Measurement Of The Dusty Gas Model Parameters For Activated Carbon, Philip James Gloor Jan 1986

Measurement Of The Dusty Gas Model Parameters For Activated Carbon, Philip James Gloor

Masters Theses

"Included in the dusty gas equation are three constants, C0, C1 and C2, which depend only upon the porous medium. Values for C0 and C1 can be obtained for a particular porous material by performing pure gas flow experiments and a value for C2 can be obtained for the same material by performing Wicke-Kallenbach experiments. In this work, values for the dusty gas model parameters, for activated carbon, were obtained by performing the necessary experiments. The design and operation of the experimental equipment is presented along with the results obtained. The activated …

Conductivity And Photoconductivity Mechanisms Of Iron And Magnesium Doped Lithium Niobate, Joseph Francis Kirchhoff Jan 1986

Conductivity And Photoconductivity Mechanisms Of Iron And Magnesium Doped Lithium Niobate, Joseph Francis Kirchhoff

Masters Theses

Various compositions of lithium niobate crystals were observed to have an electrical conductivity given by 2.3 x 103 exp(-1.21/kT) Ω-1 m-1 between 200 and 3 15°C. This implies that in this temperature range, all such crystals exhibit comparable carrier concentration and mobility. A model based on intrinsic conductivity is presented which adequately agrees with experiment. In addition, a model is presented by which electronic photoconductivity can be predicted by evaluating the trapping cross-section associated with Fe3+ ions dependent upon their lattice sites"-- Abstract, p. ii

Expert System Technology Applied To The Sensor Allocation Problem For Multisensor Integration, Edwin Rowe Carney Jan 1986

Expert System Technology Applied To The Sensor Allocation Problem For Multisensor Integration, Edwin Rowe Carney

Masters Theses

"The use of multiple sensors for target acquisition provides both redundant and complementary coverage of the target observation space. To effectively utilize the sensor suite and to reduce the number of operator tasks, a high level of automation is required. An expert system is used to control the sensor suite. The expert system acts as an interface between the operator and the multisensory system. The sensors and their modes of operation are selected by the expert system. The mode selections are dependent upon the operator objective, the environment, and the physical and logical constraints of the system. The goal is …

Both experimental and theoretical work indicated that this process is useful for small scale water production where there is no available energy sources. It can be used also in conjunction with solar desalination processes. Cost analysis and a preliminary design are included"--Abstract, page ii.

Determining The Modified Derivative In Pressure Analysis, Scott Michael Frailey Jan 1986

Determining The Modified Derivative In Pressure Analysis, Scott Michael Frailey

Masters Theses

"The derivative type of curve technique of Bourdet for analyzing pressure tests requires calculating the derivative of the storage plot. Four numerical methods are used to evaluate the derivative: a five-point formula, Richardson's Extrapolation, a parabolic fit, and a central difference procedure. The parabolic fit and the central difference technique are good methods of determining the derivative. The effects of logarithmic s pacing of the data, using a central difference method, are studied. An investigation of the second derivative and the integral is conducted"-- Abstract, p. ii

An Investigation Of The Low Voltage Failure Mechanism In Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, Christopher John Brannon Jan 1986

An Investigation Of The Low Voltage Failure Mechanism In Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, Christopher John Brannon

Masters Theses

"Enhanced leakage current was induced into multilayer ceramic capacitors by the introduction of micro-cracks. These cracks extended from the surface through the electrode layers and were formed by means of thermal shock. The capacitors were then exposed to a low voltage bias and a humid atmosphere. Results indicated that a simple electrolytic solution mechanism may be responsible for the increased conduction, and that the proposed dendritic growth mechanisms may be more complex than necessary"--Abstract, p. ii

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux Jan 1986

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux

Masters Theses

"Specific geologic, hydrologic, and topographic characteristics influence the selection of technologies employed in the remediation of sites affected by dioxin-contaminated soil. These characteristics are significant in the selection of equipment and methods for excavation and materials processing.

