Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Abstract: A study was conducted to uncover the possible correlations among mechanical and index properties of sandstones from formations of Salt Range area, Punjab, Pakistan. For this purpose, sandstone block samples were collected from seven formations of the Salt Range. The samples were prepared for rock testing according to the guidelines set by International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM). Defective samples were discarded and those meeting the ISRM specifications were tested for sonic velocities, dry density, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic constants. Results obtained were then statistically analyzed to find the predictive relationships. The analysis revealed that …

Extracellular Matrix-Mimetic Hydrogels For Treating Neural Tissue Injury: A Focus On Fibrin, Hyaluronic Acid, And Elastin-Like Polypeptide Hydrogels, Derek W. Nelson, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neurological and functional recovery is limited following central nervous system injury and severe injury to the peripheral nervous system. Extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetic hydrogels are of particular interest as regenerative scaffolds for the injured nervous system as they provide 3D bioactive interfaces that modulate cellular response to the injury environment and provide naturally degradable scaffolding for effective tissue remodeling. In this review, three unique ECM-mimetic hydrogels used in models of neural injury are reviewed: fibrin hydrogels, which rely on a naturally occurring enzymatic gelation, hyaluronic acid hydrogels, which require chemical modification prior to chemical crosslinking, and elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) hydrogels, which …

Experimental Investigation Of Additive Manufacturing Of Continuous Carbon Fiber Composites With Multifunctional Electro-Tensile Properties, Ritesh Ghimire, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Manufacturing processes for monofunctional and multifunctional materials vary depending on the design optimization. Multifunctional continuous carbon fiber composites provide great potential in achieving coupled structural and electrical properties for their applications in aircraft, unmanned aircraft systems, and spacecraft. Proper optimization of tensile and electrical properties offers benefits early in the design and continuous operational safety phases to obtain coupled multifunctional properties. In this paper, fused filament fabrication additive manufacturing (AM) technique was used to fabricate continuous carbon fiber solid laminated composites test coupons. The proposed new method characterizes the electrical conductivity's coupled effects on the tensile properties, including the failure …

The construction of catalogues of a particular type of galaxy can be complicated by interlopers contaminating the sample. In spectroscopic galaxy surveys this can be due to the misclassification of an emission line; for example in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) low-redshift [O ii] emitters may make up a few per cent of the observed Ly α emitter (LAE) sample. The presence of contaminants affects the measured correlation functions and power spectra. Previous attempts to deal with this using the cross-correlation function have assumed sources at a fixed redshift, or not modelled evolution within the adopted redshift bins. …

Numerical Study Of Graphene/Au/Sic Waveguide-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Wei Du, Lucas Miller, Feng Zhao Nov 2021

Numerical Study Of Graphene/Au/Sic Waveguide-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Wei Du, Lucas Miller, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new waveguide-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was proposed and investigated by numerical simulation. The sensor consists of a graphene cover layer, a gold (Au) thin film, and a silicon carbide (SiC) waveguide layer on a silicon dioxide/silicon (SiO2 /Si) substrate. The large bandgap energy of SiC allows the sensor to operate in the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges, which effectively reduces the light absorption in water to improve the sensitivity. The sensor was characterized by comparing the shift of the resonance wavelength peak with change of the refractive index (RI), which mimics the change of analyte concentration …

Construction Of Spatial Filtering Matrices For Norm-Optimal Ilc In Single Point Incremental Forming, Joseph D. Fischer, Mitchell R. Woodside, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers Nov 2021

Construction Of Spatial Filtering Matrices For Norm-Optimal Ilc In Single Point Incremental Forming, Joseph D. Fischer, Mitchell R. Woodside, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is a control technique used to improve performance in repetitive processes. ILC has grown in popularity in part due to its ease of implementation and ability to achieve high levels of accuracy even in complex nonlinear systems. However, a fundamental limitation of ILC is that it relies on system repetition, making the impact of non-repetitive disturbances (e.g., noise) on the controller's performance severe. Much work has been done to reject noise in the time domain; however, little has been done to address noise which is spatial in nature. In this work, a method for limiting noise …

Marshall, Yizhong Jenny Hu, Andrea G. Schwartz, X. Edward Guo, Victor Birman, Philipp J. Thurner, Guy M. Genin, Stavros Thomopoulos

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Architectured materials offer tailored mechanical properties but are limited in engineering applications due to challenges in maintaining toughness across their attachments. The enthesis connects tendon and bone, two vastly different architectured materials, and exhibits toughness across a wide range of loadings. Understanding the mechanisms by which this is achieved could inform the development of engineered attachments. Integrating experiments, simulations, and previously unexplored imaging that enabled simultaneous observation of mineralized and unmineralized tissues, we identified putative mechanisms of enthesis toughening in a mouse model and then manipulated these mechanisms via in vivo control of mineralization and architecture. Imaging uncovered a fibrous …

A Conceptual Efficient Design Of Energy Recovery Systems Using A New Energy-Area Key Parameter, Ibrahim H. Alhajri, Mamdouh A. Gadalla, Hany A. Elazab

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Energy integration in petrochemical and refining industries is an effective concept to minimize dependence on heating and cooling utilities through networks of exchanger equipment. Pinch Analysis is very popular and successful technique to optimize heat recovery between heat sources and sinks. Yet, design of networks of exchangers is challenging and requires careful attention to energy consumption and exchanger areas. This work presents a graphical methodology to design exchanger networks taking into account both heat loads and transfer areas of exchanger units in one single information. A new parameter is introduced for design that is the ratio between the heat load …

Apportioning Deformation Among Depth Intervals In An Aquifer System Using Insar And Head Data, Ryan G. Smith, Hossein Hashemi, Jingyi Chen, Rosemary Knight

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Land surface subsidence due to excessive groundwater pumping is an increasing concern in California, USA. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a remote sensing technique for measuring centimeter-to-millimeter surface deformation at 10-100 m spatial resolution. Here, a data-driven approach that attributes deformation to individual depth intervals within an aquifer system by integrating head data acquired from each of three screened intervals in a monitoring well with InSAR surface deformation measurements was developed. The study area was the Colusa Basin in northern Central Valley. To reconstruct the surface deformation history over the study area, 13 ALOS-PALSAR scenes acquired between 2006 and …
