"The expensive process of grinding the insulating brick and the slow production methods of hand forming led to the possibilities of dry pressing the brick. The use of the dry press would increase production, give greater uniformity to the brick and materially reduce grinding if not eliminating it entirely. Since present day combustives were either impractical or else impossible to use, some new material must be found. Three materials presented themselves, napthalene, sulfur, and petroleum coke. The former for its low melting temperature and the latter two for their complete volatility at high temperatures and low if not negligible resiliency. …

"There are two districts in Missouri in which plastic fire clay occurs. The oldest and least significant of these deposits is the "Cheltenham", in the St. Louis area. The most prominent area in which plastic fire clay occurs is generally termed the "east central" district. Included in this district are Calloway, Montgomery, Audrain, Warren, Boone, Monroe, Pike and Lincoln Counties. The clay as tested in this report occurs in Boone County, near Columbia. A plastic fire clay does not have as high a P.C.E. (pyrometric cone equivalent) as the ordinary flint and semi-flint clays, but its high plasticity warrants its …

"This investigation was undertaken to study the refractory blocks used in glass furnaces - their relation with the molten glass. It was decided to employ for this examination a model glass tank, heated by electrical carborundum resistors known as Globars. Experimental glass tanks have been constructed using fuel oil or gas to obtain the required heat to perform melting. These fuels were used mainly to simulate commercial practice and thus to obtain results which could be easily applied to industrial furnaces. The design of a model electric tank is included as part of this investigation"--Purpose of the Investigation, page 4-5.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the base exchange reaction occurring in Carthage marble as a possible cause of unusually rapid disintegration of Carthage marble which has been widely observed in various localities and under certain conditions. If this were found to be the principal cause of such disintegration the groundwork would be laid for research on a means of preventing it. According to Mr. R. E. Since this metal is known to exist in molybdenite, it was felt that a study of the products of the metallurgical processing of this mineral might reveal a source of rhenium that could e developed. The Climax Molybdenum Co. provided a number of samples from their smelter at Langloth, Pennsylvania. "The United States Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Rolla has recently been conducting an intensive investigation of the amenability of Arkansas red ores to enrichment by standard ore dressing methods. These Arkansas ores are low grade with the estimated reserves running into several million tons. They can be concentrated to meet all Grade B ferromanganese specifications - with the exception of that of the phosphorus content, but in all cases the phosphorus is so high as to make the ore worthless under present conditions. "Conodonts were discovered in the limestones of the Marathon region in the Big Bend country, Brewster County, Texas, as a result of field work during the summer of 1939. This was not the first known occurrence of these fossils from this region, however, as King earlier mentioned the occurrence of conodonts in siliceous shales of Devonian age. The discovery of conodonts in the Ordovician and Pennsylvanian limestones of the area had its inception in the attempt to determine whether the Dimple limestone (lower Pennsylvanian) or Maravillas limestone (upper Ordovician) was involved in a fault that was being mapped. I SCOPE OF THIS REPORT It has been mentioned repeatedly in previous Reports that the spot welds in the web joining the two parts of the beam tended to pull apart at the supports. It is therefore obvious that, in order to properly design such beams, this fact must be taken into consideration.
