Although the heterogeneous nature of the chemical composition of Earth's mantle is now well established, the origin and longevity of the heterogeneities continue to be debated. In order to further study early-Earth heterogeneities, we present a set of Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os, and Hf-W isotope and lithophile and siderophile element abundance data for komatiites and basalts from the ∼3.53 Ga Coonterunah, ∼3.34 Ga Kelly, and ∼3.18 Ga Ruth Well and Regal systems of the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia. The Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, and Re-Os isotope data yield isochrons consistent with the accepted emplacement ages of the respective komatiite-basalt lavas. The mantle …

The use of gas-atomized powder as the feedstock material for the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process is common in the additive manufacturing (AM) community. Although gas-atomization produces powder with high sphericity, its relatively expensive production cost is a downside for application in AM processes. Water atomization of powder may overcome this limitation due to its low-cost relative to the gas-atomization process. In this work, gas- and water-atomized 304L stainless steel powders were morphologically characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water-atomized powder had a wider particle size distribution and exhibited less sphericity. Measuring powder flowability using the Revolution Powder …

With the tremendous increase in spending on public projects, contractors need to employ efficient and effective bidding strategies to cope with the competitive bidding environment. Usually, general contractors carry a portion of the work and subcontract other parts to eventually submit a holistic joint bid. This bidding setting is referred to as multistage bidding where subcontractors submit their quotations/bids to the general contractor, after which the general contractor submits a final joint bid for the whole project. In a multistage bidding environment, general contractors may be faced with an increase in the probability of negative or below normal profits. Despite …

This paper presents the results of a community survey that was designed to better under-stand the effects of permafrost degradation and coastal erosion on civil infrastructure. Observations were collected from residents in four Arctic coastal communities: Point Lay, Wainwright, Utqiaġvik, and Kaktovik. All four communities are underlain by continuous ice-rich permafrost with varying degrees of degradation and coastal erosion. The types, locations, and periods of observed permafrost thaw and coastal erosion were elicited. Survey participants also reported the types of civil infrastructure being affected by permafrost degradation and coastal erosion and any damage to residential buildings. Most survey participants reported …
Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen Atoms In Excited D States, Chandra M. Adhikari, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen Atoms In Excited D States, Chandra M. Adhikari, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Pressure shifts inside an atomic beam are among the more theoretically challenging effects in high-precision measurements of atomic transitions. A crucial element in their theoretical analysis is the understanding of long-range interatomic interactions inside the beam. For excited reference states, the presence of quasi-degenerate states leads to additional challenges, due to the necessity to diagonalize large matrices in the quasi-degenerate hyperfine manifolds. Here, we focus on the interactions of hydrogen atoms in reference states composed of an excited nD state (atom A), and in the metastable 2S state (atom B). We devote special attention to the cases n = 3 …

We study the magic wavelength for two-photon 1S-nS transitions in a hydrogen and deuterium atom, as well as 2S-nS transitions, where the lower level is the metastable 2S state. At the magic wavelength, the dynamic Stark shifts of the ground and the excited state of the transition coincide, so that the transition frequency is independent of the intensity of the trapping laser field. Experimentally feasible magic wavelengths of transitions with small slopes in the atomic polarizabilities are determined; these are the most stable magic wavelengths against variations of the laser frequency. We provide data for the magic wavelengths for the …

In this article, we introduce a novel approximate optimal decentralized control scheme for uncertain input-affine nonlinear-interconnected systems. In the proposed scheme, we design a controller and an event-triggering mechanism (ETM) at each subsystem to optimize a local performance index and reduce redundant control updates, respectively. To this end, we formulate a noncooperative dynamic game at every subsystem in which we collectively model the interconnection inputs and the event-triggering error as adversarial players that deteriorate the subsystem performance and model the control policy as the performance optimizer, competing against these adversarial players. To obtain a solution to this game, one has …

The performance of a deep neural network (deep NN) is dependent upon a significant number of weight parameters that need to be trained which is a computational bottleneck. The growing trend of deeper architectures poses a restriction on the training and inference scheme on resource-constrained devices. Pruning is an important method for removing the deep NN's unimportant parameters and making their deployment easier on resource-constrained devices for practical applications. In this paper, we proposed a heuristics-based novel filter pruning method to automatically identify and prune the unimportant filters and make the inference process faster on devices with limited resource availability. …

Artificial agents such as robots, chatbots, and artificial intelligence systems can be the perpetrators of a range of moral violations traditionally limited to human actors. This paper explores how people perceive the same moral violations differently for artificial agent and human perpetrators by addressing three research questions: How wrong are moral foundation violations by artificial agents compared to human perpetrators? Which moral foundations do artificial agents violate compared to human perpetrators? What leads to increased blame for moral foundation violations by artificial agents compared to human perpetrators? We adapt 18 human-perpetrated moral violation scenarios that differ by the moral foundation …

Introduction: This article offers an approach that we call critical collaboration - an array of theoretical commitments drawn from the authors' embodiments and lived experiences. In making explicit the connections between authorial embodiment and the content of theory and practice, our practical models demonstrate new and varied approaches to public feminisms. We begin with a discussion of embodiment and then offer four sections - amplification rhetorics, apparent feminisms, a techné of marginality, and memetic rhetorical environments - with key takeaways to guide readers through our related-but-different approaches. Our goal in doing so is to underscore the importance of public feminisms …

