This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a diversification mechanism for building a more robust multi-attention system in generic facial action analysis. While previous multi-attention (e.g., visual attention and self-attention) research on facial expression recognition (FER) and Action Unit (AU) detection have been thoroughly studied to focus on "external attention diversification", where attention branches localize different facial areas, we delve into the realm of "internal attention diversification" and explore the impact of diverse attention patterns within the same Region of Interest (RoI). Our experiments reveal that variability in attention patterns significantly impacts model performance, indicating that unconstrained multi-attention plagued by redundancy …

The marine structures are usually exposed to dynamic loadings within short periods and chemical attacks, resulting in severe dynamical damage or failure to concrete structures. The study of the time-dependent changes in the dynamic mechanical behavior of coral concrete under different corrosive environments and low-frequency waves is limited. For the safety and reliable use of coral concrete in the marine environment, different corrosion environments (chloride ions, sulfate ions, and mixed chloride-sulfate ions) and low-frequency waves (0.5–2.0 Hz) were designed to evaluate the dynamic properties of concrete. A model considering the effect of corroded age is formulated to predict the damping …

High viscosity friction reducers (HVFRs) are widely used as friction-reducing agents and proppant carriers during hydraulic fracturing. The reuse of produced water has gained popularity due to environmental and economic benefits. Currently, the field's most commonly used friction reducers are anionic and cationic HVFRs. Anionic HVFRs are typically pumped with freshwater, while cationic HVFRs are used with high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) produced water. Cationic friction reducers are believed to have better TDS tolerance, friction reduction performance, and proppant transport capabilities compared to anionic friction reducers under high TDS conditions due to their superior viscoelastic properties. In addition, the impact …

With the enhanced usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven applications, the researchers often face challenges in improving the accuracy of the data classification models, while trading off the complexity. In this paper, we address the classification of time series data using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network while focusing on the activation functions. While the existing activation functions such as sigmoid and tanh are used as LSTM internal activations, the customizability of these activations stays limited. This motivates us to propose a new family of activation functions, called log-sigmoid, inside the LSTM cell for time series data classification, and analyze …

An Analytical Method is Commonly Used to Design Relief Well Systems by Assuming the Well Line Extends an Infinite Distance Parallel to the Dam or Levee. This Assumption May Be Met in Some Cases, But When a Well Line is of Finite Length, This Can Severely Underestimate Excess Heads. Although These Consequences Have Been Historically Recognized, a Practical Graph-Based Analytical Approach for Finite Well Line Design Has Not Been Developed. Finite Well Lines Exist and Continue to Be Installed at Many Locations, So This Study Developed a Practical Design Method for Such Systems. Analytical Solutions and Numerical Models Were Used …

The utilization of gas enhanced oil recovery to extract oil from unconventional reservoirs has become a widely discussed topic, as it has proven to be effective in significantly boosting oil recovery rates. Among various enhanced oil recovery methods, Gas Enhanced Oil Recovery (GEOR) is a frequently implemented approach. However, a significant challenge encountered during the process of injecting Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Nitrogen (N2) to displace oil is the occurrence of asphaltene precipitation and deposition, which can impede production. This work is an experimental study to examine the effects of cyclic (huff-n-puff) CO2 or N …

A serious risk to the production safety of coal mines is coal dust. The wettability of coal may be successfully changed by adding surfactants to water. However, the creation of very effective dust suppressants is constrained by the lack of knowledge about the microscopic interaction mechanism between coal dust and surfactants. In this investigation, we explained macroscopic experimental phenomena from a molecular perspective. The lauryl polyoxyethylene ethers (C12 (EO)n, n = 7,15,23) were selected. The macromolecular model of anthracite with 55 different components was constructed. Surface tension experiments and hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) calculations showed that the ability of surface …

The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) calls for an advanced active and reactive power (PQ) control strategy in microgrids. To enhance the controllability and flexibility of the IBRs, this paper proposed an adaptive PQ control method with trajectory tracking capability, combining model-based analysis, physics-informed reinforcement learning (RL), and power hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments. First, model-based analysis proves that there exists an adaptive proportional-integral controller with time-varying gains that can ensure any exponential PQ output trajectory of IBRs. These gains consist of a constant factor and an exponentially decaying factor, which are then obtained using a model-free deep reinforcement learning approach …
