Two- And Three-Body Electron-Ion Recombination In Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, B. K. Clark, Kaare J. Nygaard Dec 1983

Two- And Three-Body Electron-Ion Recombination In Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, B. K. Clark, Kaare J. Nygaard

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electron-ion recombination rate in carbon dioxide was measured as a function of electric field strength and gas pressure. The separate effects of two- and three-body recombination was observed, and the respective rate constants obtained. The results indicate that three-body recombination is dominant at low field strengths for gas pressures above 1 atm, whereas two-body recombination is dominant at high field strengths.

Charge Transfer And Ionisation Processes Involving Multiply Charged Ions In Collision With Atomic Hydrogen, D. J.W. Hardie, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Total cross sections are presented for the charge transfer reaction Xq++H(1s) to X(q-1)+H+ and ionization process Xq++H(1s) to Xq++H+-e-. Here Xq+ is a fully or partially stripped ion. The collision energy range lies between 25-200 keV amu-1. Cross sections are also given for charge transfer into particular ionic n states and n, l states for energies of 25 and 50 keV amu-1, where Xq+=H+, He 2+, C6+, O8+. The calculations were performed by the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method of Olson and …

Limiting Efficiencies For Multiple Energy-Gap Quantum Devices, Cheng-Hsiao Wu, Richard M. Williams Nov 1983

Limiting Efficiencies For Multiple Energy-Gap Quantum Devices, Cheng-Hsiao Wu, Richard M. Williams

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have used a thermodynamic model to calculate theoretical limiting efficiencies for simple and multiple gap solar cells. The limiting efficiency is 26% for a simple solar cell of hydrogenated amorphous silicon, operating at one Sun sensitivity. For a multiple gap cell made from hydrogenated amorphous silicon, together with a second cell, made from a material with lower band gap, it is 38%. The optimum band gap for the second material is 1.0 eV.

Structural Changes Induced By Addition Of A Hydrocarbon To Water/Amphiphile Mixtures, H. Sagitani, Stig Friberg Oct 1983

Structural Changes Induced By Addition Of A Hydrocarbon To Water/Amphiphile Mixtures, H. Sagitani, Stig Friberg

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The phase conditions in a system of water, hexadecane, sodium dodecyl sulphate, and di-ethylene glycol dodecyl ether showed the W/O microemulsions to be obtained first after destabilization of a liquid crystalline phase by addition of the hexadecane. The original lamellar liquid crystalline phase was moved towards higher surfactant/cosurfactant ratios and a new phase with inverse amphiphile cylinders in a hexagonal packing appeared. © 1983 Steinkopff.

Electrical Properties Of Plasma-Polymerized Thin Organic Films, Maciej Gazicki, H. Yasuda

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electrical properties of plasma-polymerized films are summarized and compared to those of conventional polymers. Particular attention is devoted to the dielectric relaxation, dielectric breakdown, electric conductivity and photoconductivity, and their control via control of the plasma parameters. © 1983 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

I. INTRODUCTION In February 1981, the "Guide for Preliminary Design of Sheet Steel Automotive Structural Components" was issued by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) for assisting automotive structural designers to achieve weight reduction through the efficient utilization of carbon and high strength steels. 1 These design recommendations were based primarily on the 1968 Edition of the AISI "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Hembers,,2 but contained the following major differences with regard to the AISI Specification, which was written 'for the design of buildings: 1,4 a. The design expressions presented in the Guide are based on an …

Transport Properties Of Ground State Nitrogen Atoms, James C. Rainwater, Louis Biolsi Jr., Kevin J. Biolsi, Paul M. Holland Aug 1983

Transport Properties Of Ground State Nitrogen Atoms, James C. Rainwater, Louis Biolsi Jr., Kevin J. Biolsi, Paul M. Holland

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transport properties of dilute monatomic gases depend on the two body atom-atom interaction potential. When two ground state (4S) nitrogen atoms interact, they can follow any of four potential energy curves corresponding to the N2 molecule; the X 1Σ+g, A3Σ+u, 5Σ+g, and 7Σ+u curves. Transport collision integrals for the 1Σ+g and 3Σ+u states have been calculated by representing the potentials for these states with the Hulburt-Hirschfelder potential. The5Σ+g state has a …

Control Of Oxygen And Carbon Related Crystal Defects In Silicon Processing, P. D. Ownby, P. E. Grayson Aug 1983

Control Of Oxygen And Carbon Related Crystal Defects In Silicon Processing, P. D. Ownby, P. E. Grayson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the production of silicon articles at an elevated temperature, a stream comprising a controlled mixture of an oxygen-containing first gas and a second gas is admitted to the processing chamber. The first gas is one which partially dissociates under the conditions in the chamber to form both oxygen and the second gas. The second gas is one which is not harmful to silicon at the conditions in the chamber. Substantially equilibrium conditions are established in the chamber so that the dissociation of the first gas to oxygen occurs reversibly. The partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) is sensed …

Study Of Prenucleation Ion Clusters: Correlation Between Ion Mobility Spectra And Size Distributions, Sung-Ho Suck Salk, Donald E. Hagen, James L. Kassner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Additional studies regarding our earlier electrothermodynamic theory are presented. Comparisons to recent expansion cloud chamber ion mobility measurements are made, indicating general agreement with observations. This theory predicts more stable and ordered structure for prenucleation ion-water cluster systems than accounted for by the classical Thomson's theory. In the limiting case of the dielectric constant ε = 1, our monopole electrostatic energy term contributed by the foreign ion center precisely converges to that of Thomson. Predicted ion cluster size distributions are found to correlate well with ion cluster size spectra obtained from the ion mobility measurements of hydrated ion clusters and …
