Correct numerical simulation is of major importance to the optimization design and prediction of a successful gel treatment. However, there exist many problems in current simulation studies in published literature. This paper first presents a comprehensive review on the major factors that have been considered at different gelation stages during gel treatment, the models used in the commercial/in-house simulators, and current numerical simulation studies on both laboratory and field scales. Then we classify the current in-situ gel numerical simulation problems as 1, deficient …

Vacancy-Induced Enhancement Of Electron-Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Its Relationship To The Two-Temperature Model, Salah Al Smairat, Joseph T. Graham Sep 2021

Vacancy-Induced Enhancement Of Electron-Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Its Relationship To The Two-Temperature Model, Salah Al Smairat, Joseph T. Graham

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electron-phonon coupling factor was calculated for both pristine and vacancy-rich 3C-SiC. Ab initio calculations were performed within the framework of the density functional perturbation theory. Wannier functions were used to interpolate eigenvalues into denser grids through the electron-phonon using Wannier code. The coupling factor was determined through calculations of the electron self-energy, electron-phonon relaxation time, and electronic specific heat. These parameters were extrapolated to high temperatures using a hybrid model which mixes band calculations for electrons below an energy cutoff with the free electron gas model for electrons above the energy cutoff. The electron relaxation times, specific heats, electron …

Characterization Of A Nitro-Forming Enzyme Involved In Fosfazinomycin Biosynthesis, Hannah Valentino, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

N-hydroxylating monooxygenases (NMOs) are a subclass of flavin-dependent enzymes that hydroxylate nitrogen atoms. Recently, unique NMOs that perform multiple reactions on one substrate molecule have been identified. Fosfazinomycin M (FzmM) is one such NMO, forming nitrosuccinate from aspartate (Asp) in the fosfazinomycin biosynthetic pathway in someStreptomycessp. This work details the biochemical and kinetic analysis of FzmM. Steady-state kinetic investigation shows that FzmM performs a coupled reaction with Asp (kcat, 3.0 ± 0.01 s-1) forming nitrosuccinate, which can be converted to fumarate and nitrite by the action of FzmL. FzmM displays a 70-fold higherkcat/KMvalue for NADPH compared to NADH and has …

In order to explore the effect of the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone of the surfactant on its diffusion characteristics on the surface of anthracite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and the four isomers (m-C16, m = 2,4,6,8; m represents the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone) of sodium hexadecyl benzene sulfonate (SHS) were selected. Binary models of surfactant/anthracite, surfactant/graphene modified by oxygen-containing functional groups, and a ternary model of water/surfactant/anthracite were constructed. By analyzing a series of properties such as interaction energy, contact surface area, relative concentration distribution, radial distribution …

This paper investigated the effects of fiber clustering on fatigue behavior of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams with reinforcements by experimental and numerical analysis. The steel fiber volume fractions of beams were 0 vol%, 0.5 vol%, 1.0 vol%, and 1.5 vol%. One beam was tested under static loading, and eight beams under fatigue loading with different stress levels. Moreover, the fiber distribution in the cross section of concrete was experimentally characterized to understand the underlying mechanism. The results indicated that the fatigue life of beam increased with increasing fiber volume fraction from 0 to 1.0 vol% and decreased from 1.0 vol% …

Residential Photovoltaics Adopters Versus Considerers In The United States, Mahelet Fikru Sep 2021

Residential Photovoltaics Adopters Versus Considerers In The United States, Mahelet Fikru

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite rising interest in residential photovoltaics (PV), the percentage of homeowners who have installed them remains low. This study seeks to understand systematic behavioral differences between PV adopters and PV considerers. PV considerers have talked to an installer but have not yet installed PV. Our results suggest that, compared to adopters, considerers have a lower degree of risk aversion, higher scores in terms of pro-environmental norms, and higher levels of novelty seeking and independent decision making.

Energy Dissipation Using Negative Stiffness Shells, Mohamed Elgawady, Yasser Darwish Sep 2021

Energy Dissipation Using Negative Stiffness Shells, Mohamed Elgawady, Yasser Darwish

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A negative stiffness shell has a convex first position, but can transition or snap to a concave second position under a force applied to the exterior surface of the shell in the convex first position. During the transition, the shell exhibits negative stiffness that permits a large amount of energy to be absorbed. The negative stiffness shell can withstand a high initial force threshold prior to transitioning. In the second, concave position the shell can still resist force. Moreover, it is possible for the shell to revert back to the first, convex position with minimal plastic deformation for subsequent use. …

Reproductive Aging In Caenorhabditis Elegans: From Molecules To Ecology, Andrea Scharf, Franziska Pohl, Brian M. Egan, Zuzana Kocsisova, Kerry Kornfeld

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aging animals display a broad range of progressive degenerative changes, and one of the most fascinating is the decline of female reproductive function. In the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, hermaphrodites reach a peak of progeny production on day 2 of adulthood and then display a rapid decline; progeny production typically ends by day 8 of adulthood. Since animals typically survive until day 15 of adulthood, there is a substantial post reproductive lifespan. Here we review the molecular and cellular changes that occur during reproductive aging, including reductions in stem cell number and activity, slowing meiotic progression, diminished Notch signaling, and …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: The use of blood biomarkers after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been widely studied. We have identified eight unresolved issues related to the use of five commonly investigated blood biomarkers: neurofilament light chain, ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase-L1, tau, S100B, and glial acidic fibrillary protein. We conducted a focused literature review of unresolved issues in three areas: mode of entry into and exit from the blood, kinetics of blood biomarkers in the blood, and predictive capacity of the blood biomarkers after mTBI.

