A New Automated Pulse Testing Analysis Method Applying Inflection Point Theory, Jose Maria Donoso
A New Automated Pulse Testing Analysis Method Applying Inflection Point Theory, Jose Maria Donoso
Masters Theses
"This paper describes a new technique for pulse test analysis that combines the simplicity of the tangent method with the result repeatability of the iterative methods. Inflection points are used instead of time lag with the added advantage that they are calculated by a simple algorithm and are not subject to graphical misinterpretation. Charts are made for the calculation of transmissibility and storage for unequal pulse and shut-in periods from 0.1 to 0.9 relating inflection time to pulse response amplitude and dimensionless inflection time.
The graphs presented for this technique have the same dimensionless cycle period ranges (from 0.44 to …

A Computerized Audio-Visual Speech Model, Joaquin Alberto Vila Ruiz
Masters Theses
"This thesis describes an expert system able to animate (graphically) and reproduce (acoustically) a text in any language which uses the Latin alphabet. A rule editor has been developed to create and modify the set of letter-to-sound rules of the target language. A parser has been implemented to apply the set of rules and translate text-to-speech. Each phoneme has a unique sound and thus requires its particular positioning of the vocal organs which are displayed in two different projections: a front view and a profile cross view of a human face in synchronization with the output sounds of the speech …

Experimental Investigation Of The Effect Of Geological Discontinuity Conditions Of Rock Splitting By Blasting, Shijie Qu
Masters Theses
"A series of modal scale, two borehole splitting test blasts was geometrically designed both with concrete and with Plexiglas. The discontinuities were all symetrically located midway between split holes and were oriented perpendicular to the desired split plane. Sand and clay filled discontinuities of 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 inch width, and closed discontinuities were used. Both discontinuity frequency and width generally reduced the maximum successful split-hole spacing. The regularity and integrity of the split profile became poorer as the discontinuities were closer to the boreholes and the discontinuity width became greater, due to the cratering effect which occurred from the …
An Experimental Investigation Of Electrochemical Memory Cells, Timothy Jules Martin
An Experimental Investigation Of Electrochemical Memory Cells, Timothy Jules Martin
Masters Theses
"An experimental electrochemical memory cell was constructed using a Pt cathode, Cu anode, and CuS04 electrolyte. The mechanism of operation of this cell consisted of plating and stripping of Cu from the Pt cathode. A cathode surface area of l.33 X 10-4 cm2 required approximately 700 μs to store 5 monolayers of Cu, writing time. The access time would be the time required to measure the Pt/Cu potential and was undetermined. Fifteen seconds were projected to oxidize the plated copper, producing loss of information, resulting in poor volatility characteristics of the cell. However, this electrochemical memory cell …
Reaction During Sintering Of Barium Titanate With Lithium Fluoride, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson
Reaction During Sintering Of Barium Titanate With Lithium Fluoride, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The reactions occurring during sintering of stoichiometric BaTiO3 with small additions of LiF were studied at temperatures between 700° and 900°C. BaTiO3 reacts with LiF to form a cubic solid solution and Li2TiO3 During sintering, the cubic solid solution coexists with Li2Ti03 and forms a liquid phase at 740°± 5°C. The occurrence of a liquid phase at this temperature results in an enhancement of the sintering process and leads to the development of a highly dense microstructure. Electron capture and loss cross sections have been measured for highly charged (q=13+) sulfur ions with energies 2.5-200 MeV colliding with helium. Electron capture varies by nearly six orders of magnitude over the energy range investigated, while electron loss varies by only about a factor of 2. The capture cross sections are in reasonable agreement with classical and empirical scaling rules, while the loss cross sections agree well with the plane-wave Born approximation. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

V/2 Electrons In H++H Ionizing Collisions, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations are used to determine the velocity and angular dependence of the electron ionized in the H++HH++H++e- collision. The energy range studied is 40200 keV. At energies E60 keV, ionized electrons with velocities that are near one-half (v/2) the relative velocity v of the collision dominate the electron spectra. At higher energies the maximum position of the ionized electrons shifts and is found centered about the target nucleus. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

