AC appliances' load profiles are scaled to their equivalent available DC appliances. Based on the modified load profiles, proper wiring schemes, converters, and protection devices are …

A Novel Reduced-Order Method For Analysis Of Hyperspectral Images, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang Oct 2021

A Novel Reduced-Order Method For Analysis Of Hyperspectral Images, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hyperspectral imaging technology has been broadly applied in remote sensing because it collects echoed signals from across the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum and provides fruitfully helpful information. However, the processing or transformation of high-data-volume hyperspectral images, also viewed as snapshots varying with the EM spectrum, burdens the hardware resources, especially for the high spectral resolution and spatial resolution cases. To tackle this challenge, a novel reduced-order method based on the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) algorithm is presented here to analyze hyperspectral images. The method decomposes the spatial-spectral hyperspectral images in terms of spatial dynamic modes and corresponding spectral patterns. Then, these …

Faster Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment Based On 1d Convolutional Neural Networks, Xinzhe Yuan, Dustin Tanksley, Liujun Li, Haibin Zhang, Genda Chen, Donald C. Wunsch

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Contemporary deep learning approaches for post-earthquake damage assessments based on 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) require encoding of ground motion records to transform their inherent 1D time series to 2D images, thus requiring high computing time and resources. This study develops a 1D CNN model to avoid the costly 2D image encoding. The 1D CNN model is compared with a 2D CNN model with wavelet transform encoding and a feedforward neural network (FNN) model to evaluate prediction performance and computational efficiency. A case study of a benchmark reinforced concrete (r/c) building indicated that the 1D CNN model achieved a prediction …

Systematic Evaluation Of A Novel Self-Healing Poly(Acrylamide-Co-Vinyl Acetate)/Alginate Polymer Gel For Fluid Flow Control In High Temperature And High Salinity Reservoirs, Jingyang Pu, Baojun Bai, Thomas P. Schuman

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Preferential fluid flow often occurs when water and CO2 is injected into mature oilfields, sig-nificantly reducing their injection efficiency. Particle gels have been evaluated and applied to control the short circulation problems. This study systematically investigated a novel poly(acrylamide-co-vinyl acetate)/alginate-based interpenetrated gel system (Alg-IPNG) which is designed to control the preferential fluid flow problems in high-temperature reservoirs. Chromium acetate was incorporated into the gel system to provide the delayed crosslinking feature of the particle gels. The alginate polymer system can also take advantage of the Ca2+ ions in the formation water, which exist in most reservoirs, to reinforce …

Pairing Experimental And Mathematical Modeling Studies On Fluidized Beds For Enhancement Of Models Predictive Quality: A Current Status Overview, Sebastián Uribe, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan Oct 2021

Pairing Experimental And Mathematical Modeling Studies On Fluidized Beds For Enhancement Of Models Predictive Quality: A Current Status Overview, Sebastián Uribe, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modeling of gas-solid fluidized systems has been a prevailing challenge over the last few decades. With different approaches and implementing different sub-models to capture the essential multiphase and multiscale phenomena in these systems, major advances have been achieved, even though most models are only subject to a practical validation of macroscopic parameters. The current description of fluidized beds through mathematical models relies on the inclusion of vast sub-models, leading to an unquantifiable degree of uncertainty on the models' applicability for extrapolation studies. Furthermore, each closure and fitting parameter in the model represents a possible source of deviation, and their optimization, …

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have a wide range of applications but face challenges in harsh working or operating environments at high temperatures. In this work, a solid polymer electrolyte with MWCNT-COOH as an additive (MWCNT-SPE) was obtained. MWCNT-SPE has a high thermal stability and can be used in high-temperature operating environments. Solid-state lithium batteries based on MWCNT-SPE and LiFePO4 were assembled. The resulting lithium batteries exhibited excellent electrochemical properties at 70 and 120 °C, demonstrating a wide range of operations suitable for solid-state batteries with extreme demands. The symmetrical Li/MWCNT-SPE/Li cell operated for 1800 h with low polarization voltage …

