The Properties Of Cold Rolled - Stress Relief Annealed 70-30 Cartridge Brass, Robert F. Hartmann

Professional Degree Theses

"Because of the possible commercial application of the proposed treatment of 70-30 brass, this work was undertaken. In addition, the data resulting from this work will result in a better understanding of the treatment of brass.

The objectives of this work were as follows:

  1. Determine if higher strength and better spring properties can be realized from a process for commercial 70-30 cartridge brass wherein the regular recrystallizing anneals between rolling reductions are replaced by stress relief anneals.
  2. Determine if it is possible, using the above process, to produce essentially fully recrystallized metal with an average grain size below that usually …

Naval Shipyard Workload Distribution, Leonard Charles Wolff Jan 1955

Naval Shipyard Workload Distribution, Leonard Charles Wolff

Professional Degree Theses

"In developing the subject of Naval Shipyard workload distribution emphasis will be given to the functions performed by the Workload Planning Branch of the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, Washington, D. C.

If the naval ship repair and conversion workload for the next few years was firm, and if the workload remained constant, and if sufficient funds were available for the work, and if plans, materials and equipment were available, and if the employment level to accomplish the work assigned to the naval shipyards remained constant, the Bureau of Ships' problem of scheduling work would be minimized. The only problem …

Aspects Of Quality Control In Foreign Manufacturing Operations, Erich Rolaff Jan 1955

Aspects Of Quality Control In Foreign Manufacturing Operations, Erich Rolaff

Professional Degree Theses

"The present thesis is being written to illustrate some aspects of quality control in foreign manufacturing operations; that is, foreign to the United States. It is obvious that the conditions and probable variations from U. S. practice in any manufacturing industry will vary tremendously according to the industry under review. In the present case we shall be dealing with manufacturing operations involving the production of so-called "dry cells" and "dry batteries", and to a somewhat lesser degree with the production of projector arc carbons for use in motion picture theater projection. It will be, therefore, helpful if a brief history …

The Experimental Fabrication Of Titanium Magazines For 3 Inch 50 Caliber Twin And Single Gun Mounts, John Marshall Thorp Jan 1955

The Experimental Fabrication Of Titanium Magazines For 3 Inch 50 Caliber Twin And Single Gun Mounts, John Marshall Thorp

Professional Degree Theses

"The element titanium was discovered in 1790 by the Reverend William Gregor an Englishman from Cornwall England. Titanium is ninth in abundance or o.62 percent of the total of the elements making up the lithosphere. It is exceeded in amount only by oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium. Titanium is a constituent of practically all crystalline rocks and of sediments derived from them. Its chief mineralogical occurrence is as oxides in such minerals as ilmenite and rutile, which are the chief ores of titanium metal….

The titanium metal used in the project discussed in this thesis was …

Further Studies Of Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, Herbert Benjamin Sachs Jan 1955

Further Studies Of Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, Herbert Benjamin Sachs

Masters Theses

"The freezing points of the ternary system methanol-glycol-water have been investigated by Conrad, Hill and Ballman. The vapor-liquid equilibria of the same system was studied by Sjoberg. These investigations were carried out to determine the properties of the system relative to its possible use as an antifreeze mixture.

Since Sjoberg's work in 1948, the improved Othmer equilibrium still has been introduced for vapor-liquid experimental determinations. It is therefore the purpose of the present investigation to evaluate the use of this still, compare results with those obtained by Sjoberg, and analyze ternary mixtures for the entire range of glycol concentrations.

The …

Mechanical Vibration Of Vacuum Tubes, Jerry Dale Swearingen Jan 1955

Mechanical Vibration Of Vacuum Tubes, Jerry Dale Swearingen

Masters Theses

"Since the beginning of the art of vacuum tube building, vacuum tube engineers have been faced with many mechanical problems as well as electrical problems.

Early mechanical problems were comparatively small because most of the tubes were used in stationary apparatus where little or no vibration was envolved.

As time went on, vacuum tubes were placed in portable equipment and this useage established the need for a tube that was mechanically strong enough to give reliable electrical behavior where the tube was subjected to considerable vibration….

Recently it has been shown that vacuum tubes operating in the instrument cabins of …

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill Jan 1955

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to investigate the ion exchange behavior of germanium and apply the anion exchange technique for the separation of germanium, cadmium, lead, and zinc.

A new interest in germanium has developed because of its recent industrial application as a semi-conductor. Analytical methods for the separation and analysis of germanium in low concentrations have not been perfected. Krause and Johnson, in a recent review, discussed and evaluated a number of methods.

Most of the methods for the analysis of germanium require a preliminary separation. The analytical methods for germanium reported in the literature are troublesome and …

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich Jan 1955

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich

Masters Theses

"The object of this work was to study the reaction between ethylene oxide and ketene, and if possible, to isolate and identify the postulated γ-butyrolactone. Although the results could hardly be described as completely gratifying, they were at least in a sense positive. Many possibilities remain with regard to further modifications of the experimental work on this problem, however it is the author's sincere wish that this investigation will serve some useful purpose in the future"--Introduction, page 4.

The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Howard Martin Brown Jan 1955

The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Howard Martin Brown

Masters Theses

"The thermal conductivity of solids has been attributed to a combined effect of the quantized vibration of the lattice points, called phonons, and the flow of valence electrons. In nonconductors the thermal conductivity is due almost entirely to phonons, as was shown by Debye, whereas in metals the conductivity is due mostly to the flow of valence electrons. After Debye, Peierls calculated the lattice conductivity at elevated temperatures using quantum mechanics and demonstrated that it is proportional to 1/T. There are not enough data available to substantiate any theory but what data there are seem to indicate a mixed conductivity …

Deposition Of Titanium By Gaseous Reaction, Louis John Reitsma Jr. Jan 1955

Deposition Of Titanium By Gaseous Reaction, Louis John Reitsma Jr.

