A Numerical Study Of Van Der Pol's Nonlinear Differential Equation For Various Values Of The Parameter E., Charles C. Limbaugh Jan 1964

A Numerical Study Of Van Der Pol's Nonlinear Differential Equation For Various Values Of The Parameter E., Charles C. Limbaugh

Masters Theses

"This paper briefly reviews the geometric concepts associated with nonlinear differential equations and then proceeds to a study of the homogeneous van der Pol equation. After studying the method of Kryloff and Bogoliuboff for small values of the parameter €, the author makes a numerical study of the equation using Hamrning's Method for the numerical solution. Several trajectories and the phase plane are shown for E = 0.1, 1.0, and 5.0. The author then studies one of the analytic theories, i.e., the method of Cartwright and Littlewood, and indicates some of the other analyses for large €"--Abstract, p. ii

A Thermodynamic Study Of The Zirconium-Sulfur, Titanium-Sulfur And Hafnium-Sulfur Systems In The Disulfide-Trisulfide Region, Norbert Achilles Vermaut Jan 1964

A Thermodynamic Study Of The Zirconium-Sulfur, Titanium-Sulfur And Hafnium-Sulfur Systems In The Disulfide-Trisulfide Region, Norbert Achilles Vermaut

Doctoral Dissertations

"A static method was used to study the equilibria which exist between the higher sulfides of zirconium and sulfur at temperatures from 700° to 1000 °C. Both disulfide and trisulfide have been identified by chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction. There exists a two-phase region of 'ZrS2' and 'ZrS3'. The composition limit of the homogeneous disulfide phase appears to exist between ZrS1.90 and ZrS2.00. The lower composition limit of the homogeneous region of the trisulfide phase was established as ZrS2.75.

An experimental method of Blitz and co-workers, i.e., the use of evacuated …

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch Jan 1964

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch

Doctoral Dissertations

"The field of mass transfer is one of great interest to the chemical engineer. An understanding of this field is vital in the design of many types of chemical processing equipment, particularly in the areas of distillation, extraction, absorption, adsorption, and reactor analysis and design.

However, much of the knowledge in this area at the present time is in the form of empirical relationships, and the basic theory is still not well delineated. This lack of understanding leads to expensive and over-sized or under-sized equipment.

A particular area within this field which needs additional investigation is the theory of mass …

Petrology And Mineralogy Of Certain Portions Of The Fredericktown Deposits, Farouk El Baz Jan 1964

Petrology And Mineralogy Of Certain Portions Of The Fredericktown Deposits, Farouk El Baz

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Fredericktown area is part of the 'Lead Belt' district of southeastern Missouri, the major lead-producing region in the world for fifty years. The district is a typical example of the Mississippi Valley Type deposits. The ores occur in Upper Cambrian sediments overlying Precambrian rocks.

The Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn (-Co-Ni) - sulphide deposits of Fredericktown occur over a few square kilometers in sediments overlying two 'granite knobs'. The sedimentary units lap upon and pinch-out against these buried basement hills.

The basal sedimentary unit, the Lamotte Formation, is a time-transgressive, marine, submature orthoquartzite. It contains a Boulder Bed at the base or at …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Nitrate Solution., Jo Lisle Reed Jan 1964

The Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Nitrate Solution., Jo Lisle Reed

Masters Theses

"The increasing demand for protective metals as coatings and non-corrosive alloys has stimulated extensive research on the fundamental behavior of metals in corrosive media.

One of the problems still unsolved is the nature of the mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals like zinc, magnesium, beryllium, cadmium, and aluminum in aqueous salt solutions. Several schools of investigators have proposed different and opposing theories to explain the discrepancies which often arise between coulometric data and the weight loss of metal electrodes in certain salt solutions.

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain experimental data for the anodic dissolution of zinc …

The Prediction Of The Viscosity Of Multi-Component Non-Polar Gaseous Mixtures At Atmospheric Pressure., Gary D. Fehsenfeld Jan 1964

The Prediction Of The Viscosity Of Multi-Component Non-Polar Gaseous Mixtures At Atmospheric Pressure., Gary D. Fehsenfeld

Masters Theses

"The applicability of the Strunk, Custead, and Stevenson method for predicting the viscosities of multicomponent, non-polar, gaseous mixtures vas investigated. The viscosities of 24 ternary and quaternary gaseous mixtures were experimentally determined, at 3 temperature levels, and compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities resulting from the prediction method. In addition, the published viscosities of 64 multicomponent mixtures were compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities.

