Theory Of The Effect Of Temperature On The Electron Diffraction Patterns Of Diatomic Molecules, Russell A. Bonham, Jerry Peacher May 1963

Theory Of The Effect Of Temperature On The Electron Diffraction Patterns Of Diatomic Molecules, Russell A. Bonham, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of temperature on the electron diffraction pattern of a diatomic molecule is considered from the standpoint of the simple kinematic scattering theory utilizing a quartic vibrational potential. The potential is obtained by an expansion of ħ2J( J+1)/2μr2+D exp[-2a(r-re)]-2D exp[-a(r-re)] about its minimum value r0. The second-order wavefunction for the nth vibrational and 7th rotational state of the system has been obtained, and expressions for the electron diffraction quantities rg, le 2, and M (s) have been computed. General results for the quantity M (s) …

Magnetic Structure Investigations At The Nuclear Center, R. Ballestracci, E. F. Bertaut, J. Coing-Boyat, A. Delapalme, William Joseph James, R. Lemaire, R. Pauthenet, G. Roult Apr 1963

Magnetic Structure Investigations At The Nuclear Center, R. Ballestracci, E. F. Bertaut, J. Coing-Boyat, A. Delapalme, William Joseph James, R. Lemaire, R. Pauthenet, G. Roult

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The magnetic structure of the compounds UOS, ß-CoSO4, YCO5, and HoCO5 is briefly described.

UOS is antiferromagnetic. The Néel temperature is Tn=55°K. The magnetic cell is doubled in the c direction with a ++ - - sequence of U moments along c. The apparent spin is S∼1. The negative interaction corresponds to U-O-U links.

In ß-CoSO4 (high-temperature modification, space group Pbnm), Co atoms are in 000, 00½, ½½½, ½½0. Here three different antiferromagnetic spin modes, mutually perpendicular, Ax(+ - - +), Gy(+-+-), and Cz(++ - - …

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher Feb 1963

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In Progress Report No.1, it was reported that the initial conception of the problem was that diaphragms act almost exclusively in shear when called upon to brace compression members, and that it had been decided to test single columns with finite widths of diaphragm attached, with width of the sheet being varied to provide a range of lateral support up to that which permitted full column strength, based on strong axis to be developed. However, the first test of this kind, Test CB-l, clearly indicated that the diaphragm acted essentially in flexure only and thus had the same effect …

The Chemical Oxidation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonates With Potassium Permanganate., Rameshchandra M. Patel Jan 1963

The Chemical Oxidation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonates With Potassium Permanganate., Rameshchandra M. Patel

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical oxidation of alkyl benzene sulfonates with potassium permanganate. ABS concentrations of 3, 5 and 10 mg/1, and potassium permanganate dosages of 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/1 were used. The study was made in deionized water at room temperature and a pH value of 8.5. A 5-hour detention period was provided. The ABS concentration, potassium permanganate concentration, foam volume and foam stability were the main parameters employed.

It was found that potassium permanganate significantly reduced the ABS concentration and foam volume. The rate of the oxidation …

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin Jan 1963

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin

Masters Theses

"The problem presented is a study, by simulation on an analog computer, of a time optimum "bang bang" control system with a second order plant. Phase plane analysis techniques are used to describe the performance of the second order plant under the action of a maximum effort controller. From this, the system logic is developed for time optimum response to a step reference input. A fast time model of the plant is used to obtain repeated high-speed extrapolations of the plant outputs, at the same time a linear predictor generates future values of the reference. The error functions thus found …

Liquid Mercury Embrittlement Of Thin-Walled 2024 Aluminum Tubes, Edward J. Beckemeyer Jan 1963

Liquid Mercury Embrittlement Of Thin-Walled 2024 Aluminum Tubes, Edward J. Beckemeyer

Masters Theses

"The dislocation theory, Zener-Stroh crack model, and the Petch relationship, which correlates fracture stress and grain size, were used to analyze the embrittlement of 2024 aluminum alloy tubes by liquid mercury.

Surface energy ratios, [formula], were determined for biaxial stress ratios of 1/2, 1, ∞. The values of the surface energy ratios considered were 4.24, 1.79, 1.46, respectively. As part of this study, an approximate Nabarro-Peierls frictional stress was calculated for each stress ratio"--Abstract, page 2.

A Study Of Methods For Estimating Parameters In Rational Polynomial Models, Thomas B. Baird Jan 1963

A Study Of Methods For Estimating Parameters In Rational Polynomial Models, Thomas B. Baird

Masters Theses

“The use of rational polynomials for approximating surfaces is investigated in this study. In particular, methods for estimating parameters for a rational polynomial model were investigated.

A method is presented for finding initial estimates of the parameters. Two iterative methods are discussed for improving those estimates in an attempt to minimize the sum of the squares of the residuals. These two methods are (1) Scarborough’s Method for applying the theory of least squares to nonlinear models and (2) the Method of Steepest Descent.

Data from two functions were chosen and approximated as illustrations. Each set of data was used two …