Nonvolatile Resistive Switching Memory Based On Monosaccharide Fructose Film, Yuan Xing, Brandon Sueoka, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we report resistive random-access memory (RRAM) based on a monosaccharide—fructose for nonvolatile memory in biocompatible and "green" electronics. Fructose thin film acts as the resistive switching layer with Al and Ag top electrodes for comparison. Both devices demonstrated highly reproducible nonvolatile bipolar resistive switching behaviors with a large on/off ratio of ∼106 for the Al electrode and ∼105 for the Ag electrode. The forming voltage, set voltage, and memory window are also larger for the Al electrode than the Ag electrode, but the reset voltages are comparable. Dominant conduction mechanisms of fructose films were proposed. …

Trans∗Vulnerability And Digital Research Ethics: A Qubit Ethical Analysis Of Transparency Activism, Avery C. Edenfield, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trans communities across the United States are under assault. Researchers seeking to work with trans people and other multiply marginalized and underrepresented communities must attend to ethical research practices within the communities in which they participate. Digital research ethics is particularly murky with issues of embodiment, vulnerability, and unclear IRB guidance. Comparing two transparency activist organizations-Wikileaks and DDoSecrets-we introduce "qubit ethics," a trans material, trans-corporeal ethics of care as praxis within vulnerable online communities. We then demonstrate how this unique approach to research design allows for the complex entanglements that is trans life, particularly digital life. Finally, we present clear …

Towards Generalizable Network Anomaly Detection Models, Md Arifuzzaman, Shafkat Islam, Engin Arslan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finding the root causes of network performance anomalies is critical to satisfy the quality-of-service requirements. In this paper, we introduce machine learning (ML) models to process TCP socket statistics to pinpoint underlying reasons of performance issues such as packet loss and jitter. More importantly, we introduce a novel feature engineering method to transform network-dependent metrics (e.g., total packet count and round-trip time) in training datasets into network independent forms to be able to transfer the models to new network settings without requiring retraining them. Experimental results in various network settings show that the proposed feature engineering approach improves the performance …

Machine Learning For High-Fidelity Prediction Of Cement Hydration Kinetics In Blended Systems, Rachel Cook, Taihao Han, Alaina Childers, Cambria Ryckman, Kamal Khayat, Hongyan Ma, Jie Huang, Aditya Kumar

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the most broadly utilized man-made material, has been scrutinized due to its contributions to global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Thus -- to mitigate CO2 emissions -- mineral additives have been promulgated as partial replacements for OPC. However, additives -- depending on their physiochemical characteristics -- can exert varying effects on OPC's hydration kinetics. Therefore -- in regards to more complex systems -- it is infeasible for semi-empirical kinetic models to reveal the underlying nonlinear composition-property (i.e., reactivity) relationships. In the past decade or so, machine learning (ML) has arisen as a promising, …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gas-enhanced oil recovery is one of the most advantageous enhanced oil recovery methods. Nitrogen is one of the most investigated gases because of its beneficial properties. However, during its interaction with crude oil, nitrogen can induce asphaltene deposition, which may result in severe formation damage and pore plugging. Few works have investigated the impact of nitrogen on asphaltene instability. This research studied the immiscibility conditions for nitrogen in nanopores and the impact of nitrogen on asphaltene precipitations, which could lead to plugging pores and oil recovery reduction. A slimtube was used to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of nitrogen …

We report the discovery of an ultrahigh-energy (UHE) gamma-ray source, LHAASO J2108+5157, by analyzing the LHAASO-KM2A data of 308.33 live days. A significant excess of gamma ray-induced showers is observed in both energy bands of 25-100 and >100 TeV with 9.5σ and 8.5σ, respectively. This source is not significantly favored as an extended source with an angular extension smaller than the point-spread function of KM2A. The measured energy spectrum from 20 to 200 TeV can be approximately described by a power-law function with an index of-2.83 ± 0.18stat. A harder spectrum is demanded at lower energies considering the flux upper …

