This paper presents the results of a community survey that was designed to better under-stand the effects of permafrost degradation and coastal erosion on civil infrastructure. Observations were collected from residents in four Arctic coastal communities: Point Lay, Wainwright, Utqiaġvik, and Kaktovik. All four communities are underlain by continuous ice-rich permafrost with varying degrees of degradation and coastal erosion. The types, locations, and periods of observed permafrost thaw and coastal erosion were elicited. Survey participants also reported the types of civil infrastructure being affected by permafrost degradation and coastal erosion and any damage to residential buildings. Most survey participants reported …

Modeling Of Temperature Swing Adsorption-Oxidation Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Busuyi O. Adebayo, Fateme Rezaei
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, we simulated a single-bed 4-step temperature swing adsorption-oxidation (TSAO) process for capture and in situ oxidation of benzene, as a model VOC, over Ni/ZrO2-SiO2, as a dual-function material (DFM). The TSAO cycles consisted of adsorption, preheating, desorption/oxidation, and cooling steps. The model sensitive parameters were estimated via parameter estimation and validated against experimental data. Extensive parametric analysis was carried out to investigate the effects of key process variables on the TSAO performance. Model results revealed relatively good prediction of the process. Under the conditions investigated, adsorption, oxidation and total removal efficiencies were estimated …

We have measured and calculated fully differential cross sections for vibrational dissociation following capture in 75-keV p + H2 collisions. For a molecular orientation perpendicular to the projectile beam axis and parallel to the transverse momentum transfer we observe a pronounced interference structure. The positions of the interference extrema suggest that the interference term is afflicted with a phase shift which depends on the projectile scattering angle. However, no significant dependence on the kinetic-energy release was observed. Considerable discrepancies between our calculations and experimental data were found.

Multi-element layered materials have gained substantial attention in the context of achieving the customized light-matter interactions at subwavelength scale via stoichiometric engineering, which is crucial for the realization of miniaturized polarization-sensitive optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. Herein, naturally occurring hydrated sodium sulfosalt gerstleyite is introduced as one new multi-element van der Waals (vdW) layered material. The mechanically exfoliated thin gerstleyite flakes are demonstrated to exhibit polarization-sensitive anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical responses including angle-resolved Raman scattering, anomalous wavelength-dependent linear dichroism transition, birefringence effect, and polarization-dependent third-harmonic generation (THG). Furthermore, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of gerstleyite crystal is estimated by the probed …

Experimental data are presented for low-energy singly charged ion transport between two insulating parallel plates. Using a beam intensity of approximately 20 pA, measurements of the incoming and transmitted beams provide quantitative temporal information about the charge deposited on the plates and the guiding probability. Using a smaller beam intensity (~ 1 pA) plate charging and discharging properties were studied as a function of time. These data imply that both the charge deposition and decay along the surface and through the bulk need to be modeled as acting independently. A further reduction of beam intensity to ~ 25 fA allowed …

In this paper, we articulate the challenge of multiple intersecting policies for the realization of rural broadband networks employing dynamic spectrum access (DSA). Broadband connectivity has been identified as a critical component of economic development, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and rural communities have been significantly (and negatively) affected by the lack of this important resource. Although technologies exist that can deliver broadband connectivity, such as 4G LTE and 5G cellular networks, the challenges associated with efficiently deploying this infrastructure within a rural environment are multi-dimensional in terms of the different dependent policy decisions that need to be considered. To …

Simplified Analytical Model To Assess Key Factors Influenced By Fiber Alignment And Their Effect On Tensile Performance Of Uhpc, Le Teng, Huanghuang Huang, Kamal Khayat, Xiaojian Gao
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The increase in single-fiber pullout strength usually improves tensile strength and toughness of UHPC. An increase in fiber orientation angle (θ) up to 45° to the direction of pullout load was found to enhance the single-fiber pullout strength. However, such increase in predominant θ value along tensile strength specimens led to a reduction in tensile strength of UHPC. In order to elucidate this controversial observation, analytical models combined with experiments were carried out to assess the key factors influencing the tensile properties of UHPC due to variations of fiber orientation. The test parameters involved the evaluation of the effect of …

Tornadoes result in death and property loss in communities around the world. To quantify the actions of tornadoes on civil structures, researchers have built physical laboratory tornado simulators to simulate tornadoes in the lab environment and tested building models in the simulated tornadic wind field, which is similar to wind tunnel testing when quantifying the wind effects induced by straight-line winds. Unfortunately, physical tornado simulators are much less common than straight-line wind tunnels, leading to the lack of research on bluff-body aerodynamics on civil structures under tornadic winds. Considering that it is expensive to conduct experimental testing in physical tornado …

Crack is the external expression form of potential safety risks in bridge construction. Currently, automatic detection and segmentation of bridge cracks remains the top priority of civil engineers. With the development of image segmentation techniques based on convolutional neural networks, new opportunities emerge in bridge crack detection. Traditional bridge crack detection methods are vulnerable to complex background and small cracks, which is difficult to achieve effective segmentation. This study presents a bridge crack segmentation method based on a densely connected U-Net network (BC-DUnet) with a background elimination module and cross-attention mechanism. First, a dense connected feature extraction model (DCFEM) integrating …

