Variational Treatment Of A Harmonic Oscillator Coupled To A Dissipative Heat Bath, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey Feb 1987

Variational Treatment Of A Harmonic Oscillator Coupled To A Dissipative Heat Bath, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the problem of a single quantum oscillator coupled linearly to a heat bath of independent harmonic modes. An exact solution is presented for the system-oscillator observables of interest. The exact results are then used to evaluate the utility of a variational approach to the problem that has proven useful recently in elucidating the dynamics of dissipatively coupled systems. We find that the variational approach does provide a good description for most, but not all, observables of interest. Both the exact and the variational treatment demonstrate the important role played by the low-frequency bath modes in determining qualitative features …

The Game of Sprouts Has Intrigued Mathematicians for Nearly Twenty Years. This Paper Describes a Representation Scheme Which Simplifies Much of the Geometry of the Game. using This Representation, We Develop a Prolog Program Which Will Play Sprouts. It is Hoped that the Program Will Prove to Be a Useful Research Tool in Finding the Key to a Winning Strategy for Sprouts and that the Representation Will Serve as a Useful Model for Studying Planar Graphs.

A Dynamic Caching Algorithm Based On C. C. Chang's Ordered Minimal Perfect Hashing Scheme, Thomas J. Sager

Computer Science Technical Reports

An algorithm for storage and retrieval in a small dynamic cache is presented. This algorithm is based on C.C. Chang’s ordered minimal perfect hashing scheme. Our algorithm has the property that it divides the set of objects that could occupy the cache into an arbitrary number of equivalence classes. The only restriction on which objects can occupy the cache are that no two objects in the same equivalence class can be in the cache at the same time. Retrieval from the cache is performed in constant time. Update of the cache is performed in logarithmic time.

Three Partition Refinement Algorithms, Robert Paige L., Robert Endre Tarjan Jan 1987

Three Partition Refinement Algorithms, Robert Paige L., Robert Endre Tarjan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present improved partition refinement algorithms for three problems: lexicographic sorting, relational coarsest partition, and double lexical ordering. Our double lexical ordering algorithm uses a new, efficient method for unmerging two sorted sets.

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Motion Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, J. Baumann Jan 1987

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Motion Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, J. Baumann

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the relationship between the three-position motion generation problem and the solution space for planar four-bar mechanisms. After one half of the basic four bar had been selected, two infinities of solutions still remained. These solutions are mapped in a plane to determine where the particular types of mechanisms occur. A contour is then generated in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which share a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space and in the Cartesian plane in which the motion generation is defined. Significant …

Characteristic Surfaces For Three Position Function Generation With Planar Four Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, P. L. Tso

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the relationship between the three-position function generation problem and the solution space for planar four bar mechanisms. The two infinities of solutions possible are mapped in a plane to determine the locations where particular types of mechanisms occur. It is possible to generate a contour in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which possess a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space to ascertain the overall characteristics of potential solutions to the design problem. A numerical example is used for illustrative purposes, but the …

The UMR Cloud Simulation Facility is described. The facility is designed to provide a controlled environment simulating the conditions of natural atmospheric processes. It consists of two cooled-wall expansion cloud chambers and peripheral instrumentation for generation and characterization of aerosols used for cloud formation studies. Results of initial studies of the growth of warm cloud droplets and inferred measurements of the condensation coefficient are described.

Microstructural Inhomogeneity In Sintered Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3‐Pbtio3 Based Dielectrics, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1987

Microstructural Inhomogeneity In Sintered Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3‐Pbtio3 Based Dielectrics, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sintering behavior and microstructural development of dielectric ceramics based on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 solid solutions are greatly affected by the formation of a liquid phase at ∼ 1290°C. Prolonged sintering at and above this temperature gives rise to an excessive PbO loss and the resultant variation in composition leads to an inhomogeneous microstructure. The inhomogeneity is characterized by the formation of a dense, localized region containing a PbO‐rich liquid near the surface with a porous interior region in the bulk of the sample. A Gravity And Magnetic Study Of The Crooked Creek Cryptoexplosion Structure, Crawford County, Missouri, Charles Edward Woodbury Jan 1987

A Gravity And Magnetic Study Of The Crooked Creek Cryptoexplosion Structure, Crawford County, Missouri, Charles Edward Woodbury

Masters Theses

"The pre-Pennsylvanian structure at Crooked Creek consists of a complex, vertically faulted ring of Cambrian and Ordovician sediments with a central uplifted core. The center of the structure is strongly deformed and contains shatter cones, brecciation, and other signs of extreme shock.

A magnetic low over the center of the structure suggests that igneous material was not involved in the formation of the structure, and this is corroborated by core analysis. Gravity data indicates several small gravity lows, possibly associated with areas of brecciation, circling the flanks of the structure. As in the magnetic data, there is no indication that …

Training For The Airland Battle With Modeling And Simulation On The Microcomputer, David Dean Holmes Jan 1987

Training For The Airland Battle With Modeling And Simulation On The Microcomputer, David Dean Holmes

Masters Theses

"This paper describes a methodology for modifying a combat training simulation model to include a comprehensive data structure and computer software, to allow the model to be implemented on a microcomputer. It begins by developing a topology for combat simulation models and proceeds to define a data structure suitable for describing military units and facilitating the varied aspects of the simulation. An eclectic approach to the development of the model and the implementing software is followed throughout. Appropriate aspects of a number of models are incorporated into a single model suitable for training military commanders and their staffs. PASCAL, a …
