The Water Monomer On The Prism Face Of Ice And Above A Four Layer Ice Basal Face Ledge: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer, Carolyn A. Ward Aug 1981

The Water Monomer On The Prism Face Of Ice And Above A Four Layer Ice Basal Face Ledge: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer, Carolyn A. Ward

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A previous study of the water monomer on the basal faces of ice is extended to consider the interaction of the water molecule with a rigid prism face of ice and with an ice basal face ledge. The effective central force H2O-H2O potentials of Stillinger and Rahman are used to generate maximal binding energy surfaces for the H2O adsorbed on the sample substrates. The results indicate that the prism face of ice binds the water molecule more strongly than the basal faces, and the step on the basal face serves to expose high binding …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The characterization of Co(urea)2Cl2·2H2O is reported. The crystal structure at ambient temperatures yields the following information: the chlorine, water, and urea group are coordinated, the urea being bound via the oxygen, to form an octahedral environment about the metal atom. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the coordinated chlorine and water ligands produce parallel infinite sheets which provide a two-dimensional exchange pathway. The sheets are separated by the urea ligands and may be considered as magnetically isolated from one another. Crystal data: space group P21/c, Z = 2, α = 7.397 (3) Å, b …

Differential Cross Sections For Electron Capture From Helium By 25- To 100-Kev Incident Protons, Paul J. Martin, Kenneth E. Arnett, D. M. Blankenship, Thomas J. Kvale, Jerry Peacher, E. Redd, V. C. Sutcliffe, John T. Park, Chiidong Lin, Jim H. Mcguire

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimentally and theoretically determined differential cross sections are reported for electron capture in collisions of protons with helium atoms for incident proton energies of 25, 30, 50, and 100 keV and for center-of-mass scattering angles of 0.0 to 2.0 mrad. The magnitudes of the experimentally determined differential cross sections decrease from 10-10 to 10-12 cm2/sr within the 0.0-0.8-mrad range of the center-of-mass scattering angle. At approximately 0.8 mrad a distinct change in the slope of the differential cross section is observed. The experimental results which are for capture into all bound states of hydrogen are compared …

Electron Capture At Very Small Scattering Angles From Atomic Hydrogen By 25-125-Kev Protons, Paul J. Martin, D. M. Blankenship, Thomas J. Kvale, E. Redd, Jerry Peacher, John T. Park Jun 1981

Electron Capture At Very Small Scattering Angles From Atomic Hydrogen By 25-125-Kev Protons, Paul J. Martin, D. M. Blankenship, Thomas J. Kvale, E. Redd, Jerry Peacher, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential cross sections for electron capture in collisions between protons and hydrogen atoms have been experimentally determined for incident proton energies of 25, 60, and 125 keV in the center-of-mass scattering-angle range of 0-3 mrad. The experimental results compare more favorably with the results of both a multistate and a two-state calculation than with the results of a continuum distorted-wave-approximation calculation. There is no evidence of a Jackson-Schiff-type minimum.

A Hybrid Metric To Measure Software Complexity, Warren Harrison, Kenneth I. Magel May 1981

A Hybrid Metric To Measure Software Complexity, Warren Harrison, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Technical Reports

Software complexity is an important facet of the software development process, especially in regard to maintenance. A number of complexity metrics have been developed to measure the complexity contributed by: program size, flow of control, data structures, or a combination of two or more of these. Several representative measures from each of these groups are described.

A new hybrid complexity metric, the Extended Scope Metric, is presented and compared with other popular complexity metrics. While the new metric appears to be an improvement over existing metrics due to its enhanced context sensitivity and comprehensiveness, conclusive results cannot be determined until …

Conduction Polarization In Sodium Germanate Glasses, Akira Doi, D. E. Day May 1981

Conduction Polarization In Sodium Germanate Glasses, Akira Doi, D. E. Day

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Only one thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) peak was found in germanate glasses containing from 0.19 to 32.5 mol% Na20, whereas comparable silicate glasses exhibit two such peaks. Equations are developed showing that the distortion of the equilibrium Na+-ion distribution by an applied electrical field produces a polarization in general agreement with the observed TSDC peak. It is proposed that the TSDC peak is due to dc conduction.