Multi-domain networking slice orchestration is an essential technology for the programmable and cloud-native 5G network. However, existing research solutions are either based on the impractical assumption that operators will reveal all the private network information or time-consuming secure multi-party computation which is only applicable to limited computation scenarios. To provide agile and privacy-preserving end-to-end network slice orchestration services, this paper proposes NetChain, a multi-domain network slice orchestration architecture based on blockchain and trusted execution environment. Correspondingly, we design a novel consensus algorithm CoNet to ensure the strong security, scalability, and information consistency of NetChain. In addition, a bilateral evaluation mechanism …

Selective Penetration Behavior Of Microgels In Superpermeable Channels And Reservoir Matrices, Yang Zhao, Baojun Bai
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Gel treatment is an effective way to attack excessive water production in many mature oilfields around the world. Selective penetration is desired for successful gel treatments. That is, gel materials should easily penetrate the target zones (i.e., channeling features such as superpermeable channels) without entering/damaging the nontarget zones (i.e., reservoir matrices or oil zones). This study revealed that presence of threshold penetration pressure (ΔPth) was responsible for selective penetration behavior of tested microgels. The concept of ΔPth was utilized to figure out favorable working conditions for effective gel treatments. Microgel dispersions were injected into superpermeable (super-k) sandpacks (mimicking super-k channels …

This article presents a novel method to design the decoupling and matching network (DMN) for dual-band multi-input-multioutput (MIMO) antennas. The DMN consists of a grid of metallic microstrip stubs, some of which are connected while others are not. The connecting condition in the DMN is the only unknown variable for realizing high antenna isolation. It is determined by rigorous design formulas upon scattering matrix and optimized by the binary optimization algorithm, e.g., genetic algorithm (GA). Thus, high isolation among antennas can be achieved without requiring the optimization process in the electromagnetic simulation tool. Three decoupling examples of two two-element symmetric …

Utilizing CO2 as a mild oxidant for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) is an attractive way of recycling this greenhouse contaminant. Typically, CO2 capture and conversion processes are performed in separate beds, however, combining these processes into one bed incurs advantages of lower thermal gradient and reduced energy costs. This study formulated the first generation of structured dual-functional materials (DFMs) by directly 3D printing metal-oxide-CaO/ZSM-5 inks into monolithic contactors. Specifically, we 3D-printed monoliths with V, Ga, Ni, or Ti dopants to perform metal screening and determine which metal generates the best structured DFM for combined CO2 capture …

Pressure shifts inside an atomic beam are among the more theoretically challenging effects in high-precision measurements of atomic transitions. A crucial element in their theoretical analysis is the understanding of long-range interatomic interactions inside the beam. For excited reference states, the presence of quasi-degenerate states leads to additional challenges, due to the necessity to diagonalize large matrices in the quasi-degenerate hyperfine manifolds. Here, we focus on the interactions of hydrogen atoms in reference states composed of an excited nD state (atom A), and in the metastable 2S state (atom B). We devote special attention to the cases n = 3 …

Diffusion makes it difficult to predict and control wave transport through a medium. Overcoming wave diffusion to deliver energy into a target region deep inside a diffusive system is an important challenge for applications, but also represents an interesting fundamental question. It is known that coherently controlling the incident wavefront allows diffraction-limited focusing inside a diffusive system, but in many applications, the targets are significantly larger than a focus and the maximum deliverable energy remains unknown. Here we introduce the 'deposition matrix', which maps an input wavefront to the internal field distribution, and we theoretically predict the ultimate limit on …

We study the magic wavelength for two-photon 1S–nS transitions in a hydrogen and deuterium atom, as well as 2S–nS transitions, where the lower level is the metastable 2S state. At the magic wavelength, the dynamic Stark shifts of the ground and the excited state of the transition coincide, so that the transition frequency is independent of the intensity of the trapping laser field. Experimentally feasible magic wavelengths of transitions with small slopes in the atomic polarizabilities are determined; these are the most stable magic wavelengths against variations of the laser frequency. We provide data for the magic wavelengths for the …

We Have Measured and Calculated Fully Differential Cross Sections for Vibrational Dissociation Following Capture in 75-KeV P+H2 Collisions. for a Molecular Orientation Perpendicular to the Projectile Beam Axis and Parallel to the Transverse Momentum Transfer We Observe a Pronounced Interference Structure. the Positions of the Interference Extrema Suggest that the Interference Term is Afflicted with a Phase Shift Which Depends on the Projectile Scattering Angle. However, No Significant Dependence on the Kinetic-Energy Release Was Observed. Considerable Discrepancies between Our Calculations and Experimental Data Were Found.

We present zELDA (redshift Estimator for Line profiles of Distant Lyman Alpha emitters), an open-source code to fit Lyman α (Ly α) line profiles. The main motivation is to provide the community with an easy to use and fast tool to analyse Ly α line profiles uniformly to improve the understating of Ly α emitting galaxies. zELDA is based online profiles of the commonly used 'shell-model' pre-computed with the full Monte Carlo radiative transfer code LyaRT. Via interpolation between these spectra and the addition of noise, we assemble a suite of realistic Ly α spectra which we use to train …