We have investigated the CW laser properties of the lanthamide hexa-aluminate La0.9Nd0.1MgAl11O19 at room temperature. When a I cm long crystal is pumped by an Ar+ laser (514 nm) or a Kr+ laser (752 nm), CW emission is obtained with slope efficiencies of 10 and 26 percent, respectively. A four-plate Lyot filter in the cavity forces the LNA crystal to oscillate in either of the two major bands centered at 10 820 A (tuning range 80 A) and 10 545 A (tuning range 35 Å). General Features Of The Aerosol Observed In The Guinean Savannah At The Level Of The Itcz Influence Of The Drought, F. Désalmand, R. Serpolay, Josef Podzimek
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The stagnation and mixing of various air masses at the level of the ITCZ in the dry season, together with the absence of rain, favor, in the Guinean savannah, the formation of a well-aged and homogeneous aerosol made up of very active mixed nuclei. When the drought increases, the aerosol always remains an aged one, i.e. absence of particles with radius r < 0.02 μm, no nucleation mode. However, different properties show a younger and less homogeneous aerosol, i.e. very high counts in all the categories of particles (the concentration of nuclei activated at the supersaturation S {reversed tilde equals} 0.32% reaches 9960 cm-3), poor correlations between the concentrations of various groups of particles and no fog. When the fires are frequent and spread all over the savannah, a permanent addition of new particles to the local background aerosol (due to a complicated circulation) prevents the ageing of the aerosol that is observed during the usual drought with a moderate extension of bushfires. © 1986.

Multiple-vacancy production in Ar atoms by 1.4-MeV/u highly stripped ion impact is studied. From a recoil-ionprojectile-ion coincidence experiment charge-state distributions of Ar ions were obtained distinguishing between pure ionization and capture of up to three electrons by N6+,7+, Fe12+,15+,20+,21+, Kr18+, Gd37+, and U30+,36+,41+,44+,4 8+ ions. With increasing projectile charge state the relative abundances of multiply charged recoil ions increase. However, for high-charge-state projectiles, the relative fractions of recoil ions for concomitant electron capture and ionization are found to be independent of projectile charge or species. To interpret the data, classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations have been made assuming the applicability …

Ionization Of H And He+ By Electrons And Positrons Colliding At Near-Threshold Energies, A. E. Wetmore, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ionization cross sections for the four combinations of electrons and positrons on H and He+ have been calculated at energies near the threshold for ionization using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. In addition, charge-exchange (positronium formation) cross sections have been calculated for the positron-impact collisions. The ionization cross sections compare well with the predictions of the Wannier and Klar models and experimental observations. Our results indicate that the Wannier-type threshold behavior may extend to higher energies than was previously thought. In addition, we have calculated two of the collision parameters, the angle and the relative separation between the escaping …

Electrodeposition And Analysis Of Tin Selenide Films, R. D. Engelken, Jack L. Boone, A. Shahnazary
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sn1±xSe films have been electrodeposited from aqueous solutions containing SnCl2 and ionically dissolved SeO2 or H2SeO3 and DMF solutions containing SnCl2 and molecularly dissolved selenium powder. The as-deposited films ranged from amorphous to polycrystalline and exhibited indirect or nondirect bandgaps from 0.85 to 0.95 eV. There was little difference between the appearance or material data of the films grown by the two techniques. Direct reaction between Sn++ and H2SeO3 or HSeO3_ in the aqueous solutions yielded a Se/SnxSe suspension/precipitate. Although this does not seem to have any serious effect on the deposition process, it does produce a decrease in the …

Current atmospheric observations tend to support the view that continental tropospheric aerosols (particularly urban aerosols) show multimodal mass distributions in the size range of 0.01-100 μm. The origin of these aerosols is both natural and anthropogenic. Recently, trimodal sub-μm size distributions from combustion measurements at 0.008, 0.035 and 0.15 μm were also observed. Our interest in the present study is the secondary process of growth of sub-μm size aerosols by the coagulation process alone. Using the 'J-space' (integer-space) distribution method of Salk (Suck) and Brock (1979, J. Aerosol Sci. 10, 58-590), we report an accurate numerical simulation study of the …