A New Soil Model And Dynamic Soil Properties, Y. Gyoten, K. Mizuhata, T. Fukusumi, H. Hamada, T. Hirose Apr 1981

A New Soil Model And Dynamic Soil Properties, Y. Gyoten, K. Mizuhata, T. Fukusumi, H. Hamada, T. Hirose

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A series of cyclic triaxial loading tests with varying strain amplitude were performed on samples of clay and sand. Three types of polynomial functions and a hyperbolic function were applied to express the experimental nonlinear hysteresis curve of soils under cyclic loading conditions. These functions were used for the earthquake response analysis of the actual ground containing alluvial clay layer and of the idealized saturated sandy soil ground whose stiffness gradually decreases as the development of pore-water pressure. The results of the dynamic responses and the liquefaction potential were compared for a particular actual site and an idealized site by …

Creep Effects On Low-Amplitude Modulus Of Clays, G. A. Athanasopoulos, F. E. Richart Jr. Apr 1981

Creep Effects On Low-Amplitude Modulus Of Clays, G. A. Athanasopoulos, F. E. Richart Jr.

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The investigation considered effects of on-going or previous drained creep on the low amplitude dynamic shear modulus of normally consolidated artificial and natural clay soils. Resonant column tests using the Hardin and Hall devices determined the low-amplitude shear modulus. Results indicated that the strain-rate of on-going creep determined the kind of effect on shear modulus. High strain-rates produced reduced values whereas low strain-rates slightly increased values of modulus, compared to the no-creep values. Previous creep produced higher values of modulus, when the clay was tested under after-creep isotropic confinement. The rate of secondary increase of shear modulus was not affected …

The Shear Modulus And Deformation Of Soils Under Cyclic Loading, Ting Hu Apr 1981

The Shear Modulus And Deformation Of Soils Under Cyclic Loading, Ting Hu

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In this paper the dynamic deformation stages of soils under cyclic loading and the major factors affecting the shear modulus of soils are analyzed. The in-situ measurement of surface wave by larger energy source to obtain the shear modulus of the ground is described. On considering the important effect of shearing dilatancy on shear modulus of sandy soils, a modified formula is proposed. For typical soils, the axial strains under cyclic loading are determined either for estimating shear modulus or for the deformation analysis in design.

In Situ Measurement On Dynamic Modulus And Damping Of Pleistocene Soils, H. Mori, H. Tsuchiya

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The paper presents the results of measurement on the dynamic modulus of deformation and damping ratio of dense sand or stiff clay of the Pleistocene epoch using a dynamic pressuremeter. The paper first describes an outline of an instrument and procedures of the dynamic pressuremeter test, which include necessary correction of data for eliminating the influence of compressibility and damping of the instrument. From the results of field measurement, the moduli derived from the dynamic pressuremeter tests were found several times greater than those from laboratory tests which were affected by disturbance of soil samples.

Dynamic Triaxial And Vibratory In-Situ Behavior Of Cohesive Soil, M. S. Ei-Hosri, J. Biarez, P. Y. Hicher Apr 1981

Dynamic Triaxial And Vibratory In-Situ Behavior Of Cohesive Soil, M. S. Ei-Hosri, J. Biarez, P. Y. Hicher

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In-situ and laboratory shear modulus data are presented and compared. In-situ tests included the cross-hole seismic survey at a stiff marl site, while laboratory tests included the cyclic triaxial test on undisturbed specimens obtained from the same site. The cyclic triaxial device presented in this investigation has been developed and improved so that the reliable response of soil can be measured directly from the specimen over a large range of strain (from 10-6 to 10-2 ). A series of cyclic triaxial tests were performed under stress controlled condition over a range of frequency from 0,5 to 10 Hz …

Dynamic Behavior Of Soils From Field And Laboratory Tests, W. P. Grant, F. R. Brown Jr.

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Both geophysical and laboratory tests were used to determine the dynamic shear moduli of medium stiff to hard clays and silts at six sites. The geophysical measurements included conventional downhole tests conducted at low strain levels and modified cross-hole impulse tests conducted over a wide range of strains. Laboratory resonant column and cyclic triaxial tests were performed on soil samples retrieved from borings made at the sites. The results from both the field and laboratory tests of the medium stiff to stiff sols showed fairly good agreement. The laboratory test results of the hard clays and silts, however, were typically …

Monitoring Rock Blasting For Tunnel Construction, P. Deó, D. L. Hanson, K. R. Hindo

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A program for the monitoring of rock blasting operations for the construction of a sewer tunnel has been discussed. A summary of observations together with pertinent conclusions and recommendations regarding the blasting operations, the potential for damage to nearby structures and criteria for safe blasting operations has been presented. It is recommended that peak particle velocity be restricted to two inches per second in horizontal direction at the nearest existing structure to prevent cracking of walls.