Altogether, the viscosities of 136 multicomponent, non-polar, gaseous mixtures were compared. The mixtures contained from 3 to 7 components including 16 different gases in the temperature range from 5• to 1014 ° c, and at a …

A Study Of Rotational Critical Speeds For A Multi-Mass System By Influence Coefficients, Kantikumar G. Patel Jan 1964

A Study Of Rotational Critical Speeds For A Multi-Mass System By Influence Coefficients, Kantikumar G. Patel

Masters Theses

"In this investigation an attempt has been made to determine the critical speeds of a multi-mass rotational system by using influence coefficients. Modes of vibrations are also examined at these critical speeds.

A shaft carrying five masses, supported by bearings at the ends, has been studied analytically. The length of the bearings is considered small with respect to the shaft length and therefore, the configuration is assumed to be point supported as a simple beam. The five masses, each weighing one pound, were placed at equal distances of 10 inches on a 60 inch shaft. The critical speed was examined …

Lattice Parameters, Thermal Expansion Coefficients, Densities, And Imperfections In Silver And In The Alpha-Phase Of The Silver-Indium System, Samir Moustafa Riad Jan 1964

Lattice Parameters, Thermal Expansion Coefficients, Densities, And Imperfections In Silver And In The Alpha-Phase Of The Silver-Indium System, Samir Moustafa Riad

Doctoral Dissertations

“An investigation of structure insensitive properties (lattice parameters, thermal expansion coefficients, densities, and imperfections) of silver and the α-phase of the silver-indium system was suggested by the desirable uses for silver and its indium alloys.

Both silver and indium used were 99.999 per cent pure. The silver-indium alloys were prepared by melting both metals inside evacuated and sealed fused quartz tubes. The solidified alloys were annealed and then examined by X-ray diffraction for homogeneity.

This experimental work is divided into three main parts:-

I. X-ray diffraction investigation to determine the solid solubility limit of the Ag-In α-phase at 25° C, …

On The Kirkwood Superposition Approximation, Russell V. Cochran Jr. Jan 1964

On The Kirkwood Superposition Approximation, Russell V. Cochran Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"When the Kirkwood superposition approximation for the triplet distribution function is used in the Born-Green equation for the pair distribution function of a liquid, the fourth virial coefficient is given incorrectly. In view of this, two suggestions for improving the approximation have been investigated. A suggestion, due to G.H.A. Cole, that better results could be obtained by using a second-order integro-differential equation of the Born-Green type with the superposition approximation used for both the triplet and quadruplet distribution functions has been investigated, and results for a hard-sphere model show that this method gives considerably less reliable results than those obtained …

Mechanism Of Siliconizing Of Molybdenum And Tantalum By Vapor Deposition, Gordon Pu Kong Chu Jan 1964

Mechanism Of Siliconizing Of Molybdenum And Tantalum By Vapor Deposition, Gordon Pu Kong Chu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Molybdenum and tantalum were siliconized in an enclosed system by the hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride with induction heating between 900°C and 1450°C.

The siliconizing process was primarily influenced by the gaseous composition, temperature, time, molar flow ratio (SiCl4/H2), geometrical shape and ionization charges. The rate of siliconizing, measured as the weight gain by the fused quartz helix balance, generally follows a parabolic law, y = k t1/2, where y = weight gain, t = time, and k = rate constant. The activation energy is estimated at 21.6 k cal/mole for siliconizing of molybdenum. …

Decay Of Intensity Of Certain Hg Lines In An Hg-Ar Discharge, Edward E. Stepp, Richard A. Anderson Oct 1963

Decay Of Intensity Of Certain Hg Lines In An Hg-Ar Discharge, Edward E. Stepp, Richard A. Anderson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The afterglow of four mercury spectral lines was examined in a mercury-argon electric discharge. The 2537- Å line decays in a complex fashion with three definite modes of decay. The 4077-, 4358-, and 5461- Å lines exhibited an even more complicated decay. These lines exhibited an initial rapid decay followed by an increase in intensity. Finally the intensity of these lines went through two maxima before they decayed in intensity at a slow constant rate. The actual intensity behavior of the 2537- Å line was masked by the imprisonment of resonance radiation. It is postulated that the main processes governing …
