Wettability Alteration Process At Pore-Scale During Engineered Waterflooding Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Yongqiang Chen, Ping Chang, Guang Xu, Quan Xie

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineered waterflooding modifies chemistry of injected brine to efficiently and environmentally friendly enhance oil recovery. The common practice of engineered waterflooding includes low salinity waterflooding (LSW) and carbonated waterflooding. Among these oil recovery methods, wettability alteration has been perceived as a critical physicochemical process for additional oil recovery. While extensive work has been conducted to characterize the wettability alteration, the existing theory cannot explain the conflict oil recovery between secondary mode (injecting engineered water at the very beginning of flooding) and tertiary mode (injecting engineered water after conventional waterflooding), where secondary engineered waterflooding always gives a greater incremental oil recovery …

Descriptive Statistical Analysis Of Experimental Data For Wettability Alteration With Surfactants In Carbonate Reservoirs, Ya Yao, Mingzhen Wei, Baojun Bai

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surfactants have been the widely used agents to alter the wettability of carbonate rocks to more water-wet and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). As one of major EOR methods, an effective surfactant huff-puff application design requires comprehensive guidelines about where, how, and when this method could be applied. In order to construct such guidelines, a dataset including 338 effective surfactant imbibition tests is established by collecting information from nearly 50 publications. Based on this dataset, descriptive statistical analysis methods are used to conduct data analysis, including three main parts. The first part establishes the application guidelines for surfactant huff-puff treatments which …

Detonation Synthesis Of Nanoscale Silicon Carbide From Elemental Silicon, Martin J. Langenderfer, Yue Zhou, Jeremy Lee Watts, William Fahrenholtz, Catherine E. Johnson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct reaction of precursors with the products of detonation remains an underexplored area in the ever-growing body of detonation synthesis literature. This study demonstrated the synthesis of silicon carbide during detonation by reaction of elemental silicon with carbon products formed from detonation of RDX/TNT mixtures. Continuum scale simulation of the detonation showed that energy transfer by the detonation wave was completed within 2–9 μs depending on location of measurement within the detonating explosive charge. The simulated environment in the detonation product flow beyond the Chapman-Jouguet condition where pressure approaches 27 GPa and temperatures reach 3300 K was thermodynamically suitable for …

Control Of High-Temperature Static And Transient Thermomechanical Behavior Of Simo Ductile Iron By Al Alloying, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Catherine E. Johnson, L. Godlewski, Mei Li Feb 2022

Control Of High-Temperature Static And Transient Thermomechanical Behavior Of Simo Ductile Iron By Al Alloying, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Catherine E. Johnson, L. Godlewski, Mei Li

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silicon and molybdenum (SiMo) ductile iron is commonly used for exhaust manifolds because these components experience thermal cycling in oxidizing environment, which requires resistance to fatigue during transient thermomechanical loads. Previous studies have demonstrated that alloying elements, such as Al, to SiMo ductile iron reduces the amount of surface degradation during static high-temperature exposure. However, deterioration of sphericity of the graphite nodules and a decrease in ductility could affect the tendency of cracking during thermal cycling. In this article, the effect of Al alloying on static and transient thermomechanical behavior of SiMo ductile iron was investigated to optimize the amount …

Implication Of Production Tax Credit On Economic Dispatch For Electricity Merchants With Storage And Wind Farms, Jian Liu, Meng Ou, Xinyue Sun, Jian Chen, Chuanmin Mi, Rui Bo Feb 2022

Implication Of Production Tax Credit On Economic Dispatch For Electricity Merchants With Storage And Wind Farms, Jian Liu, Meng Ou, Xinyue Sun, Jian Chen, Chuanmin Mi, Rui Bo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production tax credit (PTC) promotes wind energy development, reduces power generation costs, and can affect merchants' joint economic dispatch, particularly for electricity merchants with both energy storage and wind farms. Two common PTC policies are studied – in the first policy, a wind farm receives PTC by selling wind generation to the market and its storage can be used to store energy from the wind generation and energy purchased from the grid but the energy released from the storage cannot receive PTC; in the second policy, the energy released from the storage can also qualify for PTC but purchasing …

Effect Of Interfacial Atomic Mixing On The Thermal Conductivity Of Multi-Layered Stacking Structure, Yingguang Liu, Xinqiang Xue, Guoliang Ren, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy Feb 2022