Cyclic Simple Shear Of Large Scale Sand Samples: Effects Of Diameter To Height Ratio, W. D. Kovacs, E. Leo Apr 1981

Cyclic Simple Shear Of Large Scale Sand Samples: Effects Of Diameter To Height Ratio, W. D. Kovacs, E. Leo

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Cyclic drained simple shear tests on a dry sand using a 12 in diameter sample with sample heights of 1, 2, and 4 in show the effect of Diameter/Height ratio on the shear modulus and percent of critical hysteretic damping at various shear strain levels. The shear modulus is found to increase with cycle number and with increasing specimen size. The D/H ratio is found to affect the shear modulus at low shear strains (< 1 percent) and found to have little effect at higher shear strains and at failure. The hysteretic damping decreases for all values of shear strain tested (0.01 to 1 percent) as the cycle number and D/H ratio increases. Possible implications on design and pore pressure development are mentioned.

Cyclic Strength Of Undisturbed Mine Tailings, Kenji Ishihara, Susumu Yasuda, Koichiro Yokota Apr 1981

Cyclic Strength Of Undisturbed Mine Tailings, Kenji Ishihara, Susumu Yasuda, Koichiro Yokota

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to update existing regulations for the seismic design of tailings retention dikes, extensive investigations were undertaken for 15 existing tailings dams throughout Japan. Undisturbed samples procured from the tailings disposal ponds were tested ln the laboratory to determine the cyclic strength of the in-situ tailings deposits. The results of cyclic triaxial tests on these materials are summarized by means of empirical formulae which are recommended for incorporation in the new seismic design code for the tailings dams.

Pore Pressure In Silty Sand Under Cyclic Shear, R. L. Wei, T. L. Guo, Y. M. Zuo Apr 1981

Pore Pressure In Silty Sand Under Cyclic Shear, R. L. Wei, T. L. Guo, Y. M. Zuo

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to study the liquefaction phenomena of silty sand, saturated specimens prepared in the laboratory according to the dry unit weight of undisturbed samples are used to examine the cyclic shear resistance, pore pressure and residual shear strain developed in these specimens under cyclic loading. These tests are accomplished with a cyclic simple shear test apparatus developed in Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute. Based on results of these tests expressions of cyclic shear resistance, pore pressure, dynamic shear modulus and residual shear strain as functions of number of cycles, consolidation pressure, initial and cyclic shear stress etc. have been developed.

Estimation Of In-Situ Clay Strengths Using Marine Sediment Penetrators, R. L. Mcneill, A. D. Foster Apr 1981

Estimation Of In-Situ Clay Strengths Using Marine Sediment Penetrators, R. L. Mcneill, A. D. Foster

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A method has been developed to calculate soil shear strengths from the measured decelerations of a free-fall penetrator. The method is easy to apply, and appears to yield accurate estimates of in-situ soil strength over a wide variety of soil conditions, and for many different sizes and weights of penetrators. For gassy and/or sensitive soils, the method may yield strength values more accurate than those determined by conventional boring, sampling, and laboratory testing.

In-Situ Measurements Of Pore Pressures, R. L. Mcneill, E. W. Reece

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

As engineering moves into deeper waters, measurements of soil properties in the laboratory may be highly suspect if the soils are gassy. Strength and pore-pressure data are presented and discussed. A suggestion is made for development of pore-pressure gauges to detect the presence of clathrates.

Mechanical Behavior Of Granite Under Cyclic Compression, V. Rajaram Apr 1981

Mechanical Behavior Of Granite Under Cyclic Compression, V. Rajaram

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A better understanding of soil/rock-structure interaction is invaluable in the seismic design of concrete and masonry structures. In an effort to understand the behavior of rock under cyclic compression, both intact and faulted specimens of Westerly granite (2.5 cm. dia. x 6.25 cm. long) were subjected to uniaxial and triaxial loading at a uniform rate of one cycle per second. The fatigue strength under uniaxial loading at 106 cycles was found to be about 70% of the static compressive strength, and confining pressure improved fatigue resistance considerably. The accumulated permanent strain at the maximum stress level was found to …
