This paper covers model-based fault detection and isolation for linear and nonlinear distributed parameter systems (DPS). The first part mainly deals with actuator, sensor and state fault detection and isolation for a class of DPS represented by a set of coupled linear partial differential equations (PDE). A filter based observer is designed based on the linear PDE representation using which a detection residual is generated. A fault is detected when the magnitude of the detection residual exceeds a detection threshold. Upon detection, several isolation estimators are designed using filters whose output residuals are compared with predefined isolation thresholds. A fault …

Radio frequency interference can degrade the receiving sensitivity of antennas. The interference is usually caused by certain coupling structures, such as layouts without adequate grounding for the radio frequency signal return path. Those structures can be modeled as a set of equivalent dipole moments when they are electrically small. Herein, the dipole moment model-based coupling framework is applied to a practical cellphone design case to devise an engineering solution. The coupling framework incorporates dipole moments as radiation sources and a coupling model based on the reciprocity theorem. Unfortunately, near-field scan probes often lack access to all locations, owing to the …

An effective extension to the particle swarm optimizer scheme has been developed to visualize and modelize robustly magnetic data acquired across vertical or dipping faults. This method can be applied to magnetic data sets that support various investigations, including mining, fault hazards assessment, and hydrocarbon exploration. The inversion algorithm is established depending on the second horizontal derivative technique and the particle swarm optimizer algorithm and was utilized for multi-source models. Herein, the inversion method is applied to three synthetic models (a dipping fault model contaminated without and with different Gaussian noises levels, a dipping fault model affected by regional anomaly, …

The frequency and duration of Late-Holocene hydrologic extremes in northern Guatemala were investigated using multiple sedimentological and geochemical proxies preserved in a sediment core collected from Lake Petén Itzá. A general trend of increasing aridity in the Maya Lowlands during the past 2000 years was punctuated by several multidecadal- to centennial-scale drought events recorded in the Petén Itzá sediments. In particular, the period spanning the Maya Terminal Classic Period and the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), between 800 and 1300 CE, was marked by several extreme droughts and included the driest conditions of the past 2000 years between 950 and 1100 …

Virtual machine (VM) migration enables cloud service providers (CSPs) to balance workload, perform zero-downtime maintenance, and reduce applications' power consumption and response time. Migrating a VM consumes energy at the source, destination, and backbone networks, i.e., intermediate routers and switches, especially in a Geo-distributed setting. In this context, we propose a VM migration model called Low Energy Application Workload Migration (LEAWM) aimed at reducing the per-bit migration cost in migrating VMs over Geo-distributed clouds. With a Geo-distributed cloud connected through multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs), we develop an approach to find out the migration path across ISPs leading to the …

There is a dire need to rebuild existing infrastructure with strategic and efficient methods. Design-build (DB) becomes a potential solution that provides fast-tracked delivery as a more time and cost-efficient project delivery method. Past research studied factors influencing DB but without providing a holistic analytic approach. This paper fills this knowledge gap. First, a systematic literature review is performed using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses techniques, and a set of factors affecting DB projects are then identified and clustered, using k-means clustering, based on the whole literature discussions. Second, a graph theory approach, social network analysis …

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a high-risk dementia condition which progresses to probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) at approximately 10% to 15% per year. Characterization of group-level differences between two subtypes of MCI - stable MCI (sMCI) and progressive MCI (pMCI) is the key step to understand the mechanisms of MCI progression and enable possible delay of transition from MCI to AD. Functional connectivity (FC) is considered as a promising way to study MCI progression since which may show alterations even in preclinical stages and provide substrates for AD progression. However, the representative FC patterns during AD development for different clinical …
The Application Of Statistical Modeling To Identify Genetic Associations With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Outcomes, Caroline Schott
The Application Of Statistical Modeling To Identify Genetic Associations With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Outcomes, Caroline Schott
Masters Theses
"Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a growing health concern, with millions of TBI diagnoses in the United States each year. The vast majority of TBI diagnoses are mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), which can be challenging to manage due to variation in symptoms and outcomes. Most individuals with mTBI successfully recover quickly, but a small subset has a delayed recovery. Although the factors that contribute to this variation in recovery are not clearly understood, it is possible that genetic differences may play a role. Very few studies have investigated the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with mTBI outcomes and …

"The highly contaminated subsurface matrix of the Baird and McGuire Superfund site is currently threatening the health and safety of the surrounding environment of Holbrook, MA. Contaminants of significant concern due to high concentration are inorganic arsenite and petroleum hydrocarbons, such as naphthalene. Parsons Corporation and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection have implemented a bioremediation pilot to attempt to degrade the hydrocarbons and arsenic with the application of nitrate. The nitrate would act as an electron acceptor for biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants, produce nitrite that would oxidize reduced iron, and iron oxides would sequester arsenic. Preliminary data showed …