Effect Of Interfacial Atomic Mixing On The Thermal Conductivity Of Multi-Layered Stacking Structure, Yingguang Liu, Xinqiang Xue, Guoliang Ren, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-layered stacking structures and atomic mixing interfaces were constructed. The effects of various factors on the thermal conductivity of different lattice structures were studied by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, including the number of atomic mixing layers, temperature, total length of the system, and period length. The results showed that the mixing of two and four layers of atoms can improve the thermal conductivities of the multi-layer structure with a small total length due to a phonon "bridge" mechanism. When the total length of the system is large, the thermal conductivity of the multi-layer structure with atomic mixing interfaces decreases significantly …

Noninvasive Detection, Tracking, And Characterization Of Aerogel Implants Using Diagnostic Ultrasound, Sagar Ghimire, Martina Rodriguez Sala, Swetha Chandrasekaran, Grigorios Raptopoulos, Marcus Worsley, Patrina Paraskevopoulou, Nicholas Leventis, Firouzeh Sabri

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Medical implants are routinely tracked and monitored using different techniques, such as MRI, X‐ray, and ultrasound. Due to the need for ionizing radiation, the two former methods pose a significant risk to tissue. Ultrasound imaging, however, is non‐invasive and presents no known risk to human tissue. Aerogels are an emerging material with great potential in biomedical implants. While qualitative observation of ultrasound images by experts can already provide a lot of infor-mation about the implants and the surrounding structures, this paper describes the development and study of two simple B‐Mode image analysis techniques based on attenuation measurements and echogenicity comparisons, …

Dynamical Properties Of Environmental High-Performance Composites With Calcined Clay, Jingjie Wei, Wu Jian Long, Kamal Khayat, Biqin Dong, Liu Mei, Feng Xing

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete structures may be exposed to dynamic loadings within short periods such as earthquakes and vehicles load, resulting in substantial damage to human life and property because of the collapse of concrete structures. The research achievements on dynamic properties of high-performance composites with LC3 (HPC-LC3) are limited, although dynamic loadings are commonly encountered in infrastructure. The study aims to develop a new-green concrete product (HPC-LC3) with high dynamical properties and promote its mass use in a vibration service environment by investigating dynamical properties of HPC-LC3. Dynamical properties of structure can be promoted at material level by means of enhancing the …

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Supported Manganese Selenide As A Highly Active Bifunctional Oer And Orr Electrocatalyst, Harish Singh, Mckenzie Marley-Hines, Shatadru Chakravarty, Manashi Nath

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transition metal selenides have attracted intensive interest as cost-effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of the continuous thrust in sustainable energy conversion. In this article a Mn-based bifunctional electrocatalyst, MnSe, has been identified which shows efficient OER and ORR activity in alkaline medium. The catalytic activity could be further enhanced by using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which increases the charge transfer and electronic conductivity of the catalyst composite. This MnSe@MWCNT catalyst composite exhibits a very low overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which outperforms state-of-the-art RuO2 as …

Epitaxial Electrodeposition Of Hole Transport Cuscn Nanorods On Au(111) At The Wafer Scale And Lift-Off To Produce Flexible And Transparent Foils, Bin Luo, Avishek Banik, Eric W. Bohannan, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The wide bandgap p-type metal pseudohalide semiconductor copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) can serve as a transparent hole transport layer in various opto-electronic applications such as perovsksite and organic solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The material deposits as one-dimensional CuSCN nanorod arrays, which are advantageous due to their high surface area and good charge transport properties. However, the growth of high-quality epitaxial CuSCN nanorods has remained a challenge. Here, we introduce a low cost and highly scalable room temperature procedure for producing epitaxial CuSCN nanorods on Au(111) by an electrochemical method. Epitaxial CuSCN grows on Au(111) with a high degree of in-plane …

Building Marginal Pattern Library With Unbiased Training Dataset For Enhancing Model-Free Load-Ed Mapping, Qiwei Zhang, Fangxing Li, Wei Feng, Xiaofei Wang, Linquan Bai, Rui Bo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Input-output mapping for a given power system problem, such as loads versus economic dispatch (ED) results, has been demonstrated to be learnable through artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including neural networks. However, the process of identifying and constructing a comprehensive dataset for the training of such input-output mapping remains a challenge to be solved. Conventionally, load samples are generated by a pre-defined distribution, and then ED is solved based on those load samples to form training datasets, but this paper demonstrates that such dataset generation is biased regarding load-ED mapping. The marginal unit and line congestion (i.e., marginal pattern) exhibit a …