In additive manufacturing (AM), the surface roughness of the deposited parts remains significantly higher than the admissible range for most applications. Additionally, the surface topography of AM parts exhibits waviness profiles between tracks and layers. Therefore, post-processing is indispensable to improve surface quality. Laser-aided machining and polishing can be effective surface improvement processes that can be used due to their availability as the primary energy sources in many metal AM processes. While the initial roughness and waviness of the surface of most AM parts are very high, to achieve dimensional accuracy and minimize roughness, a high input energy density is …

Coupled Flexural‐Electrical Evaluation Of Additively Manufactured Multifunctional Composites At Ambient Temperature, Ritesh Ghimire, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multifunctional composites offer a higher strength to weight ratio, electrical properties, etc., thereby providing possible solutions for replacing the physical electrical wirings in aircraft. The lack of research on the coupled multifunctional characterization of 3D printed composites flexural-electrical properties is the main reason for its unsuitability in aerospace applications. The proposed method evaluates multifunctional flexural‐electrical properties of 3D printed multifunctional carbon fiber composites. Traditional methods for conducting structural and electrical analyses for aircraft certification do not accommodate new technologies that are not yet proven. With the demand for conformance control in carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding fields, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide-chromium [HPAM-Cr (III)] polymer gel has been applied in fields for CO2 conformance control. However, the field application results are mixed with success and failure. This paper is intended to understand the HPAM-Cr (III) polymer gel plugging performance in CO2 flooding reservoirs through laboratory experiments and numerical analysis. We conducted core flooding tests to understand how the cycles of CO2 and water affect the HPAM-Cr (III) polymer gel plugging efficiency to CO2 and water during a water-alternating-gas (WAG) process. Berea Sandstone …

The measurement of gas flow rates is of great importance in a wide range of modern technologies. This paper introduces a simple, yet accurate technique for in-house calibration of gas FMs (mass and volumetric) even under harsh environmental conditions such as encountered during field measurement campaigns. The method requires only readily available, low cost components: a vessel of known volume, an air pump, a pressure sensor and a metal plate orifice or a needle valve to act as a CO. The unique property of choked flow in the CO is used here for flow calibration. In the method presented here …

Antibiotic resistance has become a worldwide public health threat due to the rapid evolu-tion and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. CCG-211790 is a novel anti-virulence compound that does not kill bacteria but could ameliorate human diseases by inhibiting expression of virulence factors, thereby applying less selection pressure for antibiotic resistance. However, its potential clinical use is restricted because of its poor aqueous solubility, resulting in formulation challenges. Nanosuspension technology is an effective way to circumvent this problem. Nanosuspensions of CCG-211790 with two different particle sizes, NanoA (315 ± 6 nm) and NanoB (915 ± 24 nm), were prepared using an antisolvent …

The slow accumulation of inflammatory biomarker levels in the body—also known as inflammation—has been linked to a myriad of age-related diseases. Some of these include neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease, obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and many others. Though a direct correlation has not been established, research connecting age-related hearing loss (ARHL)—the number one communication disorder and one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases of our aged population—and inflammation has gained interest. Research, thus far, has found that inflammatory markers, such as IL-6 and white blood cells, are associated with ARHL in humans and animals. Moreover, studies investigating …

Regional delivery of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells in glioblastoma represents a rational therapeutic approach as an alternative to intravenous administration to avoid the blood-brain barrier impediment. Here, we developed a fibrin gel that accommodates CAR-T cell loading and promotes their gradual release. Using a model of subtotal glioblastoma resection, we demonstrated that the fibrin-based gel delivery of CAR-T cells within the surgical cavity enables superior antitumor activity compared to CAR-T cells directly inoculated into the tumor resection cavity.