Tspc/Dc Measurements On Barium Titanate, Harlan U. Anderson, Wayne Huebner
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Thermally-stimlated polarization / depolarization current (TSPC / DC) measurements were made on high-purity doped and undopod BaTiO3 as a function of applied field, heating rate, dopant level, and Ba:Ti ratio. The form of the TSPC/DC curves is dependent upon both the resistive and ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3. For TSPC spectra, current peaks are exhibited due to the change in in magnitude and direction of the spontaneous polarization with changing crystal structure. In particular, whether the phase transition is first or seoond order influsnaes the existence and magnitude of the current peaks. TSDC measurements are essentially dynamic pyroelectric measurements and as …

A Two-Dimensional, Three-Phase Reservoir Simulator Using The Impes Formulation, Ralph Ross Roesler
A Two-Dimensional, Three-Phase Reservoir Simulator Using The Impes Formulation, Ralph Ross Roesler
Masters Theses
"A numerical model for two dimensional, three-phase fluid flow has been developed using the IMPES formulation. Reservoir heterogeneities have been included, such as areal variations in porosity, permeability, thickness, and depth from a reference point. The model can also solve the problem of variable bubble points.
To check the accuracy of the model, a comparison was made with the Buckley-Leverett technique of predicting waterflood performance. The reservoir in the comparison is a 40 acre five spot with an initial gas saturation of 15 percent. The study shows that the two models are in good agreement, except for differences due to …
A Study Of Problem Lead-Zinc Ores Of Southeast Missouri In Terms Of Mineralogy And Galena Oxidation, Michael G. Schroer
A Study Of Problem Lead-Zinc Ores Of Southeast Missouri In Terms Of Mineralogy And Galena Oxidation, Michael G. Schroer
Masters Theses
"Recovery problems encountered at some of the St. Joe Lead Company's milling facilities prompted the study of 6 different ores. High and low grade ores had characteristics that varied from poor lead - zinc selectivity to excessive lead losses to the flotation tailings. Three ores from both the Fletcher and Viburnum mills were studied through flotation tests, mill water analysis, and ore analysis using an ore microscope.
The major cause for poor recovery was found to be due to ore oxidation. Not only was lead, in the form of oxides, reporting to the tails, but high levels of copper ions …
Dimensional Change Correlations For 20% Cold Worked Aisi 316 Stainless Steel For Fusion Applications, Robert Wayne Clark
Dimensional Change Correlations For 20% Cold Worked Aisi 316 Stainless Steel For Fusion Applications, Robert Wayne Clark
Masters Theses
"Dimensional instability of structural components in a fusion reactor Is expected to occur during Its operation. This expectation is based upon experience with fast reactors In the United States, France and United Kingdom. Correlations for void swelling and Irradiation creep are developed in this thesis for 20% cold worked AISI 316 Stainless Steel for fusion applications.
The sensitivities of swelling to variations in composition, fabrication and the Irradiation environment I le al roost exclusively in the duration of the transient regime of swelling. Irradiation creep rates at high exposures are also expected to exhibit a similar parametric insensitivity, largely because …

Masters Theses
“A fluidized bed gas-solid reactor was designed and tested in which most of the fluidization energy is provided by a helical stirrer, with gas being used primarily as a reactant. The bulk gas in which the particles are suspended is practically constant in composition except for the area immediately adjacent to the gas inlet. The reactor is capable of withstanding temperatures up to at least 800°C and can be used with a wide range of flow rates. It is intended primarily as a laboratory tool, with the potential to be scaled up to multikilogram size.
The reactoor is a useful …

"Lanthanum Chromite, when used as the fuel cell interconnector material is exposed to extremely different oxygen activities on its two surfaces. In addition, it must also form coherent boundaries with the fuel electrode (anode) and air electrode (cathode) layers. In order to accomplish these functions the acceptor doped LaCrO3 must not only be chemically stable over large oxygen activity ranges, but also have good thermal expansion coefficient of match with both the anode and cathode. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate these requirements for Mg and Sr doped LaCrO3. The study was divided into …

"Several bearing capacity theories have been reviewed in this analysis. However, only Meyerhof's theory is considered in great detail. Bearing capacity factors Nc, Nq, and Nγ have been computed based on Meyerhof's plasticity theory and the minimum passive earth pressures have been found by iterative calculations at all grid locations.
A computer program was developed to run Meyerhof's analysis on the IBM-Personal Computer. His previous charts were not totally satisfactory, because certain geometry was ignored. The computer program considers surface and shallow foundations with various values of degree of mobilization and ratios of depth-to-width of …