Unjust Revisions: A Social Justice Framework For Technical Editing, Sam Clem, Ryan Cheek
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background: There is a lack of conceptual framework for how to develop more inclusive practices in the subfield of technical editing. Literature review: Some researchers have posited theories, like feminism and rhetorical theory, as ways to conceptualize technical editing. This piece extends that literature into social justice using Walton, Moore, and Jones's 3Ps heuristic of positionality, privilege, and power. Research questions: 1. What ideologies are circulating in technical editing pedagogy? 2. How might technical editing pedagogy become more inclusive? Methodology: We conduct a rhetorical analysis of the major academic works in technical editing, including books, textbooks, and academic articles, and …

To delineate the mantle flow fields in the vicinity of a previously proposed slab window and the possible roles that they may play in the formation of potassic volcanism in Central Java, we conduct shear wave splitting analyses using both local S and teleseismic XKS waves (including SKS, SKKS, and PKS) recorded by 121 onshore stations and two ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs). The XKS fast orientations from the OBSs are trench normal and in accord with previous subslab anisotropy measurements. In the eastern part of Central Java, the XKS and local S fast orientations from the onshore stations are mostly …

Prior studies find that nonfamily managers enhance family firm performance, yet other studies note that family firms have difficulty attracting high-quality nonfamily managers, often settling for average-quality nonfamily managers. Given these findings, how is it possible that average-quality nonfamily managers enhance family firm performance? We address this paradox by theorizing that lower-performing, rather than higher-performing, family firms are more likely to benefit from employing nonfamily managers. Using a sample of 324 small family firms, we find that family firms with below-average performance significantly benefit from employing nonfamily managers, whereas family firms with above-average performance do not experience the same benefit. …

Methylaluminoxane (MAO) is the most commonly used co‐catalyst for transition metalcatalyzed olefin polymerization, but the structures of MAO species and their catalytic functions remain topics of intensive study. We are interested in MAO‐assisted polymerization with catalysts L(R2)FeCl2 (L = tridentate pyridine‐2,6‐diyldimethanimine; imine‐R = Me, Ph). It is our hypothesis that the MAO species is not merely enabling Fe−Me bond formation but functions as an integral part of the active catalyst, a MAO adduct of the Fe‐precatalyst [L(R2)FeCl]+. In this paper, we explored the possible structures of acyclic and cyclic MAO species and their …

Oxidative damage to lens epithelial cells plays an important role in the development of age-related cataract, and the health of the lens has important implications for overall ocular health. As a result, there is a need for effective therapeutic agents that prevent oxidative damage to the lens. Thiol antioxidants such as tiopronin or N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine (MPG), N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and exogenous glutathione (GSH) may be promising candidates for this purpose, but their ability to protect lens epithelial cells is not well understood. The effectiveness of these compounds was compared by exposing human lens epithelial cells (HLE B-3) to the …

We Investigate The Polaronic Properties Of A Single Impurity Immersed In A Weakly Interacting Bosonic Environment Confined Within A One-Dimensional Double-Well Potential Using An Exact Diagonalization Approach. We Find That An Increase Of The Impurity-Bath Coupling Results In A Vanishing Residue, Signifying The Occurrence Of The Polaron Orthogonality Catastrophe. Asymptotic Configurations Of The Systems' Ground State Wave Function In The Strongly Interacting Regime Are Obtained By Means Of A Schmidt Decomposition, Which In Turn Accounts For The Observed Orthogonality Catastrophe Of The Polaron. We Exemplify That Depending On The Repulsion Of The Bose Gas, Three Distinct Residue Behaviors Appear With …

We Explicate That The Character Of The Equilibrium State Crossovers From The Quasi-Particle Bose Polaron Regime To The Collective-Excitation Stationary Dark-Bright Soliton For Varying Impurity Momentum And Interactions. Following An Interspecies Interaction Quench The Temporal Orthogonality Catastrophe Is Identified, Provided That Bath-Impurity Interactions Are Sufficiently Stronger …

Acoustic stimulation offers a green pathway for the extraction of valuable elements such as Si, Ca, and Mg via solubilization of minerals and industrial waste materials. Prior studies have focused on the use of ultrasonic frequencies (20-40 kHz) to stimulate dissolution, but mega sonic frequencies (≥1 MHz) offer benefits such as matching of the resonance frequencies of solute particles and an increased frequency of cavitation events. Here, based on dissolution tests of a series of minerals, it is found that dissolution under resonance conditions produced dissolution enhancements between 4x-to-6x in Si-rich materials (obsidian, albite, and quartz). Cavitational collapse induced by …

The volumetric water content (VWC) of soil is a critical parameter in agriculture, as VWC strongly influences crop yield, provides nutrients to plants, and maintains the microbes that are needed for the biological health of the soil. Measuring VWC is difficult, as it is spatially and tempo-rally heterogeneous, and most agricultural producers use point measurements that cannot fully capture this parameter. Electrical conductivity (EC) is another soil parameter that is useful in agricul-ture, since it can be used to indicate soil salinity, soil texture, and plant nutrient availability. Soil EC is also very heterogeneous; measuring EC using conventional soil sampling …

Selective laser melting (SLM) process allows greater geometry flexibility; therefore, it has become more widespread in its deployment in the industry for fabricating metal alloys. However, a material characterization study is needed in order to understand better the correlation between the process, microstructure, and performance. In the current study, the raw SLM fabricated AISI stainless steel 304 L was fabricated with different processing parameters and build orientations (horizontal, inclined, and vertical). The tensile behavior was evaluated under different strain rates (0.0001/s, 0.001/s, 0.01/s, and 0.1/s) and then compared to commercial cold-rolled and annealed counterparts. Grain structures, tensile strength, elongation-to-failure, strain …