Findings: Although a disruption of the blood brain barrier has been demonstrated in mild and severe traumatic brain …

Today, Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Big Data analytics and mobile technologies, are forcing firms to seek new ways to create and deliver customer value. We argue that the Android project, one of the most successful open-source digital platforms, reflects a new business model in the age of digital transformation. In the Android community, application developers create and sell applications for the Android operating system provided by the open-source firm (Google), and share the profit with Google. Such an open-source strategy forces the open-source firm to give up the profits from selling the operating system to customers. A firm generally …

The Wide Field-of-View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) and the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) of LHAASO are designed to work in combination for measuring the energy spectra of the cosmic ray species over a very wide energy range from a few TeV to 10 PeV. The energy calibration can be achieved with a proven technique of measuring the westward shift of the Moon shadow cast by galactic cosmic rays due to the geomagnetic field. This deflection angle Δ is inversely proportional to the cosmic ray rigidity. The precise measurement of the shifts by WCDA allows us to calibrate its energy …

Evolutionary Algorithm-Based Adaptive Robust Optimization For Ac Security Constrained Unit Commitment Considering Renewable Energy Sources And Shunt Facts Devices, Aliasghar Baziar, Rui Bo, Misagh Dehghani Ghotbabadi, Mehdi Veisi, Waqas Ur Rehman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An AC security constrained unit commitment (AC-SCUC) in the presence of the renewable energy sources (RESs) and shunt flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices is conventionally modeled as a deterministic optimization problem to minimize the operation cost of conventional generation units (CGUs) subject to AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF) equations, operation constraints of RESs, shunt FACTS devices, and CGUs. To cope with the uncertainties of load and RES generation, robust and stochastic optimization and linearized formulation have been used to achieve a sub-optimal solution. To arrive at a more optimal solution, an evolutionary algorithm-based adaptive robust optimization (EA-ARO) approach to …

Conservative Unconditionally Stable Decoupled Numerical Schemes For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq System, Wenbin Chen, Daozhi Han, Xiaoming Wang, Yichao Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose two mass and heat energy conservative, unconditionally stable, decoupled numerical algorithms for solving the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq system that models thermal convection of two-phase flows in superposed free flow and porous media. The schemes totally decouple the computation of the Cahn-Hilliard equation, the Darcy equations, the heat equation, the Navier-Stokes equations at each time step, and thus significantly reducing the computational cost. We rigorously show that the schemes are conservative and energy-law preserving. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the algorithms.

Relationships between biodiversity and multiple ecosystem functions (that is, ecosystem multifunctionality) are context-dependent. Both plant and soil microbial diversity have been reported to regulate ecosystem multifunctionality, but how their relative importance varies along environmental gradients remains poorly understood. Here, we relate plant and microbial diversity to soil multifunctionality across 130 dryland sites along a 4,000 km aridity gradient in northern China. Our results show a strong positive association between plant species richness and soil multifunctionality in less arid regions, whereas microbial diversity, in particular of fungi, is positively associated with multifunctionality in more arid regions. This shift in the relationships …

Purely financial players without any physical assets can participate in day-Ahead electricity markets as virtual bidders. They can arbitrage the price difference between day-Ahead (DA) and real-Time (RT) markets to maximize profits. Virtual bidders encounter various monetary risks and uncertainties in their decision-making due to the high volatility of the price difference. Therefore, this paper proposes a max-min two-level optimization model to derive the optimal bidding strategy of virtual bidders. In this model, the risks of uncertainties associated with the rivals' strategies and RT market prices are managed by robust optimization. The proposed max-min two-level model is turned into a …

Currently, light-based three-dimensional (3D) printing with submicron features is mainly developed based on photosensitive polymers or inorganic-polymer composite materials. To eliminate polymer/organic additives, a strategy for direct 3D assembly and printing of metallic nanocrystals without additives is presented. Ultrafast laser with intensity in the range of 1 x 1010 to 1 x 1012 W/cm2 is used to nonequilibrium heat nanocrystals and induce ligand transformation, which triggers the spontaneous fusion and localized assembly of nanocrystals. The process is due to the operation of hot electrons as confirmed by a strong dependence of the printing rate on laser pulse duration varied in …