Geant4 Simulation For Radioactive Particle Tracking (Rpt) Technique, Ahmed A. Alghamdi, Thaar M. Aljuwaya, Abdullah S. Alomari, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the past two decades, the radioactive particle tracking (RPT) measurement technique has been proven to visualize flow fields of most multiphase flow systems of industrial interest. The accuracy of RPT, and hence the data obtained, depend largely on the calibration process, which stands here as a basis for two subsequent processes: tracking and reconstruction. However, limitations in the RPT calibration process can be found in different experimental constrains and in assumptions made in the classical Monte Carlo approach used to simulate number of counts received by the detectors. Therefore, in this work, we applied a GEANT4-based Monte Carlo code …

Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Placement Behavior Of Microgels For Conformance Control In Reservoirs Containing Superpermeable Channels, Yang Zhao, Baojun Bai

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gel treatment has been proven an effective method to attack excessive water production in many mature oilfields. However, not all of the application projects have successful stories. The effectiveness of a gel treatment largely depends on the transport and placement behavior of gel materials in reservoirs to be treated. In this work, we carried out systematic studies to investigate the transport, placement, water-blocking ability, fluid diversion and sweep improvement, and matrix damage effect of micrometer-sized preformed particle gels (microgels) in reservoirs containing superpermeable (super-K) channels. The impact of the channel/matrix permeability contrast and the particle/pore size ratio in the channels …

Periodicity On Isolated Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we formulate the definition of periodicity for functions defined on isolated time scales. The introduced definition is consistent with the known formulations in the discrete and quantum calculus settings. Using the definition of periodicity, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions to a family of linear dynamic equations on isolated time scales. Examples in quantum calculus and for mixed isolated time scales are presented.

On Inclusions With Monotone-Type Mappings In Nonreflexive Banach Spaces, Vy Khoi Le

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We are concerned in this article with the existence of solutions to inclusions containing generalized pseudomonotone perturbations of maximal monotone mappings in general Banach spaces. Our approach is based on a truncation–regularization technique and an extension of the Moreau–Yosida–Brezis–Crandall–Pazy regularization for maximal monotone mappings in general Banach spaces. We also consider some applications to multivalued variational inequalities containing elliptic operators with rapidly growing coefficients in Orlicz–Sobolev spaces.

A Multigrid Multilevel Monte Carlo Method For Stokes–Darcy Model With Random Hydraulic Conductivity And Beavers–Joseph Condition, Zhipeng Yang, Ju Ming, Changxin Qiu, Maojun Li, Xiaoming He

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A multigrid multilevel Monte Carlo (MGMLMC) method is developed for the stochastic Stokes–Darcy interface model with random hydraulic conductivity both in the porous media domain and on the interface. Three interface conditions with randomness are considered on the interface between Stokes and Darcy equations, especially the Beavers–Joesph interface condition with random hydraulic conductivity. Because the randomness through the interface affects the flow in the Stokes domain, we investigate the coupled stochastic Stokes–Darcy model to improve the fidelity. Under suitable assumptions on the random coefficient, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of the variational form. To construct …

Setting Times Of Early-Age Mortars Determined From Evolution Curves Of Poisson’S Ratio, Bate Bate, Xiao Chen, Chao Chen, Hongyan Ma, Jianfeng Zhu, Junnan Cao, Jiakai Chen, Kamal Khayat, Shuai Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Setting times, as the early-age properties of cement-based materials, are important properties to ensure the quality and long-term performance of engineering structures. To determine the initial and final setting times of cementitious materials, the compressive wave velocity and shear wave velocity of six early-age mortar samples were monitored. Their time evolution curves of Young's modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio were then calculated and analyzed. The signature times of the derivatives of the Poisson's ratio evolution curves correlate well with the initial and final setting times, and the remarkably high coefficient of determination values relative to the data …

Water Film Depth Prediction Model For Highly Textured Pavement Surface Drainage, Alireza Pourhassan, Ahmed A. Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Water film depth (WFD) is an important factor for road traffic safety because of its direct connection with skid resistance, hydroplaning speed, and the tendency of splash and spray. Increasing the pavement macrotexture reduces WFD. However, existing models for WFD prediction have not been developed on highly textured surfaces such as chip seal. Furthermore, the rainfall intensities used for developing most of these models were relatively low, leaving no or low WFD on chip seal surfaces. To propose a WFD prediction model suitable for highly textured surfaces and to consider the effect of surface material type, an experimental study was …