The only currently sociologically acceptable method of treatment of dioxin-contaminated soils is incineration. As more is learned concerning the nature of dioxin sorption to soil particles and the mobility of dioxin in the environment, long-term storage in underground mines, and land burial appear to offer strong potential alternatives. Strong public sentiment against non-destructive remedial options would have to be overcome. There are also …

Geology Of The Escalante District, Iron County, Utah, James William Biehl Jan 1986

Geology Of The Escalante District, Iron County, Utah, James William Biehl

Masters Theses

"The Escalante Silver District, Iron County, Utah, occupies a group of low hills extending to the Escalante Desert from the Black Hills to the south. Tertiary volcanics serve as host rocks for silver bearing quartz veins. Five map units, with a total of 12 members are recognized. X-ray fluorescence and field mapping enabled differentiation of the units, while thin section analysis enabled characterization of the members. The map units formed in three episodes. The oldest is extrusive doming of distinctive older lava and breccia flows. The middle group is made up of tectontic breccias, sillar-like lava flows, and volcaniclastic sediments …

Swelling Pressure Studies Of Shales, S. L. Huang, N. B. Aughenbaugh, John D. Rockaway Jan 1986

Swelling Pressure Studies Of Shales, S. L. Huang, N. B. Aughenbaugh, John D. Rockaway

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A swelling model was developed to predict the swelling pressure which occurs within shale or shale material when it is immersed in water. This model is also capable of estimating the magnitude of shale swelling when subject to humidity changes. The model was developed on a basis of the moisture susceptibility of the shale and the initial humidity of the ventilated mine air. The Moisture Activity Index (IRH) was selected to describe the susceptibility of shale to moisture because of its close association with the other physical properties, its strong correlation with the swelling of the shale, and because it …

A Study Of Electron-Ion And Ion-Ion Recombination In Atmospheric Gas Discharges, Michael Corbin Cornell

Doctoral Dissertations

"In separate experiments, the electron-ion recombination rate, Yei, has been measured in CO2 and in mixtures of He, CO2, and N2; and the ion-ion recombination rate, Yii, has been measured in SF6 and in mixtures of SF6 and CH4. The rate constant was determined by analyzing the rising edge of the discharge current pulse. Measurements were made as functions of reduced electric field strength, gas pressure, and gas composition.

In the electron-ion recombination study, Yei in CO2 and in mixtures containing N2 and CO2 …

A Data Structure For The Use Of Patterns In The Perceptual Ordering Of The Game Of Chess, Russ L. Hanna Jan 1986

A Data Structure For The Use Of Patterns In The Perceptual Ordering Of The Game Of Chess, Russ L. Hanna

Masters Theses

"It is well known that the way one perceives a problem can influence the difficulty of solving the problem in a profound way. In the case of computer chess playing programs, one finds that most programs perceive the game in much the same way. They are all based on Shannon's original proposal for chess playing programs. His approach was to generate all of the possible combinations of moves up to a certain number of plays and then a subset of all combinations to a deeper level thereafter. Each of these moves would then be evaluated as to its relative worth. …

A New Basin Characteristic For Use In Estimating Impervious Area And Flood Discharges In Urban Missouri Basins, Rodney E. Southard Jan 1986

A New Basin Characteristic For Use In Estimating Impervious Area And Flood Discharges In Urban Missouri Basins, Rodney E. Southard

Masters Theses

"A previous regression analysis of flood peaks on urban basins in St. Louis County, Missouri, indicated that the percentage of impervious area and drainage area were the only basin characteristics of statistical significance in estimating the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year peak-flow discharges at ungaged urban basins. In this statewide regression analysis of urban basins, a new basin characteristic called the percentage of developed area was computed and used in a simple regression analysis. The regression analysis included percentage of developed area as the independent variable and impervious area as the dependent variable, resulting in a simplified procedure …

Resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) involving simultaneous electron capture and projectile K-shell excitation has been measured for calcium ions in charge states ranging from neon like to hydrogen like incident on molecular hydrogen over an energy range 100-370 MeV. The results establish a projectile charge-state dependence for RTE and provide a detailed test of theoretical calculations. The effect of the target-electron momentum distribution on the RTE process is demonstrated by comparing with previous results for calcium ions incident on helium. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Previous experimental and theoretical work has found electron capture to be a monotonically decreasing function of energy in fast ion-atom collisions. We report here the experimental observation of nonmonotonic behavior of the electron-capture cross sections in fast collisions of calcium ions, in charge states 16+ to 19+, with molecular hydrogen, in the energy range 97368 MeV. The structure observed in the measured cross sections is attributed to the contribution of resonant transfer and excitation to electron capture. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Tuning Characteristics And New Laser Lines In An Nd:Yap Cw Laser, Laird D. Schearer, Michele Leduc

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have investigated the CW laser properties of Nd-doped yttrium-aluminum-perovskite (YAP) in a Kr are-lamp, pumped cavity, Seven laser transitions within the 4F3/2-4I11/2 multiplet have been observed. A simple Lyot filter is used to select the particular transitions. The tuning characteristics of the transitions at 1.0745 and 1.0845 μm were also obtained with the addition of a thin, uncoated etalon within the cavity. Tuning widths of 32 and 23 Å, respectively, were obtained. Copyright © 1986 IEEE

Plasma‐Substrate Interaction: Effect Of Volatile Oligomers In Silicone Rubber On Plasma Polymerization Of Fluorine‐Containing Monomers, Y. ‐S Yeh, H. Yasuda Jan 1986

Plasma‐Substrate Interaction: Effect Of Volatile Oligomers In Silicone Rubber On Plasma Polymerization Of Fluorine‐Containing Monomers, Y. ‐S Yeh, H. Yasuda

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The cause of the conspicuous Si content consistently observed on plasma polymers deposited on silicone rubber was investigated in this study. Plasma polymers of tetrafluoroethylene and of hexafluoroethane were deposited on the inside surface of Silastic tubings with and without oligomers by using a semicontinuous plasma polymerization reactor. This tube coating reactor is unique in the sense that the only surface which interacts with the plasma is the substrate surface (i.e., inside wall of tubing) and that plasma polymerization occurs in a very small volume of 3.3‐mm‐I.D. and 2‐cm‐long section of tubing at any given time. These two factors render …

A Non-Aqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal With An Ionic Surfactant-Long Chain Alcohol Combination, Stig Friberg, Paul Liang, Yuh Chirn Liang, Bettye Greene, Ron Van Gilder

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A non-aqueous lamellar liquid crystal of sodium dodecyl sulfate, decanol and glycerol was prepared and compared with its aqueous counterpart. The results show that the stability of the liquid crystal with glycerol is critically dependent on the surfactant/alcohol ratio, whereas the liquid cry. The interlayer spacing was smaller for the glycerol system than for the water system at finite amount of solvent, but the value extrapolated to zero so. © 1986.

Foams From A Three-Phase Emulsion, Hironobu Kunieda, Stig Friberg Jan 1986

Foams From A Three-Phase Emulsion, Hironobu Kunieda, Stig Friberg

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Foam stability was related to phase behavior in a foamed three-phase region consisting of an aqueous solution (L1), an alcohol solution (L2) and lamellar liquid-crystalline (LC) phases in the C8H17SO3Na/C8H17OH/H2O system. The state of the system before foaming was LC/L2 + LC/L1 or L1 + L2/LC type emulsions up to a high octanol/water ratio of 77/23. In L2 + LC/L1 emulsion, the LC droplets exist separately from the alcohol droplets in an aqueous continuous medium. The viscosity of the system was enhanced with an increase in the content of dispersed phases, i.e. alcohol and/or liquid crystal phases contributing to the …

Surfactant Association Structures And The Stability Of Emulsions And Foams, Stig Friberg, Concepcion Solans

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditional surfactants in combination with water and a more hydrophobic amphiphile, such as an alcohol or a carboxylic acid, present a rich variety of colloidal association structures, both micelles and lyotropic liquid crystals. The presence of such association structures has a pronounced influence on the stability of macro dispersed systems such as emulsions and foams. A few examples of such an influence are discussed. © 1986, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
