A Stochastic Model For A Small-Time-Interval-Intermittent Hydrologic Process, Charles Darwin Morris
A Stochastic Model For A Small-Time-Interval-Intermittent Hydrologic Process, Charles Darwin Morris
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A methodology is developed for the generation of intermittent small-time-interval (15-min.) precipitation. This methodology consists of three components: a probabilistic wet-and-dry sequence component; a Markovian precipitation distribution component; and a regressive spatial-distribution component. The theory of stochastic hydrologic modeling is described and procedures by which this theory can be applied to a hydrologic time series are presented. In particular, the application of the procedures to small-time-interval-intermittent hydrologic processes is given. The methodology is demonstrated by application to an actual precipitation network, the Boneyard Creek raingage network in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, U.S.A. The trend in frequency of precipitation amounts from the 89-yr. …

The SMEMAX Transformation was tested on samples generated from log-Pearson Type III and Gumbel Extreme Value Type 1 distributions. Although the transformation results in a distribution with a skew near zero, it is not a true normal distribution. The coefficients of kurtosis for the transformed distributions are always less than three and when the parent distribution approaches a reverse-J shape, the transformed distribution is bimodal. When the skew coefficient of the logarithms of events is -0.5 or greater for samples from the log-Pearson Type III distribution, the SMEMAX procedure underestimates the magnitude of events with return periods of 50 yr …

Evaporite Diapirs In The La Popa Basin, Nuevo Leon, Mexico., Robert C. Laudon
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reconnaissance mapping and stratigraphic work in the La Popa basin of Neuvo Leon, northern Mexico, have revealed two large structural features with cores of gypsum and anhydrite at the surface. These features are interpreted to be the surface expression of evaporite diapirs. Geostatic loading is considered to be the most important mechanism for emplacement of the domes. -from Author

We Examined a 70-Year-Old Woman Who Became Aphasic after a Left Thalamic Infarction. Computed Tomographic Scan Showed Injury that Was Largely Limited to the Ventral Anterior and Rostral Ventral Lateral Thalamic Nuclei. Speech Was Characterized by Reduced Voice Volume, Impaired Auditory and Reading Comprehension, Perseverations, Intermittent Use of Jargon, Fluctuations in the Ability to Perform Confrontation Naming, Extraneous Intrusions, Verbal Paraphasia, Intact Repetition Skills, and Fluent Speech that Was Laconic But Grammatically Correct. We Propose that the Deficits after Left Thalamic Injury Can Be Grouped into the Following Four Large Clusters: Extrapyramidal Deficits (Decreased or Fading Voice Volume), Deficits in …
Dynamics Of Twinning In Natural Α-Quartz, Alexander Aning, Manfred Wuttig
Dynamics Of Twinning In Natural Α-Quartz, Alexander Aning, Manfred Wuttig
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Finite amplitude internal friction experiments in α-quartz are described and interpreted in terms of the theory of nonlinear anelasticity. The theory predicts a linear relationship between the driving force of the excitation and the period of the auto modulation at its onset. This relation is substantiated by experiments performed with a natural α-quartz reed vibrating in flexure at resonance frequencies between 65 and 170 Hz in the temperature range of 162° and 224°C. The data suggests that Dauphiné twinning in α-quartz causes the auto modulation governed by an activation energy of 92 kJ mole. This activation energy characterizes short distance …
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen
Masters Theses
"Many authors have encouraged the use of modular programming techniques in software development. In fact, there is almost total agreement within industrial and academic circles that modularity is a desirable feature of any software package. Unfortunately, the desirability of modular design is almost always voiced without support from experimental evidence.
This thesis consists of an experiment comparing the resource consumption of programmers based on the modularity practices employed during the design and programming phases of software development. The experiment tests the effectiveness of modularity in reducing psychological complexity of software.
The results of the research show that in some cases …

The Optimal Trajectory Modelling Of Robot Manipulators, Mary Claire Miller
Masters Theses
"Greater robot capability can be achieved through the use of robot manipulator control systems. Crucial to the success of these control systems is the optimal trajectory modelling of the path traced by the end- effector. To create this optimal path the utilization of B-Spline curve functions will be investigated, and compared to Cubic Spline curve functions"--Abstract, page ii.

The Role Of Boron In So32 And So43 Steels, Sunil S. Moghe
Masters Theses
"In this project study was conducted with the goal of understanding the role of boron involved in structure-toughness property relationship for SO32 and SO43 steels. For a standard heat-treatment of austenitizing (1 hr.) at 1700°F, water quenching and 1 hr. tempering at 1150°F SO32 steel (with 37 ppm B) lacked in toughness, while SO43 steel (with 2 ppm B) showed good toughness. In both steels all the boron was present in the form of "soluble boron" i.e., Fe23 (B,C)6 borocarbide. Experiments were carried out to study the effect of various heat treatment parameters on the precipitation behavior of …
A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson
A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson
Masters Theses
"Improving the efficiency of retrieving information concerns users of computer systems involved in many applications- One way of addressing this concern is to organize a sorted sequence into a binary search tree. Knuth's Algorithm K is a bottom-up organization algorithm that always constructs a binary tree which minimizes average search time. However, the cost of executing Algorithm K is prohibitive for a large tree. The aim of this work is to find a less costly method of organizing sorted sequences into nearly-optimal binary search trees.
We present a top-down organization method which yields better average search times than top-down methods …