Gel treatment has been widely applied in mature oilfields to improve sweep efficiency and control water production. Correct numerical simulation is of major importance to the optimization design and prediction of a successful gel treatment. However, there exist many problems in current simulation studies in published literature. This paper first presents a comprehensive review on the major factors that have been considered at different gelation stages during gel treatment, the models used in the commercial/in-house simulators, and current numerical simulation studies on both laboratory and field scales. Then we classify the current in-situ gel numerical simulation problems as 1, deficient …

In this article, we study the orienteering aisle-graph single-access problem (OASP), a variant of the orienteering problem for a robot moving in a so-called single-access aisle graph, i.e., a graph consisting of a set of rows that can be accessed from one side only. Aisle graphs model, among others, vineyards or warehouses. Each aisle-graph vertex is associated with a reward that a robot obtains when it visits the vertex itself. As the energy of the robot is limited, only a subset of vertices can be visited with a fully charged battery. The objective is to maximize the total reward collected …

Understanding the cement hardening process and determining the development of the state of stress in the cement under specific downhole conditions are challenging but fundamental requirements to perform an accurate prediction of wellbore integrity. As an essential component of the state of stress, the temporal variation of cement pore pressure is a critical factor that affects the occurrence of cement failure. In this study, we present a novel laboratory setup to measure the cement pore pressure variation during hardening under representative downhole conditions, including the pressure, temperature, and water exchange between the cement and formation. The pore pressure measurements are …

The Southeast Missouri Iron Metallogenic Province in the Midcontinent USA contains seven major and several minor IOA/IOCG-type deposits and a series of shallow vein-type deposits/prospects, all of which are spatially and temporally associated with early Mesoproterozoic (1500–1440 Ma) magmatism in the St. Francois Mountains terrane. One of the vein-type deposits is the Shepherd Mountain deposit, which consists of two northeast-trending ore veins dominated by magnetite and lesser amounts of hematite. Here we report the findings of a study that investigates the origin of the Shepherd Mountain deposit and a possible genetic link to the nearby (i.e., away) magmatic to magmatic-hydrothermal …

One of the vein-type deposits is the Shepherd Mountain deposit, which consists of two northeast-trending ore veins dominated by magnetite and lesser amounts of hematite. Here we report the findings of a study that investigates the origin of the Shepherd Mountain deposit and a possible genetic link to the nearby (i.e., < 5 km away) magmatic to magmatic-hydrothermal Pilot Knob ore system that comprises the massive-to-disseminated Pilot Knob Magnetite deposit and the overlying bedded and brecciated Pilot Knob Hematite deposit. Petrographic observations, whole-rock data and the trace element and Fe isotope composition of magnetite and hematite show that the Shepherd Mountain deposit formed from at least five pulses of magmatic-hydrothermal fluids with different compositions and physicochemical parameters. Integration of the data for the Shepherd Mountain deposit with new and published data from the Pilot Knob Magnetite and Pilot Knob Hematite deposits shows that the three deposits are genetically linked through two local faults. The Ironton and Pilot Knob faults provided fluid pathways that connected the Pilot Knob Magnetite deposit to the shallower Shepherd Mountain and Pilot Knob Hematite deposits. Consequently, we argue that the Shepherd Mountain and Pilot Knob Hematite deposits are near-surface extensions of the same magmatic to hydrothermal plumbing system that formed the Pilot Knob Magnetite deposit at depth.

The volumetric water content (VWC) of soil is a critical parameter in agriculture, as VWC strongly influences crop yield, provides nutrients to plants, and maintains the microbes that are needed for the biological health of the soil. Measuring VWC is difficult, as it is spatially and tempo-rally heterogeneous, and most agricultural producers use point measurements that cannot fully capture this parameter. Electrical conductivity (EC) is another soil parameter that is useful in agricul-ture, since it can be used to indicate soil salinity, soil texture, and plant nutrient availability. Soil EC is also very heterogeneous; measuring EC using conventional soil sampling …

Gel treatment is an effective way to attack excessive water production during oil development. The transport behavior of gel materials in reservoirs is of crucial importance to the effectiveness of gel treatments. The aim of this paper is investigating the transport behavior of swellable micrometer-sized preformed particle gels (PPGs, or microgels) through superpermeable (super-K) channels. Sandpacks with permeabilities ranging from 27 to 221 darcies were used to mimic the super-K channels. Multiple pressure sensors were applied along the sandpack models to monitor the propagation behavior of the microgels. The tested microgel particles could transport through the super-K channels, and a …