Masters Theses

"Previous investigations undertaken at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy on the deposition of titanium involved the use of fused salt baths, aqueous solutions, and cementation processes. The fused salt baths produced satisfactory coatings on small metal parts. Some difficulty was encountered however, when the coating of large articles was attempted.

For this reason, it was decided to investigate the possibility of titanium deposition by the reaction of a volatile titanium compound with a metal surface. Two different compounds were proposed for investigation, (1) a lower chloride of titanium and (2) an iodide of titanium. The reaction with the …

A Study Of Tunnel Demolition By Hasty Methods, Richard Lee Bullock Jan 1955

A Study Of Tunnel Demolition By Hasty Methods, Richard Lee Bullock

Masters Theses

"The use of explosives to construct obstacles which impede the enemy or close his routes of communication has long been employed by our armies. They have developed fairly effective methods for destroying bridges, setting up road craters and constructing abatis. However, one phase of obstacle construction, that of tunnel demolition, has been neglected in that no procedures or methods have been formulated which will aid in the proper destruction of tunnels.

At the present time, under the auspices of the Department of the Army, The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy is conducting a research program on tunnel demolition. The …

A Study Of The Structure Of Titanium Diffusion Coatings On Iron And Steel, Pao-Jen Chao Jan 1955

A Study Of The Structure Of Titanium Diffusion Coatings On Iron And Steel, Pao-Jen Chao

Masters Theses

"The Problem of the Thesis: A series of experiments have been made in the Metallurgical. Engineering Department of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy for the investigation of titanium diffusion coatings. The technique of applying the titanium diffusion coatings on iron and steel is still in the experimental stage. A few of the physical properties and chemical compositions of such coatings have been determined, but the structures have not yet been extensively studied. As the correlations of the structures and the desirable properties are valuable for improving the quality or titanium diffusion coatings on iron and steel, an investigation …

Nanbo₃ - Batio₃ - Basno₃ Ceramic Dielectrics, William Dean Mckee Jan 1955

Nanbo₃ - Batio₃ - Basno₃ Ceramic Dielectrics, William Dean Mckee

Doctoral Dissertations

"A. The Problem.

The purpose of this investigation was to form by ceramic processes a number of compositions in the ternary system NaNbO3 - BaSnO3 - BaTiO3, to determine certain dielectric properties of these, to study them by means or x-ray diffraction, and to determine the extent or correlation possible between the compositional variation of dielectric properties and the x-ray results.

Compositions investigated contained 50 mole percent or less BaSnO3. Materials and methods of forming were chosen with the intent that the final bodies should be pure oxide compositions as represented in the ternary …

Preparation And Separation Of Metallic Chlorides, Norbert Felix Neumann Jan 1955

Preparation And Separation Of Metallic Chlorides, Norbert Felix Neumann

Doctoral Dissertations

"The use of chlorine and chlorine compounds as metallurgical reagents has long been known to the metallurgical industry. Recent developments in corrosion resistant metals and alloys as well as new equipment and techniques have led to a revival of chlorine processes. Many of the objections to the use of chlorine in metallurgical operations have been overcome and many are being reconsidered, as evidenced by the new processes in which chlorine and chlorides are the primary reagents. The Betterton process employs chlorine or lead chloride for the dezincing of lead. Ductile zirconium and titanium have been made by reducing their chlorides …

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr. Jan 1955

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr.

Masters Theses

"Thus, the determination of the structure of the material, and obtaining a distribution function which will enable the theoretical scattering to be predicted is the major problem.

In this work the diffraction material shall be considered to contain scattering regions of identical geometrical forms at such a distance from one another that they will essentially scatter the incident beam independently of their closest neighbor. An effort will be made to determine a correlation function characteristic of these forms, which may be interpreted as a distribution function, that might allow the low angle scattering pattern to be predicted. This correlation function …

A Study Of Titanium Diffusion Coatings By X-Ray Fluorescent Methods, Alan Bernard Burgess Jan 1955

A Study Of Titanium Diffusion Coatings By X-Ray Fluorescent Methods, Alan Bernard Burgess

Masters Theses

"As the only previous determinations of the chemical composition of the titanium coatings had been analyses of the average composition of the entire coating, the determination of the variation in chemical composition throughout the coating was suggested. From this information, it was proposed that a better insight might be gained as to the extent and mechanism of diffusion in the coatings. It was also hoped to correlate the results with concurrent work being done on the phases present in the titanium coatings. From this correlation, it might be possible to show which phases are responsible for the desirable properties of …

The Preparation Of Titanium Tetrachloride From Rutile, Nalin Sen Jan 1955

The Preparation Of Titanium Tetrachloride From Rutile, Nalin Sen

Masters Theses

"In recent years, considerable interest has been shown in the manufacture of titanium metal because of its outstanding properties both physical and chemical. The commercial process for the preparation of metallic titanium, known as the Kroll process, consists essentially of the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce titanium metal with magnesium chloride as a by-product.

Since, titanium tetrachloride is the basic compound from which to prepare metallic titanium by the Kroll process, much thought has been given to the preparation of titanium tetrachloride from titanium ores such as rutile or ilmenite.

The present work …