Evaluation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Autoimmune Disease: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Hailey Nicole Swain
Masters Theses
"Mesenchymal stem cells, also known as multipotential stem/progenitor cells and mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells, are denoted by the acronym MSCs. MSCs can differentiate into multiple lineages from different germ layers in vitro, and in limited situations, in vivo. MSCs have broad anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory properties, which is the greatest focus of MSCs in clinical testing. Despite their promise and use in over 950 clinical trials, pivotal questions remain unanswered. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated that when MSCs are harvested from autoimmune patients, they show a reduction in their therapeutic efficacy in comparison to MSCs from a healthy person. Identifying quality MSCs …

Prediction And Root-Cause Analysis For Smart Speaker Intentional Electromagnetic Interference Attacks, Tanner Fokkens
Masters Theses
"Smart home and Internet of Things (IoT) devices have become ubiquitous in homes over the past decade. The smart speaker itself is often the device that interfaces all these devices together. Because of this, the smart speaker can become a point of attack for someone trying to exploit or hack into the smart home devices. In the past few years, it was discovered that smart speakers with microwave electromechanical system (MEMS) microphones are susceptible to intentional electromagnetic interference (I-EMI) attacks by modulating an audio command to a high-frequency carrier signal. This attack allows for command recognition for long-distances and smart …
Improved Decap Model And Placement Optimization Algorithm For Power Distribution Network Design, Jack Juang
Improved Decap Model And Placement Optimization Algorithm For Power Distribution Network Design, Jack Juang
Masters Theses
"Decoupling capacitors (decaps) are used in power distribution network (PDN) design to act as a low impedance return path for noise and act as a local source of charge when required by integrated circuits (IC). For placement of decaps, which can number even to the hundreds, many algorithms have been proposed including genetic algorithms (GA), iterative algorithm, and machine learning methods.
One limitation of iterative decap placement algorithms (adding one decap at a time) is how the construction of the algorithm affects the form of the final solution. For example, if the reward function (used in GA and machine learning …

A Real-Time Microwave Camera Using Zero-Bias Diode Detector, Liang Liu
Masters Theses
"This thesis presents the design of a microwave camera that utilizes a two-dimensional array of elliptical slot antennas and diode detectors to quickly and accurately locate radiation sources. Unlike traditional scanning techniques like ESM and holography, which rely on mechanical scanning, require a long measurement time, and are prone to mechanical errors, the microwave camera operates quickly and efficiently by using electronic switching to access the output of each detector. This results in a more precise and efficient means of locating radiation sources'--Abstract, p. iii

"Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a popular technique for studying Earth's surface deformation caused by phenomena like earthquakes and subsidence. However, its accuracy is limited by tropospheric delays caused by water vapor in the atmosphere. This limitation can be overcome by using methods that correct for tropospheric noise, such as statistical, empirical, and predictive approaches. This study explores the potential of using machine learning algorithms to predict the zenith total delay caused by tropospheric effects in InSAR measurements. The study employs two different machine learning algorithms, random forest and neural networks, to learn the relationship between numerical weather prediction …
Optimizing The Placement Of Multiple Uav--Lidar Units Under Road Priority And Resolution Requirements, Zachary Michael Osterwisch
Optimizing The Placement Of Multiple Uav--Lidar Units Under Road Priority And Resolution Requirements, Zachary Michael Osterwisch

"Real-time road traffic information is crucial for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications, like traffic navigation or emergency response management, but acquiring such data is tremendously challenging in practice because of the high costs and inefficient placement of sensors. Some modern ITS applications contribute to this problem by equipping vehicles with multiple light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors, which are expensive and gather data inefficiently; one solution that avoids vehicle-mounted LiDAR acquisition has been to install elevated LiDAR instruments along roadways, but this approach remains unrefined. The eventual development of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication will enable new, creative solutions to solve …

"Owing to its broad use and environmental persistence, 1,4-dioxane (dioxane) poses a notable threat to public health and is recalcitrant to traditional remedial systems. Dioxane moves readily in an aqueous environment and is an emerging contaminant in drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. The extent of dioxane in the biosphere is also difficult to delineate, particularly in the subsurface. Phytoremediation has demonstrated the potential for dioxane groundwater remediation. Recent findings indicate that plant-microbial symbiosis may be more advantageous for limiting potential transport and transfer into plant tissues and the atmosphere. Bioaugmentation of the rhizosphere paired with soil amendments has …