Using Prisms To Excite Leaky Waves Or To Launch Surface Electromagnetic Waves, Gerald Kent Sirotiak
Doctoral Dissertations
"The ability of prisms to couple incident VEM radiation from a laser beam into leaky waves or to launch surface electromagnetic waves has been investigated. We have set out to discover wheth~r or not a single prism placed above an air-metal interface can be used to couple light from a laser beam into leaky electromagnetic waves. We have then attempted to relate the single prism technique to tb.e double prism technique for launching surface waves. We have also compared the coupling into a single interface to that into a waveguide.
We have found that prisms are unable to couple incident …
The Modeling And Control Of Freeze Dryers, Martin James Millman
The Modeling And Control Of Freeze Dryers, Martin James Millman
Doctoral Dissertations
"Two models of the freeze drying process were constructed and used to study various operational policies in order to determine the policy that would provide the shortest drying times.
The sublimation model which accounts only for the removal of frozen water, is found to predict shorter times for the free water removal phase than the sorption-sublimation model which properly accounts for the removal of frozen and bound water.
This study shows that the policy which produces the shortest free water removal phase, also produces the shortest overall drying time. This policy, predicted by both models, holds the chamber pressure at …
Applications Of Finite And Wave Envelope Element Approximations To Acoustic Radiation From Turbofan Engine Inlets In Flight, A. V. Parrett
Applications Of Finite And Wave Envelope Element Approximations To Acoustic Radiation From Turbofan Engine Inlets In Flight, A. V. Parrett
Doctoral Dissertations
"The problem of acoustic radiation from turbofan engine inlets in flow has not lent itself fully to analysis by numerical means because of the large domains and high frequencies involved. This project has extended the use of finite elements and wave envelope elements, elements which simulate decay and wavelike behaviour in their interpolation functions, from the no-flow case in which they have been proven, to cases incorporating mean flow. By employing an irrotational mean flow assumption, the acoustics problem has been posed in an axisymmetric formulation in terms of acoustic velocity potential, thus minimising computer solution storage requirements. The wave …

Angular Differential Cross Sections For The Excitation Of 1¹S Helium To The 2¹S And 2¹P States By 25- To 100-Kev Proton Impact, Thomas Jay Kvale
Doctoral Dissertations
"Angular differential cross sections for the proton impact excitation of ground state helium (11S) to the 21S and 21P states have been measured for the first time in the energy range 25- to 100-keV using the energy-loss technique. The present data have been numerically summed over the 21Sand 21P states to produce differential cross sections for excitation to the composite n=2 state and are in excellent agreement with previous experimental measurements of that process. Total cross sections have been obtained by numerically integrating the present data over scattering angle. and …
Fixed Bed Sorption With Recycle, John Thomas Casey
Fixed Bed Sorption With Recycle, John Thomas Casey
Doctoral Dissertations
"A mathematical model that describes single and multicomponent recycle-sorption systems is constructed. The model accounts for the generation of species by chemical reactions occurring in a single perfectly mixed tank, in the bulk fluid of the sorbent bed, and in the pores of the adsorbent particles.
Results are shown for single zeroth, first and second order reversible reactions as well as a network consisting of two first or second order reactions which may occur in series or parallel. For systems in which a single reaction occurs, both linear and non-linear equilibrium adsorption isotherms are considered. If multiple reactions occur, then …

Plasma Polymerization Of Tetramethyldisiloxane By A Magnetron Glow Discharge, Ashok K. Sharma, H. Yasuda
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Plasma polymerization of tetramethyldisiloxane by a magnetron glow discharge was studied. The glow discharge was created between parallel electrodes with a 10 kHz electric power source with a superimposed magnetic field using permanent bar magnets. Polymers were deposited onto moving substrates placed on the surface of a rotating disc located in between the electrodes. The deposition rates were determined with a quartz crystal thickness monitor placed on the plane of the rotating disc and just outside the edge of the disc. The current-voltage relationship observed for plasma polymerization of the monomer depends on the monomer feed rate and the conditioning …

Laterally Unsupported Purlins Subjected To Uplift, Roger A. Laboube
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION A research study, conducted at Cornell University, provided a theoretical method for evaluating the state of stress for both C- and Z- purlins subjected to wind uplift loading. According to the Cornell analytical method, a Z-purlin has more load carrying capability than a similar C-purlin. Although experimental verification was provided, questions were raised, within the Metal Building Industry, regarding the strength of the C-versus the Z-section. The purpose of the work discussed herein was to develop information regarding the behavior of C- and Z-sections having identical cross-section dimensions. A brief description of the test program, along with a comparison …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A projectile-dependent isotope effect was found for the elastic-scattering differential cross sections in the hydrogen-isotope collision systems. All four differential cross sections lie on a common curve if they are divided by the square of the reduced mass and plotted against momentum transfer. The experimental results are in satisfactory agreement with a simple Glauber-approximation calculation.

The effects of germanium, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, glue, and free acid concentration were studied on both commercial and synthetic electrolytes. The effects of a single factor and the combined effects of multiple factors were elucidated. The temperature, zinc concentration, and current density were varied for some of the tests. It was found that the acid content was the most critical factor when impurity levels were at normal plant solution concentrations. The ranges where the effect of the impurity became apparent were: greater than 20 ppb (parts per billion) for antimony; 40 ppb for germanium; 120 ppb for arsenic; and 7 …

Electron Capture Cross Sections For Tih⁴⁺, H. Sato, M. Kimura, A. E. Wetmore, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electron capture cross sections have been computed for Ti4++H to Ti3++H+ and Ti3++H+ to Ti4++H, where the reactants were in their ground states. The energy range investigated was 0.1 to 10 keV amu-1. The impact parameter perturbed-stationary-state method incorporating electron translation factors were used to calculate the cross sections. The molecular wavefunctions were generated using the pseudo-potential method. At 1 keV amu-1 ( nu rel=4.4*107 cm s-1), representative electron capture cross sections for the Ti4++H and Ti3++H+ reactions are 2*10-15 cm 2 and 1*10-17 cm2, respectively. An …
